A companion release to I Lost My Head (The Chrysalis Years 1975-1980), Memories Of Old Days provides an alternative anthology of the band's time at Chrysalis and collects curios, bootlegs, live tracks, rehearsals and demos recorded between 1975-1980. A unique insight into the band, the 5cd set starts with sessions for 1975's Free Hand and previously unreleased live recordings from the Free Hand tour. The set also includes writing sessions for the Interview album, a concert rehearsal from 1977, a complete 1978 BBC In Concert recording, and two performances from the band's final US tour in 1980, including their last ever recorded gig at the Roxy in Los Angeles. The recordings on this double LP are taken from the first night of Roscoe Mitchell's inaugural two day residency at Cafe OTO in 2012 and his first time playing with drummer Tony Marsh and double bassist John Edwards. It was one of those nights where the music electrifies the room. Everyone on edge. Everything alive with the possibilities. Although there was much talk after the concert of the group playing together again this would sadly be the first and last time the trio would play. Tony passed away unexpectedly just a few weeks later making this his last documented performance and a fitting tribute to a truly great drummer and percussionist.

Scrive Mike Westbrook: "When in 1984 I chopped the William Tell Overture up into five bits and arranged them for a small marching band, as a street entertainment in Lausanne I had no idea we’d still be playing those tunes in 2013. That occasion was a festival in honour of William Tell, and we were escorted through the town by a trombone-playing Rossini, portrayed by comedian Bernard Maitre. It’s a good sign when, at the first rehearsal the musicians can’t play for laughing. Thirty years on, the humour of Rossini’s music is as irresistible as ever, as is the lyricism, the drama and passion."

Scrive Tim Hodgkinson, uno dei principali autori coinvolti: "Of all living composers, Dumitrescu is the one who has most exploded sound. Dumitrescu’s work is a negation, from the depths, of everything in contemporary music symptomatic of distraction, of banalisation, and of a radical loss of purpose. Stewart Lee interviewed the 16 musicians who participated in Just Not Cricket!, a three-day festival of British improvised music held in Berlin in October 2011. A four-LP box of selected performances from the festival is now available on Ni Vu Ni Connu. The performances and interviews were filmed by Antoine Prum, who directed Sunny’s Time Now, a 2008 documentary on Sunny Murray. Prum’s film of Just Not Cricket! is scheduled to be released in late 2013.

In occasione del suo impegno mensile al Vortex Evan Parker dedica il concerto di stasera a Martin e Madelaine Davidson, figure storiche della scena dell'improvvisazione londinese, tra i fondatori quasi quarant'anni fa della rivista Musics e della benemerita etichetta discografica Emanem (sigla forgiata sulle iniziali dei loro due nomi, e non frutto di qualche inaccurato spelling). Il programma si intitola Hasta la Vista, e vi intervengono tra gli altri John Russell, Caroline Kraabel, Adam Linson e Hannah Marshall.

"The Emanem label was founded in 1974 by Martin Davidson in order to publish music too good and too adventurous to be considered by most other labels. In particular, it seemed (and still seems) vitally important to document improvised music that does not use the vagaries of notation as a (somewhat imperfect) means of preservation. After sporadically releasing LPs on three continents, the label returned to London and has been releasing CDs since 1995, extending the Emanem tradition of undiluted exploratory excellence. The Emanem CD Series features improvised music at its very best - unadulterated new music for people who like new music unadulterated. Every CD is a labour of love - every one an important masterpiece - too good to discontinue. (Why waste time, effort and resources on anything less?) Most feature total improvisation, but some use partly composed material. The presentation of each CD and Emanem's web site concentrates on clarity (as does the music) - there is no desire to emulate the current fashion of obscuring and/or omitting vital information. The three vinyl sides of Pere Ubu Live at the Longhorn are as much an indispensable live rock album as Modern Dance is an indispensable studio album. The show consists mainly of material from the Modern Dance album, only rocked out and swinging, more raw-nerved yet seasoned than their studio counterparts. What becomes apparent, especially on repeated listens, is how well-made this music is, how the drama and comedy flows within the modules of each song, how the songs fit together to give an audience an experience that -- while sharpened to paranoia and sensitive to harsh realities -- is as ineffable as it is concrete.

Le vicende dei musicisti sudafricani esuli a Londra sul finire degli anni sessanta e il fulminante incontro con la scena del jazz britannico dell'epoca sono al centro della puntata di stanotte di Battiti: Blue Notes, Chris McGregor e Brotherhood Of Breath, i gruppi di Keith Tippett e di Elton Dean, S.O.S., Gary Windo e Symbiosis, i quintetti di Peter Lemer e di Joe Harriott... "A cavallo tra gli anni 60 e 70 il jazz in Gran Bretagna subisce un grande scatto di vitalità e innovazione, grazie a una scena musicale molto aperta in cui si affacciano artisti capaci e curiosi. Tony Common was a contemporary. After a while I began to feel I had more to say as a composer and musician than as a painter, and so fell into the world of jazz" (Mike Westbrook); "Padua, and our band is on a scaffolding stage erected against the outer south wall of the Scrovegni Chapel. Named after a Rahsaan Roland Kirk album, Rip Rig + Panic was one of the most exciting bands of the 1980s, fusing funk, jazz, punk and world music influences into a unique whole. With lead singer Neneh Cherry, the band recorded three albums for Virgin Records which have never been legitimately available on CD. All three LPs are now remastered from the original master tapes with a raft of bonus tracks taken from non-album singles. Original band members Gareth Sager (ex-Pop Group) and Mark Springer are involved with these releases, with the blessing of Neneh Cherry and (current PiL) drummer Bruce Smith.

Un'eccellente retrospettiva del lavoro di David Tudor come compositore è in un box di sette cd pubblicato da New World Records: The Art Of David Tudor 1963-1992.

"David Tudor's identity morphed seamlessly from interpreter of mainly acoustic music to composer-performer of predominately electronic music over a period of about ten years, from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s. This set of seven CDs, the first truly comprehensive survey of Tudor's work as a composer, goes beyond any previous attempt to document that process of transformation. Ne hanno seguito i movimenti United Mutations e Bazbo, documentando in particolare la tappa olandese di Heerlen: "Besides listening to a breath-taking performance, the thing to remember was the audience participation during Meta 01. We got treated to five different versions of Meta 01: the regular version, the one with half the band, an a capella version, an a capella version together with half of the audience, an a capella version by half of the audience. Day 1, August 15th
Keith Tippett + the Elysian Quartet.
The magnificent Elysian Quartet are drawn towards new projects, collaborations and playing that challenge notions of what a string quartet can do - what sounds and noises it can make and how performances can be presented. Tonight they perform as a quartet and as a piano quintet with Tippett, performing both their own pieces and pieces commissioned by the Kreutzer Quartet.

Day 2, August 16th
A world premiere: The Nine Dances of Patrick O'Gonogon, commissioned by Richard Wiltshire.
Performing with this magnificent Octet, Keith Tippett presents brand new contemporary jazz pieces in three movements, inspired by his Irish heritage.

This special collaborative performance brings together some of the most open musical thinkers of our time, challenging ideas of form and performance. With their combined pedigree, it’s no wonder Keith and Julie Tippett are revered as the royal couple of British out-sounds. They’ve been making music together for four decades and, unsurprisingly, there’s an astonishing level of telepathic interplay involved. Bring into the equation three members of ‘feisty boundary-pushers’ (the London Metro) the Elysian Quartet and this can only be an intriguing, irresistible journey. The architecture being complete when the last notes have decayed.
