Hardy Fox, un ex dei Residents, lascia con un canto d'amore, forse il suo ultimo: Rilla Contemplates Love.

Hardy Fox used to be composer for The Residents. He left the group when he didn't feel fit enough for touring. Since then, he has released many albums under the name Charles Bobuck, switching to his real name Hardy Fox when his albums became more personal. The first, self-titled and also known under the name Heart, is a study of the young Hardy Fox, an album about Love. The second, Nachtzug is about his last days touring with The Residents. After a break from recording, Hardy Fox is now back with a concept album about a gorilla: "A few years ago a study was done by scientists who were really interested by the idea of how gorillas think. Work was being encouraged by the success of sign language with a gorilla named Koko, who unfortunately recently died. The new research was investigating if they could get information by working with computers directly taking information from the mind of a friendly gorilla. Rilla. Hardy Fox did not get the actual results, but did get inspired by his own mind as it was sent into the imagination of what a gorilla might think.".

Mike Cooper presenta domani sera al Cafe Oto londinese il nuovo progetto Tropical Gothic con due alleati di lusso, Clive Bell e Sylvia Hallett: "Tropical Gothic examines Gothic within a specific geographical area of ‘the South’… as well as transnational movements of the Gothic… Tropical Gothic includes, but is by no means limited to, a reflection on a region where European colonial powers fought intensively against indigenous populations and against each other for control of land and resources. Dopo i preziosi volumi dedicati a Mike Westbrook e Gordon Beck la rinata etichetta Turtle Records torna ad aprire i propri storici archivi per volgere l'attenzione a Michael Gibbs, recuperando registrazioni inedite di due sue distinte formazioni dal vivo a Belfast e Lancaster nel 1969 prima del debutto discografico. Ci sono tra gli altri Kenny Wheeler, Alan Skidmore, Ray Warleigh, Tony Roberts, Chris Spedding, il quartetto di Gary Burton (con Steve Swallow), John Surman, Mike Osborne, Henry Lowther, Jack Bruce e John Marshall: Festival 69.

Michael Gibbs is a composer, conductor, arranger and producer as well as a trombonist and keyboardist, known for his collaborations with Gary Burton, and for his ability to utilize rock elements in orchestral jazz. Festival '69 is an historic concert performance, previously unreleased, providing unique insight into Gibbs' artistry prior to his recording career proper (debut album released in 1970). Assembling a big band boasting the cream of contemporary British Jazz, Gibbs connected for this one concert with pioneering vibraphonist Gary Burton and his Quartet. The concert recording, over 90 minutes long, captures the Gary Burton Quartet performing classic original compositions by Gibbs, Burton and the Quartet's Steve Swallow at the mainstream music festival held in Belfast, November 1969 (1967's headliner was Jimi Hendrix). Gibbs' band for the festival featured Chris Pyne, Kenny Wheeler, Trevor Barber, Alan Skidmore, Ray Warleigh, Tony Roberts and Chris Spedding. As a bonus Turtle Records is able to offer from Gibbs' own archive a 55-minute recording of his Big Band earlier the same year at Lancaster University. Here, the band line-up comprised John Surman, Mike Osborne, Alan Skidmore, Henry Lowther, Roderick Toal, Chris Pyne, Dick Hart, Frank Ricotti, Mike Pyne, Phillip Lee, Jack Bruce and John Marshall. While the Lancaster recording circulated online in MP3 form in the 90s, this audio has been carefully mastered from non-compressed files and restored for the first time, under Mike Gibbs' supervision, to its original speed and at the original pitch. This package further boasts a major essay on Gibbs' early career, by John McLaughlin biographer Colin Harper, with fresh interview material from Gibbs enhanced with photos from Gibbs' own archive and contemporary cuttings.

Dopo precedenti disamine di strumenti esotici e arcani, l'eccellente serie Probes curata da Chris Cutler per Ràdio Web MACBA presso il Museo d'Arte Contemporanea di Barcellona si arricchisce di un nuovo affascinante capitolo interamente dedicato al repertorio contemporaneo di composizioni ed esecuzioni per pianoforti giocattolo, scatole armoniche, piccoli oggetti sonori, richiami per uccelli e palloncini: "In Probes #24, toys, music boxes and balloons find new roles in contemporary compositions, pop performances, film scores and jazz improvisation, as composers explore alternative acoustic sources for extended, non-electronic, sounds."

In the late nineteenth century two facts conspired to change the face of music: the collapse of common practice tonality (which overturned the certainties underpinning the world of art music), and the invention of a revolutionary new form of memory, sound recording (which redefined and greatly empowered the world of popular music). A tidal wave of probes and experiments into new musical resources and new organisational practices ploughed through both disciplines, bringing parts of each onto shared terrain before rolling on to underpin a new aesthetics able to follow sound and its manipulations beyond the narrow confines of ‘music’. This series tries analytically to trace and explain these developments, and to show how, and why, both musical and post-musical genres take the forms they do.

Nuova opportunità a Londra di avvicinarsi - e di immergervisi - a uno dei più importanti lavori di Christian Marclay degli ultimi anni, The Clock: in visione alla Tate Modern fino a gennaio 2019.

'The Clock' is constructed out of moments in cinema when time is expressed or when a character interacts with a clock, watch or just a particular time of day. Marclay has excerpted thousands of these fragments and edited them so that they flow in real time. While 'The Clock' examines how time, plot and duration are depicted in cinema, the video is also a working timepiece that is synchronised to the local time zone. At any moment, the viewer can look at the work and use it to tell the time. Yet the audience watching 'The Clock' experiences a vast range of narratives, settings and moods within the space of a few minutes, making time unravel in countless directions at once. Even while 'The Clock' tells the time, it ruptures any sense of chronological coherence.
'The Clock' plays with how audiences experience narrative in cinema, examining the conventions and devices through which filmmakers create a persuasive illusion of duration. When watching a film, an audience is removed from normal time and swept up in a new register that corresponds to the narrative at hand. 'The Clock' transforms this condition of cinema: time, in this case, corresponds precisely to the actual time beyond the work. The audience will have the peculiar awareness of experiencing a fictional event, or countless events, at what appears to be the same time as when they watch it.

Farà parte dell'album What Light There Is Tells Us Nothing in uscita tra poche settimane per la newyorkese Temporary Residence Records. Intanto Clouds from Cuckooland, fortemente derivato dall'album di Robert Wyatt Cuckooland, fa ottima mostra di sé in un video disponibile in Vimeo. Così scrive l'autore, Janek Schaefer: "Clouds from Cuckooland was commissioned for an exhibition about the legend of the Canterbury Scene, and in particular the work of Robert Wyatt. I was invited to create an installation from his Cuckooland album, which I evaporated into a 21 minute cloud of sound that floats around and around the gallery. Using 3 x FM transmitters I broadcast the composition to 3 groups of radios set out on a vinyl circle, accompanied by lasers, feathers, mirrors and glitter. Commissioned by Artistic Director Matt Wright for the Sounds New Festival, Canterbury 2014."

Adele Schmidt e Jose Zegarra Holder, che molti protagonisti attuali e storici del Rock in Opposition hanno intervistato e filmato nelle loro precedenti produzioni video, sono al lavoro per completare il prossimo capitolo (in due parti) della serie Romantic Warriors: si intitolerà Krautrock e sarà un ritratto della scena rock d'avanguardia in Germania - e in particolare a Colonia, Düsseldorf, Amburgo, Berlino e Monaco - tra gli anni Sessanta e Settanta e dei loro principali alfieri. Presenti nel primo volume: Can, Faust, Cluster, Neu!, Floh de Cologne e Kraftwerk.

Developed in Germany in the late 60s and early 70s, and largely divorced from the traditional rock influences of British and American bands, the so-called Krautrock genre contributed to the evolution of electronic music, techno and hip hop, ambient music, minimalism and avant-garde. In order to organize the large amount of material that we filmed over the past three years, we have divided Romantic Warriors IV into two parts. Part 1 focuses on the bands in the Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Hamburg regions, and Part 2 (to be released in late 2019) will be focusing on bands of the Berlin and Munich scenes. Both documentaries are feature lengths stand alone films. Through interviews with "Krautrock" musicians, clips of live performances, photographs, and current/archival footage, the films will bring you onto a journey of remarkable times of musical innovation that has shaped the decades after.

Prende l'avvio domani l'undicesima edizione del festival Rock in Opposition France Event con tre giorni intensi di concerti e incontri nella tradizionale sede della Maison de la Musique di Cap Découvert a Carmaux. I recenti lavori di Mike Westbrook (Starcross Bridge, Hat Hut Records) e Kate Westbrook (Granite, Westbrook Records) sono entrambi disponibili tramite il sito WestbrookJazz, dove sono presentati con molte informazioni aggiuntive, recensioni, immagini, estratti audio e video. C'è in particolare un toccante ricordo di Lou Gare in uno scritto di Mike per lo Smith's Academy Notice Board, in riferimento al suo nuovo album solista. E torna disponibile, stavolta tramite Bandcamp, l'album che nel 1989 segnalò la collaborazione tra Anthony Braxton e il Rova Saxophone Quartet avviata qualche tempo prima: The Aggregate, in origine per Sound Aspects.

Ricorda Larry Ochs: "Rova’s prospects for launching itself into the late 1970s indy jazz-improv scene were increased exponentially by the early advocacy of Anthony Braxton. Substantiated legend has it that AB was in the (then West German) office of the Moers Festival of New Jazz - a preeminent music festival in Europe at the time - in May 1978 when he heard a cassette of a Rova demo. Excited by what he was hearing, Braxton exclaimed that the festival’s executive director, Burkhard Hennen, should hire us! Around October that year, Larry Ochs was surprised by a letter of invitation to not only play Moers, but to do a Moers-sponsored tour of Europe. Thus began Rova’s European connection, and our fellowship with Anthony Braxton - one of the true innovators in modern music. When Braxton came to the west coast to teach at Mills College, Rova had the opportunity to record with him. Although the 5 of us had done some informal playing, his presence on the coast gave Rova and other serious practitioners access to Mr. Braxton’s wealth of knowledge, and exposed us to his infinitely generous spirit. All of us were eager to play, perform and record together, and Larry, Jon and Anthony each refashioned existing works for the Rova-Braxton Quintet to play. The results were and are exciting and mind-bending."

Corbett Vs. Dempsey brucia l'estate 2018 con un classico immortale: Amarcord Nino Rota, tale e quale all'Hannibal 1981.

If you think you know how to put a mix-tape together, take a lesson from Hal Willner, the absolute master. In 1981, Willner produced a landmark record of interpretations of music written by Nino Rota for the films of Federico Fellini. With ten tracks and as many different lineups, this record set the template for a series of brilliant tributes that Willner has made over the ensuing 35 years, covering the songbooks of Monk, Mingus, Weill, and Disney, with a mind-expanding range of performers from Eugene Chadbourne to Chuck D to Diamanda Galas to Peter Frampton. On Amarcord Nino Rota, Willner drew together an equally dazzling spectrum of musicians, compiling them into a perfect program that explores Rota's wonderful, sly, sexy oeuvre from contrasting and complementary perspectives. Pianist Jaki Byard sets the stage with the title track and ends things with "La Strada", and in his first appearance on record, guitarist Bill Frisell contributes a haunting solo acoustic version of "Juliet Of The Spirits". Soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy, who lived in Rome early in his international years, offers a take on Rota's "Roma" and vibraphonist Dave Samuels provides interludes and transitions in a couple of spots. Long out-of-print on LP and only released on CD for a hot minute in the early nineties, Amarcord Nino Rota is a certifiable classic.

Due audiocassette ora pressoché introvabili, uscite in Francia nei primi anni Ottanta per AAA (8 New Songs By Mick Hobbs, 1983) e Ayaa (Cough, 1985), riunite per la prima volta in cd con il titolo Earlier Music: ottimo contributo alla conoscenza storica del progetto Officer! guidato da Mick Hobbs, per lodevolissima iniziativa di Walter Robotka e Klanggalerie.

Officer! was founded by Londoner Mick Hobbs. His roots were in the Rock In Opposition scene of the late 70s and early 80s. Initially he worked as guitarist in The Work, subsequently he became closely associated with This Heat and their Cold Storage Studio in Brixton, working with artists like Family Fodder, Catherine Jauniaux and Zeena Parkins. The band's first album 8 New Songs By Mick Hobbs came out in 1982 on cassette only. It forms the first half of this CD re-issue. With the exception of two songs that came out on 7" on Blackest Ever Black in 2014, the album has never been re-issued in any form, the cassette is nearly impossible to get. It marked the birth of a unique songwriter and improviser with a gift for melodies, difficult arrangements and poignant lyrics. The second album, Ossification, arrived a year later and has been made available on CD. The third album, Cough was recorded and released in France in 1985. It is often overlooked in the band's discography, a fate that many cassette releases share. Again, this is the first time that these songs are being made available. Both tapes have been remastered in 2018 and are presented here for the first time ever in digital quality. Officer! are one of the most important bands in the British art-rock scene.
