Complementing this complete experience are two extraordinary compact discs mastered directly from true-to-life tape recordings out of the G.F. Fitz-Gerald archive. Compact Disc One is an intimate, close-mic concert recording of Fitz-Gerald & Coxhill at Newcastle’s Spectro Arts Workshop, 1981. Here the duo’s mercurial genius for spatial sonics is fully displayed. Compact Disc Two collects several works for tape, beginning with Listen Collage, which reconstructs, à la Faust Tapes, random room sounds of bizarre hippie domesticity, bedroom radios, tape recorders and ambient street sounds from London’s Ladbrooke Grove during the spring of 1969. Unmistakably this is a prodigious twenty minute audio adventure unique to its epoch. Following Listen Collage are two extended works for and prepared guitars and sundry effects, leading to the sampled tape loop trip Band In My Head. And lastly, a tape collage for The Matchbox Purveyors’ stage show, The Team. This entire disc transforms the magic of the creative moment into deeply experiential realms for our minds eye. Furthermore, in refusing to impose any impure digital processing whatsoever, these analogue recordings remain en vérité.
Few guitarists have so audaciously scaled the sonic heights G.F. A delicate, intimate and sometimes slightly thorny affair Anicca, named after the concept of impermanence in Buddhism, is a first encounter between boundary pushing cellist Okkyung Lee (New York) and legendary singer Phil Minton (London). Recorded in a day at Eastcote Studios, London, this release comes housed in hand screenprinted wrap around sleeves based on an intricate papercut by Okkyung. Exclusive liner notes are provided by artist Christian Marclay, a frequent collaborator of both Phil and Okkyung.
Recorded acoustically and with the aim to capturing the rawest, smallest, biggest and most beautiful sounds of their respective instruments, Okkyung’s cello and Phil’s voice sound nothing like they should. At their most powerful the resonance of both strings and vocal cords trade places, merge and tangle to create a storm, a wave and a crackling fire. But each gust of the wind is preceded and followed by the hush tones of two strangers meeting for the first time. Listening to Anicca is witnessing a constant state of flux. Per il suo nuovo album, Motormouth, Bob Ostertag si è servito unicamente di un sintetizzatore modulare Buchla 200e, parente dell'esemplare su cui condusse le sue prime esperienze da studente a metà anni settanta e lontano erede del pionieristico '100' creato nel 1963 da Don Buchla: "Playing a modular synthesizer like the 200e requires that one think about music in a very particular way. It is a very different experience from working with notation, timelines, MIDI, or keyboards. But it's also very different from working with music software, even software that is specifically designed to mimic the behavior of old modular analog synthesizers. Essentially, one has to think geometrically: each module generates certain shapes, and then you make the music by overlaying shapes in different ways."
