New music! Giunge purtroppo al termine la collaborazione di David Garland con l'emittente radiofonica newyorkese WNYC, dopo ventotto anni di conduzione dello splendido programma della domenica Spinning on Air. La belga Sub Rosa inaugura una propria linea di pubblicazioni in vinile attingendo in prima battuta agli archivi storici del centro d'arte contemporanea Logos Foundation di Ghent: ne esce un doppio album, Another Evening at Logos 1974/79/81, con estratti da concerti del 1974, 1979 e 1981 di Derek Bailey, COUM e Max Eastley con il Logos Ensemble e del Feminist Improvising Group (Georgie Born, Lindsay Cooper, Maggie Nichols, Sally Potter e Irène Schweizer). Dopo un periodo di relativa inattività - e un ennesimo attacco di pirateria sul web - torna in pista la gloriosa Emanem di Martin Davidson con le ristampe di due lavori di Evan Parker a suo tempo usciti per l'etichetta del sassofonista, la psi: The Snake Decides, un solo per soprano registrato nel 1986 a Oxford da Michael Gerzon, e America 2003, doppio cd con una selezione dai concerti americani svolti quell'anno in trio con Alexander von Schlippenbach e Paul Lovens.

Altre pubblicazioni Emanem, incluse diverse nuove produzioni, sono attese nelle prossime settimane. Immutato rimane il manifesto dell'etichetta: "The Emanem label was founded in 1974 by Martin Davidson in order to publish music too good and too adventurous to be considered by most other labels. In particular, it seemed (and still seems) vitally important to document improvised music that does not use the vagaries of notation as a (somewhat imperfect) means of preservation. Volume dopo volume, si sta ormai completando la pubblicazione della collezione di materiali d'archivio che Gonzo Multimedia ha riservato alla memoria di Hugh Hopper, affidandola alle amorevoli cure del compianto Michael King. Con il numero nove, il penultimo della serie, si ha occasione di seguire l'evoluzione di una delle composizioni più celebri ed eseguite di Hopper, Facelift, mettendo a confronto versioni tratte da concerti dei Soft Machine in varia formazione tra il 1969 e il 1971. Floating Worlds Records rimette in circolazione, con qualche ritocco, la registrazione del concerto tenuto dai Soft Machine - allora Mike Ratledge, Hugh Hopper e Robert Wyatt - al Paradiso ad Amsterdam il 29 marzo 1969: Live at the Paradiso. Il documento è ben noto agli appassionati, e per quanto la diffusione non ne sia mai stata autorizzata dal gruppo a causa di gravi pecche e lacune tecniche nel suono, esso è stato varie volte oggetto di pubblicazione, con varia denominazione, sia in vinile sia in cd. In occasione dell'edizione Voiceprint, vent'anni fa, Hopper tornò sull'argomento: "Holland was always a strong Soft Machine country. The time we played at Amsterdam's Paradiso club was one of several visits that year to the land of windmills and dope smoke. And bootlegs. Not long after we played there, an LP appeared of the gig. Warts (definetely warts) and all, and despite very strong objections from the musicians when asked if we would like to see the performance released. Robert's main objections were to the voice recording - the level comes and goes, and fighting against fuzz bass and organ does no favours when you're trying to sing in tune on fiendishly tricky Ratledge pieces. And there are parts of arrangements missing where the organ packs up and dies occasionally. Having not long before spent several weeks rehearsing and recording the stuff for Volume Two, none of us wanted such a rough version to be released."

Cadillac Records ricompone con il doppio cd Live at Wigmore Hall, 1974 il doppio concerto che il pianista Stan Tracey tenne il 18 giugno di quell'anno nell'esclusivo tempio londinese della classica prima in solo (Eighty One Plus One) e poi in duo con il sassofonista Mike Osborne (Two Part Intention). Pochi mesi dopo Tracey tornò in quella stessa sede assieme a Keith Tippett per registrare l'esordio di T'n'T.
Il primo set era già noto in LP (Alone at Wigmore Hall), il secondo invece è del tutto inedito: "This music is so good it's uncanny. Stan Tracey and Mike Osborne were among Britain's greatest jazz musicians when playing separately (Stan's solo set here is a gem) or in other company. Together, in freeform improvisation, they had an instinctive understanding - empathy, wit, creativity, and humour and seriousness succeeding each other at dazzling speed - that is simply breathtaking, and that gets better and better on repeated listening. It's sensational stuff, and a high point of any kind of music, let alone of British jazz. Full marks to Cadillac Records for making it available once more (and indeed, for making the duo session available for the first time in any format)".

Fratello Mare, a reference to Folco Quilici’s classic film of the same name, is the latest tropical opus from UK born, Italian based musician Mike Cooper. It’s Cooper’s continuing ode to the Pacific, its people and the traditions that have flowed from that part of the world into seemingly endless iterations within contemporary culture. Recorded across 2014, the album dovetails neatly with his other Room40 editions White Shadows In The South Seas and the post-everything classic Rayon Hula. It expands his combining of highly personal lap steel playing, with exotic music and percussion alongside field recordings made on islands across South East Asia and the Caribbean whilst on residencies and other travels. At the record’s heart is a yearning these distant islands that dot the vast oceans. A love letter of sorts, a poetic and dreamlike wandering, that sonically traverses the ever-changing edge of land and sea and Cooper's musical imagination.

Un omaggio al carissimo partner artistico per oltre trent'anni, l'amico e compagno Don Joyce - il genio di Over the Edge, scomparso lo scorso 22 luglio all'età di settantun anni - è alla homepage del sito dei Negativland, già gravemente colpiti a gennaio dalla perdita di un altro storico collaboratore, Ian Allen: "There was Negativland before Don Joyce (though not by much), and there will be Negativland after (indeed, Don pulled back from touring with the group in 2010, though was just as involved as ever in all of our projects, and in fact did his last-ever Over The Edge broadcast only three weeks before he passed away), and he made it clear that he wished for the group to continue on in some fashion if he was the next member to go. At the very least, there are two nearly-completed albums in the works and possible live shows, and, in late 2015, all 34 years of Over the Edge (5000-plus hours’ worth) will be available until the end of time on the Internet Archive, the result of a multi-year archiving project. Lo hanno offerto al pubblico del newyorkese Rockwood Music Hall lo scorso 16 febbraio Adam Minkoff, Anton Fier, Karen Mantler, Brittany Anjou e Mark Marshall sotto il nome Adam Minkoff & Friends. Senza offesa ad alcuno, potevano quasi chiamarsi Golden Palominos (circa 1986).

Su YT c'è un gustoso assaggio della performance di Himmel-Music for Massed Fuzz Organs il mese scorso al Festival Mimi. In azione c'erano per l'occasione Andy Saunders, Glyn Perrin, Richard Miles, Jules Bernable e Chris Cutler, con gli invitati Tom Mugridge e Jake Rousham, Juliano Lacave, Nicolas Debade, Franck Barriac, Louis Ramanitra, Sophie Amiard, Léa Lachat, Philippe Andeol, Lionel Malric, Laurent Rossi e Phil Spectrum.
Il gruppo - non si sa in quale assetto - tornerà presto ospite del londinese Cafe Oto, dove già ha gettato le basi per una prossima produzione discografica. Sulle infernali difficoltà di riprendere efficacemente un simile ensemble, tanto in studio quanto dal vivo, si è scritto: "The Himmel experience is a tricky one to actually capture outside of the live context. It's elusive and complex, countless layers piling up on top of each other in building waves, and while you're paying attention to one aspect an as yet unnoticed major shift uncoils just beneath the surface and alters the dynamics and direction of the whole piece. That's why each of the pieces is at least twenty minutes long; they each need at least that much terrain within which to shift and alter their shape, to transmogrify from one topography to another, and back again, and then elsewhere. So, to try to capture any of it in the studio, or record it live, is a challenge of Herculean proportion."
