Il concerto del 26 agosto 2006 con Hatfield and the North a Feerwerd - poco distante da Groningen (Paesi Bassi), nell'ambito del festival rurale e itinerante (in bicicletta!) Jazz Fiets Tour Groningen - fu il suo ultimo, appena due giorni prima del precipitare degli eventi. La ripresa video, nel montaggio di Herman Tulp, è guardatissima su YT (trentaduemila volte in tre anni, segna il contatore). Tre nuove canzoni concepite per bambini piccolissimi, da far ascoltare loro prima e dopo la nascita: è un progetto del National Jazz Trio of Scotland ('not jazz, nor a trio and not entirely Scottish') in collaborazione con il distretto sanitario scozzese NHS Forth Valley dal titolo Songs for Someone New, dedicato nello specifico ai genitori in dolce attesa ma perfettamente in linea con l'estetica del loro repertorio più generale. E chissà che qualcuna di esse - Two Hearts, You Roller, Welcome Song, reperibili anche via Soundcloud - non faccia capolino nei concerti dal vivo che il quartetto si accinge a compiere in favore di un pubblico un pochino più cresciuto: da domani a Edimburgo, Glasgow, Aberdeen e Isola di Mull.

E a proposito di John Coltrane, la versione di Electric Ascension presentata dal Rova Saxophone Quartet nel gennaio 2012 al Guelph Jazz Fest (Canada) è racchiusa in una speciale pubblicazione di cui si è fatta carico qualche mese fa la parigina RogueArt - e di cui ora scarseggiano le copie - che comprende sotto il titolo collettivo Rova Channeling Coltrane un cd, un dvd e uno speciale Blu-ray con possibilità per l'utente di interagire con il missaggio audio. Non mancano documenti fotografici, note di presentazione e commento, interviste a numerosi protagonisti e ulteriori materiali video relativi alle complesse fasi preparatorie del progetto, a suo tempo oggetto anche di finanziamento pubblico da parte di appassionati e sostenitori. Con il Rova, promotore dell'iniziativa, sono Hamid Drake, Rob Mazurek, Fred Frith, Chris Brown, Nels Cline, Carla Kihlstedt, Ikue Mori e Jenny Scheinman.

Rova Channeling Coltrane - a special DVD/Blu-ray/CD package produced by the Paris jazz label Rogue Art - was released January 15, 2016 in the USA. It includes the Kickstarter-funded five-camera shoot of Electric Ascension, Rova's 21st century arrangement of John Coltrane's major late work, Ascension. This video shoot was beautifully edited and mixed in the San Francisco Bay Area by director John Rogers and sound engineer Jim McKee (with mixing help from Larry Ochs of Rova, and technical help from both Lucas Ranch and Pixar Studio! Yes: The sound and picture are both spectacular as a result.). The live concert is issued on both Blu-ray - with incredible 5.1 surround sound - and on DVD (in stereo sound format). Also on the DVD: Cleaning the Mirror by Bay Area documentarian John Rogers, telling the story of ROVA's adaptation of John Coltrane's Ascension for a 21st century ensemble - plus a brief history of Coltrane's original recording in 1965. Cleaning the Mirror also contains notable interviews with past Electric Ascension participants such as Cline, Andrew Cyrille, Eyvind Kang and Scheinman; and a specially recorded and mixed CD of the same 2012 performance is also included in the package. Da un concerto di Terry Riley a Colonia nel dicembre 1974 è tratto il doppio album Rainbow in Cologne, contenente due sue composizioni assai famose - A Rainbow In Curved Air e Persian Surgery Dervishes - in versione inedita. Registrazioni probabilmente opera della WDR tedesca.

Minimalist composer Terry Riley premiered his work In C in 1964, a big influence on minimalism in contemporary composition and on subsequent works by composers like Philip Glass, Steve Reich and John Adams. 1967’s A Rainbow In Curved Air and its companion piece Poppy Nogood And The Phantom Band – both mixing repetition, electronics and tape-manipulation – were often performed in marathon, trance-inducing performances, and Riley was regarded a cult musician in avantgarde rock music circles. This 2-CD set presents previously unheard versions of two compositions, performed by Terry Riley on organ in Cologne, West Germany, 1971.

Un affascinante approccio all'universo estetico e musicale di Morton Feldman è quello proposto dall'opera interattiva The Transmigration of Morton F., realizzata da Sjaron Minailo e Ruben van Leer fondendo musica, cinema, teatro, linguaggio dei videogiochi e funzionalità dei browser. Protagonista - anzi, avatar - tra i molti intercambiabili soggetti della narrazione è Joan La Barbara. Il lavoro è stato presentato a giugno all'Holland Festival, ed è disponibile sul web in http://mortonf.net.

In The Transmigration of Morton F. the worlds of opera, ritual and computer-gaming coalesce. Commissioned by the Holland Festival, director Sjaron Minailo and composer Anat Spiegel’s creation is a fully digital music theatre performance to be experienced from June 20 on www.mortonf.net. The legendary vocal artist Joan La Barbara performs the protagonist as herself: while visiting Amsterdam she finds herself caught up in a game of cat and mouse with a mysterious character whom she believes to be the reincarnation of iconic composer Morton Feldman with whom she has worked with in the past. As La Barbara’s surreal dreamworld unravels, the viewers are invited to travel the infinite paths of their own choosing through Spiegel’s and Feldman’s compositions.

Having enjoyed my recent solo gigs so much, I decided to write some new songs with the idea of being able to play them live and solo, unlike my usual way, which is to write songs with the idea of recording them, coming up with fancy arrangements and overdubbing all the instruments, never imagining I might ever try to play them “live”. So I wrote four new songs during late July/early August, songs I can perform live with just a guitar, and decided to record them as well. For the recordings I restricted myself to a maximum of two simultaneous guitars, because I can do that live using a little loop pedal, and there are no vocal harmonies.

Williams arrivò tardi quella sera, quasi alla fine del primo set e appena in tempo per sentire Hibou, Anemone and Bear, ma qualche anno dopo riuscì a ricostruire quanto perduto grazie a un cd dell'impareggiabile Cuneiform Records (Noisette, uscito nel 2000 con l'intero concerto tranne Facelift, brano utilizzato in parte su Third). Ne scrive in questi giorni al suo blog: "I can now admit that in the section of the evening I missed was one of the concert’s highlights: Lyn’s flute solo on Ratledge’s ballad, “Backwards”. Introduced by the composer’s wah-wah’d electric piano, he produces a beautifully constructed improvisation that achieves an excellent blend of Eric Dolphy’s pure-toned inventiveness and Roland Kirk’s funky distortion, the latter feature coming to the fore as the piece goes into a wild Mingus-like 9/8 vamp. (Mingus, along with the Coltrane quartet of “My Favourite Things” and Uncle Meat-era Zappa, seemed to be the Softs’ most powerful influences at the time.) His tenor solos, like the one on Hopper’s “12/8 Theme”, manage to retain their clarity and logic in the heat of a furnace stoked by the non-stop focused clatter of Wyatt’s impassioned drumming."
