October 2021 will see the release of the first official book of Misha Mengelberg compositions, Mishakosmos: The Music of Misha Mengelberg. It will be a "real book": hardcover and professionally spiral-bound, featuring more than 75 pieces of Misha's music ready to play or otherwise engage with, designed for fans, teachers, students, and especially the performing musician. Curated and collated by Michael Moore, the list of compositions includes Blues After Piet, Peer's Counting Song, the Rollos, Gare Guillemins, Samba Zombie, Who's Bridge, and of course the perennial favourite De Sprong O Romantiek der Hazen, but also plenty more.

Proseguono a ritmo incalzante le iniziative dell'In Situ Art Society a Bonn (Germania) dopo le scorribande nei giorni scorsi di Elliott Sharp e in attesa dell'arrivo di Fred Frith con Lotte Anker. Oggi è il turno della King Übü Örchestrü, gruppo di improvvisazione orchestrale aperto a musicisti di varia nazionalità attivo fin dagli anni Ottanta e a lungo guidato dall'impegno di Wolfgang Fuchs (1949-2016). In formazione ci sono Marc Charig, Axel Dörner, Phillipp Wachsmann, Erhard Hirt e Paul Lytton tra gli altri, e con loro stasera c'è anche Phil Minton. Il concerto si tiene negli spazi artistici e culturali della Kreuzung an St. Helena e viene trasmesso in live streaming su YT a partire dalle ore 20.00.
E' tornato disponibile via Bandcamp in formato digitale - ma forse si trova ancora qualche copia del cd originale - uno dei suoi più indiscussi classici, Binging It All Back Home (Out of Depression, 1994), però oggi occhi e orecchi sono tutti per la nuova operina Inside the Head of Steven Saint, un'immersione (responsabile) nel lusso della Riviera francese anticipata qualche mese fa su YT: Bing Selfish.
Uno che ha saputo trarre insegnamenti e vantaggi perfino dalle restrizioni imposte dalla pandemia è Christophe Petchanatz, ovvero Klimperei, cimentandosi in numerose collaborazioni a distanza con amici e colleghi sul terreno della provocazione creativa e del gioco. Una delle sue ultime trovate è la serie Musical Games with Constraints, giunta ora al quinto capitolo con una sfida esclusivamente pianistica: From Satie to Schoenberg.

Ben più attuali, e tutte segnate dalle condizioni imposte dalla pandemia, sono le registrazioni casalinghe di Man Out Of Time prodotte da Dave Newhouse per Manna/Mirage. Tra i numerosi collaboratori vicini e lontani figurano Guy Segers, Carla Diratz, Bret Hart, Rich O'Meara e Fred Frith. Proprio a quest'ultimo è dedicato uno dei brani in scaletta, Fred's Dream: "This was composed just before the Pandemic isolation began. Fred Frith's great band was scheduled to appear at one of our beloved venues in Washington DC called Rhizome, and the night before I had a dream that I was at the concert. For some reason it was not at Rhizome but at a high school auditorium. We were seated in folding metal chairs looking up at the stage area with the curtains drawn closed. Suddenly, we heard a pop band start up behind us. I remember thinking to myself that that can't be Fred's group, it's too normal, too poppy. So we all turned around in our chairs and looked at the back of the auditorium, and sure enough it wa Fred's band set up and playing this wonderful pop tune! And then I woke up. And ran downstairs to the studio and recorded the chords, beat, and melody from that pop song that was still in my head. What you hear on this track is exactly what I dreamt. (Thank you, Muses!) I had Sean and Jerry add drums and bass to it and then I sent it on to Fred and told him the story. And somewhere in our back-and-forth correspondences, I asked him if he'd consider playing a solo on it (after all, it is "Fred's Dream"), and he said yes. Needless to say, I am over the moon to have him as a guest on this song. It just had to be."
Steve Feigenbaum - in epoca pre-Cuneiform - si fa sentire alla chitarra con Illegal Aliens nei nastri di The Round Window raccolti in cd da Dave Newhouse e prodotti dai Muffins in libertà assieme a vari amici tra il 1974 e il 1981 negli stessi luoghi dove vennero registrati Chronometers e Manna/Mirage.
Ed è pronto per Cuneiform Records l'album 10 10 10 contenente l'ultima registrazione effettuata insieme in studio - a Bristol, nell'ottobre 2010 - dai quattro magnifici di Mujician: Paul Dunmall, Tony Levin, Paul Rogers e Keith Tippett.
Ricorda il sassofonista: "In 2010 Mujician did a short tour to celebrate Tony Levin's 70th year. Whilst on tour, on 10th October, Mujician were recorded in the Victoria Room at the University of Bristol Music Studios by the great engineer Jonathan Scott. Little did we know this would be the last time we would record, as Tony Levin passed away a few months later. Mujician were together for 22 years, and in that time we played throughout Europe, Canada, Russia, South Africa and many concerts in the UK. In 2020 Keith Tippett died after a long illness. I believe that Mujician was one of the great groups in jazz history. It wasn't just a free jazz group; it covered so many areas that I think all we can say is it played outstanding music."
For over 20 years, Mujician set a gold standard for intuitive, highly spiritual, and near-clairvoyant communication within an improvising ensemble. Composed of four of the biggest names in the European jazz and improvised music community this “super group” was nonetheless a true cooperative, a collective critically praised for its sensitive interplay and coherent voice.

E' pronto per Discus Music il doppio cd che con due registrazioni del 2019 - in studio a Leeds e dal vivo a Londra - documenta i momenti conclusivi dell'intensa collaborazione durata tre anni tra il compianto Keith Tippett e Matthew Bourne: Aeolian.
Spanning a three-year period between 2017-2019, Keith Tippett and Matthew Bourne performed a series of two-piano concerts - nearly all of which were recorded. Discus Music is incredibly proud to make the fruits of this vital work available as a double album, comprising of two beautifully-recorded performances from 2019: a set of individual studio pieces recorded at Leeds Conservatoire is paired with a remarkable live performance from Daylight Music at Union Chapel, London, which sadly proved to be Keith's final public statement.

Alle numerose sorprese che anche ai più fini conoscitori - inclusi i musicisti stessi - riserva il box antologico The Charisma Years 1970-1978 dei Van Der Graaf Generator è utile accompagnare quanto spiega in un'istruttiva intervista Stephen W Tayler, esperto degli studi londinesi Trident dove all'epoca vennero registrati i più importanti album del gruppo, H To He, Who Am The Only One e Pawn Hearts soprattutto, e responsabile pressoché unico dei loro nuovi missaggi in stereo e surround. Con una rassicurazione verso chi ha maturato non poca diffidenza verso operazioni à la Wilson sempre più frequenti: "It has been the greatest pleasure and privilege to work on these albums, especially having been a fan at the time they were released. I have tried to respect the originals while making it worthwhile to have a fresh listening experience."

David Thomas ha voluto intervenire in prima persona anche per il nuovo missaggio dei due album dei Pere Ubu prodotti a cavallo del millennio, Pennsylvania (1998) e St. Arkansas (2002), ripubblicati in questi giorni da Fire Records in digitale, cd e vinile colorato. L'iniziativa è sottolineata da due podcast nella serie UbuDub e da un concerto in diretta streaming in programma oggi a partire dalle ore 20.00, cui partecipano anche Gagarin e Keith Moliné.

Guitarist, composer and MacArthur Fellow Mary Halvorson has been called “NYC’s least-predictable improviser” (Howard Mandel, City Arts), “the most forward-thinking guitarist working right now” (Lars Gotrich, NPR.org) and “one of today’s most formidable bandleaders” (Francis Davis, Village Voice). Ms. Halvorson is best known for her trio, quintet, and octet; the latter is featured on her 2016 album Away With You. Her latest project as a bandleader is a sextet called Code Girl, for which she wrote music and lyrics, with Amirtha Kidambi (voice), Maria Grand (saxophone and voice), Adam O’Farrill (trumpet), Michael Formanek (bass) & Tomas Fujiwara (drums). Collaborative projects include the longstanding collective ensemble Thumbscrew (also with Formanek and Fujiwara), and a chamber-jazz duo with violist Jessica Pavone. Ms. Halvorson has also performed in bands led by Anthony Braxton, Tim Berne, Taylor Ho Bynum, Trevor Dunn, Tomas Fujiwara, Ingrid Laubrock, Jason Moran, Joe Morris, Tom Rainey, Tomeka Reid, Marc Ribot, Ches Smith and John Zorn, among others.

Grande entusiasmo in casa Miller per il recente ritrovamento di nuove e migliori registrazioni relative ai concerti di In Cahoots dell'8 e 9 dicembre 2001 a Odaiba, Tokyo, presso il club Tribute to The Love Generation. Formazione classica, e tutti in splendida forma: Phil Miller, Elton Dean, Jim Dvorak, Peter Lemer, Fred Baker e Pip Pyle. Lo segnala la stessa Herm: "We are all very excited about this week’s posting: the newly discovered tapes of Tribute to the Love Generation in Tokyo 2001 where In Cahoots played two great concerts on the 8th and 9th of December. The band were in tip top form and the music was at its best with a brand new set list. Everyone played really well and to top it all it was brilliantly recorded by one of Phil’s greatest friends: the inspired sound engineer Benj LeFevre. L'album è uscito l'anno scorso per la piccola etichetta indipendente eux sæm di Metz (Francia), registrato poco lontano a Strasburgo a fine 2018. Ora lo promuove un concitato video con i quattro protagonisti - Anil Eraslan, Fred Frith, Tom Malmendier e Clara Weil - impegnati a mimare il brano d'apertura, Mais si, minimizzando qualsivoglia pretesa di pollice verde: There or Here and That.
A recuperare la preziosa registrazione che ne documentava la prima uscita dal vivo aveva già provveduto una dozzina d'anni fa il compianto Mike King per Reel Recordings, pubblicando in Split the Difference buona parte del concerto al celebre 100 Club di Londra il 22 maggio 1972: degli Splinters facevano parte Tubby Hayes, Kenny Wheeler, Trevor Watts, Stan Tracey, Jeff Clyne, John Stevens e Phil Seamen. Oggi quello stesso concerto viene riproposto da Jazz in Britain - in versione integrale - assieme a un altro concerto londinese, stavolta inedito, di pochi mesi successivo: Inclusivity, triplo cd in una ricca edizione con le fotografie di Jak Kilby e un saggio di Simon Spillett.
