Il documentario è andato in onda in TV la scorsa settimana, ma lo si ritrova sul web - per qualche giorno ancora - al sito di BBC Four. Val la pena recuperarlo anche solo per risentire la voce narrante di Nigel Planer volteggiare senza posa tra Paper Sun, My White Bicycle, A Very Cellular Song, Interstellar Overdrive e Hope for Happiness e decine di altri brani-manifesto di un'intera epoca: Psychedelic Britannia.

Documentary exploring the rise and fall of the most visionary period in British music history: five kaleidoscopic years between 1965 and 1970 when a handful of dreamers reimagined pop music. When a generation of British R&B bands discovered LSD, conventions were questioned. From out of the bohemian underground and into the pop mainstream, the psychedelic era produced some of the most ground-breaking music ever made, pioneered by young improvising bands like Soft Machine and Pink Floyd, then quickly taken to the charts by the likes of the Beatles, Procol Harum, the Small Faces and the Moody Blues, even while being reimagined in the country by bucolic, folk-based artists like the Incredible String Band and Vashti Bunyan. L'ultimo messaggio che Daevid Allen consegnò al gruppo fu insieme un'invocazione di grazia e una dichiarazione di immensa fiducia: "I feel you are all equally on the brink of a whole new era of Gong, musically, lyrically and spiritually and that pretty much all you have each done until now has been a preparation for this time. I want you to know I am 100% behind you with this project and I wish you huge success in every way you decide to measure that success. I am really proud of laying the foundation for the Gong tradition and have done my best to make it as multi-layered, wide-ranging and open-ended as I possibly could so that almost anything was possible as a result. Dopo la serie televisiva prodotta e trasmessa dalla BBC dieci anni fa, secondo l'adattamento di Dick Clement e Ian La Frenais, ci sarà presto anche una versione teatrale di uno dei capolavori di Jonathan Coe, The Rotters' Club: il debutto è atteso ad aprile 2016, con l'adattamento di Richard Cameron e la regia di Gwenda Hughes per il Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

Jonathan Coe's iconic 1970s coming-of-age novel, The Rotters' Club is brought to life on stage for the first time in an adaptation by Richard Cameron. Set in Birmingham, The Rotters' Club follows Benjamin Trotter through the hilarious and, at times, touching trials and tribulations of growing up in an era of IRA bombs, industrial strife and punk rock. Inspired by Jonathan's Coe's own school days in Birmingham and written from a young person's perspective, this production, commissioned by The REP and directed by Gwenda Hughes, will feature a large cast of young people drawn from across the city.

La berlinese Staubgold recupera il primo extended play di Family Fodder, Sunday Girls (1979), vi aggiunge qualche brano attingendo da vari singoli di quegli anni - anche un paio di episodi Frank Sumatra di epoca appena precedente - e ne fa un vivace cd antologico ancora ricco di sorprese: Sunday Girls (Director’s Cut).

Family Fodder was originally formed in 1979 by Alig Pearce - with a cast of thousands over three decades. They emerged from the melting-pot of 70s/80s London alongside This Heat, The Flying Lizards, The Pop Group, Slits and many others. The original formula consisted of psychedelic and new wave influences, incisive song-writing, improvisation, experiment and far-out dub mixing. They always managed to evade major exposure, but influenced generations of bands on five continents. Family Fodder was often more at home in the studio than on-stage, but completed several European tours as well as cherished performances in their native London.
The group released a series of compelling, now collectable singles and albums between 1979 and 1983. Sunday Girls (Director’s Cut) comes as a lovingly assembled full-length album compilation. It features the complete Sunday Girls EP from 1979, the very first Family Fodder 7" single Playing Golf (1979), the Debbie Harry 7" from 1980, the 7" A side Warm (1980) and last not least two tracks from the rare Te Deum 12" (1979) by Alig Fodder’s pre-Fodder project Frank Sumatra.

La viennese Klanggalerie - che a suo tempo ereditò dalla defunta Ralph Europe la distribuzione europea di alcuni materiali di Residents e soci - si incarica ora di rimettere in circolazione l'album di esordio del bizzarrissimo duo Renaldo & The Loaf, Play Struvé & Sneff, divenuto negli anni oggetto introvabile in qualsiasi formato, LP compact disc o audiocassetta. Lo fa con un'edizione in due cd dove trova spazio proprio la versione originale in audiocassetta, quella del 1979, e la registrazione dell'unico concerto dal vivo compiuto dai due, di lì a poco.

Often called the British Residents, Renaldo & The Loaf made some of the most exceptional music ever. Struvé & Sneff was their first ever album. It came out as a cassette in 1979 and was later re-issued on LP and CD. However, these versions contained a different mix to the one from the original cassette. Klanggalerie are now proudly presenting you the original version of this outstanding debut album for the first time on CD! And if that weren't enough, there is a bonus CD as well. It's a recording of the one and only live concert RATL ever played. Reclama giusta attenzione il nuovissimo album policromo e brillante di Brian Woodbury, per anni quasi totalmente assorbito dal suo lavoro di compositore e supervisore delle musiche di canali televisivi come ABC e Disney Channel, e qui di nuovo in compagnia del suo Popular Music Group: Pay Attention. Brian Woodbury is a Los Angeles composer, lyricist and bandleader. He writes stage musicals, post-modern concert music, quirky pop, country songs, and music for children’s TV. He is founder of several groups: Town & Country, a blue state country band with frontman Rob Shapiro; the Variety Orchestra, a large post-modern jazz-latin-bluegrass ensemble; the Popular Music Group, a quirky pop band, and Some Philharmonic, an avant funk new wave band. With his groups or solo he has released sevenalbums: Town & Country; Variety Orchestra; The Brian Woodbury Songbook; Brian Woodbury & his Popular Music GroupAll White People Look Alike; Some Philharmonic and now his latest Pay Attention, with the revived Popular Music Group. For TV, Mr. Woodbury wrote the theme song for Pepper Ann, and co-wrote the theme for Teacher’s Pet, both Saturday morning cartoon series on ABC. He was the supervising songwriter on Disney’s Book of Pooh and for Jim Henson’s Bear in the Big Blue House, both on the Disney Channel. He was also a principal songwriter for PBS’s It’s a Big, Big World. Mr. Woodbury began writing and performing at the age of 11. In college he studied musical comedy songwriting with Tom Lehrer, and music composition with Bernard Rands and Pauline Oliveros, and jazz composition with Jimmy Cheatham. He has collaborated with Van Dyke Parks.

Roberto Musci e Giovanni Venosta festeggiano trent'anni di collaborazioni componendo un cd di inediti e rarità che raccoglie il loro primo lavoro insieme (Woman in Late) e anche l'ultimo, per ora (Tales from Kiribati Island). Massimo spazio è dato alle musiche composte per il film di Carl Theodore Dreyer Vampyr (1932), eseguite in concerto nel 1998 - e mai più dopo di allora - in trio con Chris Cutler. Felice anniversario!

Vampyr, one of the first horror movies with sound, is the work of the highly influential danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer. After directing the monumental "La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc" in 1928, Dreyer decided to make this modest film based on the novel "In a Glass Darkly" by Sheridan Le Fanu; while this is indeed his first movie with sound, it was conceived as a silent film, and the movie contains very few dialog. The movie is about a traveler, named Allan Grey (Julian West), who gets involved in a nightmarish plot when the owner of the inn where he is staying asks him for help to save his family from what he believes is a vampire. We follow Allan Grey in his surrealistic trip to madness as he finds out more and more about the supposed vampire that haunts the manor turned inn. The Gothic manor and the lonely rural exteriors increase the haunting atmosphere and the beautiful images Dreyer conceived are the work of a genius. The structure of the script may be complicated, but it shows its influence over David Lynch and other filmmakers with similar surrealist story lines and dreamlike sequences. This masterpiece is a must see for any horror fan ; It is a nightmarish trip to the darker parts of the subconscious mind.
The soundtrack for Carl Theodor Dreyer’s Vampyr was one of our later attempts to combine all these elements. There was only one performance - with Chris Cutler contributing unscripted percussion and live-electronics - at the Palazzina Liberty, in 1998; the recording featured here. Vampyr is not a silent movie but there is very little dialogue, so we sampled the spoken parts, transforming them into sounds to use in building our accompaniment. In an interview in 1935, Dreyer said that the advent of sound in the cinema came ‘too soon’ and, for this reason, we chose to transform the movie’s sparse dialogue using live electronic processing into musical elements of our score, as if Vampyr were, indeed, still a silent movie.

L'etichetta RPM Records, un'associata della londinese Cherry Red, pubblica in un box dal titolo Turtle Records-Pioneering British Jazz 1970-1971 le prime ristampe ufficiali di tre album usciti in quegli anni per l'etichetta di Peter Eden, la Turtle Records appunto. Si tratta di Outback (Mike Osborne), Flight (Howard Riley) e Pause, And Think Again (John Taylor), capitoli importanti nella storia del jazz britannico di quell'epoca - cui contribuirono tra gli altri Chris McGregor, Louis Moholo, John Surman, Kenny Wheeler, Harry Beckett, Barry Guy, Tony  Oxley e Tony Levin - divenuti via via autentiche rarità nel mercato dell'usato in vinile.
Assieme ai tre cd c'è un corposo dossier informativo curato da Colin Harper, che a parte annota: "The albums have been mastered from the original tapes and I’ve created a 17,000 word/56 page booklet telling the story of progressive British jazz in and around 1970, having trawled the entirety of Melody Maker issues for that year and specifically interviewed or corresponded with Peter Eden, John Taylor, Howard Riley and other musicians on the albums – John Surman, Norma Winstone, Barry Guy – plus other musicians whom Peter Eden produced in that period: Michael Gibbs, Mike Cooper, Chris Spedding. The booklet also includes a complete discography of Peter Eden productions spanning 1966-73. It was a lovely project to dive into!"

John Tilbury e Keith Rowe si misurano con gli intermittenti stimoli visivi e luminosi proposti dal videoartista norvegese Kjell Bjørgeengen sullo sfondo di alcune suggestioni letterarie remotamente desunte da Samuel Beckett. Lo fanno prendendosi tutto il tempo del mondo, e gli esiti - la sola parte audio - sono in un sontuoso box di quattro cd appena pubblicato dall'etichetta Sofa con il titolo Enough Still Not To Know.

Keith Rowe and John Tilbury are especially known from their work in the Scratch Orchestra and AMM with Cornelius Cardew. Tilbury is also known as one of the foremost interpreters of Morton Feldman's piano music. In recent years, both musicians have been working with texts by Samuel Beckett; Tilbury has made music and text-based performances of a number of the latest works by Beckett: Worsward Ho, Stirrings Still and What is the Word to mention a few. In Keith Rowe's work you can also find Beckett inspirations, where his music is totally stripped down, so that only the core remains. This influence, as well as Bjørgeengen's instructions about making a kind of music which musically and conceptually worked with dissolution and unification, combined with long sections of silence, has given surprising results. Sofa is very proud to be able to release this unique musical manifesto from these two legendary figures in experimental music.

This trio have been playing together for 9 years, sometimes expanding into quartets with the like of Noah Howard, John Russell, Joe McPhee, John Coxon & Paul Dunmall. Scritto con grande entusiasmo e un po' sull'onda di ricordi personali, ma suffragato da commenti e opinioni di molti diretti protagonisti: Steve Beresford, Martin Davidson, Lou Gare, Barry Guy, Paul Lytton, Evan Parker, Eddie Prévost, Victor Schonfield e Trevor Watts tra questi. In the late nineteenth century two facts conspired to change the face of music: the collapse of common practice tonality (which overturned the certainties underpinning the world of art music), and the invention of a revolutionary new form of memory, sound recording (which redefined and greatly empowered the world of popular music). A tidal wave of probes and experiments into new musical resources and new organisational practices ploughed through both disciplines, bringing parts of each onto shared terrain before rolling on to underpin a new aesthetics able to follow sound and its manipulations beyond the narrow confines of 'music'. This series tries analytically to trace and explain these developments, and to show how, and why, both musical and post-musical genres take the forms they do.

Con la pubblicazione di Was A Friend termina l'eccellente serie antologica di dieci titoli dedicata a Hugh Hopper, curata per Gonzo Multimedia da Mike King: "This is the final of a ten part series curated by the late Mike King, which cherrypicks some of the best and most intriguing items from Hugh Hopper's archive. Until he died a few years ago, Hugh Hopper, probably best known for his work with Soft Machine, was one of Britain's most versatile and innovative bass players, and this multi-album set confirms what a sad loss to both jazz and rock his passing was. Chi ha trovato esaurita l'edizione in vinile prodotta in tiratura limitata da Improjazz può ricorrere a quella in cd pubblicata da Gonzo Multimedia: One Night Stand, con Robert Wyatt, Dave MacRae, Gary Windo e Richard Sinclair dal vivo al Ronnie Scott's il 14 aprile 1973. Con una chiara dedica al compianto Michael King, che tanto ha fatto per far venire alla luce questo documento (e mille altri): "Dedicated to you, because you were listening".

Risale a venticinque anni fa la pubblicazione dello splendido album In This Life, che per primo fece conoscere gli statunitensi Thinking Plague agli appassionati delle avanguardie rock di mezzo mondo. Il nucleo centrale della formazione comprendeva Mike Johnson, Bob Drake e Susanne Lewis, e con loro Shane Hotle, Maria Moran, Mark Harris e Lawrence Haugseth, con il contributo di vari altri in studio (tra questi anche Fred Frith per un brano, Organism). Non che fosse la loro prima uscita discografica, ché anzi alle spalle il gruppo aveva una storia già ben movimentata, ma agli occhi di molti In This Life ne rappresentò il vero e proprio esordio. Con esso si inaugurarono tra l'altro le pubblicazioni in compact disc del catalogo ReR. Oggi ne esce un'edizione celebrativa a cura di Cuneiform Records, che ripristina ed espande testi e immagini del libretto storico, toglie i brani d'altra epoca - Possessed e Moonsongs - allora aggiunti come bonus, e affida a Mark Fuller l'incarico di ravvivare l'immagine sonora a partire dai master originali. A tutti, buon anniversario!

Dalle note della Cuneiform: "Originally released by the ReR label, this was the first album to really bring this superb US band to a wider audience. It was their last to feature singer Susanne Lewis, who lends a convincing air to the menace of some of the lyrics. It is also their last album to feature Bob Drake as a full member of the band. It comes back into print now for the first time in years. The two 'bonus tracks' of the ReR edition, which were taken from their first two albums and can be found in superior form on Early Plague Years, have been removed and this presents the album as the band originally planned it. The CD is now shorter, but much more focused this way and a more coherent, single work. It has been newly remastered by Mark Fuller from the original stereo mixdown master, as overseen by the band."
