Viene trasmesso questa sera in streaming dal vivo dall'Exploratorium Berlin il concerto del trio Colophony formato da Jon Rose, Richard Barrett e Meinrad Kneer, preceduto da una lezione dimostrativa di Rose e Barrett in conversazione con Mathias Maschat. L'inizio è alle ore 20.00.

Kolophonium wird aus dem Harz von Nadelbäumen gewonnen. Es wird auf den Bogen von Streichinstrumenten aufgetragen, um die Reibung zwischen Bogen und Saiten zu erhöhen. Kolophonium wird auch bei der Herstellung von Lippenstiften und Nagellack verwendet, dieses Trio ist jedoch für keine dieser letzteren Anwendungen bekannt.

Colophony ist ein konsequent improvisierendes Trio bestehend aus Jon Rose, Richard Barrett und Meinrad Kneer. Als Trio spielten sie erstmals Anfang Juni 2012 in Berlin. Sie beschlossen sofort, in dieser Trio-Besetzung weiter zusammenzuarbeiten. Die hohe Energie und Intensität ihres Zusammenspiels und die spontane Verflechtung von Streichern und Elektronik verleihen ihnen eine einzigartige Stimme und einen besonderen Platz innerhalb des Genres der frei improvisierten Musik. Ihre ausgeprägte Sensibilität für Klangfarbe und Form, die alle drei Interpreten in die Musik einbringen, erzeugt eine Musik, die das mikroskopische Leben innerhalb einer Textur akribisch erforschen oder fast augenblicklich zwischen feinen Nuancen und groben Kollisionen von Klängen hin und her wechseln kann.

Der Sound der Gruppe wird durch verstärkte Streicher und durch Richard Barretts manipulierte Samples von Streichinstrumenten bestimmt. Er und Jon Rose lernten sich in den 1990er-Jahren beim STEIM in Amsterdam kennen, wo sie beide an interaktiver Software arbeiteten, die sie in ihre Konzerte integrieren wollten. Rose hatte zu diesem Zeitpunkt einen interaktiven Geigenbogen entwickelt und Barrett kombinierte seine Interessen als New Complexity-Komponist mit der Rolle eines Improvisators. Beide verwendeten eine kürzlich entwickelte STEIM-Software namens LISA.

Vor dem Konzert werden Barrett und Rose zwei kurze Vorträge über ihre Praktiken halten, die sich hauptsächlich mit den Grundlagen der Entwicklung einer persönlichen Sprache und dem Bau spezifischer virtueller und akustischer Instrumente befassen, um diesen Prozess aufzunehmen und zu erleichtern.

On Tuesday, March 28 at 7 pm, Arts for Art proudly presents the world premiere of Life, Struggle, Music, a documentary featuring legendary French bassist Joëlle Léandre in never-before-seen solo performance, and in conversation with RogueArt label founder Michel Dorbon. Shot by Christian Pouget in the south of France, Ms. Léandre speaks with Dorbon about her exposure to FreeJazz in the 1970’s and the freedom it represented at a time when she was immersed in traditional and modern classical music. Léandre discusses her attraction to the energy and absence of hierarchy in the FreeJazz movement, and what it meant to be a woman in the music industry when she came up, and what it means in a music industry still controlled by men today.

The film shares insights into the music and heart of this great musician. It is a fundraiser in support of Arts for Art’s 2023 Vision Festival Lifetime of Achievement recognition of Ms. Léandre. The night of performances will take place at Roulette Intermedium, Brooklyn, NY on June 13. This Award is presented annually to artists who have attained preeminent status in the world of FreeJazz. Starting with the 10th Vision Festival in 2005, Arts for Art has awarded twenty artists over the past seventeen years. This year’s festival will take place June 13 to 18, 2023.

Di Neil Ardley in campo musicale si ricordano anche Harmony of the Spheres e Kaleidoscope of Rainbows - cui collaborarono a vario titolo Ian Carr e i Nucleus, Tony Coe, Paul Buckmaster, Barbara Thompson, Norma Winstone e Trevor Tomkins tra gli altri - e una versione di quest'ultima è allegata al volume assieme a due cd audio con inediti e rarità. Viv Ardley’s book on her husband Neil’s life will be published by Jazz In Britain in March. Titled Neil Ardley: Kaleidoscopes and Rainbows, the book includes contributions from Dave Gelly, Neil’s musical colleague in the New Jazz Orchestra, and John Coles who knew Neil well and has written about his electronic studio. The book covers all aspects of Neil’s various careers, including his 'other' life as an author of over 100 books on science, nature and technology. The hardback book is lavishly presented in full colour and illustrated with many previously unseen photographs and ephemera from Neil’s personal collection and other contributors’ archives. Viv spoke to a number of people who knew Neil well when she was researching the book, and you can be assured it’s all based on first-hand experiences.

Dal suo esordio nel 2016 a oggi la piccola etichetta londinese My Only Desire Records, che ha tra i suoi interessi il jazz britannico più creativo ed eclettico nel periodo tra gli anni Sessanta e Ottanta, ha recuperato in pubblicazioni di altissima qualità sonora alcuni materiali rari o inediti di Harry Beckett, Dave Gold, Mike Westbrook e Graham Collier. Di quest'ultimo propone ora Down Another Road @ Stockholm Jazz Days ’69, versione pressoché integrale dell'album Down Another Road registrata per la radio svedese nell'ambito dello Stockholms Jazzdagar 1969. In sestetto con il bassista e compositore c'erano Harry Beckett, Nick Evans, Stan Sulzmann, Karl Jenkins e John Marshall.

Since its release in 1969 on Fontana, Down Another Road has become a cornerstone of British jazz, considered the revered composer Collier's greatest album by many of its fans, thanks to its highly melodic, almost pop-like themes and irresistible '60s groove, spurred on by the on-point drumming of Soft Machine/Nucleus drummer John Marshall. To make Down Another Road @ Stockholm Jazz Days '69 even more special, the abstract track Danish Blue has been replaced by the similarly epic free jazz composition Burblings for Bob, which is released here for the first time. All the other tracks that everyone loves are present and correct but with a rawer live feel to them, longer arrangements and more soloing, with the band in scintillating form.

Tra le cose che più rendevano appetibile 1971-1974, il box antologico per il cinquantenario dei Faust pubblicato un paio d'anni fa in quantità estremamente limitata (e andato infatti subito esaurito), c'erano due collezioni di materiali inediti tratti dalle storiche registrazioni effettuate a Wümme più o meno alla maniera dell'amato The Faust Tapes. Cinque brani di varia provenienza e di qualità sonora precaria, ma di indubbia importanza nella storia del gruppo: "These five missing pieces, recently unearthed, include the early appearance at Glastonbury Festival, until now believed lost; a record of the short and undocumented French and Spanish tour with singer Phil Minton, and some previously unreleased compositions taken from a late concert in Spain. Although best efforts have been applied, these are recovered documents and the sound is not hi-fi quality. But for anyone interested in the history of group these are important pieces of the puzzle".

Si rinnova domani a Birmingham l'appuntamento annuale con il Phil Miller Guitar Prize, nel corso del quale vengono presentati brani del Nostro studiati e interpretati dagli allievi del Royal Birmingham Conservatoire sotto la guida esperta di Fred Thelonius Baker. Con un premio per i più bravi e i più creativi.

"Royal Birmingham Conservatoire Jazz Department is tonight celebrating the legacy of jazz composer and guitarist Phil Miller. Long associated with the Conservatoire, Phil is remembered for the concerts and workshops he gave in the old Conservatoire building in the days before our magnificent new premises were built. His career began as a teenager in the blues/jazz/rock era of the last century and his unique, guitar-centered compositions were added to the Conservatoire's Archives following his death in 2017, making him the third Jazz Composer in our collection. This year's Guitar Prize Competition is directed by our much-loved guitar and electric bass tutor Fred Thelonius Baker who played bass in Phil's band for 30 years. It will be an evening of Phil's music, opening with Fred's Trio with Mickey O'Brien on bass and Conservatoire alumnus Jim Bashford on drums, before handing over to the Competition entrants.

Intanto la versione 'ridotta' proposta ieri a Londra assieme al pianista Matthew Bourne e quattro abili operatori alle enormi campane si è conquistata la curiosità e la calorosa partecipazione del pubblico accorso nell'affascinante sede del Barbican Conservatory per una doppia iniziativa collettiva curata dalla piccola ma intraprendente etichetta Nonclassical sul tema dell'ecologia (anche sonora) e della salvaguardia del pianeta in epoca di emergenze climatiche: The Greenhouse Effect.

Dalle note del programma: "Among the array of new works will be the first performance of sculptor and musician Marcus Vergette’s Tintinnabulation, which uses the sound of bells he made by hand, accompanied by piano, double bass and bird calls. The work explores the idea of a world with birds and a world without them. Listen to the sounds of bells on wheels and smaller, handheld bells as you wander around the Conservatory and discover changing experiences to the sound as you move in relation to them. ‘Your movement alters the sound because bells create a complex resonance that changes according to your location as opposed to stringed instruments such as the piano and the bass,’ he says. ‘It’s like a rainbow - everyone can see it, but it’s different for each person.’ Vergette is particularly interested in the resonance of bells and the things that happen while they’re ringing. ‘Different frequencies appear to blossom out of the reverberation. And that’s what I want to play with,’ he says. ‘Bells create a very unusual type of soundwave. It’s like a giant vibrating jelly because the whole cone reverberates. When you play a string, it’s just a little sound through space and time. Whereas when you get caught inside a bell and the frequencies it creates, some are hardly audible, but you still feel them.’

It evolves from from partnership society to the advent of dominator culture, to what we hope will be a more balanced social and ecological future! The music and stories are all fabulous!"

God In 3 Persons Live (originally announced under the working title G3PTV) is an upcoming live concert video of The Residents' live theatrical adaptation of their 1988 album God In Three Persons, directed by John Sanborn. The video was announced and supported with an Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign on May 4th 2022. The video was filmed at a special performance of the show on May 15th 2022 at the Presidio Theatre Performing Arts Center in San Francisco, in front of a limited audience of crowdfund campaign contributors; the video is said by Sanborn to be the "definitive version" of the show. Editing on the video was completed as of October 28th 2022. In December the concert film was announced for release on DVD and Blu-ray on April 21st 2023. God In 3 Persons Live is also expected to be released to an unconfirmed streaming service in the near future.

Anche Meet the Residents, l'amato album di esordio dei Nostri (uscì ufficialmente nel 1974, come pesce d'aprile), vede in questi giorni una riedizione in vinile estesa e ampliata per la serie pREServed, offrendo un terzo LP di materiali completamente inediti anche rispetto alla precedente versione in cd della medesima serie, incluso un lungo, informativo (e semiserio) parlato del compianto Hardy Fox. A three LP reissue of Meet The Residents was announced November 5th 2022, as the first entry in a long-planned pREServed vinyl sub-series. The vinyl edition features both the pREServed remasters of both the mono and stereo mixes of the album, and a selection of outtakes on a third disc, including six previously unheard outtakes which were not included on the CD edition. Notable among the previously unheard material is "The Ralph Records Guided Tour", an audio tour of the Ralph Records headquarters by Hardy Fox, which was only recently re-discovered in The Cryptic Corporation archive. Early copies purchased direct from the Cherry Red website include a bonus, single-sided white label 7" containing the Meet The Residents Sampler (previously issued only once, on a flexidisc included with File Magazine in 1974).
