On 11 Feb 2022, the influential and highly respected Pere Ubu will be presenting an exclusive evening of wall-to-wall music and poems with their own version of ‘Canterbury Tales.’ Their visionary front man, David Thomas, says, “Canterbury to California, Chaucer to Kerouac. The Road beckons.” He adds the advice, “Hang a left.” Bob Holman, founder and world renowned owner of the Bowery Poetry Club in NYC, will be introducing the evening and participating sporadically throughout. David Thomas will be wearing both caps – both as lead singer of Pere Ubu and as lead singer of David Thomas and the two pale boys. The acclaimed Rats On Rafts will be flying in from The Netherlands to perform their exclusive live cover of Pere Ubu’s ‘Visions Of The Moon,’ followed by songs from their latest album.
Pere Ubu are David Thomas (vocals), Keith Moliné (guitar and bass), Gagarin (synth), Alex Ward (clarinet and guitar) and the inimitable Mr Chris Cutler on drums and percussion. Two pale boys will be David Thomas, Keith Moliné, Gagarin and Andy Diagram in a long anticipated return to their very unique songs and improvisations.

Ad aprire la scorsa settimana a New York il concerto inaugurale del Bang On A Can AllStars del 2022 - svoltosi sia in presenza che in streaming - è stata l'esecuzione di Which It Is, brano di Fred Frith scritto appositamente per la formazione e presentato qui per la prima volta: "Which It Is was composed during a residency in the village of Guarda in Unterengadines, Switzerland in the summer of 2021. It kind of wrote itself, maybe because of my absolute confidence that the AllStars can play this kind of stuff with aplomb. I've made quite a few pieces for choreographers over the years, and spent a lot of time back in 1978 exploring dance music while preparing the record Gravity. The chance to revisit the territory in this rather particular guise was both intriguing and exciting." Smyth, Pascal Marzan, Dave Tucker, Phil Minton e Dominic Lash, tra i più assidui partecipanti alle periodiche sessioni di Mopomoso. Altri omaggi al compianto chitarrista, in occasione del primo anniversario della sua scomparsa, vengono proposti in questi giorni a Tokyo in distinte occasioni da amici e collaboratori tra cui Yumiko Tanaka, Tetuzi Akiyama, Ken Ikeda e Sabu Toyozumi.

Uno dei più affettuosi saluti a John Russell, scomparso proprio in questi giorni un anno fa, lo diede Maggie Nicols, a lui vicina in molte vicende musicali e umane nel corso degli anni. Con emozione: La vie s'en va.

Skeleton Crew was founded in the early 1980s by Fred Frith and Tom Cora. The original idea was to create a new group out of the ashes of Massacre, but medical issues of several potential members saw Frith & Cora end up as a duo. They started experimenting with what they could achieve by themselves, recorded the fantastic debut album Learn to Talk and finally decided to take the new project out on the road. Dave Newhouse of The Muffins joined them for these live shows which proved very successful. Back in the studio, Frith and Cora recorded their second and last album, The Country of Blinds, and afterwards went on tour again. This time, they were joined by multi-instrumentalist Zeena Parkins who had already played on the recent album. Fred Frith remembers the days of touring as very low-key affairs with incredibly exciting results, saying the songs they played sounded very different every single night, such was the energy that was created by the band on stage. Everybody who has seen them perform will agree that Skeleton Crew on stage was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Con Guigou Chenevier in passato ha incrociato spesso la sua traiettoria Rick Brown, stringendo diretta alleanza con lui e Charles Hayward nel trio Les Batteries - nella versione a due si videro più volte anche in Italia per il Circ.a - e partecipando entrambi a numerose vicende delle musiche innovatrici tra gli anni Ottanta e Novanta. Dopo V-Effect, Fish & Roses, Run On, Timber e Curlew, in tempi recenti Brown ha ritrovato seguito e notorietà assieme al chitarrista Che Chen in 73 Dollar Bills, molto attivo dal vivo sulla scena newyorkese come duo polistrumentale, non di rado in formazione estesa e variabile, sempre aperto a numerose ed eterogenee influenze. Il loro ultimo album, per esempio, vede all'orizzonte Harry Partch e Pauline Oliveros, Bob Dylan e Yoko Ono, Allen Toussaint e Dolly Parton (con un tocco di MC5): (Other) People's Music.

Doppio sguardo alla storia recente e meno recente del Pianeta Gong: Live at Longlaville, un bell'inedito dell'ottobre 1974 con la formazione di You, e Pulsing Signals, una sintesi dei concerti del 2019 del quintetto di The Universe Also Collapses. Tra quanti esprimono auspici all'inizio dell'anno c'è anche Henry Kaiser, propenso a proseguire nel 2022 la sua serie di contributi periodici presso il canale YT della Cuneiform, con un'antica invocazione ripresa assieme a Josh Michaell: O Death.
Anche per questo inizio d'anno Bob Drake conferma gli appuntamenti a cadenza mensile - a volte quindicinale - con i propri ascoltatori, trasmettendo da casa in diretta streaming secondo una formula ormai consolidata che lascia spazio di tanto in tanto a qualche piccola (o grande) novità. E a causa del Covid salta di nuovo il giro di concerti di Dog Stab! che i Residents avevano in programma in mezza Europa nelle prossime settimane. Tutte rinviate di un anno le date previste: ai fan non resta che cercare di consolarsi con i documenti audio e video pubblicati da Grand Chess Records in seguito a una delle pochissime uscite del 2021, quella di inizio giugno per l'anniversario di Night Flight filmata da John Sanborn.
Originally conceived as a tour to support the new album Metal, Meat & Bone (the songs of Alvin Snow, aka Dyin' Dog), with a second set of Duck Stab material to fill out the evening, this show underwent a few changes when it was cancelled two (and a half) times due to the Covid-19 pandemic that hit in 2020. The North American tour was originally scheduled for April and May of that year, but was postponed for a full year, and then to August and September of 2021. Eventually all but the California dates were cancelled. A European tour scheduled for early 2022 has been postponed to 2023. During the downtime, The Residents went into a studio to record a performance of Duck Stab to be featured on Night Flight's 40th anniversary program. By the time the public California performances finally did happen, the show began to be billed as the 50th anniversary tour, with an encore performance of The Third Reich 'n' Roll.

La cara voce narrante di Viv Stanshall torna a farsi sentire nella favoletta sinfonica di Prokof'ev Pierino e il lupo adattata per ensemble più o meno rock da Jack Lancaster e Robin Lumley nel 1975, con la partecipazione di Manfred Mann, Chris Spedding, Brian Eno, Keith e Julie Tippett, Jon Hiseman, Bill Bruford e Alvin Lee tra gli altri. L'album è riproposto da Esoteric Recordings: Peter and the Wolf.
Altri racconti di Canterbury, spesso alternativi e paralleli a quelli ufficiali, li narra da sempre e in modi vari Mark Hewins, protagonista in prima persona di molte storiche vicende anche a fianco dei Grandi: per esempio Hugh Hopper, Pip Pyle, Elton Dean, Richard Sinclair e Lol Coxhill, tutti presenti nei tre volumi Canteresque Compilation che ha da poco pubblicato su Bandcamp.
Suona un po' italiano il primo assolo dell'anno di Eugene Chadbourne, eseguito con una dodici corde prodotta a Recanati: fa parte della serie quotidiana Head of Books, ininterrotta da ottobre a oggi - con una breve pausa tra un paio di giorni, in coincidenza con il compleanno del Nostro - e in programma fino al 2025.
