Canto Generàl con Louis Moholo-Moholo, ripresi dal vivo nel 2007 a Tivoli e Perpignan, con brani originali appunto di Ottaviano, dei due Minafra Pino e Livio, ma anche classici immortali di Keith Tippett, Mongezi Feza, Dudu Pukwana e Harry Miller.

Wonderfully soulful work from drummer Louis Moholo Moholo – heard here in the company of Canto General – an Italian group, but one whose music is awash in South American inspiration! Reedman Roberto Ottaviano is in the quintet – and he sounds better here than we've heard him in years – blowing with this rich tone alongside trumpeter Pino Minafra, in a musical partnership that almost takes us back to the spirit of Gato Barbieri's Latin America projects of the early 70s! Pianist Livio Minafra brings a real sense of majesty to the music, too – almost a Cuban balance of lyricism and rhythm, which makes for a perfect fit with Moholo's drums and the bass of Roberto Bellatalla. The group perform tunes by some of Moholo's older contemporaries – Harry Miller, Keith Tippett, Dudu Pukwana, and Mongezi Feza – and titles include "Orange Grove", "Thoughts To Geoff", "Dedicated To Mingus", "Angel Normali", and "You Ain't Gonna Know Me Cos You Think You Know Me".

Scrive Kate: "Being a figurative painter, I have always felt part of the Greco-Roman tradition. Recently I have been drawn to explore that legacy. The archetypal story of Diana and Actaeon has captured the imagination of so many artists including Titian and Gainsborough. The impact of a small gouache by Gainsborough, temporarily on show at his house in Sudbury, sparked in me the desire to take on the subject. Of course the National Gallery’s Diana and Actaeon and the Death of Actaeon have ever been an important presence in my life. Living near Dartmoor I have found subjects there to which I return often. To the north of the moor lies Coombe Farm which abuts ancient woodland. This is the setting for my Diana and Actaeon series. In the past two years I have been concentrating on making work around the Ovid story, and I continue to do so."

Un reportage fotografico del concerto degli Artaud Beats a Les Lilas lo scorso 5 giugno - migliore negli esiti di quelli tenuti di recente tanto al R.I.O. francese quanto a quello giapponese, secondo alcuni protagonisti - è al sito della rivista online Traverses. Qualche copia personalizzata del cd di esordio del gruppo, Logos, è forse ancora disponibile presso Yumi Hara Cawkwell, che dei brani scelti per l'album ha anche curato i missaggi. Di uno, E = mc2, è stato infine preferito il mix proposto da Bob Drake: l'originale è tuttavia conservato in Soundcloud, seppure in versione non definitiva.

Triste notizia quella dell'improvvisa scomparsa di Gendos Chamzyryn, appena cinquantenne, percussionista e cantante di Tuva noto sulla scena internazionale grazie a collaborazioni con Peter Kowald e Sainkho Namtchylak, avvezzo alle musiche contemporanee - incluso rock e jazz d'avanguardia - ma anche conoscitore e interprete di musiche di antichissima tradizione della sua terra, in particolare quelle di forma meditativa, terapeutica e spirituale, dai profondi legami con le culture sciamaniche. Era esperto di canto armonico e di gola, soprattutto Kargyraa e Khoomei. Delle sue molteplici attività come musicista e performer la più nota in Italia è senz'altro la sua partecipazione al progetto K-Space con Tim Hodgkinson e Ken Hyder, fin dall'epoca dei primissimi concerti del trio organizzati dal Circ.a a inizio anni duemila (Pescara, Lecco, Firenze), cui han fatto seguito negli anni diverse altre occasioni (a Schio, Forlì, Palermo e Ivrea tra queste, e a Roma anche con Ossatura) fino alla pubblicazione dell'album Black Sky per l'etichetta Setola di maiale: "Black Sky? Mike Cooper propone questa sera a Roma - al Blutopia, via del Pigneto 116, con inizio alle ore 19.30 - un omaggio al compianto John Renbourn: "Conoscevo John dagli anni Sessanta, nel periodo in cui facevo parte dell'organizzazione di un folk club a Reading, la mia città, dove lo invitammo spesso a suonare. In seguito è capitato anche di incontrarci a Roma proprio nel periodo in cui venni a vivere qui. Lui era sicuramente uno dei musicisti preferiti di Giancarlo Cesaroni, il fondatore del Folk Studio di Trastevere. Anche se le nostre musiche provengono dalle stesse radici - country blues acustico - e condividono un amore per il jazz e l'improvvisazione, in realtà abbiamo sviluppato due approcci molto diversi. John amava la musica inglese, dal folk, alla classica, al barocco. Qualcosa che personalmente non ho mai condiviso né tentato di seguire. John si considerava prima di tutto un chitarrista e poi un cantante. L'esatto opposto di me, che mi sono sempre considerato prima cantante e poi chitarrista. In questa serata non suonerò niente di quello che avrebbe suonato John se fosse stato tra noi, a parte forse una o due canzoni di Blind Boy Fuller, uno che John amava molto ascoltare, e talvolta interpretare nel suo stile unico."

I don't understand what anybody sees in it at all. It sounds to me like somebody going up and down the neck with the simplest sort of scales that you can possibly think of. Like there's a kind of blues scale that's one of the first things you learn when you're learning how to play lead. Then you pick up on the fact that depending on the key the song is in it sounds different, you know?"

Proseguono ad Amsterdam i festeggiamenti per gli ottant'anni di Misha Mengelberg, con omaggi affettuosi e iniziative di alto valore che in parte sfumano l'attenzione dal rapido e purtroppo inesorabile declino delle condizioni di salute del grande pianista e compositore: concerti e conferenze in suo onore, un'importante retrospettiva fotografica al Bimhuis (Misha Criss-Cross), la pubblicazione in cd e dvd (Misha enzovoort) della sua ultima vera apparizione pubblica - al Vortex londinese, nel febbraio 2013 - e il sospirato debutto in scena pochi giorni fa dell'opera Koeien, sempre e perennemente incompiuta. Domani è la volta dell'incontro della Jazz Orchestra del Concertgebouw con le partiture e gli arrangiamenti di Mengelberg, nonché con la lunga tradizione dell'Instant Composers Pool, in un programma che vedrà intervenire sul palco anche Han Bennink, Michael Moore e Wolter Wierbos.

Opnieuw ontmoeten het Jazz Orchestra of the Concertgebouw en het ICP elkaar. Al sinds de late jaren negentig speelt het Jazz Orchestra het werk van Misha Mengelberg. Eerst in een tribute aan het Piet Noordijk & Misha Mengelberg Kwartet. Vervolgens tijdens een tournee met Mengelberg en Theo Loevendie, twee belangrijke vernieuwers van de Nederlandse geïmproviseerde muziek. Nu wijdt het JOC ter ere van zijn tachtigste verjaardag een compleet programma aan Misha Mengelberg.

Il mese scorso Coralie Van Rietschoten ha documentato in video la prima visita in assoluto dei Magma in Cina, cinque giorni di viaggi per oltre tremila chilometri, con concerti a Shenzhen, Shanghai e Pechino, incontri, eventi e avventure tra le più disparate. E al sito della Cuneiform si porge omaggio in modo speciale anche a Daevid Allen, in particolare ricordando la pubblicazione nel 2004 dell'album Jet Propelled Photographs, con le strepitose/strepitanti reinterpretazioni del più antico catalogo Soft Machine a nome University of Errors.

A creative musical catalyst, Daevid was a key figure in the founding of some of the 20th century's most innovative rock bands, including Soft Machine and Gong. His music pushed the boundaries of pop music, psychedelia and art, and he expanded the technical possibilities of his instruments, inventing the "glissando guitar" technique and experimenting with tape loops and musique concrete.
Cuneiform worked with Daevid on the 2004 release of Jet Propelled Photographs by University of Errors, one of his last bands. The album featured University of Errors performing new versions of songs that Daevid played on when he was a member of Soft Machine in 1966-67. All Music Guide noted that “There's nothing musty and quaint about any of the music on this CD. It's still strangely compelling 40 years later, and for this, Allen certainly deserves some major credit.” Daevid was a creative genius, continually, ceaselessly transforming what existed into what it could be, into something new.

British Jazz and beyond has lost one of its most passionate advocates: Michael King, a globally-respected and uniquely talented sound engineer, producer, tape restorer, researcher/historian/writer, and the head of the record label Reel Recordings. Mike committed suicide on March 2nd, 2015 in Hamilton, Ontario, two weeks before his 58th birthday.
Mike King was a Canadian sound engineer, tape restorer, and fan of British music who devoted his professional career to unearthing, restoring, and/or assisting the commercial release of previously unreleased recordings by many of the key figures in Britain's avant-garde jazz underground of the 1960's, 1970s and 1980s. He was a true sonic archaeologist, determinedly researching forgotten archives and pursuing lost tapes; an Indiana Jones audiophile explorer who was absolutely smitten by music and the romance of unearthing sonic treasure.

E' con il concerto di stasera presso il club Le Triton a Les Lilas (Francia) che si ufficializza l'uscita del primo cd degli Artaud Beats: si intitola Logos, e contiene registrazioni effettutate in studio a Londra nella prima metà dello scorso anno. Seguirà a breve un secondo album, con registrazioni tratte dai concerti dal vivo del quartetto, peraltro già ben documentati finora con video e cd autoprodotti e personalizzati.

The Artaud Beats (Geoff Leigh: sax, fl, vo, electronics, Yumi Hara: p, vo, Chris Cutler: dr, John Greaves: b, vo) came together in a chance encounter at Jean-Hervé Péron's Avantgarde Festival in Schiphorst, 2009. Geoff Leigh and Yumi Hara were there as a duo, Chris Cutler and John Greaves with Peter Blegvad and Dagmar Krause. It was Geoff who proposed the quartet and Jean-Hervé enthusiastically supported the idea - since Geoff, Chris, and John had all been in Henry Cow together when they toured with Faust; and Yumi seemed the perfect companion. The concert was fine, the public happy and a Norwegian promoter from Bodo, who happened to be in the audience, immediately invited us to his next festival. So our casual meeting metamorphosed into a band. We gave ourselves a name: The Artaud Beats, and made ourselves available. Two tours of Japan and a box-set later, we 're back - still with no programme and no songs, and still engaged in the hazardous but honourable art of conjuring music out of empty air.

"These gently-chosen musicians (and their constituents) play the music of the aforementioned and much-beloved man, as well as extrapolate (speculate?) as to his influence and his influences. Original compositions by the performers also figure in the proceedings, played in loving tribute to his impact on this modern past and the past’s post, as well as our imminent future."

Alcune erano venute alla luce anche in concerto a Collisioni l'anno scorso, nelle versioni adattate dal gruppo allestito ad hoc da Massimo Giuntoli. Ora, dopo esser circolate informalmente tra amici e conoscenti, sono ufficialmente disponibili le deliziose composizioni di Jonathan Coe, una dozzina, raccolte con il titolo Unnecessary Music, eseguite dall'autore in solitudine, con tastiere e chitarre. Pubblicate qualche giorno fa da Spa Road Records e diffuse tramite Bandcamp.

Spiega Coe: "All of the pieces in this collection are performed by me alone, on guitars and keyboards. Some of them are old, and some are relatively new. The earliest tune, Empty Mornings, was written in 1984. Best Forgotten, Snow Sequence and Kaleidoscope of Rainclouds date from roughly the same time. They were written using an analogue keyboard, the Casio 1000P, which featured a simple arpeggiator, generating the repetitive melodic patterns which form the basis of each piece. I wrote many hours' worth of this kind of music in the 1980s, but then my output tailed away as I began to concentrate on other things. In the early 2000s I started playing the piano again, and wrote pieces such as Memory Loop, Repeating Myself, Back into the Garden and Sarah at the Beach. Some of these tunes were written as lullabies for my then young daughters. Christmas Eve, Little Heath, Battersea Park and Suspended Moment are all more recent pieces, written and recorded using Ableton Live which at the moment is my software of choice.
The privately-pressed CD containing these twelve tracks was originally intended only for my friends, but some of them have since persuaded me to share them online."

Si riascolta ancora per qualche giorno dal sito web della BBC la puntata di lunedì scorso del programma radiofonico Jazz on 3, dedicata a una delle maggiori e più articolate composizioni degli ultimi anni di Keith Tippett, The Nine Dances Of Patrick O'Gonogon. La sessione è stata registrata dal vivo negli studi londinesi Livingston il 19 aprile 2015, con la partecipazione dell'ottetto: Tippett, Fulvio Sigurtà, Sam Mayne, James Gardiner-Bateman, Richard Foote, Rob Harvey, Tom McCredie e Peter Fairclough. C'è anche Julie Tippetts, ospite nel segmento The Dance Of Her Returning, del cui testo è autrice.

Over the past 40 years Keith Tippett has forged a path as one of the most important figures of the European scene. In the early 70s his big band Centipede did much to fuse the worlds of rock and jazz (as did his work with prog group King Crimson), whilst his time with exiled South African musicians Harry Miller and Louis Moholo permanently changed the sound of British free music. Today Tippett's presence as a composer and pianist continues to resonate. Here in a special session for Jazz on 3 he performs The Nine Dances Of Patrick O'Gonogon - his latest suite, inspired by his own Irish heritage.
Joining him in the studio are musicians from a younger generation, including Fulvio Sigurtà on trumpet and flugel horn, Sam Mayne and James Gardiner-Bateman on reeds, Richard Foote and Rob Harvey on trombones and bassist Tom McCredie, whilst Tippett's longstanding comrade Peter Fairclough completes the line-up on drums and percussion.
