This is a great recording of the duo from the time they were building up a new repertoire for a second album which, as we now know, was finished but remained unreleased during Phil’s lifetime, and only came out in 2022 thanks to Herm’s effort of getting the recordings transferred from the now obsolete ADAT format and mixed for release. The setlist included a number of pieces that would appear on Double Up 2, like Fred’s tribute to his father (also named Fred), Song for Big Fred, and Phil’s Adagio, but also two that would not, Phil’s Untitled Ballad and Fred’s Waltz for Morgan, inspired by his older daughter, of which Fred recorded a very different version (featuring another Softs alumni, Ric Sanders on violin) on Tom Leary’s 1997 album Calm Waters. I believe this is the first time the Miller-Baker version has been heard."
