Oltre ogni limite tra il Sacro, l'Umano e il Bestiale. Oltre alle capacità stesse della Nostra, da sempre altissime, di rappresentare il Terribile e l'Inenarrabile: così si annuncia per Diamanda Galás l'album Broken Gargoyles, anticipato da uno sconvolgente allestimento ad Hannover (Germania) l'estate scorsa e pronto tra pochi giorni per Intravenal Sound Operations.
Oltre ogni convenzione nella scelta di campo e nella pratica musicale: ONe_Orchestra New, l'ensemble orchestrale di una ventina di sole donne, trans e persone non binarie coordinato da Caroline Kraabel, inizia a diffondere i propri materiali. Su Bandcamp c'è ampia prova del concerto tenuto al Cafe Oto londinese lo scorso primo aprile, c'è anche la rilettura a distanza di uno storico brano dei Dog Faced Hermans (Keep Your Laws Off My Body) istigata dalle recenti decisioni della Corte Suprema statunitense in materia di diritto all'aborto legale, sicuro e accessibile. E c'è il tentativo di far circolare qualche buona idea, anche sul web, sottolineando la scelta della musica improvvisata collettiva quale metodo e luogo di accoglienza e di rispetto della pluralità e delle differenze: Khabat Abas, Dee Byrne, Isidora Edwards, Jacken Elswyth, Damsel Elysium, Kirsty Ferguson-Lewis, Lara Jones, Charlotte Keeffe, Shima Kobayashi, Caroline Kraabel, Sue Lynch, Greta Pistaceci, Shama Rahman, Cath Roberts, Emily Shapiro, Rosa Theodora, Sofia Vaisman-Maturana, Beibei Wang, Emi Watanabe, Livia Garcia.
Oltre ogni più rosea previsione, Joni Mitchell è tornata a esibirsi in pubblico con un intero set di suoi superclassici tra cui Carey, Help Me, A Case of You, Big Yellow Taxi, Amelia, Both Sides Now, The Circle Game e - lei in piedi, da sola, alla chitarra - Just Like This Train. E' accaduto domenica scorsa al Newport Folk Festival, trasformando un concerto in suo omaggio voluto da Brandi Carlile - quasi un'estensione della serie 'Joni Jam' tenuta finora in forma privata - in un emozionantissimo suo concerto. E chi se lo aspettava?
Altro box antologico assai desiderato quest'anno da fan e appassionati è quello frippiano di Exposures, che dopo lunga attesa si presenta tuttavia con refusi, sviste, doppioni e alcune lacune: errori e scelte imputabili in parte alla mole e all'eterogeneità dei documenti inclusi, non tali comunque da inficiare la bontà dell'opera, che tra mille frippertronics solitari raccolti nelle più disparate situazioni e importanti deviazioni dall'universo crimsoniano ha il merito di recuperare alcune vibranti prove della League of Gentlemen in quei suoi pochi mesi di vita nel 1980. Il rimedio, come già avvenne per i guai tecnici di Heaven & Earth, è proposto in downloading: "DGM/Panegyric are a small team preparing a boxed set with over 750 tracks, and regrettably accept that mistakes are made and some discrepancies are inevitable. This annoys, irritates and disappoints us. It is also part of the price we pay for offering an extensive boxed set of 32 discs at an affordable price. Some of the mistakes are made within the extended DGM/Panegyric Team, some appear mysteriously and inexplicably in the production process. Our apologies to all, and thanks to those who have written to us and posted online, pointing out the errors."

C'è ancora un po' da qui a novembre, ma lo stato dei lavori ha ampiamente superato la fase del semplice provino: Baker's Dozen dei Muffins, il box antologico più atteso dell'anno.
Giunge tra pochi giorni al termine l'attesa per il cd di Paintbox Jane, il lavoro siglato Westbrook & Company già più volte presentato dal vivo e incentrato sulla figura del pittore e scenografo francese Raoul Dufy (1877-1953), impersonato dal magnifico Tim Goodwin.

Per amor di cifra tonda, si ricordano a partire da oggi i trent'anni del magnifico Mike Westbrook Music Festival che si tenne dal 24 al 26 luglio 1992 in pieno centro cittadino a Catania, dopo la messa in forse per motivi di sicurezza e un rocambolesco cambio di sede nei giorni immmediatamente sucessivi alla strage di via D'Amelio. L'evento è stato richiamato in anni recenti nel doppio cd intitolato appunto Catania, dopo il ritrovamento - anch'esso abbastanza rocambolesco - di alcuni documenti audio relativi ai concerti delle tre serate.
Non che Mike abbia tempo di esser molto nostalgico, con tutto quello che ha in ballo in questo periodo, ma l'occasione di dedicarvi un pensiero si è presentata anche di recente parlando con Stuart Nicholson di Jazzwise: "Pompeo Benincasa and Marcello Leanza, very good friends of ours in Catania, in Sicily, where we had played various projects, amazingly offered to do a festival of just my own music – basically whatever I wanted to play. They came to London, we discussed it and I said, ‘Well, what I’d most like to do is get everybody together, not only the regular band, but a few guests and things like that', and their faces fell at the enormous cost of doing this. They went away and several months later came back, ‘Well, we’ve got the money!’ So then, a long period of preparation for three different nights of music! A huge undertaking.” "And a huge honour too", aggiunge Kate. Her husband had been close to tears thinking about it. But in the best tradition of prophets without honour, no similar commission to date has been undertaken in the UK. But even if it was proposed, where in his busy schedule would it be fitted in? “There’s always ongoing work with the small groups of one kind or another, and the big band, that carries on, and every now and again, in parallel with that, there’s been a major project of some kind. You have to adapt to situations and I think that’s what keeps us moving, really. It’s a response to the changing world, you have to find something that works now!”

Mike Westbrook interviene sul Notice Board per porgere omaggio a Barbara Thompson, scomparsa pochi giorni fa, in particolare ricordando della lunga carriera quale leader, compositrice e strumentista - sempre più intrecciata nel corso degli anni con quella del marito, Jon Hiseman - le collaborazioni intraprese nella realizzazione dei propri progetti e quelli di Kate, per esempio Good Friday 1663, Cuff Clout e Turner in Uri.
Scrive Mike: "It might seem that we inhabited completely different musical worlds. In fact we had a great deal in common. We followed each other’s bands and projects over the years, went to each other’s gigs and had many similar stories to tell. When Parkinsons hit we saw its effects and the positive way in which Barbara, and Jon confronted it head on. As she became gradually less able to play, Barbara threw herself into composition. She generated orchestral and choral works, saxophone quartets, a tuba concerto, until she became unable to use the computer. But she never gave up, writing her autobiography, and releasing a retrospective collection of her work on record."

A tonificare e rinforzare mira fin dal titolo anche l'album di Steve Cardenas, Ben Allison e Ted Nash che dall'infallibile ricettario della Nostra prova a trarre indicazioni: Healing Power-The Music of Carla Bley.
Chi tra i pianisti ha necessità di tonificare e rinforzare la mano destra dopo un qualche accidente troverà sicuro giovamento dagli esercizi suggeriti da una luminare in materia, Carla Bley: All About Me.
Tra chi alle biblioteche invisibili ha dedicato tempo e coerenti attenzioni c'è senz'altro Massimo Giuntoli, tradito appena - rimanendo tuttavia nell'ambito dell'Arcano & Imperscrutabile - dall'atto di affidarvi una copia tangibile e reale delle sue (splendide) Cronache.
Per i campioni dell'invisibile qualcuno ha immaginato un'intera biblioteca - finora inesistente, e tuttora in progress - di racconti brevi o brevissimi: tra i titoli più apprezzati Semolina, Die in Terror, Possessions, Suburban Bathers, Margaret Freeman e i superclassici Easter Woman e The Act of Being Polite.
Nell'ambito dell'incredibile maratona di Radio Art Zone è il turno di Chris Cutler: A Day in Other People’s Ears, ventiquattro ore di ascolto ininterrotto - pausa pranzo inclusa - fino a domani, con inizio oggi alle 14.00.
Scrive Cutler nella sua presentazione: "My intention with this broadcast is not to entertain or to educate or to encourage you to savour or objectify the everyday background sounds we so often overlook. That may happen. I hope it does. But that’s not my intention (and in any case plenty of other people are on that road). I rather mean this broadcast to be like an open window through which the mundane traffic of life can inconsequentially drift - to be attended to or not according to your mood and level of curiosity. At the same time it’s an opportunity to inhabit other people’s ears, or to drift from ear to ear and be elsewhere - not demonstrably but casually and for the most part only at the fringe of apperception. I hear Eric Satie shouting to his audience ‘Stop Listening!’ And likewise, the purpose of this programme is to murmur in the background, not wishing to be listened to, just colouring the air; perhaps inflecting your mood at a semi-conscious level and occasionally attracting closer attention - as a window facing onto other lives; a Sargasso Sea of orphan scraps of time; a fragment of the aleph, there to be listened to, half-listened to, overheard, ignored."

Mike Westbrook offre sul Notice Board un suo ricordo di Matthias Winckelmann (1941-2022), fondatore nel 1971 della celebre etichetta Enja e convinto sostenitore dei progetti westbrookiani - anche quelli più impegnativi, dal punto di vista organizzativo e finanziario - tanto da pubblicarne gli album per tutti gli anni Novanta: Off Abbey Road, le riprese di Bar Utopia e The Cortège, The Orchestra of Smith’s Academy, Glad Day e Chanson Irresponsable. Scrive Mike: "Time spent in Matthias’s company, in Munich, London or at some European festival, was always a great pleasure for Kate and me. We look back on our ten-year collaboration with him as one of the high points in our musical careers. Matthias was a great bear of a man. He viewed the follies and vicissitudes of the jazz world with a world-weary sense of humour. His love of the music never faltered. He was one of those wonderfully romantic fools who not only dream of a better world but actually do something to make it happen. He certainly made things happen for us and for our music."

Con una dedica alla memoria di Roberto Masotti (1947-2022) prende il via domani a Milano il Festival Ictus Festival voluto da Andrea Centazzo per celebrare i 45 anni della Ictus Records e i 50 anni della propria attività professionale. Nel corso di quattro giorni numerosi musicisti appartenenti a diverse generazioni e di diversa estrazione musicale - attivi principalmente nelle aree del jazz, improvvisazione e nuova musica - si alterneranno in varie formazioni in quattro set per sera, ciascuno intitolato a un relativo album in capo all'etichetta. Interverranno tra gli altri Steve Piccolo, Giancarlo Schiaffini, Carlo Actis Dato, Guido Mazzon, Steve Swell, Elliott Sharp, Elisabeth Harnik, Ellen Burr, Julia Miller e Sergio Armaroli. AMM e Spontaneous Music Ensemble sono al centro di una speciale iniziativa organizzata tra pochi giorni da David Toop al Cafe Oto londinese per festeggiare i quarant'anni della rivista The Wire. E gli ottanta di Eddie Prévost: The Tao of Amm X The Essence of Sme.
The first issue of The Wire was published in summer 1982. To mark its 40th anniversary, throughout July the magazine is hosting a series of live events in London, Bristol, Brighton, Manchester, Glasgow, Chicago, and online. For this Cafe Oto residency, The Wire’s publisher/director Tony Herrington has assembled a three-part programme based on the editorial philosophy that was encapsulated in the strapline on the cover of that first issue: Jazz, Improvised Music, And…
The first night of the residency is a homage to the continuing influence of two groups that have been crucial to the emergence and development of free improvised music in the UK since the 1960s: AMM and Spontaneous Music Ensemble. The night has been curated by David Toop, a key contributor to The Wire since the 1980s, and will feature David, Steve Beresford, Mandhira de Saram, Elaine Mitchener, Rie Nakajima, Maggie Nicols, Mark Wastell, and Thurston Moore in a three hour improvised performance. The musicians will play in a number of different combinations which will be interspersed with voice recordings of John Stevens, Trevor Watts, Eddie Prévost, Lou Gare, Cornelius Cardew, Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Victor Schonfield and others speaking about aspects of AMM and SME.
