La piccola - anzi, piccolissima - editrice Bracketpress con sede in Rochdale, Lancashire (Regno Unito) specializzata nella pubblicazione di quaderni, libercoli, pamphlet e stampe artigianali a tiratura limitata, produce in pochi esemplari il box Error Australis contenente scritti del compianto Daevid Allen, con storie, immagini, poesie, schizzi e annotazioni, prime apparizioni dei Pot Head Pixies e diari di recenti viaggi con Gong e University of Errors. Così scrivono del progetto i promotori dell'iniziativa Christian Brett e Alice Smith, che già in passato hanno lavorato con Allen - pur senza mai incontrarlo di persona - pubblicandone il libello poetico/politico Soundbites 4 tha reVelation 2012: "The idea for this project was first mooted up at a System 7 / The Orb all-nighter in Manchester a couple of years ago. Our friend, The Tin Man, had three pieces of work with him that Daevid was keen to see published, and after the work we did with him in 2011, wondered if we would be up for it. Of course! It was great to have the opportunity to work with Daevid on soundbites 4 tha reVelation 2012, and was another one of those occasions where I ended up working with someone whose work I’d first come across over 30 years ago when the Gong LPs Magick Brother and Floating Anarchy 1977 were being passed around the school yard. Work on Error Australis began just as Daevid went off on a tour of Japan with You Me & Us. After a lengthy period of radio silence we heard Daevid had been diagnosed with cancer, and was in hospital having intensive treatment. We are gutted that Daevid never got to see this box set published – the book proofs were delivered to The Tin Man on Friday 13th March, the day Daevid passed."

Prosegue l'azione di recupero da parte della londinese Demon dei famigerati concerti reunion prodotti nel 1990 a Nottingham dalla serie televisiva Bedrock: lo fa nella propria linea economica di cd e dvd Access All Areas - dove si trova di tutto di più e di peggio, non soltanto vecchie glorie canterburyane in momenti di non massimo spolvero - pubblicando anche il concerto dei Gong, dopo quelli di Hatfield and The North e Caravan qualche mese fa. Con Daevid Allen e Gilli Smyth c'erano in quell'occasione Didier Malherbe, Pip Pyle, Keith Bailey, Stephan Lewry e Paul Noble. Ne scrisse all'epoca Phil Howitt, su Facelift: "The full gig featured huge chunks of material from the Trilogy albums, although lamentably little from You, except for the unscreened Master Builder, preceded by swirling keyboards and some Gilli Smyth poetry before the more familiar chanting. The televised version of events probably didn't really take off until the second half of the show, when the long medley from Angel's Egg and the track Flying Teapot allowed the band to develop the sort of cosmic jam most people would associate then with: all-embracing layers of sound incorporating space whisper, glissando guitar and keyboards, but most particularly the expressive soloing of Didier Malherbe. Malherbe was given frequent centrestage, most dynamically during the encore using a heavily-treated sax to recreate all the trappings of a classic keyboard solo. A dispensation was given to more recent Gong directions with the closing chant You Are I And I Am You, a piece ancient in origin but wholly relevant to the homeliness of recent Daevid Allen gigs. A truly moving finale."

Un pugno di performance pianistiche solitarie risalenti ai primi anni ottanta, sottratte in parte al turbinio dell'avventura Rip Rig + Panic. Le ha raccolte di recente Mark Springer per la propria etichetta Exit: The Rip Rig + Panic Piano Solos.

Mark Springer is a pianist and composer who has been playing professionally and performing since his teens when he formed the groundbreaking Rip Rig + Panic, a band that included former members of The Pop Group and lead singer Neneh Cherry. When they split after three years together The Times commented that “their too-brief career will not have been in vain if it has served at least to launch the pianist Mark Springer.” Releasing several solo albums for Virgin prior to setting up the Exit label as a vehicle for his releases, Mark has spent his career developing a distinctive sound world combining his skill and virtuosity at the piano with an impetus for creating a painterly sound/landscape. His own paintings adorn the majority of Exit releases. The Rip Rig + Panic Piano Solos is a CD set comprising mostly unreleased recordings made by Mark during the years that RR+P were active.

Racchiuso nella tipica scatolina metallica che sempre protegge le delicate autoproduzioni in cdr di Confront Recordings circola da qualche settimana un documento del trio di improvvisazione IST - Rhodri Davies, Simon H. Fell e Mark Wastell - risalente all'aprile 2001, con la registrazione integrale di un concerto tenuto a New York immediatamente alla vigilia di una Company Week convocata da Derek Bailey presso il Tonic. Documento raro e inedito, cui per l'occasione si aggiunge un brano - ripreso durante i lavori della Company - con ospite John Zorn.

IST went to New York in April 2001 to participate in Derek Bailey's Company Week at Tonic. Before Company proper started however, the two UK groups (the other being the Derek Bailey / Will Gaines duo) took part in a preview concert playing in their habitual groupings. The resulting trio recordings have never been previously released; as a special bonus the album also includes an unreleased quartet of IST + John Zorn, which took place during the Company event itself. A real collector's item!

Il concerto anniversario 44 1/2 degli Art Zoyd a Carmaux (Francia) il prossimo settembre non rimarrà fatto isolato: altri appuntamenti vi faranno seguito in Francia - a Valenciennes e a Bourgoin-Jallieu - e a Tokyo, per la seconda edizione del Rock in Opposition Japan.
Il gruppo è già da tempo al lavoro per la realizzazione tecnica e musicale degli eventi - qualche fase delle prove si segue tramite Vimeo - e fa affidamento sul sostegno di pubblico ed estimatori per affrontare parte delle spese di produzione. La campagna di crowdfunding ha preso il via presso la piattaforma europea Ulule: "Le 19 septembre 2015 sera historique pour Art Zoyd et ses fans! En effet, nous donnerons à Carmaux le premier concert de la tournée anniversaire  du groupe, dans le cadre du RIO 2015 (Rock In Opposition)! Un merci tout particulier à Michel Besset, son directeur, et premier producteur d'Art Zoyd en 1976, d’avoir exprimé le souhait de voir se réunir le groupe à l’occasion de son festival, autour de ses fondateurs, Gérard Hourbette et Thierry Zaboitzeff. Yes we can! Ce projet de tournée avec 9 musiciens nécessite un apport en production conséquent que nous n'avons pas bouclé: déchiffrage collectif de partitions restées pour certaines manuscrites, orchestration, répétition, programmation des machines: certains musiciens n'avaient jamais joué ensemble avant les actuelles répétitions et l'heure est à la transmission. D'autres morceaux sont en cours de réorchestration et révèlent une remarquable intensité entre les musiciens qui se les réapproprient parfois près de 30 ans après leur création. Alfreda (Alfie) Benge is a lyricist and illustrator. She was born in 1940 in Austria to a Polish mother, and came to England in 1947. She has been married to the musician Robert Wyatt since 1974 and, in a unique partnership, has produced illustrations for all of his solo albums for the past forty years, beginning with his acknowledged classic, Rock Bottom.  She has also contributed lyrics to many of his compositions. Benge studied painting at Camberwell Art School, Graphics at the London School of Printing, Film at the RCA, worked in film, and served as an assistant to the editor Graeme Clifford for Nicolas Roeg’s Don't Look Now (1973). As well as providing cover artwork for all Wyatt’s solo albums, she has produced album covers other musicians including Fred Frith, Klimperei, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci. She has illustrated two children's books written by Ivor Cutler.

E' il primo titolo della piccola etichetta londinese Fataka a esser pubblicato in vinile, e il quarto di Phil Minton a riferirsi nel titolo ai crafen - personale metafora di avidità e grettezza, dettata da un episodio narrato nelle note di copertina - tanto da costituire il proseguimento, forse anzi il compimento, di una ideale serie di album in solo realizzati nel corso degli anni con la voce quale unica risorsa: A Doughnut's End.

"I was in New York in 1980, standing on a street corner in the then notorious Bowery area waiting for a lift to a gig. It had been snowing and the street was deep in slush. Simultaneously, a Bowery character and a jogger passed in front of me on the pavement, the jogger splashing slush onto the old chap's clothing. "What the fuck," he shouted as the jogger disappeared up the street, then turning to me he said, "the fuckin' asshole, what the fuck does he think he's doin', you gotta run to the South Bronx and back five fuckin' times before you lose a couple of fuckin' pounds. The trouble is people eat to fuckin' much. The other day the mission took us out on a trip to Coney Island and some of the guys had fuckin' donuts in both hands! “Donuts in both hands, donuts in both hands" was his mantra as went on his way, after saying "have a nice day sir".
A Doughnut in Both Hands, my first solo album, was originally a metaphor for greed and avarice with some references to the pointless slaughter of the First World War. It would have been more obvious with gold or oil in the title, but that’s not the way it happened. I didn't initially think it would be a series for solo singing, which is what, nearly forty years and four doughnut albums later, it has turned out to be. "Doughnuts" means I take a less spontaneous approach to the work than on the many improvised music recordings I've made with other musicians."

Collecting the bracing and brilliant Pere Ubu in their earliest incarnation, with the devastating one-two knockout blow of 1978 studio bookends "The Modern Dance" and "Dub Housing", followed by "The Hearpen Singles (1975-1977)" and a red hot live set "Manhattan", recorded at the legendary Max's Kansas City in 1977; "Elitism For The People 1975-78" serves as a gut punch. Working from the original 2-track analogue mix tapes, Paul Hamann at Suma transferred to digital at the highest resolution available, at least four times the resolution of CD audio. Then, the tracks were carefully re-mastered by sonic architect Brian Pyle so as to capture the unique qualities within; the resulting listening experience is truly mind-blowing.

Sub Rosa propone una ristampa in vinile e in cd del terzo splendido album degli Art Zoyd, Génération Sans Futur, uscito in origine per Atem Records nel 1980. La versione in cd include, pescandola da altra fonte, anche Les fourmis, uno dei celebri quadretti di Deux Images De La Cité Imbécile. In formazione - allora nel pieno della propria forza compositiva ed espressiva - c'erano Patricia Dallio, Alain Eckert, Gilles Renard, Jean-Pierre Soarez, Gérard Hourbette e Thierry Zaboitzeff, confortati nel brano che titola l'album dal sostegno dell'ospite Daniel Denis e ottimamente seguiti nelle registrazioni da Etienne Conod, presso quei Sunrise Studios di Kirchberg (Svizzera) pienamente nel mito del 'Rock in Opposition'.

Génération Sans Futur ('Generation Without a Future'), Art Zoyd's third LP released in 1980 through Atem Records, comes back to the sound (and lineup, plus Daniel Denis/Univers Zero) of the group's first Symphonie Pour le Jour où Brûleront les Cités. The 17-minute 'La Ville' is a powerful epic including Thierry Zaboïtzeff's prehistoric grunts, complex time shifts, and a tribal/ritualistic feel once again close to the spirit of Magma. But unlike Musique Pour l'Odyssée (title track of Art Zoyd's second album), the music here is fast-paced, less atmospheric, more organized. It plays on the tension that will remain the basis of Art Zoyd's originality: a tribal, atavistic feel contrasting with contemporary classical aesthetics. Actually, Génération Sans Futur may be leaning more toward the contemporary side, as exemplified by pieces like 'Divertissement,' 'Trois Miniatures,' and the manic 'Speedy Gonzales.' 'Génération Sans Futur,' on the other hand, taps into a more visceral progressive rock format and percussionist Daniel Denis actually gets to play drums for a couple of minutes, giving the piece an unusual drive. Ospite in studio del programma radiofonico The Interesting Alternative Show di Steve Davis e Kavus Torabi, su Phoenix FM, c'era lunedì scorso Yumi Hara Cawkwell, a proporre tra le altre cose ascolti, dettagli e particolari riguardanti il recente album Logos, degli Artaud Beats, e l'imminente Wheels within Wheels, nuovo capitolo del suo duo con Guy Harries. Un festoso evento per segnalarne l'uscita - che più o meno coincide con il compleanno di Yumi - è in programma a Londra il prossimo 15 luglio, alla Redchurch Brewery di Cambridge Heath. Ci saranno anche Davis, Marina Organ, Tim Hodgkinson e Geoff Leigh.

I quattro Rova vennero a Rovereto (Tn) - tentati di chiederne la cittadinanza onoraria, una volta sul posto, sedotti dalla forte assonanza dei rispettivi nomi - per un concerto totalmente acustico presso il Palazzo dell'Istruzione, il 19 marzo 1995: per la gioia dei più appassionati nel pubblico avevano in serbo un paio di preziosi brani di Lindsay Cooper, Face in the Crowd e Can of Worms, in largo anticipo rispetto alle registrazioni poi effettuate per l'album Bingo. A proposito di rare testimonianze sul web di cui far tesoro, accettandone le qualità audio o video magari non conformi ai relativi standard, queste le raccolse all'epoca Michele Piccolrovazzi, in un fermento di attività extraterritoriali rispetto alla locale casa madre, il vivace Centro Sociale Clinamen. A proposito di rari documenti sul web di cui far tesoro, c'è su YouTube un filmato del concerto dell'Unlimited Saxophone Company di Elton Dean all'Europa Jazz Festival di Le Mans (Francia): era il 12 maggio 1991, un movimentato pomeriggio del festival che aveva in programma anche la Drum Orchestra di Trevor Watts e il debutto di Short Wave (Hugh Hopper con gli speciali amici Phil Miller, Didier Malherbe e Pip Pyle). Con Dean c'erano Paul Dunmall, Simon Picard, Trevor Watts, Paul Rogers e Tony Levin.

Keith Tippett lo si vede - si fa per dire - in azione anche in un raro documento video del quartetto Hopper / Dean / Tippett / Gallivan rintracciabile attraverso Vimeo: le riprese dovrebbero risalire al 10 giugno 1977, data del concerto al Third Eye Centre di Glasgow, appena pochi giorni dopo le registrazioni di studio poi confluite nell'album Mercy Dash.

Tornano a farsi vivi i messicani Decibel con un nuovo doppio album, Insecto Mecánico, che raccoglie e organizza in Reliquias e Premoniciones registrazioni sparse effettuate tra il 2011 e il 2014. Della formazione di fine anni settanta - quella che partecipò con un brano al Recommended Records Sampler del 1982 - resistono ancora Carlos Robledo e Walter Schmidt.

Decibel are an on-again/off again legendary Mexican chamber/rock group with improvisational leanings who released their 1st album in the late 70's, but are probably best known for their very fine contribution to the excellent and fondly remembered Recommended Records Sampler double album. This 2015 release consists of recordings from 2011-2014 and features the leadership of original member and leader Walter Schmidt, with appearances by Carlos Alvarado, Ramses Luna (Cabezas de Acera, Luz de Riada), Juan Carlos Ruiz (Arteria) and other musicians.

Gran periodo frenetico quello di queste settimane per Bing Selfish, con concerti, letture pubbliche e vari appuntamenti dal vivo, la pubblicazione quasi in contemporanea di album vecchi e nuovi (uno, attesissimo, in coppia con l'alleato di sempre, Rob Murphy), la riedizione in forma di e-book di alcuni suoi testi poetici finora apparsi al blog Selfish City (Selfish City Will Not Fall), e un racconto inedito pronto a esser rivelato entro poche ore (A.N.D./O-R).
I talenti di Bing scrittore e affabulatore non sono certo una novità: con un po' di fortuna si può trovare ancora disponibile via Bandcamp qualche copia della strepitosa fanzine da lui curata e redatta negli anni ottanta, El Frenzy. Intanto prende il via domani una nuova serie radiofonica per la londinese Resonance FM, All Things Selfish: cinque episodi metanarrativi in onda ogni sabato - con repliche il lunedì - dalle 12.00 alle 13.30, ora locale. ReR ha in distribuzione qualche copia di un'edizione del box degli Henry Cow uscita di recente in Giappone, contenente il celebre poster - nella versione del 1990 - con le famiglie e le principali discendenze artistiche del gruppo rappresentate ad albero genealogico, nonché i singoli album racchiusi in una confezione cartonata a imitazione degli originali in vinile. Così lo propone all'attenzione dei collezionisti Chris Cutler: "Legend, Unrest, In Praise of Learning, Western Culture - all in cardboard original release facsimile covers. This is a limited Japanese edition of 500 copies of which 32 numbered copies are available outside Japan. These pressings are identical to the ReR releases, so these are really only for collectors. And they are not cheap: 28 pounds each, or 100 pounds the set, which comes with an archive "Henry Cow family tree" from 1990."

Sono in corso a Marsiglia e dintorni i festeggiamenti per i trent'anni di attività dell'associazione Aide aux Musiques Innovatrices (A.M.I.), fondata nel 1985 da Ferdinand Richard, e altrettanti sono gli anni del Festival MIMI.
