Inconstant Sol recupera dagli archivi radiofonici della BBC una speciale puntata di Jazz on 3 dedicata a Elton Dean, con una session registrata all'interno dell'appartamento del sassofonista nel giugno 2010: c'erano Alex Maguire, Jim Dvorak, Simon Picard, Paul Rogers e Tony Levin.

This completely improvised set was recorded in June 2010 in the living room of Elton Dean's flat in London's Dalston. Four years after his death it still contained posters, tapes and memorabilia that provided poignant reminders of Dean's life and work, and plenty of inspiration for the musicians who came together to remember him. Just a few days after this session was recorded the flat was due to be cleared out and refurbished.

A compensare in parte il mancato appuntamento oggi a Londra giunge notizia dell'album che ritrae insieme Evan Parker e Fred Frith in quello che fu all'epoca il loro terzo incontro in assoluto nella formula del duo: Hello, I Must Be Going (su etichetta Victo), registrato a maggio l'anno scorso durante il Festival International de Musique Actuelle di Victoriaville.
Così recensì quel concerto Bruce Lee Gallanter, di Downtown Music Gallery: "Although Fred Frith and Evan Parker are both British and come from around the same scene/generation of Europe's finest free improvisers, this set was only the their third duo performance. Both of these men are master improvisers and this disc/set captures them at their best. Evan played mostly soprano sax and Fred often had his guitar on his lap with a table filled with objects: an e-bow, chopsticks, an ashtray, paintbrush, etc. Each of these men have their own vocabulary of sounds so they took their time to work their way through a variety of sounds and textures. It helps to actually see what Mr. Frith is doing since he has so many odd/unique ways to play his guitar. At one point, Fred repeatedly tapped on his strings, using his fingers and/or a chopstick shoved between the strings on the neck. The effect was most hypnotic with Evan also playing circular lines, both men weaving their strands together. As Fred would alter his approach to his guitar being held in his hands or on his lap. Evan, who is one of the masters of circular breathing, would also alter his sound to bring the two closer together into a similar exploratory zone. As the set progressed, the exchange got quicker and closer as if they were finishing each other's sentences. This was one of those magical sets where everything works just right, the blend of ideas seamless."

Michael Mantler ha portato in scena pochi giorni fa al festival jazz di Moers l'importante progetto costruito attorno alle composizioni giovanili del 1968 da lui prodotte per la Jazz Composer’s Orchestra, affidate in forma riveduta e aggiornata alla Nouvelle Cuisine Big Band condotta da Christoph Cech. Performance of an older piece, this rule in classical music is generally rare in contemporary music. Composer, trumpet player, and ex-partner of Carla Bley, Michael Mantler is giving it a try. He has given some of his old compositions a once over which he had written back in 1968 as a 25-year-old for the Jazz Composer’s Orchestra. In August 2013, the updated versions were performed live with the Nouvelle Cuisine Big Band on three consecutive nights at Vienna’s Porgy & Bess. The result: an amazing piece of music.

Viene presentato domani a Londra con un concerto presso il club The Bedford il lavoro che David Cross ha condotto per recuperare, espandere e portare a nuova vita uno dei temi scaturiti oltre quarant'anni fa dalla scrittura di Starless, celebre brano dei King Crimson (nell'album Red, 1974) recentemente riproposto con perizia - e impressionante fedeltà all'originale - anche dal gruppo The Unthanks. L'album si intitola Starless Starlight, e riprende un paio di improvvisazioni condotte qualche anno fa sugli stessi temi da Robert Fripp. Al concerto prendono parte, con il violinista, David Jackson, Yumi Hara e Tony Lowe.

David Cross (ex-King Crimson) will be joined by David Jackson (ex-Van der Graaf Generator), Yumi Hara (The Artaud Beats) and Tony Lowe (producer, guitarist, composer) performing tracks from the album and, in keeping with the spirit of this venture, will individually and collectively devise, and compose original new interpretations of the Starless theme. Anything could happen... and probably will – expect the unexpected!
The story of ‘Starless Starlight’ is that of a short melody composed by David Cross and Robert Fripp that emerged as one of the key themes of the King Crimson song ‘Starless’ (1974). The tune resurfaced in two improvisations performed and recorded by Fripp at Blueberry Hill, St Louis in 2006. These recordings and the theme itself were then transformed by David Cross (and co-producer Tony Lowe) into the album ‘Starless Starlight’.

The Feldman Improvisation (Luciano Margorani: chitarra classica). Le “Feldman improvisations” sono improvvisazioni per chitarra classica dove il silenzio, le dinamiche ridotte, la lentezza, la ripetizione e la presenza di parti sia dissonanti che melodiche hanno una parte molto importante, traendo spunto dalle composizioni per pianoforte solo dell’ultimo periodo del compositore statunitense Morton Feldman (1926-1987) come “Piano”, “Triadic Memories”, “For Bunita Marcos” e ”Palais de Mari”.

ESP – Electric Solo Performance (Francesco Zago: chitarra elettrica, live electronics). La chitarra elettrica è ormai da molti decenni lo strumento popolare per eccellenza. Malgrado la sua enorme diffusione, però, il mondo della musica “leggera” e quello della composizione colta non sono ancora riusciti a incontrarsi e a integrare fino in fondo le risorse vastissime e la “modernità” di questo strumento. La solo performance di Francesco Zago accosta il repertorio colto contemporaneo alle “radici” pop dello strumento, la ciclicità del rock all’improvvisazione informale, l’ambient music al minimalismo. Il programma potrà includere brani, fra gli altri, di Eric Chasalow, Hugues Dufourt, Elliott Carter, Steve Reich, Fausto Romitelli, Elliott Sharp, oltre che dello stesso Zago.

Con il classico sestetto - Phil Minton, Kate Westbrook, Karen Street, Billy Thompson, Mike Westbrook e Steve Berry - ci sarà stavolta il coro Bath Camerata diretto da Benjamin Goodson. L'appuntamento è per domani al prestigioso Bath International Music Festival, e precede di soli pochi giorni l'avvio per i Westbrook di un'elettrizzante stagione segnata dal debutto mondiale del loro più grande sforzo compositivo e organizzativo degli ultimi tempi, A Bigger Show.

A rare chance to hear what has been described in the Independent on Sunday as perhaps the greatest work in all British jazz. Born in London’s Soho in 1775, William Blake was regarded in his lifetime as politically dangerous; Blake is now acknowledged as one of the great visionaries in British art ,  and a figure whose work resonates powerfully in the 21st century.
With strong links to the West Country, Mike Westbrook is one of the leading figures in British music, working across a multitude of genres from opera to jazz. His settings of William Blake’s poetry, originally commissioned in 1971 for the National Theatre production of Adrian Mitchell’s Tyger, have been performed throughout Europe and in New York and Australia by a succession of Westbrook ensembles.
Award-winning chamber choir, Bath Camerata, has been entertaining audiences in and around Bath, across the UK and in Europe for over 28 years. Previous winners of the national Choir of the Year competition, they are renowned for their versatility, and will sing everything from mediaeval music, through Mozart to flamenco, the Beatles and jazz.

La californiana Superior Viaduct si incarica di rimettere in circolazione in vinile l'album Barricades 3 di ZNR - cioè Hector Zazou e Joseph Racaille - prodotto artigianalmente in Francia nel 1976 per 'Les disques du Rat et du Serpent Associés' e di lì a qualche anno ripreso da Recommended Records (1981) per farne dono tra i più graditi ai sottoscrittori dell'epoca: "One of the more extraordinary groups of all time; bizarre, minimal, Satiesque, Les Six and Brasilian echoes; clear as crystal, completely impenetrable, innocent and ironic. There never was before, nor has been ever again anything quite like it".

ZNR was the French duo of Hector Zazou and Joseph Racaille (hence, Zazou 'n' Racaille) active in the mid to late '70s. Their 1976 debut, Barricade 3, is an anti-pop masterpiece that truly defies categorization. Featuring an array of seemingly dichotomous instruments (piano, synthesizers, woodwinds, electric guitar and more) as well as genuinely bizarre vocals, the album is composed of fifteen odd experiments using a loose framework of analog electronics, avant-garde rock, jazz influences, and post-structuralist études.

Steve Davis has won more professional titles in the sport than any other player, including a huge total of 28 ranking events and 53 non-ranking. He was the No.1 player in the eighties, and his most significant wins include six world championships and three Masters. He also picked up his ironic nickname ‘Interesting’ and a puppet from the satirical series Spitting Image. Remaining a household name, he has appeared on a number of popular British TV shows, including I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! in 2013. Steve continues to play snooker, and in 2013 he won the world seniors championship. Still very close with Barry Hearn, he is a world ambassador for the sport. He is also an established analyst and commentates for the BBC’s snooker coverage.
A man of many interests, Steve is a former president of the British Chess Federation and a keen amateur chess player, as well as a regular broadcaster with Phoenix FM.

E' giunta a buon fine, dopo esitazioni e ripensamenti, la collaborazione tra Boris Grebenshikov e Robert Wyatt per il brano Stella Maris, disponibile da qualche settimana via iTunes: “If I never did anything again, I’m just so happy to have made this connection with a beautiful and brave man”, ha dichiarato Wyatt.

Just months after announcing his retirement from music, Robert Wyatt has turned up guesting on a new track by Boris Grebenshikov, the 61 year old veteran of Russia’s rock underground. The track, titled Stella Maris, features Wyatt playing cornet and tenor horn alongside Grebenshikov’s group, a string quartet and a choir.
Initially inspired by The Beatles and Bob Dylan, Grebenshikov, better known as BG, formed his group Aquarium in the early 1970s. During the Soviet era Aquarium were one of the most popular and influential underground groups in Russia, even though they didn’t officially exist, as they weren’t recognised by the state bureaucracy, and had to perform mostly at unofficial clubs and private gatherings. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in the early 90s, Grebenshikov began performing and recording extensively in the West, with the likes of Dave Stewart and members of The Band among others, and today remains one of the most iconic figures in Russian music.

In uno degli spazi del Cafe Oto sono previsti incontri, concerti, laboratori, tavole rotonde, ascolti e proiezioni di documenti audio e video, con un'esposizione di materiali d'archivio e di vari manufatti artigianali e artistici forniti da Evan Parker, George Khan, David Toop, Max Eastley e Gina Southgate, oltre che dagli stessi Day e Beresford. La mostra si intitola Art of Improvisers Group Show e rimarrà aperta dal 7 al 17 maggio.

Fu con un paio di esibizioni promosse dall'itinerante Club Integral a Londra che tra l'aprile e il maggio 2013 debuttò il trio you me & us formato da Daevid Allen, Chris Cutler e Yumi Hara Cawkwell. Ed è di nuovo Club Integral - nel cui staff operano Simon King, Andrew Scott-Bolton, Robert Storey, Atsuko Kamura, Katja Heber, Chris Cornetto, Ed Baxter e vari altri del giro di Orchestre Murphy e Resonance FM - a promuovere uno speciale omaggio ad Allen domenica prossima, presso The Others in Stoke Newington. Vi prendono parte, oltre a Yumi Hara e Cutler, Kengo Sakamoto (del gruppo Koenji Hyakkei), Kazuya Uechi, Geoff Leigh e Tim Hodgkinson, con interventi in solo, duo, trio in varie combinazioni e tutti insieme, e proiezioni di alcuni filmati di you me & us in concerto che confluiranno presto in un documento dvd. Titolo dell'iniziativa è Camembert Japonaise, anticipata nella puntata di domani sera di Resonance FM Club Integral Radio Show.

Matthew Watkins riprende le pubblicazioni di podcast audio presso il suo Canterbury Sans Frontières con un episodio dedicato in gran parte a Daevid Allen - incorporando un mix curato qualche tempo fa dal DJ Adam Dawson (Adam Oko) per NTS Live - e inoltre inediti e rarità di Wyatt, Hopper e Ayers tra le altre cose. Ci sono anche due brani tratti dall'omaggio a Lindsay Cooper al Barbican di Londra lo scorso novembre.

Canterbury Sans Frontières returns after a hiatus of several months. The middle hour of this episode is of course dedicated to the late, great Daevid Allen, godfather (and Pied Piper) of the Canterbury Scene, who passed away in March, with a guest mix provided by Canterbury sound artist and DJ Adam Dawson (a.k.a. Adam Oko). Also Robert Wyatt singing an e e cummings poem set to music by John Cage, some newly released archival Hugh Hopper live recordings, a couple of pieces from the Lindsay Cooper memorial concert last year involving Henry Cow and friends, the jazz piece from which Caravan borrowed one of their most famous motifs, Kevin Ayers with the Wizards of Twiddly live in 1995, a far-out Syd Arthur remix, a solo piano version of Terry Riley's Rainbow in Curved Air, and much more...

Dal caleidoscopico Cuff Clout, splendido album di Kate Westbrook realizzato tra il 1994 e il 2001 con John Winfield e con il corposo sostegno di un gruppo di musicisti denominato per l'occasione The Skirmishers, riaffiora presso Vimeo un videomontaggio di parole e immagini ad accompagnare uno dei brani più incisivi, The Devil and the Canny Lad, scritto da Kate con le musiche di James McMillan. Altre illustri firme nell'album sono quelle di Lindsay Cooper, Barbara Thompson, Jenni Roditi, Eleanor Alberga, Errollyn Wallen, Chris Biscoe e Mike Westbrook.

With Cuff Clout Kate Westbrook presents a new take on the English music hall. The dominant form of popular entertainment throughout the early 20th century, music hall was a loose assemblage of songs and sketches, both comic and serious, spiced with political satire and sexual innuendo. In her neoteric music hall - "a music hall for the 21st century" - Kate brings together the disparate elements of traditional music hall in a thoroughly contemporary context. Her lyrics embrace tragedy and comedy, and range from high art to knock-about. By inviting eight composers from across the whole spectrum of contemporary music to set her texts, Kate has ensured a rich and surprising mix of musical genres. Kate and her accomplice John Winfield produce an astonishing variety of vocal performances and characterisations, sometimes solo, sometimes as a double act, as they move through a sequence of dramatically varied musical settings. Il libro è uscito l'anno scorso come ebook con il titolo Loggerheads and Other Stories. Da poche settimane è anche in libreria tradotto in italiano: Disaccordi imperfetti di Jonathan Coe (Feltrinelli, I Narratori, aprile 2015) raduna alcuni racconti brevi apparsi negli ultimi anni in raccolte pubblicate in Gran Bretagna e Francia da Penguin e Gallimard, assieme ad altri più recenti che andranno presto a comporre o ispirare un'ampia nuova opera, Unrest. C'è anche Nona e Tredicesima (9th & 13th), scritto quasi per sfida per ben due terzi nel modo condizionale, che l'autore ha presentato diverse volte in pubblico in forma di lettura con accompagnamento musicale - in almeno un'occasione anche con John Greaves - e che nel 2001 ha fissato assieme a Danny Manners in un bel cd realizzato con Louis Philippe su etichetta Tricatel.

Il concerto del primo maggio del Delta Saxophone Quartet - Graeme Blevins, Pete Whyman, Tim Holmes e Chris Caldwell - vede una ripresa del progetto realizzato qualche anno fa attorno alle musiche dei Soft Machine (lo splendido Dedicated To You... But You Weren't Listening, Moonjune 2007) e il debutto londinese di un nuovo lavoro (Crimson!) ispirato invece ai King Crimson. Per l'occasione con loro c'è anche il pianista Gwilym Simcock. A Londra, in St John's Smith Square, alle 19.30.

Crimson draws its inspiration from the work of the UK progressive rock band King Crimson. It follows on from the Delta Saxophone Quartet's Internationally acclaimed CD Dedicated to you but you weren't listening that reinterpreted the music of the Soft Machine. The new work Crimson unites Gwilym Simcock, one of the UK's most imaginative jazz composers with the Delta Saxophone Quartet, one of Europe's most distinguished new music ensembles. The quartet has worked closely with many leading composers having commissioned works from Gavin Bryars, Steve Martland, Joe Duddell, Hugh Hopper, Mike Westbrook, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Michael Finnissy to name a few. The quartet has always looked to extend the range/repertoire and possibilities of what a quartet of saxophones can present, combining a variety of musical genres and styles with a dynamic and informative presentation.
