Inizia oggi l'attesa - o temuta - campagna di ristampe di 60 album di Frank Zappa concordata dallo Zappa Family Trust con la Universal Music Enterprises, dopo aver ottenuto il blocco delle vendite e il ritiro del catalogo in carico alla Rykodisc. Si andrà a ritmo di dodici titoli ogni mese, da luglio a novembre 2012. Questioni, opinioni, entusiasmi e perplessità in merito all'iniziativa e alla qualità delle riedizioni abbondano nei blog e nei forum di discussione zappiani, soprattutto Zappateers, United Mutations e You Call That News?. GandsMusic offre qualche utile delucidazione sulle fonti relative alla prima sfornata di album, mentre in sede ufficiale la vedova Zappa risponde - come sa e come vuole - alle domandine dei fan.

Sono diverse le iniziative che celebrano quest'anno il settantacinquesimo anniversario delle prime incisioni di studio di Raymond Scott: concerti in suo onore e con le sue musiche, conferenze, proiezioni commentate del film biografico Deconstructing Dad, pubblicazioni di materiali inediti e ristampe - specialmente in vinile - di alcuni suoi rari lavori. Uno dei massimi conoscitori e divulgatori dell'opera di Scott, Jeff Winner, ha preso parte al programma monografico prodotto per l'occasione dall'emittente radiofonica di Berkeley, Kalx, ora archiviato in SoundCloud. Anche Battiti, il programma di Pino Saulo su Rai RadioTre, mette in onda domani sera, a partire dalla mezzanotte, uno speciale dedicato al geniale compositore newyorkese scomparso nel 1994.

2012 marks the 75th Anniversary of Raymond Scott's music, which is forever associated with Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck - though bandleader-composer Scott had no interest in cartoons. Ever! Composer, electronic music pioneer, inventor, and bandstand drill sergeant Raymond Scott was born Harry Warnow, in Brooklyn, in 1908. After graduating from Juilliard, he wrote the 1934 hit song “Christmas Night In Harlem,” recorded by Louis Armstrong. In December 1936, Scott debuted his six-man “Quintette,” which featured jazz giant Bunny Berigan on trumpet and drummer Johnny Williams, father of famous movie score composer John Williams. By early 1937, Scott's Quintette were stars on radio, on records, and - after landing a contract with 20th Century Fox - in Hollywood films. The Raymond Scott's Quintette reeled off a string of quirky hit records, including “Powerhouse” (recorded February 20, 1937 in New York at their first studio session). Thanks to its being quoted by Carl Stalling in dozens of Looney Tunes, the "Powerhouse" melodies have become genetically encoded in the DNA of every earthling.

Alla serie di ristampe di importanti lavori brötzmanniani avviata dall'austriaca Cien Fuegos - tutte edizioni in vinile e a tiratura limitata, ereditate pari pari dalla FMP - si aggiungono altri due storici titoli degli anni settanta: Schwarzwaldfahrtfrutto di un soggiorno dall'esito insolito nella Foresta Nera, nell'inverno 1977, in compagnia di Han Bennink, e The Nearer The Bone, The Sweeter The Meat, tratto dal controverso concerto del trio di Brötzmann con Harry Miller e Louis Moholo al festival FMP di Berlino nel 1979. Concerto che così ricorda Eugene Chadbourne: "Saxophone terrorist Peter Brötzmann brought this group to the 1979 FMP Festival in Berlin and was promptly accused of retrenching; the sound of the trio hearkened back to the solid feel of black free jazz rather than splintering the brain with the seeming anarchy of the European free jazz scene of the time. The late bassist Harry Miller and drummer Louis Moholo both have South African roots and busily provided rhythm section support, together and in a variety of other combinations, for many different European players of a variety of persuasions. While listeners of the time might have felt Brötzmann was holding something back, the performance actually predicts the saxophonist's later activity, especially his '90s collaboration with players such as Hamid Drake and William Parker. While much of the European scene at the time veered toward inexplicable intensity, this performance is reminiscent of players such as Pharoah Sanders, with a slow, steady build toward a musical inferno guided by a similar feeling of intense spirituality."

Torna disponibile su Incus Records l'album di Derek Bailey New Sights, Old Sounds, pubblicato in Giappone da Aquirax Aida per la sua etichetta Morgue nel 1978, e divenuto subito introvabile nel formato originale di doppio LP, uno in studio e uno dal vivo. La Incus ne produsse una versione in cd nel 2002, andata anch'essa ben presto esaurita. Scrisse all'epoca della ristampa John Eyles: "One cd is studio recorded, the other live. They provide an interesting contrast, one that goes beyond his using acoustic guitar in the studio and electric guitar live. In the studio, Bailey is introspective and exploratory. With no other player to react to, he sounds exposed. His avoidance of the expected, of clichés, of well-worn paths (call it what you will) seems more tangible than ever. Sometimes, his deliberation is almost painful to hear. Live, although his methodology is not radically different from in the studio, Bailey sounds more assured and fluent, less introspective. He has the audience to react to, but is not just playing to the audience, he is playing to the gallery. On this early trip to Japan, he seems keen to make a lasting impression. The live set uses amplification and feedback to good effect, with periods where the sound is just in control, teetering on the edge of chaos."

A l'improviste, programma settimanale di France Musique dedicato a jazz e improvvisazione, propone un concerto in solo del bravissimo Paul Rogers, registrato per Radio France il 14 gennaio di quest'anno. Poco distante, negli archivi video dell'emittente, si trova un concerto dell'inseparabile Paul Dunmall, in trio con Hasse Poulsen e Mark Sanders, registrato lo scorso 5 maggio.

Paul Rogers est de la race des très grands. Musicien rebelle, toujours en colère, il poursuit depuis trois décennies un parcours exemplaire, sans jamais la moindre concession, avec une intégrité, une exigence, une sincérité qui forcent le respect. Son unives, nourri tout autant au free qu'à la musique baroque, folklorique ou au punk le plus crasseux est l'un des plus riche et original qui soit. Un univers sans frontière aucune qui n'aurait pu tolérer d'être limité par l'instrument. Et avant même de commencer à tourner en rond avec la contrebasse, il a décidé, il y a maintenant quelques années, de mettre au placard sa grand-mère et de se faire construire cette 7 string bass, propotype inédit bardé de cordes sympathiques, qu'il ne lâche plus depuis.

Festa di compleanno per Eddie Prévost questa sera a Londra al Cafe Oto: intervengono John Tilbury, John White, Sebastian Lexer, John Butcher, Harrison Smith, Michael Parsons e Seymour Wright tra gli altri. Auguri!

A celebration for the 70th Birthday of Eddie Prévost, a percussionist of immense fire, grace and invention and one of the most important figures in British improvised music. Prévost was one of the founders of the essential AMM and has collaborated with the greatest improvisers internationally. He has kept a continuous contact with the scene since the 60's and always manages to invent anew his contribution to "meta-music".
This special birthday concert will include the following performances as well as further contributions and appreciations from John Tilbury, Victor Schonfeld, Evan Parker, the Eddie Prevost Workshop and more amongst the special home-made cakes and party food... Steve Beresford: "He was recognisable by a single note, and that was his intention. He sounded like Lol when he played with The Damned and he sounded like Lol when he played with Evan Parker."
Judy Dyble: "His name was Lowen and he was a lovely man. I was part of a short-lived band with Lol and Steve and Phil Miller, as (would you believe) Dyble Coxhill and the Miller Brothers or DC and the MBs for slightly short. We did a small tour of the Netherlands and some university gigs and then went our separate ways, but in that short time I learned a huge amount about freeform improvisation and learned to love it immensely".
Fabrizio Spera: "Incontrandolo più volte nella sua città, mi ha sempre colpito quanto fosse forte la sua presenza all'interno della comunità musicale londinese. Lol attraversava la città in bus e anche negli ultimi anni, sebbene in condizioni fisiche sempre più aggravate, Lol era sempre presente. Tra locali, pub, negozi di dischi, gallerie d'arte, in concerto, o semplicemente tra il pubblico ad ascoltare la musica degli altri, la sua presenza, come del resto quella di Steve Beresford, rappresentava una sicurezza per la comunità."
Bruce Lee Gallanter: "Sometimes in the mid-nineties, Lol played a short US solo tour on the East Coast. On his way to a gig, Lol was in bad car accident and broke his jaw, thus ending the tour since he couldn't play for a while. He returned to England to convalesce and was given a benefit show in London to help raise money for his medical expenses. A number of the UK's finest musicians played in various combinations throughout the night. While Elton Dean was sitting in the back of the club, a jam session was taking place on stage. A rather large woman in a long dress took to the stage and was playing tenor sax. When it was her turn to solo, she wailed and blew away everyone else on stage and in the club. Elton looked to see who was playing so well, but didn't recognize her. Everyone was mystified as to who she was. When her long solo was over and everyone in attendance was hooting and hollering for more, she pulled off her wig to reveal a bald head and guess who it was underneath... none other than Lol Coxhill himself!"

Su etichetta Ogun torna alla luce - ed è la prima volta in cd - In His Good Time, album di Chris McGregor tratto da un concerto in solo tenuto a Parigi al Palais des Glaces il 18 novembre 1977. I brani in più rispetto all'originale in vinile, pubblicato nel 1979, provengono da quello stesso concerto. Wheeeeeeeee!

Cette fois, c'est au groupe fondateur du mouvement qu'il s'attaque. Parallèlement, il traduit la passionnante autobiographie du légendaire batteur de Yes, King Crimson et de son groupe Earthworks, Bill Bruford.

Nel perdurare del periodo di inattività del gruppo-madre Stereolab, Laetitia Sadier pubblica il suo secondo album da titolare solista, Silencio, su etichetta Drag City. La cantante si è esibita quasi in incognito qualche sera fa a Londra al Cinema Museum, convocata in bizzarra compagnia da Marie Merlet.
