Henry Kaiser dona un cd nuovo di zecca a conforto degli affezionati ascoltatori in quarantena e a sostegno degli indomiti eroi che si ostinano a diffondere nel mondo libero musiche di valore su disco, cd e supporto fisico, Wayside, Squidco e Downtown Music Gallery tra questi. Promuove la cosa con un video un po' allusivo e sornione su YT, mentre per i titoli cita due massime del celebre nonno: When Your Work Speaks For Itself, Don’t Interrupt (il brano) e Problems are Only Opportunities in Work Clothes (l'album).

Dopo la serie di ristampe di opere storiche (Onze danses pour combattre la migraine e Un peu de l'âme des bandits) e il disvelamento di un antico album all'epoca inspiegabilmente trascurato (Ex-Futur, presentato e reinterpretato invece con successo, sia in studio sia dal vivo) giunge finalmente alle stampe un lavoro completamente nuovo di Aksak Maboul, Figures. Ancora una volta singolare. Anzi, doppio.

The legendary experimental pop outfit returns with a brand-new record entitled Figures, written, conceived and produced over the last couple of years by Marc Hollander (founder of Aksak Maboul and of the Crammed label) and Véronique Vincent (former singer with The Honeymoon Killers). Figures is a double album containing 22 tracks and interludes, resulting from the flow of creative ideas which arose after a gap of over thirty years. Drawing again from the multiple sources which have always inspired the band (from electronic music and pop to experimentation, jazz, minimalism, contemporary classical etc), Aksak Maboul transcends and reconfigures them with its inimitable style, to create an impressive, rich and unclassifiable piece of work. Véronique Vincent and Marc Hollander wrote the album together, by following parallel courses with their own respective internal logic, while remaining closely connected. Enigmatic and finely chiseled, feeding on her love for painting and literature, Véronique’s texts form a dense fabric which mirrors the sonic kaleidoscope assembled by Marc, who wrote and arranged the music. Doveva coincidere con l'uscita del secondo album solista e anticipare di qualche giorno i festeggiamenti per il suo compleanno, ma l'attuale impossibilità di effettuare concerti al Cafe Oto londinese - come in migliaia di altri luoghi ovunque - hanno spinto Yumi Hara a rinviare il suo mini-festival all'anno prossimo. Stesso luogo, più o meno gli stessi giorni di giugno, programma pressoché inalterato: The Watts, Jump for Joy!, Canterbury Favourites, Lindsay Cooper Songbook, vari momenti in solo o in duo con Guy Harries e Atsuko Kamura, un intervento di Chlöe Herington, un paio di DJ set e altro ancora da confermare. Uno dei gesti più semplici, forse addirittura il primo, tra quelli utilizzati nelle conduzioni della London Improvisers' Orchestra fa da spunto al nuovo lavoro realizzato collettivamente a partire da note resistenti prodotte individualmente dai musicisti relegati in casa: Sustaining the Music.

This album takes its cue from the first conducting signal in the LIO's lexicon of signs, "hand out flat palm upward: play a sustained sound". With the musicians confined to their homes the idea was to create an orchestral sample library. Many LIO members supplied recordings of one minute of sustained sound which were then used to create the pieces presented here.

Anche il collettivo dell'Horse Improvised Music Club, domiciliato presso l'Iklectik londinese da oltre cinque anni, trasferisce in questo periodo le proprie attività sul web: questa sera, ad esempio, è in programma una serie di interventi in streaming su YT cui parteciperanno tra gli altri Viv Corringham, Adrian Northover, Daniel Thompson, Adam Bohman e Sue Lynch.

The Horse Improvised Music Club was established in March 2012, when it held a series of gigs at The Horse pub in Waterloo, London SE1. The club is organised by Adam Bohman, Sue Lynch and Hutch Demouilpied, who are all musicians on the London Improvised Music Scene.
The Horse Improvised Music Club ran twice monthly concerts at The Horse Pub and other venues local to Waterloo. In December 2014 the club relocated to Iklectik Art lab local to Waterloo. Since then we have had worked in partnership with Iklectik Art lab.
Since 2012 we have programmed over 200 performers both from the UK and abroad. The Club places a strong emphasis on programming established performers alongside new musicians. A broad style of improvising, including conventional instruments, sound art, performance, electronics and poetry are promoted and so within an evening we present a wide spectrum of musical improvising styles.

Con una buona dose di fiducia che le cose si rimettano un po' a posto Mike Westbrook conferma il concerto al Ronnie Scott's londinese per presentare con la Uncommon Orchestra la nuova versione del suo celebre lavoro su Duke Ellington, On Duke's Birthday. La data doveva essere quella dello scorso 29 aprile, ora si guarda invece al prossimo 28 ottobre. Ospiti dell'Orchestra in quell'occasione saranno Dominique Pifarely, Frank Schaefer e Chris Biscoe.

Intanto prosegue sul web la serie WestbrookJazz Moving Picture Show con uno splendido estratto da Propositions (Three Variations), con Dave Holdsworth, Roz Harding e Alan Wakeman in grande evidenza. Gli ammiratori di Allan Holdsworth hanno di che felicitarsi in questo periodo anche per la sospirata pubblicazione integrale della raccolta di inediti Tales From the Vault, sostenuta da un finanziamento collettivo iniziato nel 2016 e svelata finora solo in parte. Tra le molte rarità e curiosità spiccano alcune tracce prodotte segretamente con Mark Pinske negli studi di Zappa all'epoca del travagliato Road Games (1983) e un'antica versione di The Abingdon Chasp, uno dei più pregevoli momenti di One of a Kind (1979) del gruppo Bruford.

With the gracious blessing of the Holdsworth family, permission has been given for the sharing of Allan Holdsworth's 2016 Pledgemusic project, Tales From the Vault. Originally intended as crowdfunded project to finance the completion of several album tracks (recorded in the preceding years with various touring trios), various circumstances prevented much progress in any kind of timely manner. Eventually fearful of disappointing his supporters by making them continue to wait indefinitely, Allan decided to release Tales From the Vault, a collection of unreleased solo tracks, alternate mixes and demos, assembled with the aid of engineer Robert Feist.

Tra le sue passioni ci sono Beethoven, Stockhausen, HP Lovecraft, i personaggi della Marvel Comics, le moderne musiche da film e quelle dell'antica tradizione giapponese. Ed Chang è però noto anche per la sua conoscenza enciclopedica dell'opera di Allan Holdsworth (1946-2017), finora espressa in uno dei suoi blog più seguiti, A Thread of Lunacy, e ora in un poderoso volume dal titolo Devil Takes The Hindmost. La transizione dal web alla pagina scritta è stata suggerita dalla rampante Jazz in Britain, già responsabile pochi mesi fa dello studio di John Thurlow su Harry Beckett.

Scrive Chang nell'introduzione: "This book charts the musical journey - album by album - of ground-breaking jazz-rock guitarist Allan Holdsworth. Largely unknown to the general public, but revered internationally by fans and "stars" from the worlds of progressive rock and electric jazz, Holdsworth's work stands on a high summit, alongside the legacies of rock guitar luminaries such as Jimi Hendrix and Edward Van Halen. However, at this point in time, not a single published book has focused on Holdsworth's full career as a musical pioneer (although in recent years more and more university theses based on Allan's music have begun surfacing). This project aims to rectify that situation.
As an added reward, charting Allan's nearly 50-year career also provides an interesting vantage point from which to survey the development of some important strains of progressive rock, jazz and fusion music, not typically as well-known as the more popular hard-blues/heavy metal styles played on "classic rock" radio. However, the focus here will mainly be on how Allan Holdsworth developed his own unique sound world, starting from "off-kilter" '60s guitar-pop to an almost "modern symphonic" electric style in the 21st century- a style which will almost definitely remain vibrant and undated even going into the 22nd century."

E' rinviato all'anno prossimo Time's Arrow, l'atteso concerto di Dave Stewart e Barbara Gaskin in programma a inizio agosto al Kings Place di Londra. Un rinvio ormai inevitabile, data la perdurante incertezza legata al coronavirus, ma che ugualmente dispiace: "Due to circumstances beyond our control we've had to reschedule our concert at Kings Place, London to Saturday July 31st 2021 - at present the venue is closed with no fixed reopening date, so given the current uncertainty we felt it was sensible to delay the event till next year. We're very sorry for the inconvenience, but look forward to seeing you all at a time when some semblance of normal life has returned."

Così ricollocato, l'appuntamento andrà a far parte delle iniziative per festeggiare nel 2021 i quarant'anni di attività della Premiata Coppia. Dice Barbara: "Strange days... we hope you're keeping well at this difficult time. No-one knows quite what happens next, but hopefully good sense will prevail and things will eventually settle down - as the lyrics to our old song go, 'We've survived this before'. For some of us, it's an opportunity to catch up with rainy-day projects and think about what beneficial changes might arise from the current situation - we're fortunate to be able to continue making music (though we've temporarily had to stop rehearsing), and Dave has been archiving his collection of old tapes and unearthed some musical nuggets which will no doubt find their way into our next batch of songs."

E' pronto presso ReR nella versione in inglese lo 'storico' testo di metà anni Ottanta - poi rivisto e aggiornato nel 2000 - Henry Cow-An Analysis of Avant Garde Rock, di Trond Einar Garmo, inizialmente atteso per metà marzo e ora finalmente disponibile per richieste e ordinativi, servizi postali permettendo. Ne dava segnalazione qualche tempo fa anche Rythmes Croisés, annunciandolo assieme al nuovo, imminente libro di Chris Cutler All Change (che nel frattempo ha cambiato titolo in Not as we Choose).

Après l’ouvrage de Benjamin Piekut Henry Cow-The World is a Problem, un autre livre consacré au groupe phare des musiques nouvelles et avant-gardistes est sur le point d’être publié. Il s’agit cette fois d’une réédition d’un ouvrage conçu à l’origine comme une thèse rédigée par Trond Einar Garmo en 1984-85, soit quelque temps après la dissolution du groupe et intitulée Henry Cow-En analyse av avantgarderock (An Analysis of Avant Garde Rock). Cette thèse est devenue un ouvrage remis à jour et publié en 2000 par l’Université des sciences et des technologies norvégienne. Cette nouvelle édition, à nouveau remise à jour, est la première à contenir une traduction en anglais.
Conçu avec la collaboration du groupe, Henry Cow-An Analysis of Avant Garde Rock se concentre principalement sur la musique et contient des partitions originales, des textes de chansons et des analyses. L’histoire de Henry Cow y est également contée à travers des recherches, des analyses et des entretiens (dont certains inédits). Une bibliographie et une discographie (officielle et non officielle) de Henry Cow et des autres projets des membres du groupe complètent cet ouvrage de 274 pages qui s’adressent autant aux étudiants, aux musicologues qu’aux simples curieux.
