Dalle profondità blues di Roots Magic ad altre radici, non meno ricche di magia: Errico Defabritiis e Alberto Popolla in tenuta Improgressive dissotterrano rizomi canterburyani - e crimsoniani - per controllarne la freschezza e portarvi a loro volta nuova linfa. Improgressive consists of Alberto Popolla (clarinets) and Errico Defabritiis (saxophones) a longstanding Italian reeds duo whose work is deliberately inspired by the work of a bunch of British Rock musicians and composers known as the core of the 70's Canterbury music scene. Their first disc is the result of a massive arrangement work of some of the most peculiar compositions by progressive heroes such as Hugh Hopper, Daevid Allen, Kevin Ayers, Phil Milller and Robert Wyatt plus a couple of "extra" numbers chosen from the early King Crimson repertoire. Popolla's imaginative arrangements tend to explore new relationships between melodies, harmonies and rhythms derived from songs and musics originally conceived for rock bands like Soft Machine, Hatfield and the North, Caravan and Matching Mole. The Remote Viewers tornano a farsi vivi con un nuovo lavoro, November Sky, ancora una volta prodotto in proprio presso il quartier generale dell'Oxo Tower londinese e distribuito tramite ReR. La formazione è grossomodo quella della trilogia noir degli ultimi anni, da City of Nets a Pitfall: David Petts, Adrian Northover, Caroline Kraabel, Sue Lynch, John Edwards e Mark Sanders.
Ne scrive Cutler: "Another intriguing set of compositions that don’t do what you expect. Minimal, sort of, keeping its parts in order - with intrusions; some French Noir soundtrack material; thick harmonies, sudden changes of direction and a lot of ideas in a relatively short space of time with more than a fair share of counterintuitivty. A story well worth following in a language of its own."

Dai nastri di alcune sessioni di Ian Carr e Nucleus trasmesse in radio tra la metà degli anni settanta e i primi anni ottanta il compianto Mike King ha composto, poco prima di lasciarci, un agile portfolio del gruppo attraverso un paio delle sue innumerevoli formazioni: Three of a Kind, pubblicato da Gonzo Multimedia. Con Carr ci sono tra gli altri Geoff Castle, Roger Sutton, Trevor Tompkins, Brian Smith e Nic France, e poi anche Charlie Mariano e John Marshall in alcuni brani ispirati da poesie di Robert Graves.

Lo distribuisce anche Wayside: "All of the music is top notch (more famous names came and went, sometimes replaced by less famous names, but there never was a 'bad' edition of Nucleus) and the sound is very good for a rescued document like this. Recommended."

Ci lasciava con un ultimo saluto dieci anni fa, nelle prime ore del 25 dicembre: Derek Bailey. Un grande.

Ha compiuto 45 anni pochi giorni fa l'album Lizard dei King Crimson, terzo della loro lunga carriera, realizzato con non pochi problemi - ma con esiti strabilianti - nel settembre 1970. Ne ricostruisce la genesi e le (s)fortune Sid Smith, in un post al suo blog Postcards From The Yellow Room replicato anche in DGM Live. A proposito del suo rifiuto a entrare stabilmente a far parte della formazione ebbe a dire Keith Tippett: "The terms would have been that I would have had musical input. He knew that I was a strong musical personality and I would have gone in and possibly taken it all in another way with his blessing because we would have been joint bandleaders... I hadn’t long been in London and I’d left Bristol realising that I had to go to London to play with musicians who were more experienced than myself to learn quickly - apart from that I had too much love for the sextet and it would have taken me away from the jazz scene".

Sul futuro - ma anche sul presente - della chitarra, chi aveva idee uniche e originalissime era certamente Hans Reichel. Lo conferma l'intera sua discografia, molta della quale nuovamente disponibile in digitale grazie all'etichetta degli esordi e dei primi anni, la FMP. Chissà poi quali altre meraviglie sarebbero scaturite dai due esemplari cui il chitarrista, anche geniale artista del legno oltre che del design tipografico, stava lavorando più o meno all'epoca della sua prematura scomparsa, quattro anni fa, tra una serie per gli scacchi e una di backgammon.
Un rapido promemoria circa una delle sue altre creature è ricomparso recentemente sotto forma di singolo in vinile verde: Daxophone, per Table Of The Elements (1993). Merita rintracciarlo, magari tramite ReR.

In largo anticipo rispetto alla prevista data del febbraio 2016 è già pronto il doppio cd A Bigger Show, di Mike Westbrook & Company / The Uncommon Orchestra su etichetta ASC Records, distribuito dapprima agli appassionati e amici che hanno in parte contribuito alla sua realizzazione e ora disponibile per la generalità del pubblico tramite il sito web dei musicisti. Uno splendido capitolo nella produzione dei Westbrook, e uno splendido regalo per chiunque.

"The great British composer and bandleader Mike Westbrook has always had a gift for bringing off large scale works that would collapse under their own weight in the hands of almost any other jazz creator – a talent that first came to full fruition with the epic Marching Song way back in 1969. The big projects have usually depended on grants and commissions, and he and partner Kate have toured extensively in trios and small groups, too. Those continue now the pair are settled in Dawlish in South Devon. But Mike Westbrook, the tireless organiser, has also been in evidence in the West Country in the last few years, with occasional performances from a brand new big band. That ensemble is now reconfigured as the 22-piece Uncommon Orchestra, and are now performing a brand new, two hour suite, A Bigger Show, music by Mike, lyrics by Kate. And a spectacular show it is. Three vocalists - Kate Westbrook, Billy Bottle, who also plays electric bass, and Martine Waltier - bring real variety and depth to the songs. Campbell, Salah Ragab, Sigrid Hauff e Chris Cutler, quest'ultimo con l'intero terzo capitolo di File Under Popular - e l'aiuto di Bernhard Hefele per affrontare la complessa sezione discografica. A Hefele subentra oggi Chris Trent, forte dell'esperienza accumulata nel produrre qualche anno fa un altro minuzioso testo analitico, The Earthly Recordings of Sun Ra, e si aggiungono numerose risorse grafiche e iconografiche, estendendo e aggiornando sostanzialmente i materiali pubblicati in precedenza.

Il concerto che si tenne al Real Music Club di Brighton (Regno Unito) lo scorso 8 febbraio doveva servire nelle intenzioni degli organizzatori a raccogliere fondi per il proseguimento delle cure ospedaliere di Daevid Allen, ma alla notizia che il Nostro aveva infine deciso di affrontare in piedi la fase terminale del suo male esso si trasformò in festoso appuntamento in suo onore, per celebrarne lo spirito, la musica e la poesia. Oggi è un documento audio dal titolo Drones for Daevid Gig - The RMC Brighton February 8 2015, promosso in formato fisico e digitale tramite Bandcamp; i proventi delle vendite andranno tutti al Daevid Allen Foundation Trust. The Drones4daevid gig was organised by the Real Music Club as a benefit gig for Daevid Allen, to help with his medical recuperation costs after he had been treated for cancer. Very sadly, a week before the gig, Daevid announced that the cancer had returned, and that he was going to decline further evasive treatment, and bow out with dignity. The gig became a celebration of Daevid's life and works, and a big big thank you to Daevid with fans and performers travelling far and wide to be at this gig. The Real Music Club would like to thank all the performers, artists, the venue and especially the audience who made this gig such a loving celebration. All the performances were played with such passion and warmth for Daevid. All proceeds from sales of this CD will go to the Daevid Allen Foundation Trust.

Dal progetto di un album tutto newyorkese, con il coinvolgimento di amici musicisti del posto, lo scozzese Bill Wells se n'è uscito giusto giusto per Natale con un piccolo capolavoro senza tempo - Nursery Rhymes, per l'etichetta tedesca Karaoke Kalk - prendendo in carico canzoni, canzoncine, storie in rima e filastrocche per bambini. Tante e di tanti tipi, tutte familiari, argute e stucchevoli, fantastiche e sciocchine, perfide e inquietanti: Three Blind Mice e Hickory Dickory Dock, Ding Dong Bell e Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, Oranges and Lemons e Polly Put The Kettle On, Hot Cross Buns e Ride A Cock Horse... Tante e disparate anche le persone interpellate: Norman Blake, Michael Cerveris, Yo La Tengo, Bridget St John, Isobel Campbell, Amber Papini, Syd Straw, perfino Annette Peacock. Grande ruolo ha giocato in particolare Karen Mantler. E l'esempio di Hal Willner, cui l'album è infatti dedicato.

Nursery rhymes become familiar to us from a young age - so familiar, in fact, that we scarcely analyse them as songs in their own right. Becoming entranced by these childhood ditties, Scottish composer Bill Wells decided to re-work some classics in a quite unique setting. Gathering a host of collaborators, new album length project Nursery Rhymes features all host of cult favourites, indie doyens and more. "If people thought it was a bit strange, then they didn't say," Wells remarked recently. "I made it all clear pretty early on in proceedings and everyone seemed up for it." Exploring the hidden darkness behind the lyrics, Bill Wells steers each piece into a quite new arena. "Ultimately, part of the remit of a nursery rhyme was to give your child some of the harsh realities of life, while sugar-coating them with a catchy little melody. But I'm losing that coating and going straight to the nub of the thing."

Sarà la University of the Arts London a custodire il prezioso patrimonio fisico di scritti, manoscritti, appunti, registrazioni e partiture della compianta Lindsay Cooper; a breve dovrebbero concludersi le azioni di catalogazione e archiviazione dei materiali, disponibili anche in digitale a beneficio di ricercatori e appassionati in tutto il mondo grazie al lavoro del dinamico staff di Digital Consulting and Production Services della Cornell University di Ithaca (NY). E' quest'ultimo ad auspicarlo, a chiare e forti lettere: "The Lindsay Cooper Archive includes the musical scores, sketches, and manuscripts of Lindsay Cooper’s work, spanning over 30 years of her career. Although much of her work has been issued (and reissued) on recordings, the scores and manuscripts have never been available to researchers. Currently in a storage locker in North London, the physical materials will have to stay in the UK, where she is well known; if they end up at the University of the Arts London (as they most likely will), it will be many, many years before they are available to scholars. Therefore, a partnership between Cornell and the University of the Arts London will make these scores and archival recordings available much earlier than they would be otherwise. In addition, pending permission from her estate, we would be able to make her manuscripts and print matter available to anybody on the web. Archival resources for this kind of avant-garde are rare, indeed, so this digital collection would be quite important, especially because there is a real paucity of women’s stories in the history of experimental and improvised music."
E chiare e forti risuoneranno le musiche di Lindsay proprio questa settimana, grazie ai concerti allestiti tra le due sponde del Pacifico in California (Mills Performing Group, a Oakland il 5 dicembre) e Giappone (Half the Sky, a Osaka, Nagoya e Akihabara dal 3 al 5 dicembre) con protagonisti tra gli altri Chris Cutler, Yumi Hara Cawkwell, Fred Frith, Zeena Parkins e il Rova. In attesa di una nuova versione di Oh Moscow! promessa per il 2016...
