Each year, the Today programme hands over the editorial reins to six public figures, giving them a chance to decide what goes on the programme between Christmas and New Year.
Editing the programme on New Year's Day is the musician Robert Wyatt. His programme will look at the music being made by amateur choirs around the country and at the people willing to stick up for politicians after the scandal surrounding MPs' expenses.

Cutler ricorda: "A great live recording of the sadly short-lived version of the band that existed between the arrival of Eric Drew Feldman and my departure. By far the best recording of the Scott, Cutler, Maimone rhythm section, I think, and the whole band is on intense concert form: David racked up to 11, Eric working equally on foundations and fine details as to the out-there manner born and Jim Jones somewhere in the stratosphere. Coming back to it, this was a pretty great band. The songs are economical, tightly arranged and take no prisoners. And there's that live energy - the closest we can get to being when and where we weren't. Studio recordings can't do this."

Improvised Music from Japan 2009 takes a look at improvised/experimental music festivals and concert series in Japan. Covered in the book are 33 of the many festival/series events taking place around the country. The articles (some written by the organizers themselves, others based on interviews of the organizers conducted in person or by e-mail) reveal the ideas, aims and feelings of the people on the small improvised/experimental music scene who work tirelessly to hold these events on an ongoing basis. There's also an appendix with photos taken at the 2008 Ftarri Festival Tokyo. In addition to the 128-page book (all bilingual English-Japanese), there are 3 CDs with a total of 31 tracks by 31 artists/groups, for an amazing range of music.

Matthew Parris presents the biographical series in which his guests choose someone who has inspired their lives.
Musician and performer Neil Innes discusses the life of his Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band colleague and friend Vivian Stanshall. Neil recalls the moment he met Vivian Stanshall in London: he was wearing Billy Bunter trousers, a Victorian frock coat and horrible purple pince-nez glasses and carrying a euphonium. So began a friendship and a musical partnership that exploded into life with The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, culminating in tours and TV series. Vivian's second wife, Ki Longfellow, joins the discussion to help explore the man behind the colourful public persona.

The Stone: “The emphasis of my programming at The Stone during the last weeks of 2009 is on musicians who subtly, insistingly, and creatively expand the potential of song. By investing songs with both heart and brain, and by tapping into the alchemy of the understandable and the mysterious, these daring songwriters prove that the ancient combination of words and music can still yield surprises, open new vistas, and permit and promote profound communication.”

"The 4 released albums will be thoroughly re-mastered and there will be at least one CD of unreleased studio and live material and at least one DVD of live and studio footage, including a mini documentary made during the recording of A Face We All Know: 5 or 6 CDs and a DVD - in the usual sturdy box with a fat booklet of documents, interviews, information, photographs, pictures, itineraries and miscellaneous memorabilia. Subscribers will also get an extra, otherwise unavailable, CD in a limited and numbered edition.
In hard times for physical media, this inevitably will be an expensive undertaking, so we are asking anyone who wants to subscribe please to do so as soon as possible (no money will be taken until 2 months before release) - if it is released; and that will depend the number who are ready to assist the production with their subscriptions. In recognition all subscribers' names will be credited in all boxes sold.

Hurrah Reel Recordings!!!

That the recordings made of Britain’s Soft Machine remain as rewarding and inspirational today as the moment of their making, qualifies the groups international stature as the most expressively intelligent of rock music’s progressive epoch. Born of the Beat Generation & Beat music, sacrificed on the clichéd tracks of jazz-fusion, the music in between by the classic quartet of keyboardist Mike Ratledge, saxophonist Elton Dean (1945-2005), bass guitarist Hugh Hopper (1945-2009) and drummer Robert Wyatt is mercurial genius manifest. Still and all, a creative apex where the music attained a ‘whole greater than its sum parts’, occurred on the evening of February 28th, 1971 at the Henie Onstad Art Centre in Oslo, Norway. Here, the group was afforded a rare crucible for their collective creativity by virtue of an intimate concert space, accurate amplification, and an appreciative audience. Also in Henie Onstad for his own Art Exhibition was Soft Machine’s friend Mark Boyle (1926-2005), who projected his sensory films during this concert. Thankfully, the performance was professionally recorded using classical ambient technique, and safely archived until the Henie Onstad Art Centre, and the musicians, granted Reel Recordings the honor and responsibility to present this magnificent recording for CD release. The results sound for itself as demonstrably the finest stereo recording of Soft Machine ever captured on tape. To celebrate and contextualize this two CD release a CD ROM including extensive notes and concert photographs is included. Live at Henie Onstad Art Centre 1971 is not simply another fascinating addition to a series of archival Soft Machine releases; it stands as nothing less than a gift for all.

L'eccellente trasposizione su cd è opera di Mike King, estremamente rispettosa di quanto esistente sui nastri d'origine: "the 'sonic enhancement' consists of little more than manual level adjustments/corrections and a dollop of EQ. Otherwise what's encoded on the CD is the natural tape - No Compression/No Limiting/No Maximization/No sonically stupid processing/Nothing intrusive to compensate for having the recording amputated as an MP3. NO NEED! Several Soft Machine recordings have already suffered that disrespectfully dreadful 'approach' to the digital domain. All this recording requires is accurate amplification and it is unlocked as experiential. End-O-Rant."

Lo fa presso il sito www.davebarb.demon.co.uk, con queste premesse: "For many moons I wrote regular music articles, starting in the UK magazine Sound International in 1979. That series became the basis for my first music book Introducing the Dots, first published in the UK in 1981 and reissued worldwide in 1992. I subsequently wrote an extended series of articles for Keyboard (USA) and KM (Japan), some of which were reprinted in Sound On Sound (UK). When I laid down my pen in June 1998 it came as a bit of a shock to realise that I’d amassed over 120 articles over the course of 13 years. They were mainly about my own music, but also covered the work of musicians I admire (Phil Miller, Mont Campbell, Bill Bruford, Django Bates, Andy Partridge, Eric McWhirter) and other areas which interested me, such as African balafon music, Balinese gamelan, harmonic theory, rhythm programming, working with samples, etc. Recently I found myself leafing through this archive in search of a notated keyboard part to a song Barbara and I were planning to play live (that's one of the advantages of writing about your own music - it makes you notate things which would otherwise be forgotten). As I searched the articles I remembered how much I’d enjoyed writing them; I also recalled that at the time of ceasing my Keyboard writing gig I’d vowed to continue the 'Inside The Music' series online, but somehow never got round to it. Well, after a break of a decade or so I have got round to it, and hope the results will be of interest to anyone out there who, like me, enjoys thinking about the inner workings of music..."

The Life and Work of Barre Phillips is the subject of an exhibition at Nice’s Bibliothèque Louis Nucéra, running from December 11 2009 to February 6 2010. Titled 40 ans de création musicale, the exhibition looks at aspects of the great bassist’s work since moving from America to France in 1969, including documentation of many tours, recordings and more. Films and performance are also part of the programme, with Barre Phillips giving four Saturday afternoon concerts. On December 12, Barre gives a solo concert. The performance on December 19 is headlined “Barre Phillips et la danse” and is a collaboration with choreographer and improviser Emmanuelle Pépin. On January 16 the subject is “Barre Phillips et le cinéma” with special reference to Barre’s work with film-maker Robert Kramer. Jazz is the subject of the February 6 concert and features a Phillips quartet with Laurent Charles (saxophones), Patrice Soletti (guitar) and François Rossi (drums).

PETER BLEGVAD
Imagine, Observe, Remember
14.5 x 22.5 cm paperback format with stiff cover, lavishly illustrated. Peter has been working on this general theme for well over 30 years, and in this incarnation it takes the form of a description and transcription of a series of lectures given to students at Warwick University about memory, observation and imagination, with examples and exercises which though never less than Blegvadianly exotic and esoteric, are equally perceptive, phenomenological and to the point. As a thinking tool, it takes in, amongst many other things, the Art of Memory, Oulipo, Surrealism, Psychology and Francis Galton’s ‘Statistics of Mental Imagery’(1880). The four appendices comprise drawings by students of the (visualised) ‘black substance that came out of his mouth’, (mis) recollections of the tale from which that line was taken’, imagined versions of the story, by some who missed it, recollections and imaginings triggered by observations, the theatre programme for Peter’s dramaturgical Imaginary Media - performed by the students at the end of the course, and a strip cartoon of his own: ‘How to be a Seer’ (12pp). Now if this isn’t the perfect Christmas present…

Per il sessantesimo compleanno di Paul Lovens il festival Phonomanie si trasforma questo fine settimana in un gran festa tra amici e ammiratori, nell'intimo e accogliente Jazzatelier di Ulrichsberg, in Austria: dal 4 al 6 dicembre partecipano in varie combinazioni Paul Lytton, Evan Parker, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Eugene Chadbourne, John Edwards, Paul Hubweber, Günter Christmann, Mats Gustafson, Michael Moore, Phil Wachsmann, Sabina Meyer, Radu Malfatti, Klaus Filip, Tobias Delius, Rudi Mahall, Wilbert de Joode, Serigne C.M. Gueye, John Russell, Carlos Zingaro, Hans Reichel e Wolfgang Mitte.
Auguri Paul!

Paul Lovens is one of the co-inventors and co-founders of that movement within European improvised music that has developed since the 60s as a reaction and an answer to American Free Jazz. This special kind of music making has long emancipated itself from its close ties to jazz and has found forms characterised by absolute autonomy and independence. Lovens will be appearing under the programmatic title of “Vermögen” (Capability) together with musicians with whom he has been working together for a long time. “Capability” means a great deal to Lovens: “being strong, being effective, being capable of doing something, being given the opportunity to do it, feeling under the obligation to do it, being allowed to do it, being empowered.” He and his musical colleagues have this capability, as Lovens underlines: “Even though in free improvisation, which is the style we work in, nothing is for sure and nothing can be taken for granted, there is this sense of security that wells up in me everytime I sit down at my drum set.”

Scrive il produttore Martin Davidson: "Paul Rutherford (1940-2007) was surely the most original and inventive (and enjoyable) trombonist of the last 40 years, and also one of the greatest exponents of free improvisation. It is therefore appropriate and desirable that recordings of his excellent music, like the four in this collection, are made available to the public. The two sets on the first cd were recorded at the Actual-81 festival in London organised by Anthony Wood. The solo set is unusual in that a considerable amount of electronics were used to enhance the trombone or euphonium. The additions include a voice-mike (with added tremolo), a bespoke box made by Ian Mackintosh, and probably standard items such as ring modulators and octave dividers. Three days later, Rutherford convened an improvising brass quartet with fellow trombonist George Lewis, Martin Mayes (French horn) and Melvyn Poore (tuba). They performed two pieces.
My original plan was to issue these two items on a single cd; but it occurred to me that any listener not otherwise familiar with Rutherford’s work would get a strange introduction, as these two are very different to anything else of his on record. So I thought that a second cd of his more typical work from the same period would be appropriate. Riccardo Bergerone recently came up with the Pisa Jazz Festival solo tape, which presents Rutherford without any electronics. Even with just his trombone or euphonium (augmented by his voice) he comes up with a remarkable range of sounds, and unique lines involving wild leaps. The performance of two pieces is almost complete. The final section is something by the working trio that Rutherford set up to contrast with his other trio (Iskra 1903). It features brilliant work by two (then) young musicians as well as the leader: Paul Rogers and Nigel Morris."

The album is a product of collaboration between Ros Stephen who takes care of the string parts and some compositions, Robert who sings and inspires and myself who take care of woodwind and musical production. A lot of other people are involved. I just mentioned it because it is kind of a collaboration rather than G produces Y."

Si intitolerà 'Beefheart: Through The Eyes Of Magic': alcuni estratti si leggono in anteprima in www.propermusic.com/tteom/extracts.pdf

John “ Drumbo” French
Beefheart: Through The Eyes Of Magic
The ultimate book about Captain Beefheart written by the man who spent more time with him than most.

Few names carry such formidable mystique and rabid cult status as Captain Beefheart, who led various lineups of his Magic Band to make some of the most startling, ground-breaking albums of the last century. In 1982, he retired to concentrate on painting, leaving the mythology he’d stoked himself to grow untamed over the years.
John French is better qualified than anyone to talk about Beefheart, joining the Magic Band in 1966 at the age of 17 just before recording their *Safe As Milk *debut album, finding himself plunged into a tyrannical regime which would dominate his life for the next 14 years as he played a major role in eight subsequent albums, including translating the mindblowing avant-blues
assault of 1969’s *Trout Mask Replica *into readable music for the Magic Band from the Captain’s piano poundings under torturous conditions he likens to a cult.
Spanning nearly a thousand pages, French’s remarkable memoir starts with a vivid description of the rarely-documented early 60s Lancaster garage-rock scene which also spawned names like Ry Cooder and Beefheart’s childhood friend and later nemesis Frank Zappa, whose appearances in the book will enthrall his own legion of fans. As his spellbinding, often shocking tale unwinds, he encounters names including jazz giant Ornette Coleman, Jim Morrison and Paul McCartney, writing with dry, sometimes surreal humour and disarming honesty about his old boss and even himself, occasionally bringing in his old Magic Band comrades to jog his memory. The book is packed with new revelations, many previously-unseen photos and enough anecdotes to keep the Beefheart faithful ruminating for years, French finally crystallising and bringing to life over 40 years of legend and speculation in what has to be the ultimate book on the mercurial genius of Captain Beefheart.

Roger Trigaux's post-Univers Zero band, Present, returns with a vengeance on this release: a new studio album CD, plus a three-hour DVD. These are compositions that spread out and expand upon the style of the band's latest works, Number 6 and High Infidelity, and include the Trigaux duo's latest epic, Vertges, as well as Present's slick version of Jack The Ripper, and Pierre Chevalier's fiery, A Last Drop. The DVD is comprised of live footage from the band's two RIO France performances in 2007, and roughly half of the Gouveia Art Rock Festival performance from 2005. As an added bonus, there is archival footage, some of which dates back to the early days of the band, featuring Daniel Denis and Christian Genet. All of this has been exquisitely recorded and mixed by Udi Koomran, with post-video work by Asaf Carmeli, both of whom were out to re-define the parameters of modern-day Rock In Opposition products. The disks come in a spiffy, 8-panel digipack.

Questi è intervistato in www.classicrockrevisited.com/interviewsGentleGiant.htm

Gentle Giant is regarded by many as one of the world's most underrated rock bands. Formed from the ashes of the erstwhile pop group Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, from 1970 to 1980 Gentle Giant released a string of musically and lyrically adventurous albums that challenged the preconceptions of the rock genre while earning the band a rabidly loyal following. Though the band never achieved the same degree of commercial success as its progressive rock contemporaries like ELP, Yes, Genesis or Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant retains a fanatical cult-like audience almost forty years after the release of its first album. On November 3rd Gentle Giant released 'In A Glass House', 'The Power and the Glory', 'Free Hand', 'Interview', 'Playing The Fool', 'The Missing Piece', and 'Giant For A Day' through all digital channels. The albums are re-mastered and each one features several bonus tracks from either live concerts or live radio sessions. The band promises there will be more catalog releases to come in 2010.
Guitarist Gary Green played on all of Gentle Giant's albums and tours. When the band broke up in 1980 Green relocated to America, where he played on Eddie Jobson's 'Green' album. He spent the next several decades in a succession of bands, at one point even leaving the music business entirely. In more recent years Green has resurfaced working with Billy Sherwood, most notably on 'Back Against The Wall' in 2005, and 2006's 'Return To The Dark Side Of The Moon'. In 2009 Gary Green began playing in a new group called Three Friends, so titled after the Gentle Giant album of the same name. The group consisted of former Gentle Giant members Green, Kerry Minnear and Malcolm Mortimore, augmented by additional members and performing the music of Gentle Giant. Gary Green joins us tonight to talk about the remastered Gentle Giant digital releases, his career with the band, Three Friends, and to take some listener calls!

Calling Out Of Context is a festival of experimental musicand sound that fills the ICA for nine days in November. One of the ICA’s Galleries is being used as a performance space, while the other features a recording studio, and the Theatre is hosting gigs, workshops and discussions. The programme across these spaces includes an incredible range of musicians and artists, revealing the vitality and relevance of the sonic avant-garde. Calling Out Of Context features over forty performers and groups, including both emerging figures and well-known names. Many of the participants cross the boundaries between different musical traditions, and the festival (which takes its title from a song by the American underground musician Arthur Russell) draws on the explosively experimental ethos of the 60s and 70s. The programme includes performances by The Red Krayola, Gravetemple, Aaron Dilloway, Seb Rochford, Mira Calix, Rhys Chatham, 9!, James Beckett, AGF and Lucky Dragons, as well as new sound works by Jan St Werner and Robin Watkins, and recording sessions from About, Mica Levi, Alexander Tucker and Woebot. It concludes with a weekend of events dedicated to the British avant-garde musician and activist Cornelius Cardew, featuring contributions from John Tilbury and Ultra-red, amongst others.

Now in its fourth installment, with a fifth in preparation, John Zorn's acclaimed Arcana series has become a major source on new music theory and practice in the 21st century. Rather than an attempt to distill or define a musician's work, Arcana illuminates via personal vision and experience through the undiluted words and thoughts of the practitioners themselves. Elucidating through manifestoes, scores, interviews, notes and critical papers, composer/performers address composing, improvising, teaching, living, touring and thinking in and through music. Essential for composers, musicians, students and fans alike, this challenging and original series provides insight into the work and methodologies of some of the most remarkable creative minds of our time.

Si ascolta sabato 14 novembre, all'interno del programma 'Between The Ears' di BBC Radio 3, a partire dalle 22.45 ora italiana.

Composer Elizabeth Purnell has created a soundscape for Arthur Rimbaud's work A Season In Hell, which was written between April and August 1873 in London and France, when Rimbaud was 18 and in the throes of an intense, transgressive and destructive relationship with Verlaine.
Purnell's setting includes composed music, field recordings and processed sound in a raw response to the words. She set the poems specifically for Robert Wyatt, whose voice, in its high, delicate register, suggests a beyond-the-grave alter-ego to the young Rimbaud.
A mixture of autobiography and enigmatic dream sequence, A Season In Hell sees Rimbaud look back in despair over his life as a poet, combining lucid self-appraisal and hyper-realism with demented vision and hallucinatory surrealism. The 25 pages of A Season In Hell – cut here to a third of its length – are both a staggering testimony to and a tortured recantation of Rimbaud's poetic credo, the "disordering of all the senses".
