The Bergisch-Brandenburgisches Quartett (BBQ) was formed in 1980 in Rostock, East Germany, when three of the most radical and riotous members of the West German free music scene - reedist and accordionist Rüdiger Carl, percussionist Sven-Åke Johansson and Hans Reichel on violin and his modified ‘strange guitars’ - first played as a quartet with East German saxophonist Ernst-Ludwig Petrowsky. A rare example of a working band with members from both sides of the wall, during its lifetime the BBQ left only one recorded document, a studio LP on Amiga, the pop and jazz sublabel of the GDR state-run Deutsche Schallplatten Berlin. Neither pure fire music nor orthodox free improvisation, the four members of the BBQ shared an all-embracing aesthetic where quotes and jokes sat comfortably alongside radical extended techniques and sonic experiments.

Subito si pensa a Elton Dean, tanta è l'abitudine, invece è Theo Travis a tracciare al sassofono le linee di Slightly All The Time (brano di Mike Ratledge tra i più celebri, su Third, 1970) nella versione degli attuali Soft Machine - Travis, John Etheridge, Fred Baker e Asaf Sirkis - che My Only Records ha voluto proporre su singolo in vinile: si intitola (Slightly) Slightly All the Time ed esce a febbraio in coppia con un brano preso invece da Harry Beckett, The Dew At Dawn.

Uno speciale doppio concerto, pomeridiano e serale, si tiene oggi a Chicago in onore di Peter Brötzmann (1941-2023), con la partecipazione di molti dei musicisti d'area che hanno fatto parte dei progetti del compianto sassofonista a partire dai primi anni Novanta, il più celebre e longevo dei quali appunto il Chicago Tentet: ci saranno Mats Gustafsson, Ken Vandermark, Joe McPhee, Jeb Bishop, Jason Adasiewicz, Fred Lonberg-Holm, Michael Zerang e Hamid Drake oltre al figlio di Peter, Caspar Brötzmann, e molti altri in distinti momenti e diversi raggruppamenti. L'evento è promosso da John Corbett in alleanza con Constellation nella sede che fu il Viaduct Theater e anticipa di un paio di mesi un'iniziativa analoga che si terrà a Londra nel febbraio 2024. One of the landmark figures in improvised music, German saxophonist and clarinetist Peter Brötzmann maintained a special relationship with the Chicago music community. First performing in the city in the late 1980s, Brötzmann initially worked in small ensemble settings, duos and trios, often with drummer Hamid Drake. In 1996, he assembled the nucleus of the Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet, an all-star band that worked consistently around the world for more than 15 years. Brötzmann's last appearance in Chicago was in a quartet setting featuring vibraphonist Jason Adasiewicz, the same group with whom Brötzmann played his final concerts before his untimely passing in June. As a memorial to Brötzmann, with particular attention to his Chicago connection, this event will feature all members of the original Peter Brötzmann Chicago Tentet, Jason Adasiewicz, and several special guests. Two full concerts will include four sets each, with various groupings drawn from the overall participants, including working groups DKV Trio, Ensemble Redux (playing Brötzmann) and Survival Unit III, as well as several world premier groupings. Rare footage of Brötzmann will be on view.

Tra i titoli di interesse disponibili presso ReR non può sfuggire This Strange Place, nuovo affascinante cd dei Remote Viewers nella consolidata formazione a quintetto con David Petts, Adrian Northover, Sue Lynch, Caroline Kraabel e John Edwards. Scrive Cutler: "Thoughtful, sometimes provisional, compositions that take their final form as a combination of midi conversions of the original compositional data, electronic re-composition - orchestrated and augmentated by the real played instruments of the ensemble. A sucessful experiment, I think: mysterious, redolant and intriguing." Non c'è invece il loro altro bel lavoro di quest'anno, Inside The Blizzard, realizzato lo scorso inverno con la partecipazione al pianoforte di Rosa Theodora. In molti abbiamo istintivamente collegato la scomparsa pochi giorni fa di Martin Davidson (1942-2023), fondatore dell'etichetta Emanem e curatore di molte pubblicazioni Cadillac, a quella di Jost Gebers (1940-2023), responsabile della Fmp, avvenuta appena un paio di mesi fa. Figure entrambe assai importanti in un ambito che quest'anno ha già registrato molte dolorose perdite tra i suoi protagonisti. Ciao Martin!

Curiosità e forte attesa accompagnano il ritorno di Bob Drake a una nuova stagione di trasmissioni in diretta streaming dalla sua sede di Caudeval (Francia): in particolare oggi, dato che verranno rivelati sia il contenuto dell'album The Room in the Tower appena terminato sia qualche dettaglio nascosto tra le registrazioni multitraccia appena prima del risultato definitivo. L'edizione del trentennale era andata subito esaurita, questa dei quarant'anni in formato redux - immutata nei contenuti, più alleggerita nella confezione ma parimenti indispensabile - dovrebbe venire incontro a chi ne era rimasto sprovvisto: Cassiber 1982-1992.
In 1982 Cassiber crashed into the Deutsche Neue Welle. Founded by Heiner Goebbels, Alfred Harth, Christoph Anders and Chris Cutler, they fused experimental rock, fringe jazz, punk, pop, plunderphonics, improvisation and musique concrete into a complex form of studio - and then concert - composition that was unique in mashing experimental form with a risky and expressionist mode of execution. In content and aesthetics, Cassiber tracked and anticipated the political and technological changes of its times, shifting, over its 10 years of existence, from the high stakes energy of the earlier releases to the more composed and complex studio works of its later years. Most impressively, Cassiber opened up song form by abandoning, extending or crashing sideways into it - and by creating unlikely structures from a combination of noise, libido, high musicality, dramaturgy and cultural debris.
Alle attività del Circ.a rimanda anche la recente pubblicazione (in digitale) di un concerto degli statunitensi 5uu's tratto dal loro primissimo tour europeo di fine inverno-inizio primavera del 1995, che per la sua parte italiana fu organizzato e sostenuto appunto dal neonato circuito di diffusione di musiche eterodosse presente in varie forme sul territorio nazionale e che in quell'occasione vide coinvolte le sedi di Torino, Schio (Vi), Roma, Montepulciano (Si) e Bologna. Il documento scelto in via ufficiale da Cuneiform Records proviene dal concerto dell'8 aprile al centro autogestito Autonomes Kulturzentrum Würzburg in Germania, ed è accompagnato da un ricco - anche se non molto accurato - diario di viaggio composto a vario titolo dai protagonisti di allora, Dave Kerman, Bob Drake, Mike Johnson e Scott Brazieal, con l'ineguagliabile Maggie Thomas: Live at A.K.W. Würzburg, Germany April 8, 1995.

Due anni fa a inizio ottobre si tennero a Bristol (Regno Unito) due giornate fitte di incontri e concerti, coordinate da Kevin Figes, interamente dedicate alla memoria del compianto Keith Tippett (1947-2020), con la partecipazione di una quarantina di musicisti raggruppati in dieci diversi momenti musicali. Il programma del secondo giorno, il 2 ottobre 2021, è ora documentato in video in una pubblicazione in Blu-ray prodotta da Pig Records: A Celebration of Keith Tippett. Ci sono i concerti di Matthew Bourne con Glen Leach e di Julie Tippetts con Maggie Nichols, l'esecuzione in settetto di From Granite to Wind, uno specialissimo Double Dreamtime, Paul Dunmall in quartetto con Paul Rogers, Liam Noble e Mark Sanders e la festosa conclusione affidata alla Keith Tippett Celebration Orchestra, forte di diciotto elementi. La parte audio è disponibile anche via Bandcamp.

Nuovo appuntamento londinese questa sera con la magnifica Band of Bands di Mike Westbrook, nella stessa formazione che qualche giorno fa ha infiammato la platea dell'Arts Centre di Ashburton: Mike con Kate Westbrook, Chris Biscoe, Pete Whyman, Karen Street, Marcus Vergette e Coach York, dal vivo al Jazz Cafe Posk in Hammersmith. Già si sa che il gruppo tornerà ad esibirsi a Londra l'anno prossimo a primavera, se non prima: all'epoca sarà pronto l'album di debutto, per la realizzazione del quale sono ora in corso prenotazioni e sottoscrizioni.

Più di uno dovette allora rinunciare ad assistervi, per varie ragioni, ma ora lo potrà ritrovare trasmesso da Radiotre Suite Jazz: è il magnifico concerto dell'Artchipel Orchestra con Jonathan Coe tenuto il 12 giugno 2022 al Torino Jazz Festival. Sul palco del Conservatorio Giuseppe Verdi c'erano Marco Fior, Alberto Bolettieri, Rudi Manzoli, Andrea Ciceri, Germano Zenga, Rosarita Crisafi, Alberto Zappalà, Carlo Nicita, Naima Faraò, Francesca Sabatino, Giuseppe Gallucci, Luca Gusella, Paola Tezzon, Luca Pedeferri, Gianluca Alberti, Stefano Lecchi, Lorenzo Gasperoni e Jonathan Coe in persona, con l'esaltante direzione di Ferdinando Faraò.
