Relire l'oeuvre de Robert Wyatt et de quelques-uns de ses condisciples est un exercice auquel bon nombre d'artistes d'horizons divers se sont livrés jusqu'à aujourd'hui. La singularité de cet artiste, à l'instar de Björk ou d'Evan Parker - avec lesquels il a collaboré ces dernières années - et la multiplicité des approches possibles de son répertoire, ont donné à Pascal Maupeu l'envie d'explorer à nouveau cet univers qui suscite une large palette de sensibilités, d'états : froideur, nonsense, rage (réécouter les interventions du saxophoniste Gary Windo notamment sur Rock Bottom), fragilité, générosité, solitude, complicité, mélancolie, folie, dépouillement. Dell'album dice: "This is the 3rd of my doughnut reduction series. I know things aren't getting better but I hope the singing cheers you up a bit. I would prefer to sing with other people and most of the time that's what I do. But it seems every ten years or so I need to sing a few songs on my own."

In two specially created performances for Southbank Centre's ETHER 08 festival, expressionist avant-garage rock band Pere Ubu presents the world premiere of Bring Me The Head of Ubu Roi, an adaptation of Ubu Roi (King Ubu), Alfred Jarry's landmark 1896 play that inspired the band's name and is widely seen as the precursor to the Absurdist, Dada and Surrealist art movements.
At the heart of Jarry's original production was the use of various performance media, and Pere Ubu's show reflects this with a unique visual staging by the enigmatic Brothers Quay, accomplised through intriguing stop-motion animation projections. Singer David Thomas will feature as Père Ubu, partnering Sarah-Jane Morris (ex-Communards) in the role of Mère Ubu, and the production includes an original music score by the band Pere Ubu and 10 new songs. Gagarin, aka London-based former Ludus, Nico and John Cale drummer Graham Dowdall, will contribute an electronic soundtrack.
With this part music, part spoken word, part animated production on the stage of the Queen Elizabeth Hall, David Thomas of Pere Ubu realises an ambition he has had since being turned on to Alfred Jarry as a 16-year-old high school student in Cleveland, Ohio. David Thomas said: "Jarry's ideas resonated with feelings I had about the use of abstract, concrete and synthesized sound in the narrative architecture of rock music, all tools to engage the imagination of the listener when detailing the picture told by the music and lyrics."
Ubu Roi is a play for the mind and imagination. It is a drama of ideas and grotesqueries, and a fusion of several disparate and incongruous elements. It shocked early audiences with its blend of grotesque absurdity, wild humour and coarse language. At the premiere in 1896, the very first word of Ubu Roi ("merdre," translated as "shitter") provoked a riot amongst the audience and fist fights broke out in the orchestra.
Alfred Jarry's plays in general were widely and wildly hated for their vulgarity, brutality, low comedy and complete lack of literary finish, and his work revealed a lack of respect for royalty, religion and society that prompted some to see his output as the theatrical equivalent of an anarchist bomb attack and an act of political subversion.

Gong Live At The UNcon è il primo dei concerti ripresi al celebre raduno 'Gong Family Unconventional Gathering' ad Amsterdam nel novembre 2006 ad essere pubblicato ufficialmente da Voiceprint. Un anno fa (si veda anche qui, nell'archivio di aprile 2007) chiudeva tra mobilitazioni e azioni di protesta di avventori e musicisti il piccolo ma celebre locale Tonic, luogo tra i più vitali sulla scena delle musiche improvvisate e d'avanguardia a New York, vittima di una perfida speculazione immobiliare nel Lower East Side e in zone limitrofe. Il chitarrista Alan Licht, anche alla luce della sopravvenuta crisi economica statunitense, guarda oggi con fiducia al fatto che il quartiere possa presto ritornare accessibile, nei costi e nelle condizioni, alle comunità sociali e artistiche che lo hanno animato e fortemente caratterizzato per anni. Scrive: "I loved Tonic, and along with the loss of Luna Lounge and Collective Unconscious I considered those three stakes in the heart of the Lower East Side. I've been wondering lately, if recession or worse strikes this country, who are these supposed thousands of moneyed people who will buy or rent the condos and other new apts plopped into where cheap culture once flourished? Call it a pollyanna hunch, but when these luxury homes fail to net their owners the pennies-on-the-dollar profits they'd expected when they invested, they will either be left to rot, and thus reclaimed by squatters, or at very least be discounted heavily. Esce The Stone: Issue 3 - Live The Stone January 10th, 2008 (Tzadik 0004 LTDED; USA), terzo volume della serie Tzadik interamente a sostegno del locale newyorkese The Stone, con la registrazione dei due incontri di improvvisazione lì tenutisi tra John Zorn, Lou Reed e Laurie Anderson lo scorso 10 gennaio. The third issue Benefit for The Stone presents the recordings from the 2 sets of the Reed/Anderson/Zorn improv trio at The Stone in early 2008! It seems hard to believe that these three icons of the NYC art/world would end up collaborating, as well as becoming friends over the past few years. It was a big surprise for many of us at attendance last year for Old Knitting Factory Celebration & Stone benefit at Town Hall organized by Michael Dorf, to see Lou Reed collaborating with John Zorn on stage. It was actually a trio with cellist Jane Scarpantoni that night and you know what - it worked! Laurie Anderson, Lou's life-partner for quite a while now, also performed an inspired set that night as well. In February of this year (2008), Zorn premiered a new piece called "Shir Ha-Shirim" scored for two narrators and five female voices at the Abrons Center. The two narrators were Lou Reed and Laurie Anderson and the piece was most impressive. On January 10th of this year, Zorn put together a Stone benefit show that featured Lou Reed & John Zorn plus Laurie was added as well. The show of course, sold out in advance and was truly something to behold. I caught only the second set but was impressed by the way it unfolded and worked as a collaboration. Lou Reed has been a pioneer of noise/rock guitar since his days in the Velvet Underground, some 40 years ago. His classic solo effort, 'Metal Machine Music,' an often misunderstood masterwork, was recently resurrected and performed by a New Music ensemble in Germany with Lou playing some of the guitar parts. For the Stone gig, it was wonderful to see and hear Lou Reed dig deep into his electric guitar manipulations and unique sounds and show that he is still a master. Each set began with Lou playing solo, then Zorn coming in later and finally Laurie entering on electric violin. The pieces evolved organically all the musicians showed that they are gifted improvisers and played supremely well together. It was quite a special night that only 150 folks could witness due to the small size of The Stone. This disc does capture that great night quite well, so dig deep, my friends and support one of the last great experimental performance places in NYC - The Stone! - BLG

Not since the gothic horror of H P Lovecraft in his 'Music of Erich Zahn' has the art of music offered such an evening of candlelit weirdness and intrigue. The combination of tenor violin, half stopped organ, Stroh violin, bass violin, and bowed saw will set the spine erect and tingling. The setting? None other than London's home of spook - St. Pancras Old Church. Equipped with the notable stiffs of Johann Christian Bach, Mary Shelley, and Thomas Hardy to name but a few, the graveyard offers little comfort for those who would entertain an evening on the hard pew contemplating mortality and the ancient and modern of music. Bob Drake è intervenuto a dar man forte ai compagni e colleghi di Thinking Plague per il loro concerto a Le Lilas lo scorso 29 marzo. Si è presentato a sorpresa - quasi in incognito, se non fosse nota la sua passione per cani e lupi - per eseguire due classici del periodo di In This Life. Ricorre tra pochi giorni il decimo anniversario della scomparsa di Tom Cora, musicista americano – ma di lontane origini italiane – noto e carissimo agli appassionati delle musiche innovatrici. Il timbro inconfondibile del suo violoncello, tagliente e lirico insieme, ha segnato alcune delle più belle pagine di musica degli anni ottanta e novanta: Curlew, Duck & Cover, Nimal, Third Person, Angel Carver, Roof, le memorabili avventure solistiche e quelle in combutta con The Ex, e prima ancora quelle con Zorn, Moss e Chadbourne. Per non dire del sodalizio con Frith sotto sigla Skeleton Crew, che nei primi anni ottanta ha rappresentato una delle più compiute esperienze creative al confine tra rock eterodosso, improvvisazione e impegno sociale.

Cora venne spesso in Italia e qui tenne numerosi concerti (un suo tour in duo con Hans Reichel, parallelamente a quello di 5uu's, diede ufficialmente il via nel ’95 alle attività del Circ.a). Tra le iniziative ora in suo ricordo, gli ascolti guidati e la diffusione di materiali biografici e informativi promossi dal Centro Stabile di Cultura a San Vito di Leguzzano, Vi. Sul suo bisogno di tornare prima o poi a una formazione dedicata alla canzone e dai connotati rock così si esprimeva qualche tempo fa Fred Frith: "Over the years I’ve done a lot of improvising, and composed a lot of music on paper. I’ve written for orchestras and string quartets, directed ensembles of improvisers of all descriptions, produced scores for dance and film. I even somehow became a Professor of Composition! But I really miss what you can do with a rock band. I miss developing material through the push and pull of cooperative rehearsals, I miss what happens when you move away from “the parts” and start formulating things with a collective ear, I miss the single-minded commitment to a group identity." E a quel bisogno sembra poter dare oggi risposta Cosa Brava, il gruppo recentemente allestito con Zeena Parkins, Carla Kihlstedt e Matthias Bossi. Il quartetto - ne è contitolare però anche un quinto elemento, The Norman Conquest, al controllo e alla manipolazione dei suoni - ha debuttato ad Oakland qualche giorno fa, con un lungo concerto diviso tra tensioni rock e improvvisazione controllata, canzoni elettriche e passaggi lirici di sapore nostalgico (l'inevitabile Lost and Found in chiusura), dediche e allusioni ad Albert Marcoeur e a Tom Ze. Il loro tour europeo è iniziato ieri a Strasburgo - ne scrive uno spettatore non propriamente entusiasta in http://tinyurl.com/69d69l - e farà tappa a Venezia (Teatro Fondamenta Nuove, ore 21.00) il prossimo 9 aprile. Frith tornerà in Italia a maggio e più lungamente a giugno, anche con Zeena, per numerosi altri appuntamenti.
