Ashore is the first recording that June Tabor has focused entirely on maritime themes. The album has its genesis in the concert that Tabor performed for Topic Records’ seventieth anniversary in 2009, and as such it’s a record that gestures backwards and forwards in her body of work, revisiting some older material from a new perspective while also producing something that feels entirely vital and fresh. Spanning centuries, the selected songs transport the listener from the Caribbean to the Shetland Islands, from the mid-Atlantic to the Plymouth docks. The result is a richly atmospheric, beautifully sequenced and, indeed, immersive experience from an artist who continues to go from strength to strength.

The Konserthuset in Stockholm kicks off Steve Reich's 75th birthday year with Tonsättarfestivalen: Steve Reich, five days of concerts featuring the Kungliga Filharmonikern, Kroumata, Amadinda, Synergy Vocals, and the composer himself. The concerts will be broadcast on Swedish Radio P2. This week's festival is the first of a year's worth of events around the world honoring the composer's 75th birthday on October 3.

Jez Nelson presents the great South African drummer Louis Moholo-Moholo at a special concert in celebration of his 70th birthday. A founding member of legendary South African jazz groups The Blue Notes and The Brotherhood of Breath, Moholo-Moholo became a influential figure in the British jazz scene when he came to London in exile from apartheid during the mid-sixties. This concert sees him in a rare reunion duo with pianist Keith Tippett and a full ensemble including Jason Yarde, Henry Lowther and John Edwards. He also talks to Jez Nelson looking back over his eventful career.

Seventh Records annuncia la pubblicazione a giorni di un cd del trio Alien - Michel Graillier (piano), Alby Cullaz (basso) e Christian Vander (batteria) - contenente registrazioni effettuate dal vivo nel 1983 ad Antibes, in un concerto dedicato a McCoy Tyner, e in studio qualche anno dopo, nel 1988. Il documento, prezioso e inedito, esce anche in segno di omaggio ai due compagni di Vander, scomparsi tra il 1998 e il 2003.
"A rare witness to the memory of an exceptional trio, this album combines a live performance recorded from the core of the crowd in Antibes, in 1983 with long extracts from fully unreleased studio sessions. In February 1988 the trio entered the studio to work on an album, but the project never got off the ground. Following the death of Alby Cullaz in 1998, and Michel Graillier in 2003, we thought these recordings would never see the light of day. Time, however, has passed by and the moment has come to share both the moving intimacy of the studio sessions and the incredible energy of this unique concert; not only this, to honour the memory of these great musicians, such dear friends of ours who passed away before their time".

Mopomoso was founded in 1991 by guitarist John Russell and pianist, trumpeter and composer Chris Burn to promote improvised music and where applicable its relationship to other forms of contemporary music making. Since then we have presented over 300 concerts and a number of special events and workshops. Practitioners come from backgrounds in jazz, rock, folk, classical, electronic, world and computer generated music, with instrumentation covering everything from traditional to invented instruments. There have also been occasional collaborations with poetry, dance, film and performance art. We hold a passionate belief that improvised music, sometimes called free music or free improvisation offers many exciting opportunities both to players and listeners alike.

Gary Lucas, featured guitar soloist and member of the final edition of Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band, celebrates the career of visionary American maverick genius Don Van Vliet a/k/a Captain Beefheart, who changed the face of music forever over a career spanning a dozen brilliant albums, from 1967's groundbreaking "Safe as Milk" through 1969's radical "Trout Mask Replica" and finishing with 1982's uncompromising "Ice Cream for Crow". A legendary composer/vocalist/songwriter/bandleader/poet/sculptor and painter, Don Van Vliet has been honored over the years by everyone from Johnny Rotten and Joe Strummer to Bob Dylan, Bono, David Lynch and Anton Corbijn - but is still relatively (and unfairly) unknown to the public at large. During the symposium Gary Lucas shows rare archival footage of the band, spin unreleased tracks, project slides of Van Vliet's paintings and drawings, discusses the history of the group and many of the great musicians who came through the ranks of The Magic Band, and illustrates Van Vliet's quirky and idiosyncratic methodologies and techniques with a live solo guitar performance.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has named Richard Thompson to the 2011 Honours List as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire. The honour will be bestowed during an Investiture ceremony at St. James's Palace at a future date, yet to be announced. The OBE was instituted by King George V in 1917, as recognition of those who have made significant non-military contributions to the British Empire. Britain's honours are bestowed twice a year by the Monarch at New Year's and on Her Majesty's official birthday in June but recipients are selected by committees of civil servants from nominations made by the government and the public.

Peter Blegvad was in town so he and I simultaneously recited “The Dust Blows Forward And The Dust Blows Back” into the telephone from down the street whilst the All-Stars found something to hang their hats on and improvised a soundtrack. Peter and I never heard what they played. Nice. Later in the show, the chairs were arranged, and this song unfurled, most beautifully. I got to sing Beefheart's “Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles” with this month’s All-Stars. What a blast!"

As the country continues to engage in foreign wars, Phil Ochs: There But For Fortune is a timely tribute to an unlikely American hero whose music is as relevant today as it was in the 1960s. Ochs, a folk singing legend, was moved by the conviction that he and his music would change the world. He loved his country and fought to honor it, in both song and action. Wielding only a battered guitar, a clear voice and the quiver of his razor sharp songs, he tirelessly fought the good fight for peace and justice throughout his short life.
