In occasione della recente uscita dei suoi "Around the clock. Una breve storia della popular music" (Utet Libreria) e "Il suono in cui viviamo" (in una nuova edizione per il Saggiatore) Franco Fabbri compie a novembre un breve ciclo di presentazioni presso Feltrinelli a Bologna, Torino, Ferrara e Milano. All'appuntamento milanese prenderà parte anche Umberto Fiori.

Da qualche decennio si usa il termine «popular music» per indicare l'insieme dei generi che a partire dalla prima metà dell'Ottocento si sono differenziati sia dalla musica d'arte che da quella di tradizione popolare, in un contesto di crescente commercializzazione e - dopo l'invenzione del fonografo - di inarrestabile diffusione mediatica. Nella seconda metà del Novecento la popular music di maggior diffusione è stata di origine afroamericana e angloamericana, ma un esame ravvicinato dello stesso rock'n'roll, della musica beat, del rock, e degli altri generi che hanno dominato il mercato discografico dagli anni Cinquanta a oggi mostra un intreccio sorprendente di influenze, materiali comuni, coincidenze nei contesti socioculturali, tecnologici, industriali. Per capire la popular music di oggi è quindi necessario uno sguardo d'insieme su tutti i generi che si sono avvicendati e differenziati dall'Ottocento in poi, in un'area geografica molto vasta. Dal fado e dal cabaret francese alla canzone napoletana, da Stephen Foster al tango, dal flamenco al rebetico, dalla canzone americana di Tin Pan Alley alla chanson, dal rock'n'roll alla bossa nova, dai cantautori al rock psichedelico, dal reggae al rap, fino alla world music, seguendo anche gli sviluppi delle tecnologie e dei media che hanno reso possibile la grande diffusione della popular music in tutti i paesi del mondo. Uno sguardo necessariamente breve, ma il più possibile equilibrato, che rende conto del contributo di popoli, storie e culture diverse al suono globale del Duemila.

Franco Fabbri insegna materie collegate alla storia e all'estetica della popular music e ai rapporti fra musica e media nelle università di Torino, Milano, Genova, e all'estero. È stato tra i fondatori della Iaspm (International Association for the Study of Popular Music) e ne è stato chairman internazionale. Fa parte delle redazioni delle riviste «Musica/Realtà», «Popular Music», «Radical Musicology».

La veste grafica dell'attuale edizione forse sacrifica un po' dell'effetto tattile e visivo del materiale originale - busta esterna e puzzle all'interno soprattutto - ma si arricchisce di testi informativi e profili aggiornati dei musicisti partecipanti e di versioni in inglese di tutti i testi, e almeno per il singolo - The Recommended Sampler EP, oggi come allora offerto a quanti hanno prenotato una copia dell'album in sottoscrizione - recupera un piacevole gioco di fluorescenze e spiritate trasparenze. Beh, imperdibile!

Originally released in 1982, this is a collection of specially commissioned and (at the time) newly recorded pieces by the most interesting groups and individuals then in the Recommended catalogue. Never reissued, it has slowly become a prized collectors' item - and remains an indispensable snapshot of the range and musical brilliance of this critical moment in the history of a small community of left-field groups struggling towards new musical languages. The Wire ospita nella rubrica The Inner Sleeve del numero di novembre 2008 un interessante scritto di Robert Wyatt a proposito di un evocativo poster conservato con cura nella propria casa: un concerto del 1963 dell'amatissimo Max Roach a New York, con la cantante Abbey Lincoln, a sostegno del comitato cittadino per i rifugiati dell'Angola. Ancora su Wyatt, in altre parti della rivista ci sono recensioni delle prime ristampe per Domino - quattro album per ora, oltre al singolo con Bertrand Burgalat - e un affettuoso commento che gli riserva Hal Willner (il quale negli 'ascolti alla cieca' di Invisible Jukebox stenta un po' a riconoscere Born Again Cretin...).

Dopo quella di Whitfield pochi giorni fa un'altra perdita segna irrimediabilmente il mondo della moderna musica nera: Levi Stubbs, cantante del gruppo Four Tops e una della voci più espressive della leggendaria casa discografica Motown, è morto a Detroit a 72 anni, malato ormai da tempo. Impossibile non ricordarlo in superclassici come Reach Out (I'll Be There) e Baby I Need Your Loving. O tra le voci originali de La piccola bottega degli orrori. O ancora grazie al brano scritto da Billy Bragg pensando a lui (e magnificamente ripreso da Dave Stewart e Barbara Gaskin in The Big Idea).

Il trio Konk Pack con Tim Hodgkinson, Thomas Lehn e Roger Turner debuttò in Italia nel dicembre 1998 con alcuni concerti promossi dal Circ.a, dando per la prima volta seguito a un incontro avvenuto tra i tre a Budapest l'anno precedente. Finalmente è disponibile il libro scritto da John Tilbury sulla vita, le opere, il credo musicale e politico di Cornelius Cardew: si intitola A Life Unfinished, è di oltre mille pagine e lo si può ottenere direttamente da Matchless Recordings.

Cornelius Cardew was a musician of genius for whom Life and Art were as one. He was a radical, both artistically and politically, becoming a tireless activist and uncompromising Marxist-Leninist. Passion and imagination governed all he did: his boldness and humanity continue to intrigue and inspire.
John Tilbury, whose close friendship with Cardew dates from their first concert together, in January 1960, has worked for many years on this biography, and brings his subject vividly to life. In doing this, he has drawn extensively from Cardew’s journals and letters, and obtained first-hand accounts from friends and colleagues. The handling of this material is thoughtful and meticulous. Tilbury is a master story-teller and this particular story is of epic scale and character. We begin in 1932, appropriately on May Day, with the first meeting of his parents. Later, we encounter the intrepid schoolboy and student, who impressed sufficiently at the Royal Academy of Music to receive funds to study in Cologne with Karlheinz Stockhausen. The narrative during this period is delightfully picaresque, a colourful prelude to the years of family responsibilities and extraordinary musical endeavour and achievement (AMM, Treatise, the Scratch Orchestra and The Great Learning). As events unfold, discussion of the music is given due weight, but is never unduly weighty.
Towards the end, there is an implacable gain in momentum as Cardew’s political work makes increasing demands on his time and apparently limitless reserves of energy.
A life unfinished? The final chapter is entitled “12/13 December 1981” and eloquently “vibrates in the memory”.

Dopo l'eccellente Up to Earth di qualche mese fa esce ancora per Fledg’ling un inedito di Chris McGregor - questa volta in trio con Barre Phillips e Louis Moholo - dal titolo Our Prayer, con registrazioni del 1969 prodotte da Joe Boyd.

Another previously unreleased gem from South African pianist-composer Chris McGregor and his cohorts in '60s UK free jazz. Our Prayer was culled from the same sessions that produced the also never-released Up To Earth in 1969 and was produced by Joe Boyd and engineered by John Wood at Sound Techniques studio. The previous year they had signed to Joe Boyd's illustrious Witchseason production company alongside Fairport Convention, John and Beverley Martyn, Nick Drake and the Incredible String Band. Our Prayer comprises a magical trio set, focusing on McGregor's piano playing, accompanied by the Blue Note's Louis Moholo on drums and Barre Phillips on double bass. Both Our Prayer and Up To Earth records were planned for release in 1969 before being shelved as the McGregor group morphed into the spectacular big band, the Brotherhood of Breath, and all energies were transferred to recording the Brotherhood's debut album.

This is an extraordinary 2 & 1/4 hour documentary about one of downtown's most resourceful, inventive and diverse musicians and composers - Elliott Sharp. For more than thirty years, Mr. Sharp, has navigated various streams of music - rock, jazz, blues, noise, improv, modern classical, electric, acoustic, etc., playing assorted guitars, saxes, computer and instruments of his own invention, rarely resting and constantly evolving. For this lengthy documentary, Mr. Shapiro has captured many of E. Sharp's varied projects and contexts. Elliott is interviewed throughout and explains his long story and development, mentioning his many influences that helped him explore and find his own sound. While Elliott explains his own approach, he has a guitar in hand to show the points he is making. Elliott also shows the a handful of the instruments that he has invented and put together from different cheap or abandoned instruments or parts. This documentary includes various performances of Mr. Sharp's different ensembles and bands: an opera called "Em/Pyre" premiered in Italy, playing in Beijing with Chinese classical musicians, conducting one version of Orchestra Carbon performing his work "Quarks Swim Free", playing with his guitar ensemble, as well as his distinctive blues band, Terraplane. There are a number of extra features included as well like solo guitar and other ensemble performances, photos, musicians bios and other information on Mr. Sharp.

Il Volume 6 dell'atteso 40th Anniversary Box di Henry Cow è qui! Evviva!

"This is the first new release in 30 years from this legendary audience-splitting British group, and the first featuring Georgina Born, the group's bassist from 1976-78. Remixed and re-mastered from the original Swedish radio tapes. Henry Cow were never going to fit in. Their compositions were way too composed and their improvising was way too improvised - a tendency that only got more extreme as time went on, as these recordings from 1976 and 1977 demonstrate. Stockholm and Goteborg fills in some of the missing history between In Praise of Learning (1975) and Western Culture (1978) and offers music that has not been heard on record until now. First is Tim Hodgkinson's late and fiendishly complicated epic composition 'Erk Gah' (a working title), that took many months of sweat to learn and resolutely eschews any hint of riff, solo or modular assembly. At the other extreme are the two wide-ranging improvisations built around heady extended instrumental techniques, aleatorics, quotations, more-or-less randomly inserted prepared materials and a blithe disregard for genre rules. Between, constantly shifting ground, are a straight-ahead version of Phil Ochs' No more Songs (one of only two covers ever performed by the band), an unreleased composition by Fred Frith, and a version of the Ottawa Song: a typical live set from that period. Finally, Stockholm is a snapshot of a band of exceptional talents having fun. And it reflects what the studio albums could not - that Henry Cow's natural habitat was the stage - and the real-time pressure of public performance - because it was there that the music could live and breathe. Ad inaugurare la festosa messe tra pochi giorni la riedizione - con leggera variante - del singolo This Summer Night, inciso da Wyatt con Bertrand Burgalat nel 2007 e uscito per Tricatel in sole cinquecento copie. Poi a dicembre... sorpresa!

Domino are extremely proud to release the landmark recordings of Robert Wyatt – one of the most distinguished, visionary, influential and singular catalogues in contemporary music.
To listen to these albums again is to hear not only a career spanning genres from Pop to Avant Garde, it’s an evolution of ideas, emotions and characters across the whole human condition. A catalogue that demands a Professor Richard Dawkins seminar all of its own.
Due to the rarity of original copies, and the high prices they fetch, all releases will be made available not just on CD, but also on vinyl at the end of October and early November 2008.
This ensures several of the titles: Drury Lane, Shleep & Cuckooland will be making their debut appearance on the LP vinyl format. These releases will be preceded on 20th October by the release of ‘This Summer Night’ single, which sees Robert working alongside French producer/composer Bertrand Burgalat and includes a remix by Hot Chip. Finally in December, we will be releasing a Robert Wyatt box set, more details about that soon.

Evelyn Glennie, percussionista e compositrice scozzese ben nota anche al di fuori del circuito della classica contemporanea per alcune collaborazioni con Nana Vasconcelos, Bela Fleck, Bjork, Bobby Mc Ferrin, Sting e Fred Frith, è a Rovereto (TN) il prossimo 3 ottobre con un concerto da sola per il Festival Internazionale W. A. Mozart: in programma brani di Rzewski, Reich, Schmidt, Masson e Bach tra gli altri.
