Per il concerto di debutto al londinese Cafe Oto, lo scorso aprile, si unì per qualche numero anche Lol Coxhill, ma Mathilde 253 è in verità un trio: Charles Hayward (batteria, percussioni, melodica), Han-earl Park (chitarra) e Ian Smith (tromba e flicorno). La registrazione di quella sera è in un cd che esce in questi giorni per l'etichetta Slam Productions: un'anteprima è in Vimeo.
Born out of an opportunity to explore the spontaneous mashup of avant-rock, African-American creative musics, European free improvisation and noise, Mathilde 253 (Charles Hayward, Han-earl Park and Ian Smith) debuted at Cafe Oto in April 2010. Featuring special guest Lol Coxhill, the ensemble weaved a performance of physical virtuosity and humorous sound poetics; a patchwork of restraint, subtlety and recklessness. A playful collision of personal, social and musical histories, Mathilde 253 is a site where tradition and idiom are not straightjackets nor limitations, but playgrounds for real-time (re)inventions and (re)configurations.

L'edizione del 2009 del festival Unlimited, curata da Ikue Mori assieme ai responsabili del centro culturale Kulturverein Waschaecht a Wels, è oggetto di un film documentario presentato pochi giorni fa nella cittadina austriaca sede della rassegna; presto sarà disponibile anche in dvd, e se ne può chiedere copia contattando direttamente l'autore, Pavel Borodin.

Un saluto a Captain Beefheart lo manda anche il team di cantori e letterati di Radio Free Song Club, interpretando con brio la sua Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles (prendendola da Clear Spot, del 1972, o forse dalla colonna sonora di The Big Lebowski, del 1998). Scrive Nicholas Hill: "When Don Van Vliet passed a few days prior to the recording of our twelfth show we had to attack a couple of his songs. Peter Blegvad was in town so he and I simultaneously recited “The Dust Blows Forward And The Dust Blows Back” into the telephone from down the street whilst the All-Stars found something to hang their hats on and improvised a soundtrack. Peter and I never heard what they played. Nice. Later in the show, the chairs were arranged, and this song unfurled, most beautifully. I got to sing Beefheart's “Her Eyes Are A Blue Million Miles” with this month’s All-Stars. What a blast!"
