Recorded in Italy in 1985, Live in Foggia is a valuable record of a unique trio playing at the very top of their game. Larry Stabbins, after years of playing with many of the greatest improvising musicians of the 60s and 70s (John Stevens, Chris McGregor, Keith Tippett, Mike Westbrook, Tony Oxley etc) had recently exploded onto the pop world with the bands Weekend and Working Week and was quite famous in Italy. Both Louis and Keith are in their prime here, and the level of playing by all three is off the scale. The album takes on an extra resonance with the recent passing of our friend, the great Louis Moholo-Moholo, five years to the day from the death of Keith Tippett and this trio especially assembled to celebrate the album will play an impassioned tribute to Keith and Louis. We are also taking this opportunity to celebrate the life of a great friend to the label, and the Vortex. Shirley Thompson, partner to John Jack, was a regular member of the Vortex audience with John - they had their own table and attanded every week for many years until John’s death and Shirley’s illness. Shirley passed away this year and many members of the community will remember her with affection and want to commemorate her life and commitment to the music.
