Il Concerto del Mattino di Rai Radio3 trasmette domani, poco dopo mezzogiorno, uno dei lavori più recenti di Mike e Kate Westbrook, The Serpent Hit, registrato dalla BBC la sera della sua prima esecuzione al Kings Place londinese il 2 aprile dello scorso anno. Della magnifica sede di Hannah's at Seale-Hayne presso Newton Abbot, nel Devon, hanno fatto da tempo quasi una loro seconda casa dove tenere incontri, seminari, prove, concerti e allestimenti musicali di varia natura: questo fine settimana Kate e Mike Westbrook convocano il pubblico al cospetto della ritrovata Big Band - venti elementi - per due speciali appuntamenti nel segno di Duke Ellington: Two For The Duke!

John Fordham traccia un ritratto di Tony Marsh per il quotidiano britannico The Guardian, mentre dalle pagine dello Smith's Academy Informer Mike Westbrook ne ricorda l'amicizia e la vicinanza negli anni della Brass Band e dell'Orchestra, proponendo un filmato di On Duke's Birthday - l'estratto è dal concerto di debutto ad Amiens, il 12 maggio 1984 - dove oltre al batterista è in evidenza anche il trombonista Danilo Terenzi, morto nel 1995. "In 1982 Tony joined the Brass Band and on our many travels across Europe, through France, Italy and elsewhere, Danilo was often with us.This group was the nucleus of the band that premiered On Duke’s Birthday at Amiens in May 1984. Words can’t express the depth of such friendships and musical relationships, but the music says it all. Thankfully, the artistry and love in that remarkable band is captured on the live recording of the very first performance. A case of what Duke describes as ‘Doing the right thing, with the right people, in the right place at the right time’. Tony was at the heart of so much of our work. His contribution to London Bridge was immense. Whether in an orchestral setting, or in an improvising group like Full Monte, to say nothing of his innumerable collaborations on the London scene, Tony always had his own angle, a fresh and original approach. His honesty and commitment were total. Playing with him was a joy. We miss him."
Westbrook ricorda anche un altro musicista scomparso di recente, il pianista Pete Saberton, impegnato con l'Orchestra nelle registrazioni di The Orchestra of Smith’s Academy e in molti concerti degli anni novanta.

Keith Tippett has been one of the UK's most inventive solo improvisers and composers since the 1970s, and this continuous-performance suite, From Granite to Wind, is a fine representation of those skills. It's a framework for the impressionistic poetry of his vocalist wife, Julie Tippetts, and the sax-playing of four fine soloists including long-time associate Paul Dunmall. Other members of the Octet are all west country sax players largely unknown to London audiences, including Ben Waghorn (tenor) and Kevin Figes alongside James Gardiner-Bateman (altos). The Rolls Royce rhythm section comprises Peter Fairclough (drums/perc) and Thad Kelly (bass).

Planet Gong annuncia la pubblicazione da parte della spagnola Wah Wah Records Supersonic Sounds di alcune rare registrazioni collegate al periodo del sessantotto parigino di Daevid Allen e Gilli Smyth: Dreaming The Magic of Your Maya, con Loren Standlee e Ziska Baum (qui 'Princess Flower and the Moon Rays'), appena prima della nascita dei Gong.

Recorded in 1968 and issued as a very limited private pressing (less than 100 copies meant you didn't have to pay 'stamp duty' on the pressing) this psychedelic raga freak-out is the brainchild of multi disciplinary artist Loren Standlee plus his partner Ziska with the cooperation of Daevid Allen and Gilli Smyth in what was the first incarnation of Gong. Loren and Ziska had been involved with the crowd of avantgardist free thinkers that settled in Formentera in the sixties, and back home in N.Y. they had also been connected to experimentalists such as Angus Maclise, Marian Zazeela, Tony Conrad, Henry Flynt, Pandit Pran Nath, and others.

Nel florilegio di iniziative collegate al Records Store Day - quest'anno alla sua quinta edizione - c'è anche la pubblicazione, in vinile e in tiratura ovviamente limitata, di un doppio singolo di Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band relativo all'epoca delle 'leggendarie' sedute di registrazione per la A&M Records nel 1966, già oggetto di attenzione in precedenti edizioni. A questa provvede oggi Sundazed, recuperando i master mono originali: Diddy Wah Diddy, Who Do You Think You’re Fooling, MoonchildFrying Pan.

Upon signing with A&M Records, Captain Beefheart & his Magic Band debuted loudly, recording two singles in 1966, cementing their image as Sunset Strip “blues fiends” and paving the way for what was to become one of the most original careers in rock history. The band’s cover of Bo Diddley’s “Diddy Wah Diddy” garnered significant regional attention and considerable radio play courtesy of the Captain’s unreal howl & Jerry Handley’s deep, thundering bass sound, while the driving delta tributes “Who Do You Think You’re Fooling” and “Frying Pan” sharply displayed the Captain’s early songwriting prowess. While the Magic Band’s musical course were soon to evolve in drastic & original ways, it’s these early sides that depict a developed blues foundation and a signature tightness that was threaded through all Magic Bands to come. Sundazed now proudly presents these legendary recordings in double 7” 45rpm gatefold edition, all sides cut from the original A&M mono masters.

Si può rivedere, in qualità piuttosto buona, il concerto che Van Dyke Parks ha tenuto al John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts di Washington pochi giorni fa, il 9 aprile, evento trasmesso in diretta sul web e ora conservato in http://www.kennedy-center.org/explorer/videos/?id=M4993. Con il pianista e cantante, in splendida forma alla vigilia dei settant'anni, c'erano Jim Cooper (basso) e Don Heffington (batteria). Nuovo lutto per il jazz britannico per la scomparsa del batterista Tony Marsh, colpito da malattia nel pieno di un periodo assai ricco di concerti e iniziative. Aveva suonato poche sere fa a Londra al Cafe Oto in trio con Roscoe Mitchell e John Edwards, mentre tra pochi giorni avrebbe partecipato in duo con Mark Sanders alla nuova edizione del festival londinese Freedom of a City. Tony Marsh first came to prominence in the Seventies with the jazz-rock group Major Surgery. Developing its compositions from group improvisations, it became a major innovator in this area of jazz. The break up of Major Surgery in 1979 saw Tony teaching percussion and playing cabaret gigs in Londons Soho. The Eighties were a productive period, providing many opportunities for recording and tours with Mike Osborne, John Surman, Evan Parker, Paul Rutherford, Barry Guy, Howard Riley, Elton Dean, Yves Robert and Didier Levallet. A trio with Simon Picard and Paul Rogers grew into the Mingus inspired band 7RPM. Tony joined the Mike Westbrook Brass Band in 1982, recording On Duke's Birthday (featuring Dominique Pifarely) in 1983 and combining with Le Sinfonietta de Picardie in 1988 to record London Bridge is Broken Down. A long association with Harry Beckett in his Quartet and Flugelhorn Band has produced several records and a trio CD with Didier Levallet. Another long term association is with the improvising quartet Full Monte, with Chris Biscoe (saxes), Brian Godding (guitar and guitar synth) and Marcio Mattos (bass), with whom he has toured extensively and released two CDs.

Featuring Hopper classics and obscurities, as well as something from one of his favourite albums, covers of his compositions (even a hiphop beat!), numerous collaborations, an exploration of his involvement in the genesis of tape looping in the early 60's, interview clips, a rare chance to hear Hugh singing (!) and the current sounds being made with his famous Fender Jazz bass (still resident in the Canterbury area)".

Tra le opere presentate nel corso di American Mavericks - un fitto programma di eventi e concerti organizzati a marzo 2012 da Michael Tilson Thomas e la San Francisco Symphony in varie sedi a New York, Ann Arbor, Chicago e San Francisco dedicato ai compositori più originali e innovatori nell'America del ventesimo secolo, tra cui Partch, Cage, Reich, Varèse e Riley - c'era anche il nuovo lavoro di Meredith Monk Realm Variations. Lo presenta brevemente l'autrice stessa su YouTube. Una conversazione con alcuni dei protagonisti del festival, condotta in anteprima da David Garland e Nadia Sirota lo scorso dicembre, si ritrova negli archivi della newyorkese WQXR.

La scomparsa pochi giorni fa del pianista di Sheffield Pete Saberton - di cui si svolgono oggi i funerali - è ricordata ai siti della Royal Academy of Music, di Birmingham Jazz e di LondonJazz, dove tra note e commenti fa giungere il suo saluto anche Mike Westbrook: "Pete Saberton will be mourned by all his fellow musicians. I'd like to add my own tribute to an exceptionally fine, creative and sympathetic musician. Kate and I had the pleasure of working with him in my Orchestra in the early '90s. I owe him a great deal for his playing , during that period of big musical challenges that included our festival in Catania and the recording of the Orchestra of Smith's Academy album at Crawley. I shall always be profoundly grateful for Pete's contribution, notably his masterly handling of the demanding piano part in Measure for Measure and his exquisite and moving introduction to So We'll Go No More A' Roving. Rest in Peace."

Radiotre Suite Jazz presenta domani sera il progetto di Elliott Sharp dedicato a Willie Dixon, Electric Willie, in un concerto tenuto al festival di Saalfelden (Austria) l'agosto scorso. Con Sharp c'erano Eric Mingus, Tracie Morris, Melvin Gibbs, Don McKenzie e per l'occasione anche Henry Kaiser. Del concerto esiste una ripresa video pubblicata pressoché integralmente su YouTube. Il programma offre inoltre una registrazione del Wayne Horvitz New Quartet - Horvitz, Briggan Krauss, Tony Malaby e Ches Smith - effettuata al club newyorkese Poisson Rouge lo scorso settembre.

Elliott Sharp’s Terraplane has dedicated this project entirely to the blues of Willie Dixon. But it’s more than an homage: Sharp and his musicians incessantly transcend the boundaries of the genre with jazz-influenced improvisations. Terraplane shows how you can play with standard formulas, deconstruct them, and charge them with a finesse and refinement that lends new vitality to a seemingly historic (and hence perpetually valid) form. It’s a kind of latter day industrial blues, urban, of course, and full of unexpected breaks. If you think everything has already been said in this genre, enjoy the chance to be proven wrong.

Dopo l'attenzione rivolta alla svizzera Intakt, al club newyorkese The Stone è ora il turno dell'etichetta fondata da Andrea Centazzo: ventiquattro concerti a partire da oggi, fino al 14 aprile 2012, festeggiano il trentacinquesimo anniversario della Ictus Records. "Created in 1976, Ictus has been one of the first and most celebrated labels completely dedicated to improvised music, new jazz and contemporary classic music. Founded by Andrea Centazzo and Carla Lugli became known as “the creative label for creative music”. Closed down in 1984, Ictus was reborn in 2005 in Long Beach CA and immediately regained attention from audiences and critics for its catalog featuring new productions and re-releases of the old recordings. A rich archive dating 1976-1990 is a treasure still to be explored. With a series of concerts celebrating its 35th anniversary, Ictus is bringing to New York, for the first time ever, some of the best seminal Italian improvisers already part of the Ictus catalogue plus new talents, presenting exciting combinations with some of the top US performers. Tributes to improvisation masters Steve Lacy and Derek Bailey plus a tribute to the underappreciated great composer Colin McPhee will complete the 12 nights / 24 concerts celebration.
