Dopo il brano prodotto al volo a sostegno dei rifugiati in fuga dalla guerra in Ucraina (Turn Those War Drums Down) torna a farsi sentire con altrettanta urgenza il duo Spaceheads, ovvero il ragazzo pallido Andy Diagram in fraterna alleanza - ormai più che trentennale - con Richard Harrison. Quattro i brani registrati nella fattoria nel Cheshire di quest'ultimo scelti per l'ep Rust, con le parole introduttive di William Burroughs circa lo stato delle cose: "What does the money machine eat? Altra antica perla che Corbett vs. Dempsey ha voluto recuperare in cd è Chirps, l'incontro di Steve Lacy con Evan Parker, entrambi al sax soprano, registrato dal vivo al Summer Music berlinese del luglio 1985. L'album uscì in cd già nel 1991, in un'edizione arricchita di un quarto d'ora di ulteriori cinguettii notturni catturati dopo concerto, ma questa ripristina la versione originale Fmp-Saj del 1986.

What could possibly happen when two ultimate masters of soprano saxophone square off for their only recording of duets? Chirps is the only place to find out. Steve Lacy – the one who planted the flag for soprano saxophone in the ground of modern jazz, who established its iconic status, who devoted himself to the axe with monkish devotion, who brought shakuhachi breath and stairstep melody into its upper-register antics. Evan Parker – arguably the one who pushed the instrument the furthest post-Coltrane, the technical marvel, the polyphonist, the one willing to immerse in the instrument’s harshest environs and find things of radiant beauty. Performed in Berlin at the Haus am Waldsee in July, 1985, it was every bit the chamber concert - super intimate and interactive, gorgeously recorded by FMP’s Jost Gebers in an ideal acoustic room.

Corbett vs. Dempsey pubblica in cd per la prima volta in modo integrale - alla versione apparsa nel 1993 in coppia con The Death of the Rare Bird Ymir era infatti stato tolto qualche minuto, per ragioni di spazio - uno degli album più belli del compianto Hans Reichel (1949-2011): Bonobo Beach, fulgida gemma della collana Fmp fin dal suo primo apparire, nel 1981.

Subtitled “some more guitar solos,” Bonobo Beach was German guitarist and instrument inventor Hans Reichel’s fourth and final record of solo guitar works. After this record, Reichel would turn much of his attention to the bowed wooden-tongued instrument he created called the daxophone. Reichel recorded the six tracks at his home in Wuppertal in April, 1981, and in the process made what might be his masterpiece. These are not just some more guitar solos. Concentrating largely on acoustic guitar with no frets as well as his electric pick-behind-the-bridge guitar, he transforms tones into crystalline formations – patience with resonances, attention to silence, formation of symmetries around a common sonic point, jetting notes that arc and spread and then hover. This CD reissue, licensed directly from FMP, restores Reichel’s original artwork and design for the LP, as well as an amusing insert tracking the development of his guitars from 1972-1981. A beautiful, essential document from one of the great outsider guitarists of all time.

With A House of Call, Heiner Goebbels peels back his most significant layer of multimedia music for the stage. This self-styled “imaginary notebook” incorporates archival recordings of prayers, songs, and other speech acts into dialogic relationships with a full orchestra. Much of what we hear is old and anonymous, barely hanging by a thread of preservation and never imaginable in a concert setting. And yet, here it all is, wired together like some elaborate lie detector of our shared past, pinging with increasing frequency to signal every denial of complicity by proxy. Tempting as it might be to view such a project through an archaeological or ethnographic lens, to do so would strengthen the very contradictions it wishes to dilute in its reckonings of time and place. “The music is a direct response to the complexity and roughness of the voices” says Goebbels in his liner note, pointing also to the radiance thereof against the opacity of present traumas.

Kate Westbrook inaugura oggi a Modbury, nel Devon, presso la Brownston Gallery - che proprio con lei aprì i battenti dieci anni fa - la collezione con i suoi dipinti del periodo più recente, segnato dal lockdown, intitolata Writing the Song. La presenta lei stessa: "Over the past decade my subject as a painter has been the Classical one of the nude in a landscape. The landscape has been Dartmoor and the figures the mythical Diana and Actæon. With the recent pandemic my focus necessarily changed. During lockdown the activities of daily life filled my horizons. For Mike and for me the orbit of our lives became home and our immediate surroundings in South Devon. Looking for the larger meaning in small things, I started a series of oils and watercolours I have called Writing the Song. When young, I trained as a painter and music came later in my life. The two disciplines inform one another and both are central to me. These most recent paintings have uncovered a new seam, and the journey is just beginning."

Il concerto che il quartetto Transmutation - cioè Derek Bailey, DJ Disk, Bill Laswell e Jack DeJohnette - diede al Deutsches Jazz Festival di Francoforte il 7 giugno 1997 è piuttosto noto tra appassionati e intenditori, fu ripreso negli studi televisivi della Hessischer Rundfunk e poi variamente diffuso in tempi successivi (una versione è tuttora presente su YT). The Residents’ God in 3 Persons (a collaboration with media artist John Sanborn) is a propulsive and brooding musical about madness. The Residents’ anonymous lead singer performs as disgraced preacher Mr. X, who tells an improbable tale of encounters with a pair of ambiguously gendered conjoined twins, who might be miracle workers. God in 3 Persons confronts audiences with the horrors of losing your soul while attempting to attain perfection. This version contains all of the songs from the 1988 album, making it the definitive version of the show.

Purtroppo anche Randy Rose, voce principale dei Residents, muore. Inevitabilmente, forse, ma solo per fini narrativi, per ora: come stiano realmente - si fa per dire - le cose, lo sa chi ha seguito la prima del film Triple Trouble, presentato venerdì scorso al Chicago Underground Film Festival.
