Assente da un po' dalle scene - ma mai troppo lontano dallo sguardo del pubblico, grazie ai contributi video regolarmente pubblicati al canale YT della Cuneiform Records - Henry Kaiser propone un nuovo album tutto chitarristico registrato dal vivo in studio, privo di sovraincisioni e ripensamenti ma pieno zeppo di dediche, invocazioni, ringraziamenti e omaggi ad amici e colleghi musicisti, poeti, attivisti e ambientalisti, tra i quali Liz Sutter, Bija Sass, Paul Plimley, Steffan Basho-Junghans, Michael Rothenberg e David Lindley: Mahalo Nui.

"More than 45 years ago I was one of the earliest adopters of studio rack effects to radically expand my guitars’ expressive capabilities. One inspiration behind this methodology was my love for solo improvisers who sounded like more than a single musician when performing live. Terry Riley, Evan Parker, Cecil Taylor and Derek Bailey were early masters of this. Equally inspiring were my personal heroes of the post-WWII classical composers: Gyorgi Ligeti, Conlon Nancarrow, Iannis Xenakis, Toru Takemitsu, Karlheinz Stockhausen, and Giacinto Scelsi. Today in 2023, I am still inspired to use digital time-domain and pitch effects to make my guitars sound like things from beyond what guitar has been before. Many of the tracks on this CD (all of them recorded live and without overdubbing) exemplify the multiplicities of this approach to solo guitar. E scalpore lo sollevava fin dal titolo lo zappiano Over-Nite Sensation, oggi giunto anch'esso al traguardo dei cinquant'anni e al quale spetterà presto il trattamento da box antologico con multipli cd e Blu-ray (o doppio vinile con poster in omaggio) e relativa messe di versioni audio alternative e restaurate, inediti, provini, scarti, rarità iconografiche, note d'epoca ed ex post. Sul suo status leggendario si osserva: "Not only did Over-Nite Sensation signal a change in musical direction for The Mothers at large, but Frank Zappa handled the bulk of the lead vocal duties and staked his claim as the album’s only guitarist. It was a new band with a new sound that resonated widely, eventually going gold in 1976. Over the ensuing years, almost every song on Over-Nite Sensation became indelible live staples and longstanding fan favorites, with “I’m The Slime,” “Fifty-Fifty,” “Zomby Woof,” and “Camarillo Brillo” immediately making their respective presences known in the setlist. Gran stupore al suo apparire nel 1973 lo suscitò certamente Larks' Tongues in Aspic, punto di svolta del processo storico e dell'evoluzione dei King Crimson su cui val sempre la pena tornare, anche a prescindere da ricorrenze e anniversari (in questo caso, il cinquantesimo). Il percorso che ne ha preceduto e accompagnato la realizzazione è già stato ampiamente documentato dai box antologici dedicati a quella formazione - Fripp, Cross, Wetton, Bruford e brevemente, in modo però indimenticabile, Muir - e a quei suoi formidabili anni, dall'estate del 1972 fino a quella del 1974. Tuttavia ancora molto delle sedute di registrazione dell'album era rimasto inedito, e le possibilità audio oggi offerte dalla tecnologia Dolby Atmos sembrano poter giustificare una rilettura dei materiali originali anche a soli dieci anni dalla precedente: ecco dunque in due cd e due Blu-ray Larks’ Tongues In Aspic (The Complete Recording Sessions).

Compiono quarant'anni le riprese del regista Jonathan Demme per il celebre Stop Making Sense, realizzate sulla scena del Pantages Theatre di Hollywood nel dicembre 1983 con l'intento di ricreare in modo sensazionale un concerto dal vivo dei Talking Heads, allora al culmine del tour di Speaking in Tongues. Il film, in una nuova versione restaurata in digitale da A24, è atteso tra pochi giorni in anteprima al Toronto International Film Festival cui hanno promesso di partecipare i quattro componenti del gruppo - riuniti in via eccezionale a conversare con Spike Lee - e successivamente in sale cinematografiche e teatri ovunque secondo un fitto calendario di proiezioni. Per l'ascolto casalingo, intanto, Rhino ne ha pronta un'edizione in doppio vinile con copia del libretto originale e l'aggiunta di un paio di inediti.

Negli stessi giorni in cui è prevista la ripubblicazione in versione estesa in cd e Blu-ray di uno degli album più belli - ma meno fortunati - degli XTC, The Big Express (1984), Andy Partridge dà alle stampe Popartery, un prezioso volume che raccoglie una cinquantina di suoi acquerelli realizzati per accompagnare e illustrare brani tratti dal repertorio storico del gruppo. Lo distribuisce Burning Shed, in tiratura limitata.

“The Big Express is the closest we ever came to recording a 'concept' album. It’s full of Swindon and deep seams of life there, that run through myself, Colin, and Dave, (Terry too of course). Just as music gets under your skin, art can leave a lasting impression. As for arteries, there’s that connection to the heart, the indelible imprint that a great tune, a keenly observed lyric, a striking image all share. The front cover image of Popartery sums it up appropriately. It’s one of a series of 56 watercolours that Andy Partridge painted as the individual centerpieces of dustjackets for an extremely limited run of hardcover books some years back. With the exception of a couple posted on the internet, the original paintings were only seen by the recipients. Fortunately, Andy had each of them scanned and preserved by his longtime art associate Andrew Swainson. Andrew had redrawn three of the paintings for a limited series of prints but the idea of bringing all of them together became a frequent point of discussion until the idea of a book featuring the complete set emerged. Each of the 56 paintings is also accompanied by a note from Andy discussing, variously, the origins of the songs, the visual imagery used and other pointers of interest.

L'intensa serie di concerti della scorsa primavera ha consentito a Billie Bottle e al suo gaio quintetto Temple of Shibboleth di portare in scena integralmente il repertorio del loro bell'album di esordio, l'omonimo Temple of Shibboleth, all'epoca freschissimo di stampa. Da una di quelle date, quella del 28 aprile a Bradford on Avon, proviene The Mending Tour, disponibile in digitale tramite Bandcamp o, volendo, in un doppio cd che include anche l'album di studio, circolato finora soltanto in vinile: in questo, che negli ultimi tempi è divenuto il suo principale progetto, l'intraprendente Billie Bottle è con Viv Goodwin-Darke, Roz Harding, Anna Batson e Emma Holbrook.

Nell'album Conspiracy Theories, del 2007, il brano Flashpoint era eseguito in sestetto con In Cahoots, ma è sempre esistito anche in versione per chitarra e basso soltanto: Phil Miller lo propose spesso dal vivo in duo con Fred T Baker, che ora ne illustra tutti i dettagli - e ne esegue entrambe le parti - al Phil Miller-The Legacy nella sezione didattica Master Classes (e successivamente in Opus, assai utile per un confronto tra le diverse versioni dei brani via via presentati).

Prosegue nel numero 36 della sua magnifica serie Probes per la Radio Web del Museo di Arte Contemporanea di Barcellona (Macba) l'indagine di Chris Cutler, al solito accuratissima e documentata, riguardante la storia e l'evoluzione tecnologica delle tastiere elettroniche nel secolo scorso, qui in particolare Ondioline, Clavioline, Musitron, Electronium e Solovox. Cutler anticipa che affronterà nuovamente il tema anche nel prossimo episodio, ricapitolando premesse e conclusioni con percorso a ritroso e parallelo; intanto offre esempi da Charles Trenet, Al Kooper, Marvelettes, Jean-Jacques Perrey, John Barry, Sun Ra con la Solar Arkestra, Beatles, Scelsi, Stockhausen, Bob Drake, This Heat e un passaggio di Telstar in versione per grande orchestra. Trasmissioni in radio a ogni ora del giorno e della notte, ininterrottamente, con programmi originali commissionati appositamente a più di duecento artisti in ogni parte del mondo e gli interventi di un incalcolabile numero di ospiti e partecipanti. Impresa difficile da concepire, e ancor più da sostenere, eppure questo fu Radio Art Zone l'anno scorso, cento giorni in streaming e in FM nel corso di tutta l'estate, dal 18 giugno al 25 settembre. A documentare quella straordinaria esperienza, oltre a un archivio permanente sul web, c'è ora un volume che ne raccoglie gli esiti e le intenzioni: lo pubblica la berlinese Hatje Cantz, curato da una delle responsabili del progetto, Sarah Washington. Tra i molti contributi scritti ci sono quelli di Ed Baxter, Caroline Kraabel, Felix Kubin, Liquid Penguin Ensemble, Heidi Neilson, Ralf Schreiber, Nichola Scrutton, Sisters Akousmatica e Daniel R. Wilson.

This book explores the central themes and techniques of artist-made radio, emerging from over 20 years of practice by a multitude of artists in the field. It brings to the page excerpts of long-form radio works from the world’s largest exhibition of radio art, Radio Art Zone, a joint project by the artist duo Mobile Radio (Sarah Washington & Knut Aufermann) and the Luxembourg community station Radio ARA, which was broadcast for 100 days as part of the programme of the European Capital of Culture Esch2022. It was transmitted in the south of Luxembourg on 87.8 FM as well as streamed online, and relayed by a network of international partner radios, for a worldwide audience of more than 250,000 listeners. The Radio Art Zone schedule consisted of two daily programmes: newly-commissioned 22-hour radio productions created by more than 200 international and local artists, and 2-hour live shows from kitchens in the community. Additionally Radio Art Zone offered artist residencies, workshops, youth productions and interventions in public space, opening up participatory opportunities for residents and visitors to the Capital of Culture region.

Interspersed with newly commissioned works ranging from micro-essays and texts on radio form, practice and poetics, to radio plays and illustrations, the book is full of unique images which allow the imagination to expand outward into radio space. Radio Art Zone performs an exquisite transformation from airwaves to paper, providing a treasury of ideas and reflections about radio as art.

EDITIONS - Volume Five - COMMENTARY (260 pages) includes engraved scores for the "sort-of" opera The School of Understanding (1996 / ECM 1648/49), and the song cycle Comment c'est (2016 / ECM 2537).

Austrian trumpeter and composer Michael Mantler celebrated his 80th birthday on August 10. Born in Vienna, he studied trumpet and musicology at the Academy of Music and Vienna University. In 1962 he moved to the USA to continue his studies at the Berklee School and two years later started playing trumpet with Cecil Taylor, among others. In 1973, he launched WATT Works, a record label devoted to his and Carla Bley's music. Rarely appearing live, except with the Carla Bley Band, he recorded a series of albums for the label. In 1991 he returned to live in Europe, now recording for ECM. His latest album Coda-Orchestra Suites (reinterpretations of older works for large orchestra), as well as a series of print editions (including engraved scores of selected recorded work from a 50-year period) was released in 2021. In recognition of his life's work he received several awards, including, among others, the Austrian State Prize for Improvised Music and the Music Prize of the City of Vienna. On September 26, he will receive the Austrian honorary cross for Science and Art.

Con la decisione di pubblicare ogni mese la partitura di un brano tratto dal loro immenso repertorio - però in versione per solo pianoforte e voce - Mike e Kate Westbrook danno vita a una nuova entusiasmante iniziativa: The Westbrook Songbook, progetto articolato in quattro sezioni principali (Jazz Cabaret and Music Theatre, Opera and Oratorio, Original Song Cycles, Orchestral and settings of European Poetry) che sarò reso via via accessibile ad appassionati e studiosi attraverso Bandcamp. Si comincia bene con The Streams of Lovely Lucienne, brano tra i più amati di Platterback (1998) e in questa occasione proposto all'ascolto nella versione che ne ha dato di recente la Granite Band, in Earth Felt The Wound (2020).

Hanno avuto buon esito a Londra la settimana scorsa le iniziative della London Improvisers Orchestra per festeggiare i propri venticinque anni di attività, con concerti in due luoghi affatto diversi per ambientazione e presenza di pubblico - il Cafe Oto a Dalston e la St. Mary's New Church in Stoke Newington - e in due differenti formazioni, un laboratorio di improvvisazione aperto a partecipanti esterni e un'interessante ricostruzione storica offerta da Steve Beresford a colloquio con Gerard Tierney e con i presenti. Molti e molto vari nel loro approccio i musicisti succedutisi nel ruolo di guida, con Faradena Afifi, Ashley Wales e Charlotte Hug tra i conduttori più vivaci e Douglas Benford, Sue Ferrar, Neil Metcalfe, Veryan Weston e Adam Bohman tra i protagonisti più in luce. Maggie Nicols ha proposto un'intensa meditazione collettiva sull'ascolto e sul respiro secondo indicazioni tratte dagli insegnamenti di John Stevens, Noel Taylor ha coinvolto tutti individualmente in un suggestivo brano dalla struttura quasi narrativa (Sentience), Orphy Robinson ha affidato il suo contributo a tre conduttori simultanei e per il suo il giovanissimo Julian Woods è ricorso addirittura a Barbie Girl. Sulle vicende di questo dinamico e tenace ensemble potrebbe veder presto la luce una pubblicazione ufficiale curata da Tierney, nel frattempo l'Orchestra promette di tener fede all'antica tradizione di riunirsi in città ogni prima domenica del mese, probabilmente di nuovo alla St. Mary's New Church, divenuta ormai sua sede di adozione.

E' giunta il giugno scorso al suo numero 44 la rivista periodica Les Allumés du Jazz, che in Francia rappresenta tuttora un importante raccordo tra musicisti e distribuzione discografica al di fuori dei canali commerciali più privilegiati, oltre che una valida fonte di informazione e di riflessione sulle cose di musica dentro e attorno al jazz di sperimentazione e di ricerca. Non è infrequente imbattersi in scritti, commenti e immagini di Jean Rochard, Guy Le Querrec, Jean-Marc Foussat, Simon Goubert e Denis Fournier, per esempio, e questo mese ci sono anche gli omaggi a Tony Coe, Karl Berger e Peter Brötzmann, scomparsi recentemente. For over fifty years, since he was in his early twenties, Peter Blegvad has been collecting quotations about milk, the primary substance of nutrition and of wonder. All the while his belief in the numinousness of milk has been compounded, that in its opacity and fluid density it is a thing full of both meaning and mystery. Milk - Through a Glass Darkly gathers these quotations into a mosaic, or literary collage, consisting of almost three hundred and fifty separate passages that consider “light, smell, writing, mothers, fathers, colour, nothingness, regression, gender, race, food, cattle, ectoplasm, anti-matter, the moon, sex and insanity amongst other things”. It is, in its enigmatic way, a kind of Lactatus Logico-Philosophicus…

The setlist (an epoch-spanning selection of Stewart-Gaskin songs, some never played live in the UK before) has been decided. As with last year's Kings Place performance, this is a trio gig featuring Barbara Gaskin (vocals), Dave Stewart (keyboards) and Beren Matthews (guitar), with our longstanding sound engineer Ted Hayton handling the mix.

Tickets have been selling fast as the hour approaches, so if you plan to attend but haven't yet bought a ticket, it's advisable to do so now. We're promoting this gig ourselves, which means tickets can only be bought via our online store, operated by our colleagues Burning Shed. This is a General Admission event with no support band: doors open at 7pm, the concert starts at 7.30pm and finishes around 10pm, including an intermission. There will be a bar, and a selection of our delectable merchandise can be purchased before the concert and during the intermission (but not after the show). 

We selected Kings Place after considering many other venues on the grounds that Hall One offers by far the best listening experience. This will be our last concert of 2023 and loyal listeners are flying in from all over the globe, so we hope you'll be able to join them and us for this celebration of 42 years of happy Stewart-Gaskin music-making!"

Doppia occasione a Londra nel weekend - domani sera al Cafe Oto e poi domenica da pomeriggio a sera alla St. Mary's New Church - per unirsi alla London Improvisers Orchestra a festeggiare venticinque anni di attività, con concerti, incontri, laboratori di improvvisazione, conversazioni pubbliche e ospiti molto speciali... Buon anniversario!

Since 1998, the London Improvisers Orchestra has been dedicated to the arts of conducted improvisation, or ‘Conduction’, and free improvisation. The Orchestra was formed from the ashes of the 1997 touring group of American improviser Butch Morris, the pioneering inventor of Conduction. Since its birth, the group has had hundreds of members pass through its ranks, including Evan Parker, Pat Thomas, Byron Wallen, John Edwards, Lol Coxhill, Caroline Kraabel and Mark Sanders. To this day, the group is led by founding member Steve Beresford, an icon of the UK’s improvisation movement. The Orchestra currently performs monthly, featuring a rotating cast of the finest improvisers from the UK and beyond, never failing to deliver a unique experience.

Doppio omaggio a Elton Dean e a Keith Tippett da parte del sestetto You Are Here guidato dal sassofonista Kevin Figes con la deliziosa riproposta di due classici brani dei Nostri: del primo Seven for Lee (era su Happy Daze del 1977, e costantemente nel suo repertorio dal vivo) e del secondo Green and Orange Night Park (da Dedicated To You, But You Weren't Listening e tema amatissimo in Septober Energy, entrambi del 1971). Li produce in forma di singolo in vinile l'etichetta londinese My Only Desire Records, specializzata nel recupero di rarità e inediti del jazz britannico tra gli anni Sessanta e Ottanta.

Saxophonist/composer Kevin Figes and his group You Are Here present this homage to two inspirational British jazz musicians - Keith Tippett and Elton Dean - with newly minted recordings of a classic track from each, pressed on a limited edition 7”. You Are Here grew out of a celebration of the life of the vital improvising pianist/composer Keith Tippett (1947-2020), with whom Kevin Figes recorded and performed with. Made up of the finest players on the Bristol jazz scene, the band includes irrepressible drummer Tony Orrell (Paul Dunmall), Nostalgia 77 bassist Riaan Vosloo and Get the Blessing trumpeter Pete Judge. This is the first 7” in My Only Desire Records’ Brit Jazz 45s series, which will see contemporary jazz acts record two ‘60s/’70s British jazz compositions apiece, presenting them afresh to new audiences.

Omaggio a Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) nel lavoro prodotto per il centenario della sua nascita dal quartetto ad hoc Minus X di Elliott Sharp con Brandon Lopez, Henry Kaiser e Scott Amendola. Il compositore greco, che era anche ingegnere e architetto, è da sempre una delle figure principali nel pantheon personale di Sharp: "Though weaned on Varese, Hendrix, Trane, Cecil Taylor, Sonny Sharrock, Albert Ayler, Stravinsky, Captain Beefheart, Stockhausen: the universe cracked open for me in 1968 on first hearing the music of Iannis Xenakis, a composer who had captured the glorious chaos of subatomic weather in a cloud chamber, found fibrillating grooves in burning charcoal, the majestic blues of the elliptical arc, and sonified the chaos imbuing the natural order of the universe. While most composers made music with notes, Xenakis transformed pure philosophies into sound. With his experiences as a mathematician and architect equally informing his musical approach, Xenakis manifested these connections in emotive and exciting compositions that made clear the mapping of independent processes to those in sound."
