Dei propri album come unico titolare, quello di cui Ralph Towner era più soddisfatto era forse il poliedrico Blue Sun (Ecm, 1983): "That was my one man band record. In that recording I played every instrument that I can play, and overdubbed. It was really an interesting project, and sounds like a lot of people, not just one person. The music I wrote for it was very nice." Il suo ultimo è invece At First Light (Ecm, 2023), recital per sola chitarra classica registrato a Lugano quattro anni fa, infuso di ammirazione per gli eterni ispiratori George Gershwin, John Coltrane, John Dowland e Bill Evans. Un lascito prezioso.

Prima della piega un po' manierista presa con l'approdo all'Ecm il gruppo principe di Ralph Towner, gli Oregon con Paul McCandless, Glen Moore e Collin Walcott, fu capace nel cuore degli anni Settanta di ipotizzare altri mondi jazz plausibili (e desiderabili) alternativi al machismo della fusion imperante tra i contemporanei: ne rende testimonianza il percorso degli album Vanguard ed Elektra da Music Of Another Present Era a Roots In The Sky, da ripercorrere anche - o soprattutto - ora, con il groppo in gola per la perdita della sua illuminata guida.

Mike Westbrook congeda il 2025 ripensando alle ultime note eseguite in pubblico dalla Band of Bands, l'inattesa ripresa di un celebre tema dedicato ai compianti Danilo Terenzi e Tony Marsh a conclusione del concerto dello scorso 23 novembre al Livermead Cliff Hotel di Torquay: "Torquay was one of those gigs that nobody wants to end. We’ve said pretty well everything that needs to be said, in music, song and improvisation. What’s left? My only thought was a reprise of D.T.T.M., which we’d played in an extended version during the set. There are a few well wrought, time honoured phrases in that short song that are pure gold. I needed to hear them again. Both as an end-of-year signing off and a promise that this special blues will be there next year, and forever. There was a moment of confusion before Marcus took charge, followed by Matt on keyboard, while Pete and Chris were deciding what should happen next. Then the two altos were joined by Karen’s accordion in that bewitching unison sound which is such a feature of the Band of Bands. Quiet and soulful at first, then with Coach and Marcus slipping effortlessly into gear, and choice fills from Matt, taking the line to its passionate conclusion. Kate and I weren’t playing. Just to be there was enough."

"On a stormy night in London town, the quartet of pianist Alexander von Schlippenbach with Evan Parker (tenor sax), John Edwards (double bass) and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums, percussion), played two storming, uninterrupted, extemporised sets on the first night of their two-day residency at Cafe Oto, underpinned by their commitment to invention, close musical dialogue and technique of the highest order. With von Schlippenbach and Parker batting the melodic initiatives back and forth, Edwards and Nilssen-Love marked out the engine room, driving and moderating pace with flair, energy and imagination. Su consiglio di Werner Durand Arnold Dreyblatt incontra a Berlino i quattro Horse Lords - con temporaneo sostituto - e li coinvolge nella sua pluridecennale esplorazione di risonanze, accordature naturali e microtonalità in Extended Field, nuovo capitolo della serie FRKWYS ideata dalla newyorkese RVNG Intl per favorire la collaborazione tra compositori e musicisti di diversa età ed esperienza sul terreno della ricerca e della sperimentazione sonora: "Extended Field unites Horse Lords and Arnold Dreyblatt for the eighteenth volume of FRKWYS, an intergenerational collaboration of adventurous musicians drawn to the sonically radiant world of just intonation - an ancient tuning system in which scale intervals are derived from whole-number ratios. Dreyblatt first immersed himself in this approach in New York during the 1970s, while Horse Lords began exploring and applying its possibilities nearly four decades later. Together, they create a vibrant harmonic environment, fueled by a shared devotion to rhythm, achieving a marriage of discreet but related aesthetics for the ages."

Primi a celebrare il centenario della nascita di Morton Feldman, nato a New York il 12 gennaio 1926, gli infaticabili attivisti di Other Minds - associazione di San Francisco impegnata da oltre trent'anni in ogni forma di sostegno, promozione e documentazione delle più avventurose musiche contemporanee - hanno voluto dedicargli qualche giorno fa uno speciale evento nella pregiata serie PastForward presentando Triadic Memories, celebre composizione del 1981 raramente eseguita in concerto, affidandola all'espertissima pianista Amy Williams. Così di Triadic Memories disse a suo tempo l'autore: "Without getting overly technical, the music is made of essentially just two different kinds of intervals: a minor second, a major second, which of course is also a minor seventh and a major seventh. And it is by superimposing other like intervals that the chord formations are made. I was always very interested in writing music, where you thought one way and yet it sounded another. And this piece is really no exception."

Other Minds is dedicated to the encouragement and propagation of contemporary music in all its forms through concerts, recordings, broadcasts, audio preservation, and public discussions that bring together artists and audiences of diverse traditions, generations, and cultural backgrounds. Realizzato dall'autorevole Partch Ensemble guidato da John Schneider esce per Bridge Records il primo documento discografico contenente per intero il ciclo di composizioni che Harry Partch (1901-1974) ideò a partire dalle proprie incredibili avventure tra vagabondi, autostoppisti e altri irregolari viaggiando nell'ovest degli Stati Uniti nella seconda metà degli anni Trenta (una decina d'anni prima, cioè, dell'ambientazione scelta da Kerouac per On The Road): The Wayward.

"Harry Partch was that rare thing of a true original. Born in California in 1901, Partch went on to create his own musical scale, construct his own highly idiosyncratic musical instruments and compose some of the strangest and most delightful music of the 20th century. This glorious disc from the Partch Ensemble brings to life one of Partch's most intriguing and affecting series of works, The Wayward, in a world premiere recording. Non è la prima volta che torna (giustamente) al centro dell'attenzione, in edizioni diverse rispetto all'originale - all'epoca uno spartano LP realizzato in proprio e distribuito in poche copie direttamente ai concerti - e spesso con l'aggiunta di ulteriori brani. Da ultimo ci ha messo mano Olaf Rupp per consegnarla in digitale a Destination-Out forse nella sua forma definitiva: è Machine Gun, opera celebre e cruciale nella storia del free europeo prodotta nel cuore del maggio 1968 da Peter Brötzmann in ottetto con Willem Breuker, Evan Parker, Fred Van Hove, Peter Kowald, Buschi Niebergall, Han Bennink e Sven-Åke Johansson. Da urlo!

Dal blog dell'etichetta francese nato Le Glob si invia un abbracccio affettuoso a tre grandi batteristi (e non solo) scomparsi nel 2025: Louis Moholo-Moholo, Sven-Åke Johansson e Jack DeJohnette, Trois faunes tambours.

L’existence des batteurs et leur absence soudaine peuvent peut-être, sensiblement mieux que tous les soupirs, nous dire un peu de ce qui reste de la vie, de ce qu’on peut encore en attendre, en vivre. Louis Moholo-Moholo, Sven-Åke Johansson, Jack DeJohnette, trois batteurs qui n’avaient pas exactement, comme quelques prédécesseurs (mettons: Sid Catlett, Jo Jones, Kenny Clarke, Sunny Murray, Tony Williams, Tony Oxley, Han Bennink...), fait la révolution des tambours, mais l’avaient portée à un émoustillant niveau de lucidité, pour paraphraser Norman Mailer "lieu de rencontre de la conscience et de la sensualité". L’élégance discrète quant à leur entrée initiale dans l’histoire, les suites diablement énergiques, leurs inexhaustibles inventions, ont tendu et sous-tendu des moments majeurs des évolutions du jazz. Des moments à même de se situer au-delà de la rupture.

Didier Malherbe fece brevemente parte del gruppo di Pip Pyle Equip'Out assieme a Elton Dean, Sophia Domancich e Hugh Hopper in occasione del primo giro di concerti in Francia, una dozzina di date nell'autunno 1984 parzialmente documentate su audiocassetta direttamente dal batterista e titolare. Il concerto del 10 dicembre tenuto a Bresse-sur-Grosne presso l'amatissimo club A l'Ouest de la Grosne di Jacky Barbier è tra le più recenti pubblicazioni curate da Aymeric Leroy per il Phil Miller-The Legacy.

Scrive Leroy in una nota introduttiva: "Equip’Out was the band Pip Pyle formed as he was moving base from England to France, beginning a musical as well as private partnership with the French pianist. His initial idea was to involve both Elton Dean and John Greaves from his previous group Soft Heap, but Greaves declined, which led to Pip drawing Hugh Hopper out of retirement. The band’s first tour also had Pip’s old Gong bandmate Didier Malherbe as second sax (and flute) player, and Didier actually does most of the onstage announcements on the first few gigs, perhaps because Pip didn’t feel confident with his French at this point. Didier left the band after that, although he returned as special guest for the first studio album."

Anche di Compositions and Collaborations, 1972-2022 - il personale box che Chris Cutler ha voluto dedicarsi tempo fa per far sintesi di cinquant'anni di musiche e parole come compositore e come improvvisatore, da solo o con decine di diverse formazioni - esistono ancora alcune copie fisiche presso ReR Megacorp. Chi non se la sente di affrontare l'intera serie - sono dieci cd, di cui cinque inizialmente inediti, e un dvd audio di 22 ore - può trovare qualche singolo album disponibile in digitale presso Bandcamp, optando almeno per il doppio antologico It Makes Sense To Me, così rinunciando però alle indispensabili note contenute nei due corposi libretti che sono tra i punti forti della pubblicazione.

Per i Residents invece il 2026 inizia malissimo, con il forzato rinvio dell'intera serie di concerti di Eskimo in programma a gennaio in Canada e Stati Uniti: "It is with deep regret that we must announce the postponement of The Residents' Eskimo tour. Due to an unexpected and serious health-related matter within the band's camp, we have made the decision to reschedule the tour for later in 2026. This decision follows careful consideration and consultation, with everyone's well-being as the top priority. The Residents remain very eager to bring this album to the stage and fully intend to do so once circumstances allow.
