Annunciata per alcuni mesi fa è ora finalmente pronta la riedizione in vinile del secondo Aksak Maboul Un peu de l'âme des bandits, offerta tramite Bandcamp con diversi documenti aggiuntivi (uno dei quali, il cd antologico e di inediti Before and After Bandits, è disponibile anche singolarmente). Ed è per tutti l'occasione per ricordare che i viaggi formano la gioventù...

Originally released in January 1980, the second album from Crammed founder Marc Hollander’s band was more intense and experimental than Aksak Maboul’s debut album, yet often as playful. Containing complex written sections, free improv, and a wild variety of elements, Bandits was recorded with a band comprising revered UK musicians Fred Frith and Chris Cutler, and is described by All Music Guide as “a pinnacle of the RIO movement” (RIO being Rock In Opposition, the late-‘70s radical, pan-European coalition of bands, of which Aksak Maboul was part). The album reached #3 in the NME’s top ten European albums of 1980 (after Yello and The Nits, before Steve Reich and Faust!).
For this reissue, the album was remastered from original analogue tapes, and includes a booklet with abundant liner notes, documents, and recollections by all the participants. Also included in the LP is a bonus album entitled Before and After Bandits, containing previously-unreleased live and demo recordings featuring seventeen of the band’s successive members and guests. Over the course of ten tracks and 78 minutes of music, this collection charts the sinuous evolution of the ever-morphing Aksak Maboul sound, from the 1977 debut Onze danses pour combattre la migraine through the Bandits album, a little-documented avant-No Wave phase in 1980, the atypical, eclectic electropop of Ex-Futur Album, and until the project’s current live incarnation, which started in 2015 after a hiatus of some 30 years.

Sarà pronto a marzo - ma lo si può prenotare già ora tramite Bandcamp - il nuovo album ecosofico di David Garland: si tratta di Verdancy, autentico gioiello di autoproduzione artistica e musicale in quattro cd raccolti in un prezioso nido di foglie dell'Hudson Valley...

Scrive l'autore: "Patterns are the structure from which we view the world; they're also the structure that obscures our view of continuousness and constant change. The music on Verdancy grew out of two things: a very special modified acoustic guitar created by my son, and my move from New York City to upstate New York’s Hudson Valley. I've been given a glimpse of continuousness, a view past the frame of presumed patterns.
Living again in nature (as I did when I was a child), I vividly, finally see and experience the tumult and beauty of everything endlessly changing all the time. The guitar does that, too. The modified guitar is a genuinely electro-acoustic instrument, in which electronics aren’t generating an electronic tone, but instead provoke the vibration of wire and wood, creating a vibrating object that I interact with physically.
These elements have deeply changed my music. I feel connected to what I’ve done before, but I’m in a new, previously unknown sonic world, bushwhacking new paths, seeking beauty and danger, building new structures that suit the landscape."

Sarà disponibile a giorni la ristampa di un documento storico dei Magma, il concerto del 12 novembre 1971 al Théatre 140 di Bruxelles con la prima presentazione in pubblico di Mekanik Kommandoh, uscito nel 1996 (Akt VIII) e ora riproposto in edizione rimasterizzata (Akt 8V2): "Enregistré au Theatre 140 de Bruxelles le 12 novembre 1971, Bruxelles 1971 est un document exceptionnel dans la mesure où il représente la seule trace discographique du Magma live de cette époque. Composée du personnel figurant sur l'album Magma 2, la formation interpréte des thèmes empruntés a Kobaia et 1001° Centigrades, les deux premiers albums du groupe. Elle présente également - et c'est la l'aspect le plus intéressant de cet enregistrement - deux titres alors en gestation: Sowiloi, où Teddy Lasry démontre son grand talent de flûtiste, et Mekanik Kommandoh, joué pour la première fois en public, dans une version nettement plus développée que celle gravée, trois mois plus tôt, sur la compilation Puissance 13 + 2".

Langham Research Centre pay tribute to a composer who has had a significant impact on their work. Pierre Henry contributed meaningfully to the idea that all and any sounds are material for making music and the way he did this can be heard in the music of the LRC. Collage, superimposition, hard jump cuts and sudden intense clashes all feature. Also important is the use of electronic sound. Henry’s colleague Pierre Schaeffer disapproved of sources that he didn’t consider to be natural sound. Pierre Henry embraced electronic as well as concrete sounds.

Giornata speciale quella di oggi per Shirley Collins, ospite pomeriggio e sera della British Library a Londra per la presentazione del suo nuovo libro autobiografico All in the Downs e un concerto, il primo, con il gruppo di musicisti con cui l'anno scorso è stato realizzato l'album Lodestar. In programma c'è anche la proiezione del documentario The Ballad of Shirley Collins, presto disponibile per la generalità del pubblico anche in dvd e cd audio.

One of the key voices of British folk music discusses and performs her music, and reads from her new autobiography All in the Downs.
Widely regarded as the 20th century's most important singer of English traditional song, Shirley Collins stood at the epicentre of the folk music scene during the 1960s and 70s, building on her remarkable  travels with folklorist Alan Lomax, recording local singers around the US Deep South states of Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas. Unable to perform for four decades, she finally released a triumphant new album, Lodestar, last year.
This will be the first time Shirley has performed live with the band who recorded the album with her: Ian Kearey (music director, guitar) from Blue Aeroplanes and The Oyster Band, Dave Arthur (guitar, banjo, mandolin) and Pete Cooper (fiddles), both of folk group Rattle on the Stovepipe, Pip Barnes (guitar) and Glen Redman (dancer).
Shirley will be in conversation with Luke Turner, writer and co-founder and editor of award-winning online arts magazine The Quietus, followed by a live set.

Un invito a sostenere la fase finale di realizzazione del suo nuovo lavoro Out of Sinc, atteso per la primavera, viene da Dave Sinclair, attraverso le tipiche modalità della piattaforma PledgeMusic. Piatto forte dell'album è un lungo composito brano di cui l'autore è particolarmente orgoglioso, ma c'è anche un esplicito rimando all'epoca Matching Mole: "One track in particular over 17 minutes long incorporates most of the music genres that I love including Rock, Jazz, Blues, Choral, Pop, Folk and Classical. It’s climactic and powerful, and I wonder sometimes how it all manages to come through and out of me. But thankfully out of me it does come, hence the title of the album ‘Out Of Sinc’. Of course some of the music could also be ‘Out Of Sync’ but that’s because it’s being played by humans and not machines. Another track is one I wrote, while in the band Matching Mole, which Robert Wyatt used to sing at live shows. It has never been recorded until now."

Se aveva un po' sorpreso la Suzanne proposta da John Greaves in coda ai recital solitari dei mesi scorsi, ulteriori segni di una possibile sintonia con l'universo-Cohen si sono poi profusi nel concerto reso a metà novembre al Theatre du Garde-Chasse a Les Lilas (Francia) in omaggio all'illustre canadese. C'erano Keren Ann, Bertrand Belin, Elise Caron, Katel, Loic Lantoine, Melissa Laveaux, Emily Loizeau, Jp Nataf, Helmut Tellier, Pierre Guenard, Angelina Wismes, e Greaves con Suzanne, appunto. E Tower of Song: 'I was born with the gift of a golden voice...'

Le 7 novembre 2016, Leonard Cohen s’éteignait à l’âge de 82 ans, bouleversant l’ensemble du monde de la culture. Légende de la musique, de la chanson et bien sûr de la poésie du XXème siècle, il incarnait le talent, l’intelligence, l’ouverture et l’apaisement. Le Triton et le Théâtre du Garde-Chasse s’associent pour rendre hommage à l’artiste incontournable qu’était Leonard Cohen en accueillant l’émission historique Le Pont des Artistes d’Isabelle Dhordain sur France Inter, diffusée depuis deux ans sur tritOnline et TVM Est-Parisien, et depuis septembre sur VIA Grand Paris. Stevie Moore, sono ormai giunti a undici i volumi della serie Copy Me a lui dedicata, con centinaia e centinaia di cover e di interpretazioni semiprofessionali o casalinghe offerte da emuli e ammiratori di tutto il mondo. Se trentatré anni e un terzo è lo stupefacente intervallo temporale - effettivo, non solo simbolico - tra la prima pubblicazione di Cuneiform Records (What’s the Point? di R. Stevie Moore, nel 1984) e l'ultima (il box degli Art Zoyd 44 ½: Live and Unreleased Works, poche settimane fa), una pausa di riflessione nel 2018 sarà non soltanto meritata, ma anche necessaria. Forse foriera di grandi cambiamenti. Lo scrive in prima persona Steve Feigenbaum, cercando comunque di rincuorare i sostenitori dell'etichetta (e quelli di Wayside Music): "The biggest news this week is that, due to the fact that the market for recorded music continues to dwindle while the expenses of making and releasing recorded music, especially the promotional expenses, stay the same or go up, I am forced to lay off my (excellent) promotional staff and am discontinuing releasing any new Cuneiform titles for the immediate future. Maybe you've heard this elsewhere and maybe you are hearing it now for the first time, but it's very important that all of Wayside Music's customers understand this: We are not going bankrupt; I and Simon and Lindsey are still here and running Wayside Music, which remains a viable operation. I am also still here running Cuneiform, including doing administration of the label, handling any sales that comes in, and paying royalties to the artists for all sales. Just as we have for over 3 decades. It's actually exactly 33 1/3rd years (really!) from the date of our first release by R. Stevie Moore to our final release of the Art Zoyd set. I didn't plan it that way, but 33 1/3rd years does somehow seem beautifully appropriate.

Caroline Kraabel came to London from Seattle as a teenager, just too late to realise her punk dreams and instead discovering the saxophone, street performance and busking. There were ideas about freedom in the air, including the punk ideal of music as something anyone could do, which led to music in which one could, with application and inspiration, do anything: improvisation. London’s vibrant improvised music scene and its many great musicians gave Kraabel opportunities to explore extended techniques (especially the use of voice with the sax) and to spend time thinking about acoustics and the interactions of electricity and music: reproduction, synthesis, and their implications.
Caroline Kraabel is committed to improvisation as a way of living and working, making music in unexpected ways and places (Taking a Life for a Walk; Going Outside) but also composing and playing written music (Mass Producers and Saxophone Experiments in Space for large groups, and many pieces for smaller groups). She has worked with Anri Sala, Maggie Nicols, Andrea Zarza Canova, Evan Parker, Annie Lewandowski, John Tchicai, Cleveland Watkiss and Susan Alcorn, among many fine artists, and was a director of the London Musicians' Collective, which created Resonance 104.4 fm, London’s art radio station.

Tre piccoli capolavori irrisolti della cinematografia underground catalana escono allo scoperto su YT per intercessione dello stesso collettivo che li produsse qualche anno fa a Barcellona, quel Libre Albedrio autarchico e semiclandestino in cui militavano Bing Selfish, Andi Haller, Mauro Devoto e Ramon Prat (e altri cento). I titoli sono Picnic En El Garraf (2004), Dry Town (2005) e Antoni Antoni Antoni (2007), tutti tratti dal dvd Spitting in the Eye of the Hollywood Mammoth, tutti imperdibili, tutti da morir dal ridere. L'ultimo, omaggio ad Antoni Tapies, è presente anche tra le proposte del primo appuntamento del 2018 con il Depresstival, convocato questa sera all'Others Club londinese dall'instancabile Lottie Bowater.

Doveva essere un bonus riservato ai propri ammiratori, a compensare la lunga attesa di un nuovo album continuamente procrastinato; invece ora è disponibile a tutti - tramite Bandcamp - il set wyattiano di uno speciale doppio concerto che gli olandesi Grey Lotus hanno effettuato ad Haarlem poco più di un anno fa. Per l'occasione erano in formazione allargata a nonetto, e in scaletta avevano brani affrontati già in precedenti occasioni assieme ad altri in prima esecuzione: Out of the Blue, Alifib, Memories, Forest, Blues in Bob Minor, Shipbuilding, Free Will & Testament, The Ghosts Within e Sea Song. E il Nostro ha gradito: "The Grey Lotus sound is magical”.

Haarlems artrock collectief Grey Lotus waagt zich opnieuw aan het werk van de Britse jazz/artrock zanger Robert Wyatt. Het gezelschap was oorspronkelijk van plan om het concept eenmalig uit te voeren twee jaar terug, maar het project beviel zowel band als publiek zo goed dat het al een aantal malen herhaald is. Nu twee jaar na het debuut van de dubbelconcerten waarbij de band zowel eigen werk als dat van Wyatt speelt is er een nieuwe set samengesteld. Van Grey Lotus verschijnt binnenkort een nieuw album. De nieuwe nummers zijn divers, dynamisch, weldoordacht en hebben een scherp oog voor detail. Zoals de grote meester, Robert Wyatt zelf zegt: “The Grey Lotus sound is magical”.

Tra le promesse di inizio anno che Mike Westbrook consegna al 2018 ci sono almeno due importanti pubblicazioni - oltre a un altro paio, su cui c'è ancora riserbo - con il consueto invito ad appassionati e ammiratori a sostenerne preventivamente la realizzazione: si tratta di un omaggio al compianto Lou Gare, ricordando alcune sue recenti partecipazioni ai lavori dell'Orchestra, e di uno sguardo retrospettivo all'eccezionale festival westbrookiano di Catania del luglio 1992. ‘Mike Westbrook in memory of Lou Gare, tenor saxophone (1939 to 2017)’
In the early '60s Lou Gare, worked in the Mike Westbrook Band in a saxophone section alongside John Surman and Mike Osborne. He then spent several decades away from the jazz scene, as a member of the seminal free-music ensemble AMM. Eventually he moved to the relative obscurity of the West Country, continuing to play occasionally, a legendary figure among the cognoscenti, little known to the public. In 2010 he was re-united with Mike Westbrook when he joined what was to become The Uncommon Orchestra. In re-connecting with his jazz roots, a innovative and imaginative improviser, Lou showed himself to be an historically aware saxophonist in a line from Coleman Hawkins, Lester Young, Charlie Parker and Sonny Rollins. He was a major contributor to the Orchestra’s workshops and concerts, until health problems began to take their toll. Lou was involved in early performance of A Bigger Show but he was unable to participate in the recording of the album. He died on the 6th of October 2017. Lou Gare’s playing made a deep impression on all who heard him. There has to be a way of celebrating this creative period in the musical life of one of the UK’s and most original saxophonists. Fortunately Matthew North taped some of the concerts. Out of that material it has been possible to put together a series of musical snapshots of Lou Gare, tenor saxophonist, in full flight. As only such live recordings can, these tracks capture the essence of the sheer inventiveness, audacity and lyricism of a great Artist.

Over three nights in the summer of 1992 the Associazione Catania Jazz presented a Mike Westbrook Music Festival, featuring the Orchestra in three programmes: Big Band Rossini, The Orchestra of Smith’s Academy and The European Song Book. The Orchestra at that time was at a peak and boasted one of its strongest line-ups. Featured soloists included saxophonists Alan Barnes, Chris Biscoe, Pete Whyman and Alan Wakeman, trombonist Paul Nieman, pianist Pete Saberton and vibraphonist Anthony Kerr. Vocalists Kate Westbrook and Phil Minton were joined, in Catania, by special guests Danilo Terenzi on trombone and by violinist Dominique Pifarely. This was the period of touring in the UK and Europe with Big Band Rossini, culminating in an Albert Hall concert in the BBC Proms. There followed a season at Ronnie Scott’s and an appearance at the Crawley Jazz Festival. The Catania album features state-of-the-art performances of Westbrook ‘classics’, many of them never heard before on record. With the discovery of previously unknown tapes, and with the help of Jon Hiseman and his Temple Music Studio, it is at last possible to re-create on CD a historic moment in European Jazz.

Rilanciate anche dal magnifico recupero che ne han fatto recentemente The Unthanks, le canzoni e le poesie di Molly Drake - mamma di Nick e di Gabrielle - tornano nuovamente in circolazione in due edizioni curate da Bryter Music assieme a Fledg'ling Records, una sobria e una più lussuosa, questa con doppio cd e prezioso volume anticato di quasi duecento pagine: The Tide’s Magnificence.

The Tide’s Magnificence comes as a full colour 196 page hard-back case-bound and stitched book printed on contrasting paper stock with printed page edges. The book contains 79 poems by Molly Drake, lyrics to the songs, a 14 page introduction by her daughter, the actor Gabrielle Drake, photos, diary extracts, song manuscripts and handwritten notes by Molly, as well as the essay Give Me A Place To Be, which previously appeared in the book about Nick Drake: Remembered For A While.
There are two CDs containing 26 songs. The first CD was originally released as a limited private pressing in 2013, the second contains 7 unreleased songs all of which were recorded in mono in the 1950s on home tape recorders by Molly’s husband Rodney Drake. The songs were digitally transferred by Nick’s producer and engineer; John Wood and mastered by Simon Heyworth at Super Audio Mastering carefully preserving the varying qualities inevitably found in such old recordings.
Many of the songs and poems were so exquisitely covered on the 2017 tour by The Unthanks and on their CD and vinyl release The Songs Of Molly Drake.
The Tide’s Magnificence is a limited edition, there will only be one pressing of the set before it is made available as a single CD.

Qualche rara copia prodotta ad aprile in occasione del Record Store Day dev'esser finita nel sacco di Babbo, se qualche bimbo buono se l'è vista consegnare nei giorni scorsi tra uhh e ahh d'incontenibile ammirazione: è un Kevin Ayers da collezione, con Champagne And Valium e My Speeding Heart stampati in vinile biondissimo, trendy quest'anno come non mai. I brani non son nuovi e nemmeno di massimo pregio, ma la confezione e il pensiero quelli sì inebrianti. Letteralmente!

Kevin Ayers, the hugely influential and much-loved British singer-songwriter, founder member of Soft Machine and free spirit, died on 18th February, 2013. Thirty years previously, Kevin released his controversial album Diamond Jack And The Queen Of Pain from which the two stand-out songs, the chillingly beautiful Champagne And Valium and the driving electronica of My Speeding Heart were released as a single by Charly Records. Exclusively for Record Store Day 2017, both tracks have been cut directly from the recently discovered original Audiofilm Studios analogue master tape by Matt Colton at Alchemy Studios and pressed on “champagne” coloured vinyl and released as a strictly limited edition 7-inch single. The single features a full-colour picture label of Kevin while the picture sleeve adapts the original Charly sleeve with beautiful imagery from the singer’s home in Deià.
