C'è un nuovo box cartonato nella serie antologica voluta da Sven-Åke Johansson per rivisitare il proprio passato, prossimo e remoto: Blended Box, con musiche riprese in varie occasioni tra il 1976 e il 2014, tra cui un esilarante concerto berlinese di Lol Coxhill (Komm Wenn's Dunkel Wird Zu Mir) con i quattro inguaribili nostalgici di Night & Day - Rüdiger Carl, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Jay Oliver e Johansson - e un avventuroso duetto del batterista e fisarmonicista con un giovane Hans Reichel (Mittschnitt In Wilmersdorf).

Uno storico lavoro di Heiner Goebbels, Schwarz auf Weiss / Black on White (1996), apparso in cd e dvd e in diversa versione anche in radio e televisione, viene presentato per la prima volta a Roma questa sera, al Teatro Argentina, a inaugurazione del Fast Forward Festival. C'è anche l'Ensemble Modern, naturalmente, cui il lavoro è stato affidato fin dall'inizio, e che anzi lo commissionò: "It was a challenge - disse all'epoca Goebbels - to conceive a piece which was not based on protagonists, not on stars, not on soloists, but on a calibrated number of musicians, a true collective - because the Ensemble Modern is really an orchestra whose musicians decide themselves what they are going to play, who's going to conduct. They don't have an artistic director. They make the artistic decisions themselves. So it was quite a good coincidence that these plans came together with such an ensemble."

La voce nei suoi molteplici aspetti espressivi e funzionali, fisiologici e psicologici, storici e artistici, sociali e culturali è al centro della straordinaria mostra This Is A Voice allestita a Londra alla Wellcome Collection e aperta ancora fino a fine luglio 2016. Sono ritratti con documenti audio e video alcuni lavori di Joan La Barbara - che a metà aprile ha personalmente inaugurato il programma - Anna Barham, Laurie Anderson, Henri Chopin, Marcus Coates, Steven Cottingham, Danica Dakić, Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Matthew Herbert, Meredith Monk, Imogen Stidworthy, Gregory Whitehead e moltissimi altri. This Is A Voice looks inside vocal tracts, restless minds and speech devices to capture the elusive nature of the human voice. This exhibition explores how the unique grain of our voice locates us socially, geographically and psychologically and how the voice is utterly flexible and can be altered with treatment and training. This Is A Voice presents works by artists and vocalists, punctuated by paintings, manuscripts, medical illustrations and ethnographic objects. Designed as an acoustic journey, the spotlight is cast on the meaning and emotions conveyed through the patterns of rhythm, stress and intonation. La cripta della chiesa di St. Giles a Londra, nel cuore di Camberwell, adibita ormai da vent'anni a club e spazio per ritrovi e concerti, ha offerto sabato scorso un'ambientazione quanto mai appropriata al concerto dell'Inspiral Trio, ovvero Dave Sturt con Ian East e Kavus Torabi, alla ricerca di traiettorie libere al di fuori della galassia Gong in cui da tempo gravitano insieme. Durante uno dei momenti individuali, quello proposto da Kavus, sono intervenute a dar man forte due sue compagne in Knifeworld, Melanie Woods e Chlöe Herington, quest'ultima sassofonista e fagottista anche in Half The Sky.

Tre intensi giorni di repliche a Londra, al CLF Theatre di Peckham, per l'atteso spettacolo di musica e teatro Here Come The Rattling Trees messo in opera dagli High Llamas, con storie dialoghi e sceneggiatura originali testati in pubblico per la prima volta un paio d'anni fa e un omonimo album disponibile da qualche mese per Drag City. Per un centinaio di spettatori per volta, fino al 25 maggio.

Here Come The Rattling Trees is an album driven by narratives, which is performed as a kind of re-shaped, Theatre blending live music and spoken work. The piece centres around Peckham-based publicist Amy who learns about the history and the gentrified development of Peckham through five of Peckham Square’s distinguished locals: a plumber, a cafe worker in her sixties, a decorator, a housewife and a health fanatic. The narrative is accompanied by instrumental passages from the album ‘Here Come the Rattling Trees’ gently carrying the audience along a journey of mixed nostalgia of Peckham past into Peckham future.
The High Llamas write and perform “inspired baroque pop from sunny California to Peckham High Street” (Mojo). The brain child of singer and guitarist Sean O’Hagan, these Peckham locals have an impressive discography stretching back to the early 90s. The Llamas combine a colourful array of electric, acoustic and synthetic instruments coupled with O’Hagan’s gentled vocals, a sound that has been honed to perfection over their various releases and one that are deployed incredibly effectively in this production - providing an incisive and sympathetic look at the small wonders of everyday life.

E' arrivato alfine il sospirato giorno del debutto londinese dello spettacolo di Mike e Kate Westbrook A Bigger Show, con una scalpitante Uncommon Orchestra in formazione completa - ventidue elementi, tra cui per l'occasione anche Pete Whyman - cui il sobrio palco del Kings Place rischia perfino di andare un po' stretto. Si inizia alle 20.00. There are physical bodies and lovers galore, friends!

"Once again the Westbrooks’ vision of modern life finds powerful expression in a work featuring rousing and often turbulent ensemble work with instrumental solos of real substance from such familiar figures as Alan Wakeman on soprano and tenor saxophones and Dave Holdsworth on pocket trumpet and Sousaphone, and newer names like the altoist Roz Harding, the trumpeter Sam Massey and the tenorist Gary Bayley. As has been the case with Mike Westbrook since the beginning of his career, the improvisations emerge from the arrangements in an organic and dramatically satisfying way — the work of composer who has paid close (but never imitative) attention to the lessons handed out by Ellington, Mingus and Gil Evans.
The tone is variously raucous and tender, celebratory and scathing. Kate Westbrook’s lyrics, sung by herself, Martine Waltier and Billy Bottle, are etched in acid (particularly in a song satirising the social media). Human nature and human behaviour, they suggest, are little altered since the days of Blake and Hogarth: in an era when the gap between affluence and poverty is widening rapidly, only the superficial symptoms of excess and deprivation differ.

A Bigger Show is ambitious, thought-provoking, and exhilarating; when it ends, you feel as though you’ve been on a journey. Una piccola delegazione della Uncommon Orchestra di Mike Westbrook partecipa oggi - alle 16.30, ora locale - al programma radiofonico In Tune di Radio 3 della BBC per presentare dal vivo qualche passaggio dello spettacolo che non ha mai fine: A Bigger Show.

Ha scritto Andy Robson, per Jazzwise: "It shouldn't be allowed. At an age when they should be revelling in their freedom passes, the Westbrooks refuse to compromise with the Furies and instead, like all great artists, they grasp life and dare to reflect it back to us in all its tainted glory. A Bigger Show is a sprawling big band project featuring three very different vocalists and a roaring chorus of brass. Compie oggi cinquant'anni uno degli album davvero epocali nella storia del pop, Pet Sounds dei Beach Boys, frutto dell'inarrivabile genio di Brian Wilson in un anno perfino per lui irripetibile, il 1966, nel quale diede al mondo anche Good Vibrations (tenendo però per sé, e drammaticamente, Smile).
Come già in occasione di precedenti anniversari - in particolare per il trentennale, con il magnifico box The Pet Sounds Sessions - sono previste riedizioni discografiche commemorative e speciali in vari formati ed estensioni. E c'è anche un lungo tour di concerti, iniziato ieri nel Regno Unito, dove sentire l'opera eseguita integralmente per l'ultima volta.

Recorded and released in 1966, not long after the sunny, textural experiments of California Girls, Pet Sounds, aside from its importance as Brian Wilson's evolutionary compositional masterpiece, was the first rock record that can be considered a "concept album"; from first cut to last we were treated to an intense, linear personal vision of the vagaries of a love affair and the painful, introverted anxieties that are the wrenching precipitates of the unstable chemistry of any love relationship. This trenchant cycle of love songs has the emotional impact of a shatteringly evocative novel, and by God if this little record didn't change only the course of popular music, but the course of a few lives in the bargain. It sure as hell changed its creator, Brian, who by 1966 had been cruising along at the forefront of American popular music for four years, doling out a constant river of hit songs and producing that tough yet mellifluous sound that was the only intelligent innovation in pop music between Chuck Berry and the Beatles.

Si è concluso oggi a Zagabria (Croazia) il festival Showroom of Contemporary Sound, accurata indagine dentro e fuor d'accademia su nuove musiche e suono contemporaneo, giunta quest'anno alla quarta edizione con un fitto programma di concerti, conferenze e installazioni presso il ricostruito Padiglione francese del Centro Studentesco. Tra gli invitati c'erano Fred Frith, Chris Cutler, Heike Liss e Susana Santos Silva in quartetto con un set di musica e immagini in interazione, e Frith poi impegnato anche in un duo di improvvisazione con Tim Hodgkinson. Quest'ultimo ha avuto modo di inaugurare le presentazioni pubbliche del suo libro Music and the Myth of Wholeness (MIT Press, 2016), con una conversazione con Robert Barry.

The new music festival of Music Showroom promotes and presents musical exploration, development of technology and creating new DIY instruments and software, it is open to young people and it gives space for experimenting, while not dividing musicians and composers to academically educated and those educated outside the institutions, but promotes a dialogue between them, mutual collaboration and exchange of knowledge and ideas. It is precisely the openness of the concept that enables the festival programme to change and redesign itself, following the contemporary music production and shifting its focus in the direction of new tendencies.

This Is Not This Heat’s Barbican Hall date – scheduled for Friday 17 June – has unfortunately had to be postponed. Drummer Charles Hayward recently sustained a serious ankle injury and has received medical advice that a lengthy recovery period is required. The new Barbican Hall concert date – featuring the same line-up – has been confirmed for Saturday 4 March 2017.
Charles Hayward stated: ‘we want to play the music but I took a fall and I’m going to need a while to recover and to get back to where I need to be to play with the strength the music needs. Lots of love from me, Charles Bullen and all the players in This Is Not This Heat. We will see you again in a while.’
On the 13 February 1976, experimental rock band This Heat played its first show. Now, 40 years later, founding members Charles Bullen and Charles Hayward reunite, joined by a host of special guests, to perform new interpretations of their music.
Arguably the most inventive band to emerge from the UK’s fruitful DIY scene in the 70s, This Heat’s career may have been short-lived, but its legacy continues to grow in stature and relevance. Still sounding as wild and original as when it was written, their music has as much in common with modern composers like John Cage as their art-rock contemporaries Gang of Four and The Pop Group.
Matching jagged post-punk guitar sounds with hard rhythms, dub production techniques and tape loops, here the band’s twisting, freeform songs are fully realised live, with guests including Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), James Sedwards and Thurston Moore adding new textures to their expansive sound.

Domino Records rimette in circolazione un paio di album di Robert Wyatt, Shleep e Comicopera, nello stesso speciale formato in doppio vinile - con brani e altro in più rispetto alle edizioni standard - in cui li pubblicò rispettivamente nel 2007 e 2008. Sono ristampe a tiratura limitata, che si possono richiedere in anticipo tramite Burning Shed.

Double 180g vinyl editions with download cards. Shleep contains 8 bonus tracks, while Comicopera features a fourth side etching. These are limited edition 2016 re-presses of Domino Records 2007 and 2008 editions. Robert Wyatt's seventh and ninth studio albums from 1997 and 2007 respectively, the albums feature guest appearances by Brian Eno, Phil Manzanera, Philip Catherine, Dave Sinclair and others. Shleep was seen as something of a return to the charming experiments of Wyatt's best 1970s work, while Comicopera was voted the 'album of 2007' by Wire magazine.
