Li organizzò allora Riccardo Bergerone, e con lui ha lavorato Matt Parker per pubblicarli entrambi per la sua encomiabile British Progressive Jazz. Con Dean c'erano Keith Tippett, Harry Miller e Louis Moholo. Super!
I più lo conoscono per aver animato per anni in ambito quasi-scientifico discussioni e confronti su miti, leggende, prove autentiche e pseudologia fantastica sull'esistenza e l'avvistamento dell'abominevole Bigfoot nelle foreste di Washington, Oregon e California settentrionale; altri per la sua solida carriera da informatico e per gli studi sui salmoni; altri ancora la sua passione per toponimi storici e lasciti culturali di varie tribù di nativi americani (ne era erede di ben quattro). In ambito musicale è stato batterista brevemente al fianco di Elliott Sharp (in Boodlers) e in Tone Dogs (con Amy Denio e Fred Chanelor), più a lungo in Caveman Shoestore (sempre con Chanelor ed Elaine di Falco), divenuti poi Caveman Hughscore a metà anni Novanta con l'ingresso di Hugh Hopper in formazione. Avrebbe forse dovuto produrre un album assieme a Phil Miller, ma il tempo ha voluto diversamente, per entrambi: ciao Henry Franzoni!

Chi la ricorda tra le compositrici che a suo tempo concorsero alla realizzazione di uno dei progetti più belli e impegnativi di Kate Westbrook, Cuff Clout - tra queste anche Lindsay Cooper, Jenni Roditi, Eleanor Alberga e Barbara Thompson - avrà forse piacere di apprendere che la pianista Errollyn Wallen è appena stata insignita da Carlo III, re del Regno Unito di Gran Bretagna e Irlanda del Nord, della nomina di Master of the King's Music, seconda donna in assoluto in questa carica: "I am thrilled to accept this royal appointment. It will be a privilege and a great honour to serve His Majesty The King, the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. I look forward to championing music and music-making for all."

Pochi furono coloro che all'epoca rimasero insensibili all'ascolto di quello splendido brano di flamenco eterodosso posto in chiusura della prima facciata del doppio Recommended Records Sampler (1982), autentico manuale di sopravvivenza zeppo di storie, consigli, promesse e rivelazioni. Per converso molti furono quelli che da lì, incuriositissimi, presero a dar la caccia a notizie del suo autore - il chitarrista catalano Feliu Gasull, si scoprì - e di sue altre, presumibilmente altrettanto nobili, gesta. A distanza di anni, anzi decenni, provvede oggi come allora Chris Cutler producendo per ReR un prezioso box che unisce a tre cd, uno dei quali totalmente inedito, un ricco dossier sul rock innovativo nella Spagna di metà anni Settanta e i suoi protagonisti, con i luminosi esempi di Musica Urbana, Trio Altisent e appunto Gasull in duo con Joan Albert Amargos: Historia.

Dei sei concerti qui considerati, quattro vennero coordinati in Italia dal Circ.a, alla vigilia della cessazione delle sue attività collettive: si tennero a Bologna, Forlì, Schio e Abano Terme. Anche a Bruinsma, nelle vesti di compositore e di polistrumentista, ha spesso dato spazio Concertzender, tenendo informato l'ascoltatore sulle vicende di suoi progetti e gruppi dalle sorti alterne come Brown vs Brown e PumpOrgan. Termina oggi la bella serie quindicinale Contemporary Music Nights dedicata a Frank Crijns che Kees van de Wiel ha meticolosamente prodotto per Concertzender. Sono quattro episodi ora conservati sul web dall'emittente olandese - contrassegnati dal numero 152 al 155 - che ben rappresentano la fitta discografia del chitarrista e le sue molteplici esperienze come esecutore, compositore e improvvisatore.
On May 26 2024 the Dutch composer and guitar player Frank Crijns died at the age of 63. In his life Frank played in ensembles like Blast and Betonfraktion. But he also composed a lot of music for these bands, himself and for many different musicians and ensembles. In four nights you hear all his work both as composer and musician in chronological order from 1991 till now.

Keith Moliné pubblica un lungo e affettuoso ritratto di Graham Dowdall - che i più hanno conosciuto con il suo nome d'arte, Gagarin, in anni relativamente recenti con Pere Ubu, o precedentemente con Nico, o per una fitta produzione musicale a proprio titolo - scomparso all'età di settant'anni qualche settimana fa, descrivendone le doti e l'impegno non solo in campo musicale: "Dids’s energy, openness and enthusiasm made him friends wherever he played, allowing him to create a network of collaborators all over Britain and beyond. Of particular note are his projects with Mark Beazley and Johny Brown in Band Of Holy Joy. But I think it’s fair to say that for Dids, as fulfilling as all this music-making was - and I haven’t even got to what he did with Pere Ubu, which was also a source of great pride to him - the most important work he did was with neuro-diverse people, many with extreme challenges, tapping into and unlocking their creativity through facilitating musical expression. Dids was full of stories about how profound his experiences with these people were, his sense of wonder at how boundless their ability to interact and create could be when given the context to do so. Again, his colleagues in this field have told us how inspirational Dids was and how acutely his loss will be felt."

Barbara Hannigan is one of the most fearless and passionate performers in the classical world, and here she sings a challenging program of Zorn compositions with the virtuoso pianist Stephen Gosling. Featured here is the long-awaited recording of Jumalattaret, a song cycle in praise of nine Finnish Goddesses out of Sami Shamanism, and Split the Lark, Zorn’s tribute to the magical American poet Emily Dickinson. Using a variety of musical techniques and genres, the music moves from lyrical folk-like simplicity to more complex atonal and textural pyrotechnics. Included as a bonus is a rare piece of juvenilia: the charming surrealistic song Nazdar, Poupon, Nazdar. Composed circa 1971, when Zorn was about 17 years old, it is a very early example of Zorn’s multi layered genre smashing. In its brief twominute duration it contains traditional, proportional and graphic notation, and touches upon tonality, atonality, Messiaen birdsong, jazz, cartoon music, lyricism, French recitativo, whispering, vocalise, and vocal noises.

Non c'entra con l'invito alla (ovviamente misteriosa) cantante e violinista a far parte ufficialmente del quartetto dopo l'addio a Nolan Cook, né con l'atteso nuovo megaprogetto Doctor Dark, però un po' di attesa la genera comunque da qui ai primi di novembre: è Dookietown, gadget discografico dei Residents voluto inequivocabilmente per quando gli elettori americani sceglieranno il prossimo presidente degli Stati Uniti.
In acknowledgement of the 2024 US election and the increasingly pressing question "Where do clowns go when the show is over?" The Residents present a brand new six track EP. Produced in secret during a pause in recording their next magnum opus album, the Dookietown concept originates way back in the 1990s. The group were recently reminded of the project, and quickly revisited and recorded those songs as best they could remember them. Rush released for November 1st at The Residents' instruction, and complete with lyrics and introductory notes from Homer Flynn of The Cryptic Corporation.

The bulk of these songs were written and recorded after Sept. 11 2001. The Plutarch quote - "A fool cannot hold his tongue" - which they use on the cover acts on several levels. To write a straightforward song about that day would be foolish to say the least (though several egomaniac popular singers are doubtlessly doing so right now). The Residents have not done this. Neither are the songs on DDA discipherable metaphors for loss of life on that day. Despite artistic acclaim from those who understand and appreciate their art The Residents have held their tongues throughout their career. They also use a quote from Robert Graves, the First World War veteran and poet. Many artists who witnessed the horror of that conflict found themselves unable to talk about it using the usual methods. Indeed our very language (or tongue?) was deemed inadequate to describe such mechanised slaughter.

Perfetta da (ri)sfoggiare a ferragosto la collana di celebri brani disneyani interpretati e fatti propri da Sun Ra con la sua Arkestra, tratti da varie registrazioni dal vivo effettuate a cavallo tra gli anni Ottanta e Novanta e raccolti in occasione del Record Store Day lo scorso aprile. Tra le perle più in evidenza quella prestata a suo tempo ad Hal Willner per Stay Awake: Pink Elephants On Parade.
Sun Ra loved the joyous music from Walt Disney's animated films. He did so without irony. He performed these songs with his legendary Arkestra over many years, in many venues, and each performance was unique. At one 1989 concert in SF, he actually called his band "Sun Ra and his Disney Odyssey Adventure Arkestra." This album presents a small sample of Sun Ra exploring the Disneysphere. All tracks but one were recorded at concerts and club dates. With the exception of Marching Pink Elephants, recorded at Variety Studios for producer Hal Willner's 1988 Disney tribute album Stay Awake, Ra never recorded studio versions of Disney repertoire. The songs are from such classics as Peter Pan, Babes in Toyland, Sleeping Beauty, Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs, Dumbo, Mary Poppins, and Song of the South. There are countless ad hoc recordings of Ra performing Disney tunes, but the audio quality is often dodgy, since these were recorded by fans. Buon successo anche per la prima tiratura in vinile - di cui si sta occupando la fiorentina Quindi Records - di un nuovo capitolo a nome Testbild! a lungo rinviato, sei brani inediti risalenti a qualche anno fa e ora proposti con il fascino e il garbo tipici delle creazioni 'pop (ma non pop)' di Petter Herbertsson: Bed Stilt.
Non inarrestabile come quello con Sia, ma è comunque un successo (artistico) il sodalizio di Christopher Braide con Andy Partridge: sei brani finora, tutti in Queen Of The Planet Wow.
E torna a farsi vivo anche Stuart Moxham, invitando curiosi e ammiratori a ripercorrere con lui alcune tappe di un accidentato itinerario musicale e personale, spesso solitario e non di rado interrotto nel corso degli anni. C'è qualcosa dell'epoca di Young Marble Giants e The Gist, naturalmente. E c'è un aiutino da parte dell'amico di sempre, Louis Philippe: Fabstract, disponibile per chi vuole in un'edizione speciale con libretto illustrato, testi esplicativi e una collezione di brani extra, Kit Hill.
Torna a cantare il Re del Lussemburgo. Con inquietudine, acuita come per molti dal Covid. Con il ricordo di Derek Jarman. E con le parole di Harold Pinter, a un certo punto: "There's no escape. Piccolo compendio di eccezioni, casi isolati e contrattempi del passato, guardandosi alle spalle fin quasi a trent'anni fa: Fred Frith, A Miscellany of Mishaps. Di tutto un po'.
Ultimi in ordine di tempo nella già lunga serie di strumenti eolici inventati nel corso dei decenni dall'impareggiabile Jon Rose per interagire musicalmente con i movimenti dell'aria e la direzione dei venti, il Monolith (2021) e il Tube (2022) sono i protagonisti di Aeolian Tendency, album pubblicato or ora dall'australiana Room40, con risultati insieme incantevoli e inquietanti: "The haunting evocation of wind touches us like nothing else, even those with little thought for the nature of music. The power of the aeolian challenges our conviction of human exceptionalism, we become part of the physical realm... the elemental."

"Around 1889 Hawaiian musician Joseph Kekuku discovered a new way to play the guitar with a metal bar. He had invented the Lap Steel Guitar.
