Guillaume Belhomme e Philippe Robert si sono sfidati a lungo e con passione nella lotta stile libero, apprendendo colpi e mosse l'uno dall'altro e dalle rispettive collezioni di free jazz in vinile. Di quei loro incontri vennero pubblicate le cronache, a puntate, su una piccola fanzine del tempo. Si credevano ormai perdute, invece le si ritrovano tali e quali in Free Fight (Lenka lente, 2024).
En 2011 et 2012, Guillaume Belhomme et Philippe Robert se sont livré bataille à coups de vinyles de free jazz tirés de leurs collections. Per la versione musical bisognerà attendere ancora un po', ma per i testi che ne costituiscono la trama si può già dare un'occhiata al sito web dell'autore, Jesse Harris: Love Songs, scene di un discorso amoroso con le musiche di John Zorn ideate per la voce di Petra Haden, ora in cd - Love Songs Live, su Tzadik - con registrazioni tratte da un concerto dello scorso settembre a Brooklyn.
"In September 2023, Petra Haden, pianist Brian Marsella, bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Ches Smith presented all of the songs at two concerts at National Sawdust in Brooklyn, New York as part of Zorn’s 70th birthday celebrations. Fortunately, during the sound check right before the second concert, we made the last-minute decision to have the club make a multi-track recording of the concert. This album is that second concert in its entirety. DAME, c'est l'acronyme pour Distribution Ambiances Magnétiques Etcetera. C'est une compagnie dédiée principalement à l'enregistrement, la promotion et la distribution d'enregistrements sonores de musiques nouvelles sous tous supports, qu’elles soient bruitistes, improvisées, électroniques, poétiques, contemporaines ou jazz! C'est une compagnie qui a été fondée en 1991 et incorporée en 1993 par Joane Hétu qui était alors âgée de 33 ans et 33 ans plus tard, voilà qu'elle laisse à d'autres la suite de cette histoire. Cette histoire a commencé avec Ambiances Magnétiques, étiquette fondée en 1982-83 par neufs musiciens, musiciennes: René Lussier, André Duchesne, Robert Marcel Lepage, Jean Derome, Joane Hétu, Diane Labrosse, Danielle Palardy Roger, Martin Tétreault et Michel F Côté. C'est la genèse, l'encrage de DAME. Avec les années, ce sont ajoutées des étiquettes indépendantes, et ce à partir de 2000 avec Monsieur fauteux-m'entendez-vous?, en 2004 Collection QB, en 2006 Malasartes Musiques et la dernière étiquette, en 2017, uniquement numérique, Mikroclimat. Petite statistique intéressante, DAME, donc Joane Hétu, a produit et coproduit en collaboration avec les artistes de ces étiquettes, 361 albums pendant ces 33 années, on peut faire un calcul rapide, ça fait plus de 10 albums par année. La fille n'a pas chômé... Joane: "J'aime la musique et j'aime ceux qui la font. Je me suis toujours sentie bien avec cette communauté. Je vous remercie de votre confiance et de votre appui."
Dei Soft Machine in classico quartetto - Ratledge e Wyatt con Hopper e Dean - è ormai imminente la pubblicazione unitaria e in veste deluxe di entrambi gli 'storici' concerti tenuti a fine febbraio 1971 all'Henie-Onstad Art Center di Høvikodden in Norvegia. Se ne è assunta l'onere (e l'onore) la benamata Cuneiform Records, che per ora sconsiglia il pubblico europeo di prenotarsene una copia dagli Stati Uniti ('the shipping costs are horrendous'). Nell'attesa: Virtually e Teeth.
Magari da noi lo si è incrociato come Jasmin, la rivoluzione del sesso, quando prometteva 'Notti segrete con gli hippies', 'Ragazze dipinte e pop-art', 'Camere d'assaggio proibite' senza troppo indicare chi vi era ritratto oltre a Paco Rabanne e Salvador Dalì. Ma nel film Les teenagers di Pierre Roustang (1968) si vedono benissimo (anche) i Soft Machine, in casa, in giro, a far prove e dal vivo allo Speakeasy con Pamela Howard scatenata nelle danze, Daevid Allen al flauto e Robert Wyatt con baffi, barbetta, giacca & cravatta. Ora ancor meglio nella versione in dvd.
Un montage de séquences censées refléter 'le résultat d’une exploration à travers le monde de la jeunesse d’aujourd’hui'. Côté sport: des Anglais amateurs de courses automobiles, un match de rugby féminin à Limoges avec échange des maillots, des skieurs aveugles, une école de pilotage pour le sport automobile. A Paris, un règlement de comptes entre deux bandes rivales, la pratique du 'scalp' qui serait une entreprise morale visant à dégoûter les vieux messieurs riches qui profitent des faibles jeunes femmes pauvres. Puis des vues sur les 50 000 hippies assemblés à Central Park. Les gardes rouges de Pékin. Une séquence où Salvador Dali, entouré de groupies, fait manger un livre. Une autre où Paco Rabanne, qui fait essayer ses robes, parle de style, de point de rupture et de confusion des sexes. A Munich, des garçons en minijupes. Sur les places touristiques d’Angleterre, une fille dépoitraillée qui tente de gagner un pari de l’audace. Au large, sur un bateau émet une radio pirate, la fameuse Radio Caroline. A Londres toujours, 'la plus grande cabine d’essayage du monde' est l’attraction. Dans un appartement, Soft Machine, groupe rock tout juste formé en 1966, repète, offrant un témoignage beaucoup plus pertinent de l’esprit psychédélique britannique que les peintures pop sur corps qui lui succèdent. La Suède enfin, présentée comme 'prélude à l’an 2000'. Le film se clôt par un cours d’éducation sexuelle pour les 12 ans, à Stockholm.
Di quegli stessi anni di cui ha scritto MacCormick, e di molte esperienze con lui condivise, aveva parecchio da riferire anche Phil Manzanera, e curiosamente lo fa ora, quasi in contemporanea, in alcune parti della sua estesa autobiografia, Revolución to Roxy (Wordzworth Publishing, 2024). Scrive Richard Williams, che conobbe il chitarrista proprio ai tempi di Quiet Sun: "Phil Manzanera has been a friend since I first interviewed him during the days of Quiet Sun, the band of school friends he was in before being recruited by Roxy Music in time to play on their debut album in 1972. So I can’t pretend to be completely objective about Revolución to Roxy, his newly published autobiography. But I can be completely honest in saying that it will prove informative and entertaining to anyone who’s followed his career over the past half-century, even from a distance."

Brought up on an early teenage musical diet of Beethoven, Brahms, the Beatles, Stax, and Tamla Motown, an accidental meeting with Robert Wyatt and the newly formed Soft Machine transformed his world view. Now, radically influenced by the Softs, the Mothers of Invention, Stravinsky, and Charlie Mingus, the book describes his first faltering steps to musical anonymity with school friend and psychedelic guitar titan, Roxy Music’s Phil Manzanera, and their school band, Pooh and the Ostrich Feather. An ‘accidental’ bass player with failed prog rock combo Quiet Sun, he somehow survived to play, sometimes tour, and record with Robert Wyatt in Matching Mole, and on his album ‘Ruth is Stranger than Richard’; Phil Manzanera on his solo albums ‘Diamond Head’, ‘Listen Now’, and ‘K-Scope’; on two Brian Eno albums; with the short-lived 801 which spawned the highly acclaimed '801 Live' album and finally with the doomed and doom-laden Random Hold. On the way, the book touches on the social and political issues which influenced the lyrics he and his late brother, and author of Revolution in the Head, Ian MacDonald, contributed to Phil Manzanera’s 70s albums. Antologia speciale in forma di libro a fisarmonica - con allegato cd audio - è quella prodotta da InPolySons in omaggio al poliedrico artista eremita ed anti-accademico Roger-Edmond Chomeaux, più noto come Chomo (1907-1999), con una scelta di alcune sue poesie in lingua altra pazientemente documentate e trascritte da Denis Tagu e Claude Prévost, riprodotte nella grafia originale e declamate dall'autore stesso: Poèmes illettrés pour un langage parallèle.
Chomo is a unique French creator (sculptor, painter, architect, poet, musician, filmmaker) who lived almost the entire 20th century, including 40 years as a hermit in the Fontainebleau forest near Paris. Chomo recorded hundreds of texts, poems, and music alone in his Préludian Art Village in Achères-la-Forêt on old tape recorders, sometimes layering texts and sound experiments. He wrote his poems with a particular script and using his own phonetic alphabet, rejecting all societal constraints. The book reproduces some of his graphic poems. The CD contains four recordings of poems, even sound-poems, thanks to the archiving initiated by Laurent Danchin. The booklet also includes the transcription into "academic" French ("cacademic" as Chomo would say...) of the original texts by Chomo reproduced here.

Il numero di copie disponibili in cd magari è esiguo, ma la creatività del suo autore è illimitata: Natura Morta, nuovo album di Dave Newhouse, esce finalmente a suo nome dopo la conclusione della bella e variegata serie Manna/Mirage. Vi prendono parte, pur da lontano, Sean Rickman, Paul Sears, Jerry King, Guy Segers, John Greaves, Luciano Margorani e Rich O'Meara tra gli altri.
Sean O'Hagan con The High Llamas brevemente dal vivo nel programma Riley & Coe di Marc Riley e Gideon Coe per BBC Radio 6, nei giorni del lancio del nuovo album Hey Panda pubblicato da Drag City. Doppio ensemble di musicisti per il secondo episodio della drammatica serie How Will We Recognize Each Other, concepita da Chris Cochrane nel periodo più duro della pandemia e del lockdown: finalmente dal vivo qualche settimana fa al Roulette, trasmesso in diretta streaming e ora conservato nei preziosi archivi del benemerito centro d'arte newyorkese.
Chris Cochrane is a Brooklyn-based musician guitarist improviser noise maker collaborator and composer. Chris has worked with many musicians including Zeena Parkins, Marc Ribot, Stew and Eszter Balint and with countless others since arriving full time in NYC, in 1982. He plans to continue to do so. He has performed at various international music festivals since then as well. He has composed music for dance and theater for Ishmael Houston-Jones, Dennis Cooper, Nayland Blake, Neil Greenberg and Circus Amok. He was in the bands No Safety and Curlew, and is currently working in several music projects: Excavation with John Thayer, Nick Jozwiak and Shoko Nagai, Alphawhore with Gordon Beeferman and Kevin Shea, The Chutneys with Fast Forward and Gelsey Bell and Lampshade with Viv Corringham and Miguel Fransconi, Butt Dial with Sulynn Hago and Marlon Cherry and Seagull Brian with Nick Didkovsky and Mark Howell. Chris recently collaborated on creating a score with Kevin Bud Jones for Jim Hubbard’s film Nostalgia which was shown as part of the AIDS memorial programming on November 19, 2023.

Se già è difficile trattenere uno slancio di affetto verso Wyatt, ovunque e comunque, impossibile lo diventa nel rivedere il breve video che lo ritrae partecipe ed entusiasta tra il pubblico durante l'esibizione dell'israeliano Evyatar Banai - per l'occasione con il bassista Oded Goldschmidt - ai tempi del suo Meltdown londinese, allora alla nona edizione, nel giugno 2001. Il brano è Yesh Li Sikooy (I've Got A Chance), tratto dall'album di esordio di Banai: "I feel that something’s changing, the tiredness will pass and the light will rise..."
E un pensiero affettuoso lo rivolgono in molti direttamente a Robert Wyatt, dopo aver appreso delle sue attuali condizioni di salute dal figlio Sam: "Towards the end of last year Robert's recent memory loss was diagnosed as being progressive. He is also physically very frail and no longer able to reply to messages and letters or listen to other people's music and comment on it. He has very much appreciated all he's received in the past, and is very moved by people’s loyalty and concern for him over the years. His memory is variable, and if you meet him he may not remember who you are unless you’re a close friend or family. Thankfully, he’s coping well, as he always has with physical adversity, and he’s being well looked after." Auguri di cuore, Robert!

Un pensiero a Gharbzadegi, brano tra i più celebri di uno dei più importanti lavori di Robert Wyatt, Old Rottenhat (Rough Trade, 1985), hanno voluto rivolgere Luciano Margorani e gli amici Stefano Zorzanello, Lello Colombo, Jacopo Costa e Luca Zarbano. La loro versione, ora disponibile su Bandcamp, è prontamente annoverata da Jean-Paul Marillier nella sezione Une liste (provisoire) des reprises del suo splendido archivio wyattiano.

Nuovo doppio omaggio al compianto Alan Tomlinson (1947-2024) da Scatter: un inedito del suo Trio con Dave Tucker e Roger Turner colto dal vivo in condizioni di inimmaginabili difficoltà a Colonia, in Germania, nel 1993 (Loft 1993) e l'esemplare lettura di una criptica partitura grafica di Lawrence Casserley (76) ripetuta in occasione di due suoi compleanni, nel 2017 e nel 2021. In proposito nota l'autore: "The first performance was scheduled for the Colourscape Music Festival on 17 September, 2017. As so often happens that was one of those days when I gave everybody else the technical help they needed at the expense of my own, and the premier was marred by problems. Earlier, in our preparation period, I had asked Alan to record his part so I could practice the processing part on my own. It is one of these practice sessions that makes up the '2017 version'. In 2021 Catherine Pluygers of the London New Wind Festival asked for a piece to celebrate my 80th birthday. Knowing that Alan would be involved, I suggested a reprise of 76. This time everything worked fine, Alan was magnificent, of course, and the performance was a big success - the '2021 version'. Very sadly, the great, the wonderful, the beautiful Alan Tomlinson died before we could issue these recordings. I present them here in loving memory of an extraordinary man."

E' stata la Hoorgi House ad occuparsi finora di ripubblicare gli album dell'amatissimo Ivor Cutler (1923-2006), facendo seguire a Privilege, A Wet Handle e A Flat Man - divenuti nel tempo rarissimi - l'inedito Singing While Dead. Dallo scorso anno la sua opera di divulgazione si è estesa anche al campo letterario ed editoriale, recuperando in occasione del centenario della nascita del Nostro dapprima Life in a Scotch Sitting Room, Volume 2 e successivamente Gruts, and Other Wireless Menu. Quest'ultimo comprende un centinaio di testi scritti per la BBC tra il 1959 e il 1965, alcuni dei quali inediti, pazientemente raccolti da Ian Greaves assieme a numerosi disegni originali. Hoorgi House, the official imprint of the Ivor Cutler estate, is committed to reissuing the work of the Glasgow poet, singer, musician, teacher, painter, illustrator, sculptor and playwright who died in 2006. Across a wide-ranging career which lasted more than half a century, he published 29 books - many self-illustrated and several of them intended for children - as well as 11 albums of songs, poems, stories, dialogues and plays. He was also prolific on radio and television, clocking up over 400 appearances. Before The Beatles, before John Peel, and even before he turned to poetry, Ivor Cutler was a radio star. His self-penned monologues and sketches for the BBC Home Service were an instant hit, charming adult listeners and children alike. The long out-of-print Life in a Scotch Sitting Room, Volume 2 was reissued in September 2022. Gruts, and Other Wireless Menu brings together almost 100 prose pieces written for BBC Radio between 1959-65. This includes the contents of previous collections Gruts, Cock-a-doodle-don't! and Fremsley, as well as a number of unpublished and long lost stories - edited by broadcasting historian Ian Greaves - which have not been available in any form since their original transmission.
Torna ad essere proposto in pubblico uno dei lavori più noti del Chris Cutler degli anni più recenti, Conspiracies, divenuto nel tempo terreno di prova per interpretazione di partiture grafiche e messa in pratica di dinamiche cooperative da parte di ensemble anche occasionali ed eterogenei. Lo affrontano domani gli studenti dell'University of East London a Stratford, aiutati come nei corsi degli anni scorsi da Yumi Hara e Guy Harries in qualità di loro docenti. Un'esecuzione in tutt'altra situazione, un concerto del 2019 a Tønsberg og Færde (Norvegia), è consultabile su YT, mentre una del 2017 a Novi Sad (Serbia) è documentata in cd da kuda.org.
Il libro che ha in mente di scrivere su una delle sue più grandi passioni, Giorgio Gomelsky, è ben lontano dall'esser completato, ma già annuncia che il titolo potrebbe essere The Gomelsky Recordings. Intanto Rick Rees, autore della prefazione al libro di Francis Daumaurier sull'argomento, For Your Love (Supernova Books, 2023), e che ama autodefinirsi The Non-Writer, continua a raccogliere materiali, interviste, testimonianze utili al suo progetto, anche in senso lato. In tempi relativamente recenti ha sentito Eddy Offord, Rick Brown, Bill Laswell e i membri storici di Material, Fred Frith, Steve Feigenbaum e molti Muffins, Rhys Chatham, George Cartwright, Wharton Tiers e Jim McCarty. Un omaggio al grande Jimmy Hastings, flautista e sassofonista responsabile di alcune tra le pagine più emozionanti dell'intera letteratura canterburyana - soprattutto con Caravan, Soft Machine, Hatfield and the North e National Health - è in programma a Twickenham, sobborgo a ovest di Londra, domenica prossima in apertura della nuova stagione di Way Out West. In maggior evidenza sarà il suo lato di jazzista melodico e gentile, autore di brani originali con il suo quartetto e interprete di classici di Clifford Brown, Horace Silver, Hank Mobley e Cannonball Adderley. Tra i musicisti sono annunciati Nick Mills, Tony Woods, Pete Hurt, Chris Biscoe, Nette Robinson, Tom Millar, Steve Watts e Gary Willcox.
A true jazz gentleman, Jimmy’s saxophone and flute playing have taken him from Aberdeen through the BBC Radio Band, concerts with Frank Sinatra, Aretha Franklin and Tony Bennett, Caravan, Hatfield and the North, jazz gigs with Art Farmer, Red Rodney and Lanny Morgan, The Dankworth Generations Band, The Tony Kinsey Big Band and The Humphrey Lyttelton Band, to recording with Radiohead. Jimmy’s own jazz small groups, particularly those with Dave and John Horler, feature his tenor sax and flute and show the breadth of his abilities.

Protagonista in prima persona di quella scuola - anche se non sempre il suo più efficace testimonial - è Richard Sinclair, che prosegue su Bandcamp la meritoria pubblicazione di materiali rari, inediti e non ufficiali riguardanti i suoi trascorsi in Caravan, Delivery, Hatfield and the North, Camel, National Health, In Cahoots, in solo, con Caravan of Dreams e in decine di altre formazioni. Molte cose sono già passate di mano in mano tra appassionati e collezionisti nel corso degli anni, altre sono di più recente acquisizione (tipo Share It and Destroy), alcune naturalmente più godibili di altre ma tutte meritevoli di essere considerate anche dal punto di vista dello storico e dell'archivista. Possono aiutare, cum grano salis, le elencazioni fornite in questi giorni direttamente dal Nostro in fatto di cronologia, discografia, attività concertistiche e collaborazioni.
Un altro giovane allievo della cosiddetta scuola di Canterbury è ormai pronto per il diploma, ora che alla sessione d'esame - presso la spagnola áMARXE - manca meno di un mese. Dove e come abbia compiuto fin qui i suoi studi, con chiari maestri ma da autodidatta, lo certifica egli stesso al suo canale YT: Tom Penaguin.
Dopo Endless Trip, Psychedelia e Galactic Ramble dedicati ad album di pop, folk, rock classico e alternativo in auge soprattutto in Gran Bretagna, Stati Uniti e Canada negli anni Sessanta e Settanta, Richard Morton Jack consegna a Lansdowne Books Labyrinth, il suo nuovo almanacco riservato stavolta al jazz britannico dell'epoca d'oro, radunando immagini in grande formato, recensioni, pubblicità e note di copertina di oltre trecento album pubblicati negli anni tra il 1960 e il 1975. Ne cita qualcuno Richard Williams al suo blog The Blue Moment, rivelando il suo preferito solo a fine recensione: "What a time it was - although it was always a struggle for those trying to make a living in jazz clubs up and down the country, despite the efforts of intrepid A&R men/producers like Denis Preston, Terry Brown, Peter Eden and Giorgio Gomelsky to persuade Decca, EMI, Philips, Pye, Polydor and CBS to record this adventurous music. Labyrinth finds a different and very enjoyable way of telling the story, exploiting the artwork and the information contained within 12 x 12 album jackets, back in the days of helpful sleeve notes. Duncan Heining racconta a Klemen Breznikar di It’s Psychedelic Baby la nascita e l'evoluzione del suo splendido volume And Did Those Feet... Six British Jazz Composers dedicato alla vita e alle opere di Michael Garrick, Mike Gibbs, Barry Guy, John Mayer, Keith Tippett e Mike Westbrook, pubblicato qualche mese fa da Jazz in Britain. Con un cenno anche al doppio cd antologico che ne ha accompagnato le prime cinquecento copie, divenuto inevitabilmente oggetto esso stesso di culto e ammirazione.
As a seasoned jazz historian and writer, Duncan Heining brings a wealth of knowledge and insight to this project. His meticulous research and deep understanding of the cultural and artistic landscapes of the 1960s provide the backdrop against which these six composers emerged and flourished. Through approximately 20,000 words dedicated to each artist, Heining paints vivid portraits of their lives, influences, and contributions to the jazz world.
