Mark Wastell chiude con soddisfazione un anno impegnativo e importante per la sua Confront Recordings pubblicando la registrazione di un concerto tenuto alla Hundred Years Gallery pochi giorni fa - prima che a Londra le cose si aggravassero sul fronte della pandemia - dal longevo e mutevolissimo ensemble The Seen (Edition 26:Live) e rilanciando per inizio febbraio due giorni di concerti presso il Cafe Oto in omaggio al compianto Simon H. Altro celebre album che nel 2021 compie cinquant'anni è Blue di Joni Mitchell, cui spesso di questa stagione si ricorre per estrarne River a uso delle proprie playlist natalizie. Per cambiare, ma solo di poco, stavolta si possono considerare due altre versioni del brano, finora inedite, presenti nel secondo prezioso volume di materiali d'archivio, The Reprise Years (1968-1971).

Di anni ne compie invece cinquanta il celebre 200 Motels di Frank Zappa, festeggiato come si deve con una ricca edizione speciale in sei cd piena zeppa di materiali audio aggiuntivi ed esclusivi, oltre a libro, poster, nuove note informative e gadget vari per i fan.

Fully authorized by the Zappa Trust and produced by Ahmet Zappa and Zappa Vaultmeister Joe Travers, the expansive 200 Motels 50th Anniversary Edition is a definitive super deluxe six-disc box set of the beloved, yet hard to find, soundtrack that has been lovingly assembled in celebration of the film and soundtrack’s golden anniversary. The six-disc set is housed in a 64-page hardcover book in a handsome 12” x 12” slipcase. The packaging replicates the original booklet updated with revealing new liner notes from Pamela Des Barres, Ruth Underwood and Joe Travers, as well as Patrick Pending’s essay from the 1997 reissue, and is chock full of motion picture artwork, stills and images, from the film and its making, many which have never been seen before. This must-have collector’s release also includes a custom “200 Motels” keychain and Do-No-Disturb motel door hanger and a full-size replica of the original movie poster. Years in the making, all the audio was meticulously identified and transferred over several years as Travers dug through the Vault to create a new high resolution 96K/24B digital patchwork stereo master from the original analog tapes. The Vault material was mastered by John Polito in 2021.

Discs 1 and 2 feature the remastered soundtrack with the second half of the second disc consisting of demos and demo outtakes; two of the many highlights from these sessions include unreleased alt mixes and alt takes of the Chunga’s Revenge tunes, “Road Ladies” and “Tell Me You Love Me.” Discs 3 and 4 contain the “Dialog Protection Reels,” which reveal an early version of the movie, while Disc 5 and 6 present unreleased outtakes, alternates and historical nuggets sequenced in the order of the original shooting script, the way Zappa originally envisioned before he ran into time and budget constraints. These illuminating discs reveal Zappa’s original intent for the film for the first time.

Grazie a Chris Topley, che ne ha predisposto la versione in download, torna disponibile il ricercatissimo secondo album della Mike Westbrook Brass Band, Goose Sauce, uscito in LP nel 1978 su Original Records e ripreso poi in cd nel 2007 da Birdsong per il solo mercato giapponese. In formazione c'erano Mike e Kate Westbrook, Phil Minton, Dave Chambers, Paul Rutherford, George Khan e Trevor Tomkins; le registrazioni vennero effettuate in studio sul finire del 1977 e l'inizio del 1978, a ridosso della storica alleanza con Henry Cow e Frankie Armstrong che produsse dal vivo i concerti dell'Orckestra - alcuni anche in Italia - e gettò le basi per le successive avventure con Georgie Born e Lindsay Cooper.

Ricorda Mike: "Goose Sauce was the Brass Band's 'difficult' second album. Yet listening four decades later I realise what a lively and creative time this was for the band. Since the original five - Phil, Kate, Dave, Paul and me - we had added saxophonist George Khan and, controversially, percussionist Trevor Tomkins. The experience of performing in a variety of situations, European touring and some bizarre collaborations had strengthened our nerve. The sound of the band had become denser, heavier. Where the 1975 album For the Record had no fewer than eighteen tracks, the pieces on Goose Sauce were fewer, longer. The repertoire was still very much thrown together. We had not yet arrived at the integrated jazz cabaret of Mama Chicago. Goose Sauce was an ad hoc mix. Anything that worked, that fired up or amused the band was included. So political song, street music, cod folk tunes, jazz and theatre classics, circus and panto music, all went into the pot, along with lashings of improvisation."

E tornano disponibili presso Burning Shed i due capitoli della storia alternativa degli amatissimi Hatfield and the North pubblicati nel 2005 e 2006, Hatwise Choice e Hattitude. Chi li ha persi a suo tempo non lo rifaccia ora. Le ristampe contengono anche i libretti originali, il primo dei quali si apre con una nota personale di Jonathan Coe.

Hatwise Choice is the band's own selection of unreleased material culled from their tape archive. It consists of over 68 minutes of live concert tapes and radio recordings, the latter mastered from first generation sources. The gig tapes show aspects of Hatfield's music never before heard on record - on stage, the tight control of the group's studio work is replaced by a looser, improvisatory approach. Flashes of humour give way to frightening electronic landscapes, interspersed with extended arrangements of the band's compositions and occasional moments of utter musical madness. 

Hattitude gives a rare insight into the band's live performances at a time of rapid musical development, charting their evolution from early gigs (including one recorded in the swirly psychedelic acoustics of Amsterdam's Paradiso club) through to the more sophisticated arrangements of 1975. En route there are moments of surreal humour and instrumental virtuosity, coupled with instances of sheer sonic savagery which reveal the extent of the madness in the group's method. Virtually all the material is from first generation audio sources which have been digitally restored, ensuring good sound quality throughout.

"If our First Nature lies in the wild and lonely places, somewhere along the way we recognized our Second Nature of art and invention. The pieces on this album, some of which stem from work on music for emotive environmental films, owe much to this First Nature. I have a strong sense of location for them all. E' la nuova gradita proposta di Dave Newhouse via Bandcamp: "Daughter of Paris is a composite of old material taken from a past project of mine titled Cyclorama (the last album from a series called Hand-Systems Tapes that I put out in the late 80s / early 90s - The Muffins’ Secret Signals albums came from this tape series) and new compositions that I wrote and recorded between October and November, 2021.

Dagli archivi di Veit Stauffer esce invece la registrazione di un programma della radio svizzera DRS 2, che da qualche anno si chiama Radio SRF 2 Kultur, interamente dedicato a Lindsay Cooper: risale al maggio 1982, un episodio della serie Neue Horizonte comprendente interventi della sola Cooper - alcuni basati su registrazioni effettuate sul campo il giorno stesso, a Berna - e una lunga improvvisazione collettiva. Nella stessa collezione, volendo, sono da sentire Palais Schaumburg e Pere Ubu insieme a Heidelberg nel 1981, Family Fodder a Berna sempre nel 1981, The Raincoats a Londra nel 1983, e poi Malaria, Kevin Coyne e Terje Rypdal tra gli altri. Ci fu una volta che ai Pere Ubu venne in soccorso il chitarrista degli MC5, Wayne Kramer: accadde il 13 settembre 1998 a conclusione del festival Fall of the Magnetic Empire, curato da David Thomas presso il club newyorkese Knitting Factory. Invece Caroline Kraabel fa rivivere la Londra metropolitana del primo severo lockdown dello scorso anno, montando alcune incredibili scene riprese in bicicletta con il suo smartphone e reinventandone creativamente l'audio secondo i principi di imitazione e contraddizione: ne esce un gioiello filmico e sonoro, London 26 and 28 March 2020: imitation: inversion, candidato ai premi dell'Ivors Composer Awards la settimana prossima. Simon Fisher Turner fa rivivere il celebre e straziante Blue di Derek Jarman (1942-1994) in occasione della Giornata mondiale contro l'AIDS e in concomitanza con la retrospettiva Dead Souls Whisper che in questi giorni sta proponendo per la prima volta nella capitale francese alcuni capolavori del compianto cineasta e attivista gay: Sebastiane, La tempesta, Jubilee e The Last of England. Due le presentazioni dal vivo curate in prima persona dal musicista, autore di gran parte delle musiche del film originale, una più letterale (Blue, con Lili Reynaud Dewaret, Yves-Noël Genod, David Sanson e Rainier Lericolais) e una più sperimentale (Deep Blue, con Klara Lewis, Lucy Railton, Lili Kim e Black Sifichi). Oggi e domani a Parigi presso la Bourse de Commerce, Pinault Collection.

Dans le cadre de Derek Jarman - Dead Souls Whisper (1986-1993) au Centre d’art contemporain d’Ivry le Crédac, et en coréalisation avec le Festival d’Automne à Paris, la Bourse de Commerce Pinault Collection présente deux soirées en hommage à Derek Jarman (1942–1994) et à son film Blue (1993). Le compositeur britannique Simon Fisher Turner, complice de Derek Jarman et principal compositeur de la bande sonore de Blue, propose deux réinterprétations vivantes: Blue et Deep Blue. 

Le 1er décembre, journée mondiale de lutte contre le sida, une première interprétation du script complet de Blue sera lue par l'artiste Lili Reynaud Dewaret le comédien Yves-Noël Genod, accompagnés du musicien anglais Simon Fisher Turner, du pianiste français David Sanson et du plasticien et musicien français Rainier Lericolais.  

Le 2 décembre, une interprétation live électronique et expérimentale du film, Deep Blue, sera proposée par Simon Fisher Turner avec la compositrice suédoise Klara Lewis et la violoncelliste britannique Lucy Railton accompagnés d’une lecture libre du script de Blue par Lili Kim et l’artiste et écrivain américain Black Sifichi.
