Al compimento del suo quarto anno di vita un importante, meritatissimo riconoscimento è stato conferito al Cafe Oto - nella persona del suo responsabile, Hamish Dunbar - da una fondazione londinese, la Genesis Foundation, decisa a premiare nuovi talenti e forze emergenti nel campo delle arti di ricerca e d'avanguardia: "Hamish showed entrepreneurial courage in founding Café Oto and in a remarkably short time has designed an innovative space that has created a new audience for avant-garde music. His proven ability to bring different artists together, and the role he plays in forming creative relationships made him stand out from the other finalists. Transforming a disused warehouse into such a vibrant venue shows a degree of fearlessness that will stand him in good stead and make him a great mentor to musicians for many years to come. All the judges said that Café Oto was the venue that they wish to visit!”. Congratulazioni!

Sarà pronta a fine maggio 2012 la riedizione dell'album di Robert Wyatt The End Of An Ear curata da Esoteric Recordings; si può prenotarne un copia già ora presso il sito dell'etichetta, oppure tramite Burning Shed.

"Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a newly remastered edition of the legendary debut solo album by Robert Wyatt. Recorded in August 1970 whilst Wyatt was still a member of Soft Machine, his first solo outing was a blend of jazz and experimental music that he had pioneered on his composition ‘Moon in June’ on Soft Machine’s Third album. The sessions for The End Of An Ear saw Robert Wyatt joined by guests such as Dave Sinclair of Caravan and Soft Machine alumni Mark Charig and Elton Dean among others. This Esoteric Recordings reissue has been newly remastered from the original master tapes and features a booklet that fully restores all original album artwork with a new essay."

This is a very special work for all Portuguese jazz fans, not only because of historical reasons, but also emotional ones. At the end of the dictatorship, “Estilhaços” had the emblematic power to represent freedom in music: it was recorded live during a Lisbon concert in the beginning of 1972 (the revolution happened two years later, in 1974), being the first jazz record released in Portugal. What can seem strange is easily explainable: for the authorities, jazz was a decadent black music".

Nuovo gioiello di casa nato: Crescendo in Duke, il repertorio di Duke Ellington riletto dal pianista Benoît Delbecq, con Tony Coe, Tony Malaby, Antonin-Tri Hoang, Jean-Jacques Avenel, Steve Argüelles, The Hornheads, Yohannes Tona e Michael Bland.

MaerzMusik 2012 serves as an experimental setting: by presenting the work of John Cage and Wolfgang Rihm, who both mark anniversaries this year, two artistic positions confront one another that could hardly be more contradictory in their respective radicalism. They can be viewed as poles of a contemporary musical cosmos which emerges as a multi- dimensional, creative field of tension, constantly developing further yet without really being reconciled under the ostensibly protective roof of 'anything goes' pluralism.

Heiner Goebbels' works embrace the many aspects of his life in music in ways that feel both entirely natural and very personal: leftfield rock and improvisation, radio plays, notated music, cinema, critical musicology and theatre. He has an affinity with Hanns Eisler. Just as Eisler's work alongside Brecht's theatre inspired a new radical music, so Goebbels' work with the director Heiner Muller in the '80s and early '90s spurred him on to create a musical idiom both new and very much his own. The Frontiers + programme celebrates Goebbels' ground-breaking work, alongside works by related composers. Plus, the Symposium offers a chance to hear Goebbels himself discussing his unique approach. The Birmingham City University will award Heiner Goebbels a Honorary Degree of Doctor of the University "in recognition of his unique and distinguished achievements as a composer and his outstanding lifelong contribution to the development of contemporary music".

I founded Birmingham Jazz in 1976 with the help of six other enthusiasts; we each put £25 on my dining room table and said we would promote some concerts for as long as the money held out. Birmingham Jazz has promoted live jazz ever since - a remarkable achievement. Our first concert was with Barbara Thompson's Paraphernalia; I'm not sure who were our second but Mike Osborne's trio with Harry Miller and Tony Levin was the third, on 7 November 1976. These concerts took place in the Warwick Suite of the Grand Hotel, Colmore Row, Birmingham that was our home base for the first five years. The musicians gave me permission to record the concert as a souvenir on my Maxwell C180 tape and Yamaha recorder, and it subsequently remained unplayed in my files until unearthed in 2009; amazingly the tape had not deteriorated in any way and gives a very high quality documentation of an outstanding evening's music making".

Non è tempo d'esitar, l'edizione è limitata a mille copie! Elton Dean's Ninesense, The 100 Club Concert 1979, per Reel Recordings: Elton Dean con Alan Skidmore, Mark Charig, Harry Beckett, Nick Evans, Radu Malfatti, Keith Tippett, Harry Miller e Louis Moholo - cui si unisce anche Jim Dvorak nel secondo set - il 5 marzo 1979 al 100 Club di Londra.

Reel Recordings releases a stunning two compact disc celebrating the thirty-third anniversary of The 100 Club Concert 1979: an exhilarating jazz concert performance selected from the private tape library of Italian jazz aficionado Riccardo Bergerone. Produced in cooperation with the Estate of Elton Dean, the musicians, and Ogun Records. For the many friends and fans of the late saxophonist and composer Elton Dean, this poignant double compact disc release is the debut presentation of a complete concert performance from Elton’s ensemble of Brit-Jazz firebrands known as Ninesense. Complimenting this release is a twelve page booklet from the pen and archive of Riccardo Bergerone, the young Italian friend of Elton who recorded this extraordinary concert using a Pro Sony TC-D5M cassette recorder at the stage front table. All of the musical magic from these magnificent charts and soloists are potently heard, and on full display! Completing Riccardo's special document of Elton's Ninesense in full concert flight is an inner three panel photo gallery of Ninesense in concert, courtesy of the Jak Kilby Archive. Remastering: doctoring, sonic nursing via outboard Drawmer tube EQ & tube Compressor by Michael King.

Da un concerto in Belgio del luglio 1979 un nuovo prezioso documento Ogun sull'attività dei Blue Notes: Before The Wind Changes, con i magnifici quattro Chris McGregor, Dudu Pukwana, Johnny Dyani e Louis Moholo.

Second recording from the Blue Notes' 1979 tour of Belgium and Holland, taken from tour organiser Rob Sotemann's tape archive. Whereas the critically acclaimed first volume from this archive, Spiritual Knowledge And Grace (OGCD 035) featured an impromptu collaboration between Blue Notes members Louis Moholo, Dudu Pukwana & Johnny Dyani and American tenor sax powerhouse Frank Wright, Before The Wind Changes focuses on the established quartet line-up with Chris McGregor at the piano and features an incendiary performance from Waregem.

Informazioni in dettaglio in http://www.thewire.co.uk/articles/8525

Robert Wyatt is appearing at The Wire Salon on 12 April. Tickets sold out in just a few days, so we're running a competition for three people to win pairs of tickets. Rather than create a Googleable trivia question, we're asking readers to send in artistic interpretations of a Robert Wyatt song. Any media is accepted: painting, illustrations, video, audio, interpretative dance, or sculpture (the latter suggested by Edwin Pouncey). Entries will be judged and selected by the staff of The Wire, and winners will be notified by email or phone. Closing date for entries is midnight GMT on 25 March, and winners will be notified by 5 April. NB: The Wire will not pass on contact details to any third party, and we cannot return any work sent in, but we may show your artwork to Robert Wyatt come April.

"In Europe, he is revered as an innovator and guitarist on par with folks like Derek Bailey and John Fahey. He invented his own unique language on the instrument – but he didn’t stop there. He radically modified and created wild new hybrid guitars that produced sounds like the koto, organ, harpsichord, chimes, and even electronics. All of this in the service of extending the expressive possibilities of his music. We’re slightly embarrassed to admit that we’re relative newcomers to him ourselves. He’s virtually unknown in the U.S. and we’re guessing many of you aren’t overly familiar with him either. When he recently passed away, it was hard to find more than one obit for him across the entire English speaking internet!"

Due settimane di concerti all'insegna dell'incontro e dell'interazione tra musicisti di Zurigo e di New York (e non solo): Intakt Records at The Stone, dall'1 al 15 marzo. Informazioni, rassegna stampa e programma completo in http://www.intaktrec.ch/wordpress e in http://thestonenyc.com

Intakt Records is a Zürich based record label that produces creative jazz. It was formed in 1986 by Patrik Landolt and Rosmarie A. Meier to serve the needs of a community of creative jazz artists in Zürich, Berlin, London, etc, committed to exploring the edge of improvisation, composition and innovation. Intakt is a non profit association. In the executive committee are the musicians Irène Schweizer and Lucas Niggli. «Small in budget, but immense in quality», praises “The New York City Jazz Records” Intakt Records. More than 200 recordings have been released up to today. For these two weeks in The Stone, Intakt Records founded the association “Zurich-New York” with veteran drummer Pierre Favre as chair to finance traveling and accommodation of the Zurich based musicians to make their stay in New York possible. Two years of work and the project is now on track: From the 1st to the 15th of March 2012 ‘The Stone’ will host a thirteen day festival with 26 concerts. ‘The Stone’, probably the most important address for creative jazz in New York, will become a place for musicians from Zurich and New York to collaborate. Established names from the Swiss jazz scene such as Irène Schweizer, Pierre Favre, Lucas Niggli, Dieter Ulrich, Philipp Schaufelberger, Gabriela Friedli, Jan Schlegel, Christian Weber und Co Streiff along with newcomers such as Michael Jaeger, Fabian Gisler, Samuel Blaser or Julian Sartorius will play with musicians from New York such as Oliver Lake, Andrew Cyrille, Russ Johnson, Ray Anderson, Elliott Sharp, Fred Frith, Tim Berne, Tony Malaby, Tom Rainey, Ingrid Laubrock, Sylvie Courvoisier, Mark Feldman.
