Così dice di sé David Minnick: "I am the artist behind the 180Gs, The Sursiks, Oven Mitt Johnson and Tritone. I was the guitarist and one of the primary songwriters for the Detroit ska band Gangster Fun from 1986-2000 (and a few reunion shows after 2000). I make my living as a church music director and teacher but I also create production music, write arrangements for other composers/bands and produce albums for other artists (including Judge Smith, Iggy and the Stooges, ICP, Marina Arsenijevic and George Clinton). The musical projects that I come up with on my own are large and conceptual and seemingly impossible. Nobody believes me when I tell them what I am working on. Due to the nature of these projects, it isn't possible for me to release a song a week as is the usual method these days. I am hoping that, with the help of some people who are excited by the projects I create, I can begin to say "no" to some of the projects that offer money but little artistic fulfillment. This would allow me to spend more time on the projects I dearly love: the gigantic, complicated, strange ones whose very existence is enigmatic."

L'attore e regista francese Mathieu Amalric seguirà nuovamente John Zorn nei concerti europei in programma in questi giorni, anche in Italia, per filmare e raccogliere materiali per il quarto capitolo a lui interamente dedicato, atteso a Vienna l'anno prossimo. Intanto i primi tre stanno per essere proiettati per la prima volta insieme - quasi una maratona di oltre tre ore - in occasione degli appuntamenti in Francia: Zorn I (2010-2016), Zorn II (2016-2018) e Zorn III (2018-2022).

Depuis 2010, Mathieu Amalric filme seul, avec sa caméra et ses micros, le musicien new-yorkais John Zorn. Saxophoniste, compositeur, improvisateur, explorateur indéfinissable, du jazz au quatuor à cordes, du noise au klezmer, de l’easy listening à l’orgue d’église, cartoon, oud électrique, soprano d’opéra ou chœur de femmes, Zorn nous embarque dans un voyage musical sans fin... (un Zorn IV est en route). Trois films, aux prismes volontairement différents, avec leurs constellations de musiciens, d’amitiés, de travail et d’énergies sonores. Un omaggio musicale a The Fall of America - celebre raccolta di poesie di Allen Ginsberg tra le più visionarie e politiche del periodo 1965-1971, segnato dalle lotte per i diritti civili e dagli orrori della guerra in Vietnam, dalla Convention di Chicago, lo sbarco sulla Luna, la morte di Che Guevara e di Neil Cassady - era già stato prodotto un paio d'anni fa in occasione dei cinquant'anni dalla prima pubblicazione per City Lights Books. L'anno scorso infiammò la platea del nuovissimo Teatro Civico di Rho (Mi) con le splendide interpretazioni delle musiche di Jonathan Coe, ora lì fa ritorno con un personale omaggio al più celebre lavoro di Mike Oldfield, Tubular Bells, nell'anno del suo cinquantesimo anniversario: sabato 28 ottobre, con inizio alle ore 21.00, la magnifica Artchipel Orchestra diretta da Ferdinando Faraò.

"L’idea di avvicinarmi e confrontarmi con la musica di Mike Oldfield - spiega Ferdinando - risale ad alcuni anni fa. Considero Tubular Bells un’opera iconica, che mi colpì moltissimo fin da ragazzo. Nel 2017 ho arrangiato per orchestra la prima parte del disco, riferendomi ai temi principali e alternandoli a momenti di improvvisazione sulle strutture tematiche, ma anche su strutture libere. I “ferimenti” tematici e strutturali hanno un ruolo fondamentale in questa mia personale visione dell’opera che, a distanza di alcuni anni, ho voluto ridefinire e contestualizzare in un’ottica di libera rilettura, caratterizzata da continue variazioni. Non per nulla abbiamo intitolato il concerto di Rho Tubular Bells Variations. Inoltre, nella seconda parte della nostra esibizione ci sarà spazio per la prima esecuzione della suite Tube, che ho scritto per l’occasione, ispirata al capolavoro di Oldfield".

Ha toccato anche Londra il lungo programma di concerti ed eventi vari che per un anno intero intende sottolineare e festeggiare i cinquant'anni di attività del Kronos Quartet: del concerto di ieri al Barbican già circola sul web una ripresa audio integrale - con brani tra gli altri di Reich, Glass, Riley, Schnittke e Crumb - mentre un paio di estratti video sono su YT. Ne scrive Richard Williams al suo blog The Blue Moment, ricordando la sua 'prima volta' nel 1988: "The Kronos Quartet were already well into their second decade when I saw them for the first time, sharing the bill with John Zorn’s Naked City at the Royalty Theatre in London in November 1988. They closed their set with Aarvo Pärt’s “Fratres”, whose hushed, prayer-like cadences were what stuck in my head, and are still there. Al Dølajazz di Lillehammer (Norvegia) torna in scena questo pomeriggio la versione dei materiali di Glad Day curata dal sassofonista Knut Laasbye per il suo William Blake/Mike Westbrook Ensemble: "Den engelske jazzpianisten/komponisten Mike Westbrooks (1936-) musikk byr på en engasjerende og utfordrende reise inn i William Blakes (1757-1827) London på slutten av 1700-tallet. Livet er brutalt. Byen tilhører overklassen, dommerne og kirken. Naturvitenskapene våkner. Industrialiseringen og flukten fra landsbygda tiltar. Kontrastene legger grunnlaget for William Blakes filosofiske verden, tekster og kunst, religions- og samfunnskritikk og hans forståelse av motsetningene i menneskets tilværelse. Musikken er kompleks og melodiøs og har paralleller til den mange kjenner fra ”Les Miserables”, Gil Evans, Eisler/Weill, Ketil Bjørnstad og Tom Waits."

Un pochino a che fare con i Gong - ma solo nella scelta del nome - ebbe anche la formazione che vide protagonisti tra l'estate e l'autunno del 1990 Richard Sinclair e Hugh Hopper assieme a Mark Hewins, Vince Clarke e Andy Ward: Going Going. Un loro concerto londinese dell'ottobre di quell'anno, a Brixton, è ora su Bandcamp.

1990 was a very busy year for Sinclair: Hatfield and the North reformed (with Sophia Domancich replacing Dave Stewart) for a one-off TV show on the private Central Television channel; Caravan did the same (with Jimmy Hastings now augmenting the quartet on a permanent basis), although they remained together for subsequent series of gigs. And Sinclair reunited with Hugh Hopper in the shortlived Going Going, which also featured Mark Hewins on guitar-synthesizer, Andy Ward on drums and Vince Clark on percussion. The live repertoire of this band included Sinclair's songs from the then unreleased Hopper-Sinclair album, Caravan classics, an original Hewins instrumental ("Led It Lay") and covers of two Soft Machine classics, "Hope For Happiness" and "We Did It Again." Going Going was the precursor to Caravan Of Dreams, which consisted of Richard Sinclair on vocals and bass, Mark Hewins on guitar and Andy Ward on drums.

A metà luglio 1973 i Magnifici Quattro - Hatfield and the North - tennero i loro primi concerti in Francia suonando tra La Rochelle, La Roche-sur-Yon e Roanne per poi trattenersi un'altra settimana presso Sens a casa dei Gong, intanto che i titolari erano in Tunisia al Tabarka Festival. A Londra li attendeva di lì a poco una sessione radiofonica per la BBC, trasmessa da John Peel in Top Gear il 31 luglio, della quale solo una minima parte è venuta alla luce in anni di molto successivi (For Robert, in Hatwise Choice). Dopo varie vicende, dimenticanze, passaggi di mano (anche di padre in figlio) e recenti migliorie ora, a distanza di cinquant'anni, la registrazione è conservata come BBC Lost Session (remastered) negli archivi che Richard Sinclair sta da qualche tempo rendendo pubblici attraverso Bandcamp. In quell'occasione il suo cantato in Big Jobs fu: "Now through the medium of Radio One / We would like to dedicate this song to all our mums / Thank you for having us when we were small / If you hadn't cared for us we wouldn't be here at all / To sing and entertain / Plug us in and turn on the mains / We have to leave here by nine / I hope that we finish on time / Trying hard to make it sound nice / For all of our friends who put us up / In the largest songs / God bless to all of the Gongs".

Due speciali concerti parigini alla Salle Pleyel lo scorso weekend, ciascuno con due diverse letture del celebre brano, prima acustica (per sette voci e due pianoforti) e poi elettrica (con la formazione attuale completa, rinforzata da cinque strumentisti a fiato), e la contemporanea pubblicazione dell'atteso cofanetto antologico con sette album in vinile e otto diverse versioni prodotte nel corso del tempo: Christian Vander festeggia con i Magma i cinquant'anni di Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh, consegnandolo al pubblico e alla storia con l'augurio dell'immortalità ("On vous souhaite de belles musiques à l’infini!"). Nientemeno!

Commenta Eric Debarnot, più sobriamente, su Benzine :"L’infini, c’est sans doute un peu trop ambitieux, mais cinquante de vie encore, pourquoi pas? Après tout, même si l’interprétation en 2023 de Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh n’a plus la grandeur épique et la force de la version originale, il est difficile de ne pas être heureux pour Christian et Stella de cette reconnaissance de la part d’un public de mélomanes (même si, finalement, ce serait presque dadaïste, ces chants en kobaïen que des centaines de personnes bien mises et bien éduquées – et d’un âge certain – écoutent le plus sérieusement du monde…!). Quant à nous, nous ne savons pas s’il nous faut réellement espérer que les Kobaïens débarquent de leurs soucoupes pour nous sauver de cette planète que nous avons dévastée, mais, au cas où, nous avons appris pour les saluer les premières phrases de Mekanïk Destruktïw Kommandöh: «Hür! Dëh antzïk Köhntarkösz Kreuhn Köhrmahn / Stöht ẁurdah Melekaahm / Uz, dëh ᴧërkbaahn Kreuhn Köhrmahn / Zëbëhn Straïn dë Ğeuštaah ẁortsiš». Aucune idée de ce que ça veut dire, mais on espère qu’ils seront flattés que nous parlions leur langue!"

Nuovo album super-chitarristico di Eugene Chadbourne, figlio in parte della magnifica serie giornaliera Head of Books: I Looked Like a Hippy, in 3 cd su Weird Cry Records.

Ne parla lo stesso Chadbourne in una recente intervista con Dominic Ivron per International Times: "Head of Books began during covid, I had no idea how long it would go on and was used to having much of my musical creative output tied into touring and associated recording projects. The Small Business Administration helped me stay afloat and gave me money to invest in my business. The challenge was how to continue to create prolifically and what to do with it? There was an initial burst of buying sprees as people stuck in their houses began listening to the box sets they bought years ago and thought about what other material they might want. But obviously that could not continue any longer. I wondered about what it would be like to have a subscription series but went for something that would be done every day: I was interested in building up an inventory of solos that would also be used as individual parts of a guitar orchestra. The first results of that process is a three CD set of guitar orchestrations entitled I Looked Like a Hippie. It was important that the series not cost money to produce as I was unsure how much would come in as contributions from subscribers. So basically the expense is $12 a monthly for a WeTransfer pro account which also gets used for all kinds of things. One very regular Italian subscriber more than pays for this and in the beginning I got some very large contributions, not so much these days but I never know when someone just decides to put money in my mailbox, that is nice."

Chi già conosce la straordinaria verve creativa di Brian Woodbury poco si stupisce nel sapere dell'ultima impresa in cui si è cacciato - realizzare un video per ciascuno degli 88 brani che compongono la quadrupla raccolta Anthems & Antithets - e che ora tenta disperatamente di portare a termine. Per metà i video sono già pronti, compreso il più ambizioso di tutti, Theseus Rex, che vedrà la luce anche come romanzo grafico a sé stante; per gli altri 47 il Nostro si è dato tempo ancora un anno. Ma ha bisogno di aiuto: "During the depths of the pandemic I pushed myself to create an avalanche of music – 88 songs for a 4-volume recording called Anthems & Antithets. La Ghost Train Orchestra di Brian Carpenter e il Kronos Quartet si associano per reinterpretare le musiche di Louis Hardin (1916-1999), cioè Moondog, il cosiddetto Vichingo della 6ª Avenue a New York che lì stazionò come artista e musicista di strada per quasi trent'anni prima di trasferirsi in Germania, verso la metà degli anni Settanta. E se non bastasse invitano a unirsi a loro Sam Amidon, Jarvis Cocker, Petra Haden, Karen Mantler, Marissa Nadler, Aoife O'Donovan, Rufus Wainwright e Joan Wasser. In ricordo di Hal Willner, che certamente avrebbe voluto metterci del suo: Songs and Symphoniques: The Music of Moondog.

When Moondog died in 1999 at 83, he left an archive filled with hundreds of compositions, many of which have yet to be transcribed or recorded. The range of the material in that archive, located in Münster, Germany, is broad and varied enough to embrace many kinds of music. “I always say that Moondog was a composer’s composer,” Carpenter said. “He wrote for string ensembles, percussion ensembles, solo percussionists, choirs, reeds, brass, but he also wrote pop songs with lyrics and jazz pieces. His work seems endless.”

A cura dell'In Situ Art Society a Bonn (Germania) tornano a riunirsi con il titolo Last Dream of the Morning tre massimi campioni dell'improvvisazione, protagonisti di innumerevoli vicende nonché amici di lunga data: John Butcher, John Edwards e Mark Sanders. Il concerto si svolge negli spazi artistici e culturali della Kreuzung an St. Helena e viene trasmesso in live streaming a partire dalle ore 20.00. Terry Day ha proposto molte volte le sue poesie in contesto musicale - spesso con la London Improvisers Orchestra - ma l'appuntamento di stasera al Cafe Oto londinese, dove la sua nuova raccolta Love, Sex & War verrà presentata in via ufficiale, assumerà tempi e modi per lui stesso inusuali. Dice: "To attempt the performance of eight lyrics plus conducting is a step into the unknown for me. Usually, I only perform one lyric with a large orchestra. Generally, the orchestra is given only the chorus of the lyric to briefly rehearse. The rest of the lyric is then improvised, with the orchestra usually hearing it for the first time during the performance. However, the orchestra is only given the title of a lyric with no defined chorus. As such that piece would be almost completely improvised. But this time each word, sentence, phrase and verse of the lyric has been deliberated upon and remains unaltered other than very minor changes. However, the structure, delivery, rhythm, tempo – all the musical aspects of the lyric are subject to improvisation, as is the dialogue and exchange between the orchestra and myself". La ricorrenza del cinquantenario della Ogun e della Cadillac - etichette discografiche fondamentali nel documentare e sostenere l'evoluzione del free-jazz britannico al tempo delle fratellanze sudafricane e in alternativa alle major - è stata accolta giovedì scorso a Londra al Cafe Oto da un festoso e folto pubblico di appassionati, cui si sono uniti personaggi e testimoni dell'epoca, musicisti e giornalisti, amici e famigliari tra cui Hazel Miller, la signora Moholo, Val Wilmer, Mike Gavin, Evan Parker, Steve Beresford, Jim Dvorak, Harrison Smith e Marcio Mattos. L'atmosfera dentro e fuori al club era pervasa di eccitazione e curiosità, con numerosi materiali discografici e iconografici originali in bella mostra, e tra questi una serie di poster da autentica collezione storica. A scaldare ancor più gli animi nella prima parte della serata è stata la proiezione - finora rarissima - del film sui Blue Notes The Real McGregor, girato da Ian Hutchison al Ronnie Scott’s Old Place nel 1967 e presentato con motivato orgoglio dal curatore del suo restauro, Paul D.J. Moody. Mike Westbrook, fondatore della Cadillac assieme a John Jack, ha dedicato a lui un breve set, struggente e raffinato, in coppia con l'affiatato Chris Biscoe, mentre l'esuberante omaggio a Louis Moholo-Moholo allestito da Alexander Hawkins ha avuto tra i protagonisti - con qualche differenza rispetto a quanto annunciato alla vigilia - Ntshuks Bonga, Jason Yarde, Roberto Ottaviano, Claude Deppa, Neil Charles e Steve Noble.

Patrick Hadfield (LondonJazz News) e Richard Williams (The Blue Moment) raccontano dello splendido debutto in concerto pochi giorni fa della Band of Bands, il progetto di Mike Westbrook ideato per celebrare i quarant'anni del Trio in forma di settetto superstar: Mike e Kate Westbrook con Chris Biscoe, Pete Whyman, Karen Street, Marcus Vergette e Coach York. 

"Westbrook, who is 87, formed his first band in Plymouth in 1958, and the Band of Bands celebrates longevity", scrive Williams. "Mike and Kate have been working, writing and performing together for 50 years. Biscoe first joined them 40 years ago, to create the Westbrook Trio. Street and Whyman have been with them on various projects for 30 years. Vergette and York, the newcomers, were called to the colours a mere 20 years ago, and are now the heartbeat of the Uncommon Orchestra." 

E Hadfield: "Many of the pieces played were songs, highlighting Kate Westbrook’s words and voice. On South of Toulouse, she growled and whistled whilst the band conjured the sounds of Camargue. My Lover's Coat, like What I Like from the suite Fine 'n Yellow, was heartbreakingly moving, as she described the grief of losing a loved one. There were songs too from the Westbrook’s Art Wolf project, Unsigned Panorama and Art Wolf Sketches, as well as In meinem Puppenhaus, which described the artistic process. The tour de force was Gas Dust Stone, most memorably featured on A Bigger Show. Despite the Band of Bands’ small size relative to the Westbrooks’ big big band The Uncommon Orchestra, their sound seemed to expand to fill the size of the music. It was a tremendous couple of hours. Even those pieces written to commemorate the dead were full of life, music from hard times suffused with joy and vitality. The audience who seemed to have gathered from across the country applauded rapturously."

Non è la prima volta che torna al centro dell'attenzione, né probabilmente l'ultima, ma l'occasione ora è da cifra tonda e la coglie la tedesca Week-end producendone una nuova edizione: compie cinquant'anni Sort Of, l'album del debutto di Slapp Happy. E ne siamo tutti - compresi loro, i Magnifici Tre - felicissimi.

In 1972, left-wing intellectual film critic Uwe Nettelbeck suggested to Anthony Moore that he might write some straight songs (relatively speaking), which in turn prompted Moore to invite his old schoolfriend Peter Blegvad over to Hamburg to form the band Slapp Happy. Dagmar Krause, a young singer from Hamburg and Moore's girlfriend, joined them both on their trip to Wümme to record what was to become this album, Sort Of, using Faust as their rhythm section. In honour of this album´s 50th anniversary the album gets a nicely remastered reissue with the newly founded Week-End Records, the festival's inhouse label who managed to get the band together for their final reunion shows in November of 2016 and Spring of 2017.
