Lol Coxhill fu tra quanti presero parte alle spettacolari e provocatorie iniziative del Welfare State, gruppo teatrale itinerante e d'assalto - forte di attori commedianti e musicanti, acrobati e pagliacci, mangiatori di fuoco e saltimbanchi - attivo nella Londra degli anni Settanta (e per molti anni a seguire) nelle strade, nelle piazze, sopra e sotto i ponti, sui tetti dei palazzi e in mille altri luoghi non canonici. Per un periodo a scrivere le musiche atte ad animare le varie azioni sceniche fu anche Mike Westbrook, mentre a idearne e dirigerne lo svolgimento fu, assieme alla compagna Sue Gill, l'incontenibile John Fox, mancato in questi giorni all'età di ottantasette anni. Lo ricorda proprio Mike, con ammirazione: "Showman, visionary and inspirational theatre director, John described his company The Welfare State as “engineers of the imagination”. He believed in the transformative power of Art; that Art should be part of the daily life of the community, the artist as essential as the butcher, the baker, the barber, the candlestick maker. He wanted to liberate the Arts from the Opera House, the Theatre, the Gallery and the Concert Hall, and take Art into the open air, to wherever people gather."

Oggi al settimo piano della Elmer Holmes Bobst Library, la principale biblioteca in Lower Manhattan a New York.
LOL: Celebrating the Life and Music of Lol Coxhill. "The thing about modern jazz is that everyone wants to play loud, squeaky and bonky," he once told Rat Scabies. "But I'm louder, squeakier and bonkier than any of them." He played with Denzil Bailey's Afro-Cubists, Joe Harriott, Tubby Hayes, Martha and the Vandellas, Kevin Ayers, Robert Wyatt, Bob Cobbing, AMM, Tommy Cooper, Shirley Collins, Lindsay Cooper, Rico Rodriguez, Penny Rimbaud. He was - with Tony Coe and Steve Beresford - in the magical Melody Four. He played under Hungerford Bridge and is said to have inspired Joni Mitchell's Real Good for Free. John Peel signed him to his Dandelion label. He acted in Sally Potter's Orlando and Derek Jarman's Caravaggio. He was, before his death just short of 80 in 2012, one of England's most singular saxophonists - ludic, free, improvising, always and in his fashion true. This afternoon will feature a trio of rarely-seen films about and featuring Coxhill (the ones by Helen Petts and Sally Potter will be prefaced by freshly-recorded video introductions from the directors.) There will also be a special introduction by his long-time friend and collaborator, the brilliant David Toop.

E soprattutto la speranza più che concreta di un nuovo appuntamento tra non molto con la Band of Bands, dopo quello di poche settimane fa a Lyme Regis. Auguri, Maestro!

"The title came after the tune on this one. It ended up as a dedication to Robert Wyatt and Alfreda Benge, inspired as it was somewhat by their vibe. Robert liking the tune was a clincher and begat the title. The idea of the piece was not very conscious and it wrote itself really and felt extremely calm doing so."

Sally Potter has been exploring themes of human connectedness, morality, and mortality in a career that has spanned four decades, encompassing works as varied as the speculative historical epic Orlando and the acerbically witty comedy-drama The Party. In addition to her film work, Sally is a musician and singer-songwriter, a parallel vocation that began with improvised performances and concerts in the 1970s and 1980s and continued through composing music for the soundtracks of many of her critically lauded films. Dai fantastici archivi Cuneiform usciranno a breve due concerti inediti dei Curlew nella loro formazione più classica - e quella forse più amata - a testimonianza delle tappe a San Francisco e Stoccolma del Knitting Factory Tour dell'aprile-maggio 1990: East/West/Also, con George Cartwright, Davey Williams, Tom Cora, Ann Rupel e Pippin Barnett.
Il debutto di Rüdiger Carl nei panni del Santo Bevitore si tenne all'Akademie der Künste di Berlino il 12 gennaio 1972 assieme a due compagni di pari forza, Günter Christmann e Detlef Schönenberg: documentò allora l'evento sobriamente (si fa per dire) la Fmp, senza indulgere in troppe reiterazioni o concomitanti cerimonie. Che però emersero qualche anno fa, per iniziativa di Corbett vs. Dempsey, e vengono oggi riprese nel quadro del rilancio in digitale della benamata etichetta: King Alcohol-Alternate Takes.

Quella di Evan Parker echeggiante nelle cave dei marmi di Carrara è una tra le voci certamente più riconoscibili tra le molte scelte da Daniel Blumberg per le musiche del film The Brutalist, premiato ieri con l'Oscar per la miglior colonna sonora originale. Ma ci sono anche quelle di John Tilbury - protagonista assoluto del geniale intervallo - Sophie Agnel, Axel Dörner, Robin Hayward, Steve Noble, Tom Wheatley, Seymour Wright e vari altri nomi della scena dell'improvvisazione radicale, omaggiati direttamente da Blumberg al momento della premiazione ufficiale e della conferenza stampa. Con un grazie speciale al Cafe Oto, da dove così replica: "Huge congratulations to our friend Daniel Blumberg and all the amazing musicians he worked with for winning an Oscar for best original score. The challenge posed by a deep and holistic artist like Bob Ostertag is how to take the first step towards getting into and understanding what he does. Fair descriptive titles for him include composer, instrument builder, and journalist - but listing them gives the illusion that they are separate activities, either alternating or running in parallel, when Ostertag is simultaneously all of these things and more.
