Black Truffle Records si incarica di riportare alla luce un raro documento prodotto nel 1980 da David Toop assieme a Max Eastley, Steve Beresford e Paul Burwell, con l'impiego intensivo e poco ortodosso di oggetti e strumenti dinamici rotanti e oscillanti, fatti risuonare e ripresi al volo in più occasioni in studio e all'aperto: Whirled Music.
Reissue of landmark UK release originally released on Quartz in 1980. Remastered version includes a 24 page booklet with archival materials and notes from David Toop. Black Truffle is honoured to present the first ever reissue of Whirled Music by Max Eastley, Steve Beresford, Paul Burwell and David Toop, one of the key documents of the inventive and energetic scene around the London Musicians Collective in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Originally released on Toop’s own Quartz label in 1980, the LP features a remarkable series of performances made entirely with whirled and swung instruments and objects. Presented in glorious cassette-recorded room fidelity, the LP’s first side features a single extended live performance in which percussive chattering, resonant gong-like tones, mysterious wind tones and swells of delirious noise join together to create a sonic landscape as reminiscent of an environmental recording (wind in the trees, the squawking of birds) as of an ethnographic recording of the music of an unknown civilization. Although purely acoustic, the music has an unstable, dispersed quality reminiscent of the pioneering live electronics of the Sonic Art Union or even early Voice Crack. The LP’s second side presents a series of shorter excerpts, including some beautifully sparse outdoor recordings where the sounds of the whirled instruments blend indistinguishably into the backdrop of environmental sounds.

Il calendario di concerti e iniziative non ne risentirà, ed è anzi tutto pronto per riprendere regolarmente da martedì prossimo al nuovo indirizzo di 55 West 13th Street. Tuttavia oggi è un giorno cruciale per il locale newyorkese The Stone, fondato tredici anni fa da John Zorn, con l'ultimo concerto nella storica sede tra Avenue C e 2nd Street. Auguri!

Sembra forse rientrato l'allarme sulle condizioni di salute di Keith Tippett - settant'anni lo scorso agosto - che ha dovuto cancellare un concerto in programma ieri pomeriggio a Bristol e procedere a urgente ricovero in ospedale. Al suo posto ha suonato l'amico e collega Matthew Bourne. Chris Potts era presente all'evento e ha riferito: "Keith's friend and fellow pianist Matthew Bourne produced a memorable performance. We were informed Keith had had a heart attack but was recovering very well at Southmead hospital (Bristol). Us concert-goers signed a Get Well card that the organisers had thought to get. Best wishes to Keith!". Auguri di cuore Keith, davvero!

The London Musicians’ Collective (LMC) was founded in the mid-1970’s by a small group of experimental and improvising musicians in London, United Kingdom. In tune with the nature of improvisation and the cultural politics of the time, the organisation was based on collective principles, with an open membership whose responsibility it was to decide policy and initiate activities through attendance at monthly meetings. Over the next three decades it evolved as an open membership collective attracting successive generations of musicians, improvisers, sound poets, sound artists, instrument builders and performance artists interested in pursuing their practice outside the commercial criteria of the music business.

L'improvvisa perdita tre giorni fa di Didier Lockwood e quasi concomitante il compleanno di Christian Vander oggi - il Nostro ne fa settanta! - creano certamente subbuglio emotivo in molti seguaci delle avventure musicali dell'uno e dell'altro, e di quanti ricordano come queste fossero intrecciate nel periodo dei rispettivi esordi. Un pensiero rivolto a entrambi viene espresso al sito KoSmïk muZïk: "Oui, bon anniversaire Christian, bien que certainement affecté par le départ soudain et brutal de Didier. 70 ans aujourd'hui, 55 ans de carrière toutes formations confondues, des milliers de dates de concerts, des dizaines et des dizaines de disques, des compositions majeures de la musique contemporaine, des milliers de p'tits gars et de p'tites filles toujours sous l'envoutement, franchement, pour tout ça et pour tout le reste, pour hier, pour aujourd'hui et pour demain, merci Christian! E' di pochi giorni fa l'inaugurazione sul web di uno spazio interamente dedicato al compianto Phil Miller, pensato per raccogliere in forma organica vari materiali biografici, musicali, fotografici, storici e informativi, con attenzione alle molte tappe della lunga carriera del Nostro e un occhio di riguardo per il ricordo e il contributo di amici e sostenitori. A fianco della cospicua discografia ufficiale già fanno capolino una raccolta di partiture annotate di celebri brani e un prezioso archivio di registrazioni inedite: Phil Miller - The Legacy.
Scrive il collega musicista e amico Doug Boyle, uno dei responsabili del sito web assieme alla vedova di Phil, Herm Mew, e il figlio Kyle: "My good friend Phil Miller was a highly significant figure on the progressive music scene right from its inception. I know he needs little introduction. Hatfields, Matching Mole, National Health, In Cahoots and beyond... Shortly after Phil sadly passed over last October, Phil’s wife Herm and her son Kyle began to plan a legacy site to celebrate the man and his music. I came on board as an audio archivist and a few weeks back we began the vast task of going through boxes of cassette tapes, DATs, photos and scores with a view to making this material generally and freely available. There is no commerce here. Phil wanted all his music available for free. We now have a deep site that we are ready to launch and will be expanding quickly as we add content. Particularly we have many hours of unheard-of archive recordings now being digitised and a couple up on the site already. There are also endless photos, documents and some fascinating family background info all to be added. We wanted an organic site that would grow so we welcome your comments and would be very happy for all interactions and contributions. This has been an emotional process for us all but rewarding and positive. I am proud to be an admin on this site and looking forward to seeing you over there. La newyorkese Mode Records recupera tre storici lavori di Joan La Barbara concepiti tra il 1976 e il 1981 attorno a concetti di spazializzazione e di scultura sonora, rivisti e corretti (Autumn Signal e As Lightning Comes In Flashes) o finora inediti (Cyclone): The Immersive Early Music of Joan La Barbara, disponibile in regolare cd e in Blu-ray ad alta definizione.
Over the past four decades, Joan La Barbara has created a number of multi-channel works that were designed to be heard in quadraphonic sound and other unusual spatial arrangements of speakers. These works were initially performed in concert using multiple speakers and various systems designed to allow movement of sound from speaker to speaker.
To have these vintage works available in a contemporary format is to bring back to life works that have been nearly lost for several decades. For the surround sound format to be used for sonic art works is to enhance the viability of this medium as well as to preserve, in their original conceptual form, works that were created to immerse the audience in the artist’s sonic vision.

I tempi son quasi maturi - benché duri, come indica l'allusivo titolo - per la pubblicazione del quarto e ultimo box antologico in vinile dei Pere Ubu: Les Haricots Sont Pas Salés 1987-1991, contenente gli album del periodo Fontana (e della partecipazione di Chris Cutler, fino a un certo punto) escluso Story Of My Life ma incluso un Lost Album di inediti e brani aggiuntivi solo in parte diffusi in precedenza. Il restauro sonoro è uno degli ultimi atti compiuti per il gruppo dal fedelissimo Paul Hamann, nel cruciale ruolo ereditato dal padre Ken fin dal 1980. Dovrebbe esser pronto ad aprile, alla vigilia di un nuovo ciclo di concerti in Europa, The MonkeyNet Tour.
Here we have Pere Ubu between 1987 and 1991 with three phenomenal pop albums, together with the ‘Lost Album’, an 11-track record of demos that sounds like they’d loosened the nut and bolts of the genre even further. Four of these tracks, ‘Around The Fire’,’ Down By The River’, ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ and ‘Invisible Man’ were recorded as demos for the album originally designed to follow ‘Cloudland’. Referred to by the band as ‘The Lost Album’ they are now joined with songs from ‘Cloudland’ that wouldn’t fit on the original vinyl release due to the length limitations of vinyl. The record also includes a tribute to Van Dyke Parks ‘Wine Dark Sparks’ and ‘Bang The Drum’ inspired by a Van Dyke Parks song. Genius.
Remastered by Paul Hamann at Suma Studio in February 2017 and designed by John Thompson, the four LP box set will be released on 4th April 2018. Pere Ubu will also be on the road across Europe through May and June 2018.

Due pubblicazioni di Smog Veil Records mettono al centro dell'attenzione il geniale Allen Ravenstine, recuperando dagli archivi suoi rari materiali di inizio-metà anni Settanta - precedenti cioè la fondazione e l'esordio dei Pere Ubu - rimasti finora in tutto o in parte inediti: The Mysticism of Sound & Cosmic Language (1972-73), in carico al collettivo Hy Maya guidato da Robert Bensick, e soprattutto Terminal Drive (1975), realizzato in proprio con l'aiuto di Albert Dennis.
Terminal Drive is studio recording of a mythical piece of electro-acoustic music composed and performed in 1975 by Allen Ravenstine (b. May 9, 1950 in Canton, OH) with assistance from Albert Dennis on string bass. Terminal Drive’s significance in terms of Cleveland underground music cannot be understated and has been cited as partially responsible for Ravenstine’s invitation to co-form the musical unit Pere Ubu in September 1975. Ravenstine gained recognition for his unusual and inventive synthesizer work in Pere Ubu, which he would also contribute to other groups such as Red Crayola and David Thomas & The Wooden Birds as well as his solo work.

E a sostegno di Resonance FM si mobilitano anche This Is Not This Heat, tornando là dove due anni fa ebbe inizio il loro nuovo inizio (“This doesn't feel like nostalgia but a new beginning”). Tutto esaurito anche stavolta al Cafe Oto, naturalmente.
Within their two albums and one EP This Heat perfected a strange and volatile new strain of avant-garde rock that time has proved to be massively influential, a blueprint for much that would follow: post-rock, math rock, homemade musique concrète, experimental electronica. Although widely considered to be post-punk’s finest, they actually began performing their music in the early days of London’s punk era. Ahead of their time, their music sounds as startlingly original and relevant, live and on record, as the day it was created. Exactly 40 years to the day of their first gig in 1976 the two surviving members (Charles Bullen and Charles Hayward) of the original trio came together with a large group of collaborators to play under the project title of This Is Not This Heat. Selling out a two day residency at Café Oto in a matter of hours, the consensus was unanimous that all present had been witness to something of cultural significance. Flooded with invitations from around the world, 2017 saw This Is Not This Heat take to the road. Today they return to Cafe Oto for a benefit for Resonance FM, presented in association with I-D.A Projects.

Dirty Songs play Dirty Songs is the musical offshoot of a project conceived by artist Maxime Rossi, originating in (among other things) speculations on the (then unreleased) legendary Pink Floyd “John Latham” recordings (1967) and FBI investigations (1964) into subversive and obscene messages supposedly buried within the recorded lyrics of The Kingsmen’s “Louie Louie”. Developed through conversations between Maxime Rossi and David Toop and through support from Fondation Fiminco & MRAC, these ideas metamorphosed into the band and recordings known as Dirty Songs, existing both as audio recordings and audio-visual elements of Maxime Rossi’s installation Christmas On Earth Continued, exhibited at MRAC in November 2017.

Prosegue la pubblicazione sul web della serie di videoritratti prodotti negli ultimi anni da Blanca Regina assieme a Steve Beresford e Pierre Bouvier Patron per Unpredictable, su indicazione della British Music Collection, intervistando musicisti e operatori attivi nell'area della musica improvvisata inglese. Dopo Beresford, Maggie Nicols, Peter Cusack e Terry Day sono attesi nelle prossime settimane gli episodi riguardanti la stessa Regina e David Toop.
Unpredictable: Conversations with Improvisers is a collection of videos that have grown out of deep research into the nature of free improvisation, its history in the UK and its international connections. The videos respond to the urgent need to investigate the genre and its rich legacy. Research and filming began in 2011 and it was directed and produced by artist, curator and educator Blanca Regina in collaboration with Steve Beresford and Pierre Bouvier Patron. The series was commissioned by Sound and Music for the 50th anniversary of the British Music Collection.
The series focuses on twelve active performers, interviewing pioneers like Terry Day and Maggie Nicols and, from the second generation, Steve Beresford, David Toop and Peter Cusack. Women have always been an important presence in free improvisation but this has not always been reflected in how the genre is seen. In this series we made a point of including more women than men, particularly women with developing careers in the field.
Many of these videos have been filmed in the context of Unpredictable events, and others have followed the artists into key London venues like Cafe Oto and Iklectik. These are two of the most important venues in the UK for freely improvised music – a genre that sprang to life in the mid ‘60s, has always had a strong community in London, but is often not fully acknowledged.

Non bastasse la messe di brani aggiuntivi e inediti che accompagna le edizioni aumentate dei capolavori storici dei Residents della neo-serie pREServed, ci pensa Homer Flynn - protagonista di un ciclo di buffi edufilm nei panni di Captain Doc - a gettar luce su alcuni retroscena, o quanto meno ad alludervi, circa la realizzazione di quegli album. Se tra qualche settimana sarà la volta di Duck Stab, Buster & Glen e Fingerprince, per ora si svelano la provenienza di tutti quei giornali nell'indimenticabile filmato promozionale di Third Reich 'n' Roll, e il ruolo di tale Barry Eiland nella gestazione di Meet The Residents (e di Smelly Tongues, in particolare).
