L'avventurosa storia di Jacky Barbier e del suo club A l'Ouest de la Grosne a Bresse-sur-Grosne (Francia) raccontata a puntate da Aymeric Leroy al sito web Legends In Their Own Lunchtime, riprendendo e ampliando un suo contributo incluso nella pubblicazione uscita nel 2007 a cura del Centre régional du jazz en Bourgogne (Editions de l'Armançon). Ancien du 'Café de la Gare' parisien qu'il a créé avec Romain Bouteille et où il a côtoyé Miou-Miou, Patrick Dewaere, Coluche et Gérard Depardieu, Jacky Barbier est le fondateur du club 'A l'Ouest de la Grosne' dans le village clunisois de Bresse-sur-Grosne. Pendant 28 ans, ce café-concert a accueilli un grand nombre d'artistes et de musiciens de tous bords, notamment de jazz, français et étrangers. Le lieu fut à la fois une scène tremplin pour les groupes régionaux, une étape sur leur tournée pour les artistes confirmés, et un espace de rencontre et de création pour tous. Outre des concerts réguliers, il proposait un studio d'enregistrement et des stages de formation aux techniques de masterisation.

L'importanza e il ruolo propulsivo per la scena jazz e progressive francese e internazionale di Jacky Barbier e del luogo di concerti e sessioni musicali da lui gestito con grande passione per quasi trent'anni a Bresse-sur-Grosne, in Borgogna (Francia), l'ormai mitico À l'ouest de la Grosne, sono già stati oggetto di un'iniziativa editoriale divulgativa qualche anno fa (Editions de l'Armançon, 2007). Tornano attuali oggi, con l'acquisizione del suo prezioso patrimonio di registrazioni audio e video da parte degli archivi storico-culturali del dipartimento di Saona e Loira, e la graduale apertura alle consultazioni anche tramite il web. Tra i primi documenti pubblicati ci sono concerti di Alain Eckert, François "Faton" Cahen, Jean-Luc Cappozzo, Valentin Clastrier e Gong (epoca Shapeshifter, con Pip Pyle in formazione).

Constitué de 900 bandes magnétiques, cassettes DAT et CD, le "fonds Barbier" est un témoignage unique et inédit de presque 30 ans d'activité de la scène jazz en Bourgogne. Il est le fruit du travail de l'association À l'Ouest de la Grosne, et particulièrement de celui qui l'a créée et dirigée avec passion, Jacky Barbier, de 1976 jusqu'à sa mort en 2002. Pendant cette période, un nombre impressionnant d'artistes de tous horizons musicaux (régionaux pour beaucoup, mais aussi étrangers, notamment de Grande-Bretagne et des États-Unis, de passage en France) se sont produits sur les planches de sa salle de concert à Bresse-sur-Grosne et sont passés par son studio d'enregistrement.

Canterbury Legends (In Their Own Lunchtime) è il nome assunto dalla formazione comprendente Hugh Hopper, Didier Malherbe, Phil Miller, Patrice Meyer, Alex Maguire e Manuel Denizet per il concerto a Cluny (Francia) lo scorso 5 maggio nell'ambito di una serata in ricordo di Jacky Barbier a cinque anni dalla scomparsa e in concomitanza con l'uscita di un libro ("A l'ouest de la Grosne: Un repère pour la musique, un repaire pour l'amitié") a lui dedicato.

Canterbury Legends (In Their Own Lunchtime): this is how the all-star sextet of Hugh Hopper, Phil Miller, Didier Malherbe, Patrice Meyer, Alex Maguire and Manuel Denizet were billed for their unique appearance at the Jacky Barbier tribute concert in Cluny (Burgundy, France) last week-end. This very fine concert also featured, among others, the Mimi Lorenzini/Ann Ballester duo (ex-Edition Speciale) and Zao. The 50-minute set was largely in the vein of Short Wave, consisting of "Wanglo-Saxon", "2PM" (played for the first time with both PMs!) and "Nan True's Hole", plus "Seven For Lee" as a tribute to Elton (the great "Rogue Element" album, which opened with this track, was recorded at Jacky's club), and a doudouk/piano duo piece by Didier.

Scrive Aymeric Leroy su What's Rattlin'? a proposito di un concerto fuori-programma tenuto ieri nel locale parigino Le Triton:

"Yesterday night, Jean Pierre Vivante, manager of the Triton, celebrated his 50th birthday with a special evening of music featuring most of the artists that have appeared regularly at the club since its opening in 2001. This included French artists such as Elise Caron, Mederic Collignon's quartet (playing the title track from "Bitches Brew"!), most of Magma (actually One Shot which includes three players from Magma, plus Ad Vitam which includes one), but also representatives of the Canterbury/Paris axis. There was a Soft Bounds reunion with Sophia Domancich, Hugh Hopper and Simon Goubert plus Pierre-Olivier Govin (Polysoft) replacing Elton, playing Simon's signature tune "Le Retour D'Emmanuel Philibert"; John Greaves with Sophia Domancich, Vincent Courtois and singer Jeanne Added, who performed "The World Tonight" and "La Lune Blanche" from John's upcoming Verlaine album; and a quartet of Didier Malherbe, Patrice Meyer, Loy Ehrlich and Francois Merville (Polysoft drummer) playing a couple of Hendrix covers. There was also a big jam at the end which was quite good at times. I must say that the climax of the evening for me, at the risk of offending Canterbury purists, was One Shot's amazing rendition of the title track from their latest album "Ewaz Vader" - jazz-rock at its best. It was nice to see all these people gathered together on the same stage.

On May 5th something a little similar will take place in Cluny, France, as part of an evening in memory of the great Jacky Barbier and his club A L'Ouest De La Grosne. I was asked to coordinate a "Canterbury" set, and came up with a Short Wave-ish line-up of Didier Malherbe, Hugh Hopper, Phil Miller, Patrice Meyer, Alex Maguire and Manu Denizet (the latter being John Greaves' longtime drummer in his early 00s trio, and also played in Hugh Hopper's Franglo quartet a couple of times). Hopefully their 45-minute set will include some old favourites - I specifically requested that they play Hugh's "2PM" which was written for both Phil Miller and Patrice Meyer (thus its title) but never played by both guitarists together."

Didier Malherbe fece brevemente parte del gruppo di Pip Pyle Equip'Out assieme a Elton Dean, Sophia Domancich e Hugh Hopper in occasione del primo giro di concerti in Francia, una dozzina di date nell'autunno 1984 parzialmente documentate su audiocassetta direttamente dal batterista e titolare. Il concerto del 10 dicembre tenuto a Bresse-sur-Grosne presso l'amatissimo club A l'Ouest de la Grosne di Jacky Barbier è tra le più recenti pubblicazioni curate da Aymeric Leroy per il Phil Miller-The Legacy.

Scrive Leroy in una nota introduttiva: "Equip’Out was the band Pip Pyle formed as he was moving base from England to France, beginning a musical as well as private partnership with the French pianist. His initial idea was to involve both Elton Dean and John Greaves from his previous group Soft Heap, but Greaves declined, which led to Pip drawing Hugh Hopper out of retirement. The band’s first tour also had Pip’s old Gong bandmate Didier Malherbe as second sax (and flute) player, and Didier actually does most of the onstage announcements on the first few gigs, perhaps because Pip didn’t feel confident with his French at this point. Didier left the band after that, although he returned as special guest for the first studio album."
