"The BIG news or should I say bug news is the 8-CD box set Insect and Western, truly an art object but no less a musical event on a grand scale. Players from many countries and most states in the union have taken part in performances involving works from my Insect and Western series. Documentation to date has been highlighted by three separate discs on the British Leo label: Insect Attracter, Worms with Strings and Beauty and the Bloodsucker. This deluxe box set contains all three of these discs in their original CD—not CD-R—pressings plus all the liner booklet and tray card art. In addition owners will find the Bedbugs CD-R featuring fine jazz players from the St. Petersburg, Florida scene. Plus there are four more discs of previously unreleased material. Sacred Insects of Ancient Egypt is the only new title that will also be available separately, see description below. The two-disc Butterfly Garden examines this suite in contrasting solo and septet modes: the maestro Keiji Haino dug the solo performance, taped at The Stone in New York City in May of 2006. Finally there is a brand new disc overviewing various compositions in the series in more recent performances, including the Emotional and Intellectual World of the Cockroach, a new version of the Worms With Strings suite and excerpts from a French workshop version of Sacred Insects of Ancient Egypt done without my physical participation. Burning Shed annuncia l'uscita di due importanti documenti d'archivio riguardanti Uriel ed Egg, formazioni cruciali della scena inglese sperimentale e sotterranea della fine degli anni sessanta cui diedero vita prima come quartetto - con Steve Hillage - e poi come trio Dave Stewart, Mont Campbell e Clive Brooks. Molti i materiali raccolti in Arzachel Collectors Edition e The Metronomical Society, sia ufficiali sia portati alla luce ora per la prima volta, incluse immagini e testimonianze d'epoca prodotte direttamente dai protagonisti. Tante e tali da condurre alla pubblicazione di un vero e proprio libro a sé stante, dal titolo Copious Notes, redatto e curato dall'imbattibile, anche con la penna, Stewart. Che scrive: "While compiling the sleeve notes for the two Egg archive CDs I asked my colleagues to send me their recollections of the era. Mont Campbell and Antony Vinall (a lifelong friend who was at school with us and wrote some of the Arzachel lyrics) responded so enthusiastically - and in such great detail - that I couldn't bear to hack their contributions down to size to fit the two CD booklets. Instead, I thought it would be nice to create a special booklet to accompany the CDs which would include our unexpurgated memoirs and other related text. That gave me the opportunity to write at length about the music and add my own memoirs. It also meant we could include song lyrics and many more photos of Uriel, Egg and the Ottawa Company taken by Terry Yetton between 1968 and 1972. Copious Notes turned into quite a labour of love - reading it is probably the closest you can get to experiencing the sights, sounds, smells and sensations of our corner of the experimental / underground UK music scene of the late '60s."

Esce per Emanem un album del compianto Paul Rutherford, Solo in Berlin 1975, che il trombonista aveva vanamente cercato di veder pubblicato a suo tempo; si tratta di brani quasi completamente inediti tratti da concerti e sedute di improvvisazione tenuti a Berlino nel marzo e nel novembre del 1975. A scanso di equivoci rispetto alla pubblicazione postuma di questi materiali, così scrive - non senza amara ironia - Martin Davidson, titolare dell'encomiabile etichetta:

"These recordings were among those that Paul Rutherford had been trying to get issued for several years. I had made enquiries about obtaining them, but sadly the tapes did not materialise until after his untimely death. I have never understood why interest in artists seems to increase after they are no longer around to appreciate it. (Maybe I should kill the musicians on Emanem to boost sales!) Therefore I am somewhat loath to issue this CD at this juncture, in case I give the impression of cashing in on a disturbingly sad event. However, the music contained herein is so superb that it is crying out to be put into the public domain, rather than continue to languish in the vaults. Until now Rutherford’s masterpiece has generally been considered to be The Gentle Harm of the Bourgeoisie – quite rightly in my opinion (vested interests aside) – but I think this Berlin collection from the following year is at least as good. Hopefully it will help to illustrate why I consider Rutherford (along with Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, and a handful of others) to have been one of the greatest innovative and creative instrumentalists."

Musica Jazz di questo mese ha in serbo un dono preziosissimo: il cd allegato è infatti un inedito interamente dedicato ai concerti italiani tenuti lo scorso giugno da Annette Peacock - in solitudine o in coppia con il percussionista Roberto Dani - a Ferrara, Vignola, Mondaino, Parma e Lugo, nell'ambito di un progetto speciale della regione Emilia-Romagna rivolto ad artisti della musica contemporanea internazionale. Non meno prezioso del cd è l'inserto monografico della rivista, con testi immagini e interviste di Marcello Lorrai e Alessandro Achilli.
