Torna su Starkland la splendida collezione Polka from the Fringe, super-classico di Guy Klucevsek apparso in origine in due volumi per la giapponese Eva e ahimé presto spariti dalla circolazione con la chiusura dell'etichetta. La nuova edizione raduna in due cd 29 brani, un libretto con tutti i testi, note aggiornate dallo stesso titolare e un commento di Elliott Sharp, uno dei molti compositori coinvolti nel progetto: "Polka from the Fringe met with immediate popular response – an undercurrent of sly humor seemed to permeate the music, and audiences came away thrilled and excited both by Guy’s fantastic playing and the sheer audaciousness of this innovative undertaking.” Con il fisarmonicista sono i membri della Ain't Nothin' But a Polka Band: Bill Ruyle, John King, David Hofstra e David Garland.

MOPOMOSO stands for MOdernismPOstMOdernism SO what? and was founded in 1991 by guitarist John Russell and pianist, trumpeter and composer Chris Burn to promote improvised music and its relationship to other forms of contemporary music making. Mopomoso has since then presented hundreds of concerts, special events and workshops.
The tour aims to both showcase the work of Mopomoso to a wider audience, and promote the ideas and artists in each city. A series of sets from some of Mopomoso's core players will be complemented with improvisers from each city. With a firm focus on free improvisation, musical references could range from jazz, rock, folk, classical, electronic, world and computer-generated music, representing the broad brush stroke spirit of inclusion embodied in the Mopomoso aesthetic.
About this tour, John Russell says: “In its monthly series, which takes place at The Vortex - ‘London’s listening jazz club’ - Mopomoso offers audiences the chance to hear some of the best music around, in an intimate and friendly setting. E' iniziato ieri a Lugano un giro di concerti di Larry Ochs con Don Robinson, al debutto in Europa nella formazione del duo. Quattro gli appuntamenti in Italia, da oggi al 28 aprile: Roma, Colleretto Giacosa (To), Novara e Ravaldino al Monte (Fc).
Giorni fa Ochs ha presentato il tour con una nota diretta ai sottoscrittori della sua periodica newsletter: "I look forward to travelling with drummer Don Robinson to Europe. Starting in Lugano on April 24, we perform 8 concerts in 9 days for the first time as a duo. We have been playing in the States this winter. The music is really challenging for us, which makes it very much worth traveling all that way to perform it. And the sound, the beauty of a lot of it, makes it worth your effort to come out and hear it live. Born in Mississippi in 1943, Parks was extraordinary even as a child, a musical prodigy and actor who later became a session musician, composer, producer, arranger, lyricist, and singer. His own music is as cinematic, fantastical and even phantasmagorical as it is from the heart. Song Cycle was less conventionally pop, in verse-chorus fashion, than Smile; the mood was something like a baroque psychedelic dream filtered through Disney and music hall. Discover America was a major departure, with most songs written by pre-war Calypso musicians from Trinidad & Tobago but given Parks’ highly individual spin. Clang Of The Yankee Reaper further wove New Orleans, classical and pop strains alongside Calypso and Caribbean rhythms. There have been more albums since, plus film scores, children’s books and arrangements for a dizzying array of talent (including Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt and Rufus Wainwright), but the jewels in Parks’ legacy remain those first three albums, slices of musical history both of their time and truly timeless.

Debutta su Cryptogramophone il progetto 'Disney Sun Ra' di Zeena Parkins The Adorables, con Shayna Dunkelman e Preshish Moments e con l'aiuto di Deep Singh, Dave Sharma, Danny Blume e Kristin Slipp. Ne illustra la genesi Zeena stessa: "This group came about when a choreographer named Neil Greenberg needed a piece and I decided I wanted a real band onstage with the dancers. I didn't know Mike (Preshish Moments) yet, but I knew Shayna and I knew I wanted that orchestral percussion [that she does]. I also knew I wanted electronics and I wanted beats. So Shayna told me about Mikey and the whole thing kind of fell onto the plate. I wrote a set of music and we performed it for two weeks with the dance troupe in 2010. By the time it was over, it was clear, 'oh, this is a band.' I knew I wanted to keep writing for this group. And then gigs just kept coming in... we were getting this great response. It sort of became itself really quickly."

Stormy Six e Moni Ovadia sono insieme stasera a Reggio Emilia - Teatro Ariosto, ore 21.00 - per uno spettacolo musicale e teatrale sulla resistenza armata del ghetto di Varsavia contro i nazisti: Benvenuti nel ghetto.
Inedito il materiale, che così presenta in Doppiozero Umberto Fiori: "Il 19 aprile del 1943 gli ebrei del ghetto di Varsavia – uomini e donne, vecchi e bambini - si ribellavano alla violenza delle SS e tenevano loro testa, armi in pugno, per quasi un mese. Si tratta del primo episodio di resistenza armata contro i nazisti; un episodio tanto più significativo perché a esserne protagonisti - in condizioni di disperata inferiorità militare e di quasi totale isolamento - sono le vittime designate della persecuzione razzista e del genocidio, i “subumani senza onore” dai quali le truppe di Hitler si attendevano solo viltà e sottomissione. Quando Moni Ovadia ha proposto a noi Stormy Six di progettare insieme una serata di rievocazione di quell’episodio, ci siamo messi subito al lavoro. I legami tra il gruppo e Moni risalgono agli anni ’70, ma questa era la prima occasione per una collaborazione diretta, e oltretutto il tema è strettamente legato a quello del nostro disco più conosciuto, Un biglietto del tram (1975), dedicato alla Resistenza. Le canzoni di Benvenuti nel ghetto sono nate come una sorta di “continuazione” di Stalingrado, La fabbrica, Dante di Nanni, Otto settembre: un racconto epico il cui modello è la canzone popolare, da una parte, dall’altra il rock e la tradizione “colta” del Novecento. Con una formula, si potrebbe dire: Woody Guthrie a braccetto con Hans Eisler".

Compie quindici anni di attività l'etichetta tedesca (ora con sede in Francia) Staubgold e per l'occasione ripubblica in vari formati l'intero catalogo - difficilmente rintracciabile altrimenti - dei 49 Americans, allegra brigata di musicisti, praticanti, parenti stretti e passanti casuali pescati da Andrew Brenner nelle fila del London Musicians' Collective e della scena post-punk londinese dei primi anni ottanta: tra questi Steve Beresford, Lol Coxhill, Max Eastley, Viv Albertine, Vivien Goldman, David Toop e Peter Cusack. Ricorda lo stesso Brenner: "The 49 Americans were an experiment in the pursuit of happiness. We were playing because we wanted to play, because we enjoyed being together and seeing what each other could do; musicians and non-musicians surprising each other. We did not take ourselves seriously, but we were serious about that. In the increasingly global market place, there is less and less room for individuals at the top. So we celebrated, not being at the top, but simply being together. Like the Statue of Liberty we held up a shining torch of self-entertainment! Saying: Have fun! Play! Participate! Everyone should be allowed to be an American. Like it says on the dollars: E pluribus unum!"

This ragtag group is quintessentially the most distilled example of the anything-goes, tear-up-the-rulebook fire of the DIY era that was sparked by the punks, yet ultimately fanned by a cross-section of youths, scholars, and intellectuals who sought to truly create something fresh. The 49 Americans was the brainchild of Andrew Brenner, an American expat in London who ended up assembling the ensemble from members of the city's underground rock community (including members of the Slits and Alternative TV) as well as the London Musicians' Collective, a group who counted among their ranks some of the London area's most talented, innovative, and controversial experimental musicians. Brenner also included a number of his close non-musician friends, and the 'band' set out to simply record for fun; with such a wide stylistic net, they could literally attempt anything, and their enthusiasm and joy is what makes their discography so special - it sounds unlike anything else of its era, though its closest contextual ancestors would probably be the Flying Lizards, mainly due to the key involvement of Steve Beresford and David Toop, both of whom played in the Lizards, as well as their General Strike bedroom dub project.

Si inaugura oggi a Londra presso il museo della Royal Academy Of Music la mostra Kenny Wheeler: Master of Melancholy Chaos dedicata alla lunga carriera del trombettista e compositore, oggi ottantatreenne. Il titolo dell'esposizione, che rimarrà aperta per un intero anno, viene da una battuta estrapolata da una recente intervista di Wheeler alla BBC: “Everything I do has a touch of melancholy and a touch of chaos to it. I write sad songs and then I get the musicians destroy them”.

A treasure-trove of music memorabilia from revered trumpeter/composer Kenny Wheeler is on display at the Royal Academy Of Music, London, in a special year-long exhibition entitled ‘Kenny Wheeler: Master of Melancholy Chaos’ running from April 2013-April 2014. The exhibition has been drawn from the Kenny Wheeler archive, which the Academy acquired in 2012, and focuses on seven key albums from Wheeler’s illustrious six-decade career, including handwritten scores and musical sketches that range from a very early arrangement of ‘Stella By Starlight’ through to the manuscript for his latest big band score for ‘The Long Waiting’. Other exhibits include personal memorabilia, instruments, recordings and recent interviews with Wheeler; behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage of his latest big band recording session plus interviews with some of his key contemporaries such as Norma Winstone, Evan Parker and Royal Academy Of Music’s recent visiting tutor, trumpeter Dave Douglas, all talking about Wheeler’s influence and his work past and present.
The exhibition is held in the Royal Academy Of Music museum which is open every weekday (11.30am-5.30pm) and Saturdays (12noon-4pm).

Vocalist/violinist Iva Bittová is internationally known for her unique music which draws on influences from her native Moravia and her lineage in the rich traditions of Slovakia and the Roma people. Her ability to bring those influences together with such modern inspirations as Meredith Monk's wordless vocal pieces, and free improvisation, creates music that feels ancient and new, surprising and familiar at the same time.
Iva is a storyteller who rarely uses actual language to convey the emotions of her stories. Singing wordlessly, or using an implied language of her own, she creates intimate, engrossing narratives. Sometimes she does this performing with large orchestras or small ensembles, and sometimes--as in this case--she performs alone, exposing her artistry in all its subtlety.
David Garland welcomes Iva Bittová to the WNYC Studio to perform and talk about her music. She sings and plays violin simultaneously, sings some songs for voice alone, and with kalimba, drawing chiefly from material on her new ECM album, Iva Bittová. Plus she tells of living in rural upstate New York, and being a film star in the Czech Republic.

E' anche un omaggio allo scomparso Tony Marsh la più recente pubblicazione dell'etichetta britannica Loose Torque, fondata nel 1995 dal bassista Nick Stephens: Free Play, da un concerto del trio di Marsh e Stephens con Jon Corbett a Northwood, nel 2010. Una recensione si legge al blog FreeJazz: "This is in-the-moment music, with no real plan, no preconfigured structure, no longitudinal dynamics, no progression or evolution to speak of, just naked surprises and interaction, raw and authentic, as pure as it gets in terms of sounds, like birds having a great time in the trees, like birds having fun in the trees."

Tra il 1976 e il 1977 Hans Reichel lavorò a due diverse versioni di Erdmännchen, ma solo la seconda - quella registrata a Wuppertal in duo con il chitarrista Achim Knispel - trovò regolare sbocco in un album, pubblicato all'epoca dalla FMP. Oggi viene finalmente alla luce anche la prima versione, realizzata a Berlino con il batterista Sven-Åke Johansson: "Yes, there are TWO Erdmännchens. The two on the cover, of course, and two versions of the album. This one, recorded live in 1976 or 1977, was planned for LP but never released. The eventual Erdmännchen release, FMP 0400, turned out to be a different duo, Reichel with guitarist Achim Knispel. With only two overlapping tunes, this is an entirely different - and entirely new - story in the Reichel saga".

Battiti propone il concerto di K-Space tenuto all'Antica Sinagoga di Ivrea l'1 dicembre 2012 in apertura del festival Musiche Possibili: Tim Hodgkinson, Ken Hyder e Gendos Chamzyryn.

"Per il consueto appuntamento del sabato con la musica dal vivo questa notte trasmettiamo il concerto integrale di K-Space, registrato alla decima edizione del festival Musiche Possibili di Ivrea. Il trio è formato da veterani sperimentatori e ricercatori musicali come Tim Hodgkinson, Ken Hyder e Gendos Chamzyryn che da anni stanno lavorando sulla musica e la cultura dei popoli dell’estremo nord della Russia. Una ricerca che li ha portati ad incrociare il free jazz e il free rock con la musica sacra e lo spirito degli sciamani siberiani con esiti tutt'altro che scontati."

Piazza Verdi oggi ospita l'Artchipel Orchestra - in ottetto per l'occasione - con un saggio del nuovo lavoro sulle musiche dei Soft Machine: "Artchipel Orchestra è un progetto del batterista, compositore e direttore d'orchestra Ferdinando Faraò. La formazione è caratterizzata anche dalla trasversalità anagrafica, perché dà spazio a giovani musicisti di talento, che hanno occasione di suonare accanto a nomi autorevoli del jazz italiano. Anche per questo è da considerare come una sorta di vivaio, di laboratorio permanente. Ora il progetto musicale di Artchipel si arricchisce e si apre un nuovo percorso di ricerca. Faraò ha scelto i Soft Machine e sta lavorando a nuovi arrangiamenti che faranno parte del secondo cd del gruppo, in cui composizioni di autori quali Robert Wyatt, Hugh Hopper e Mike Ratledge verranno proposte in chiave jazzistica contemporanea. Questo sabato ascolteremo brani dei Soft Machine (con arrangiamenti di F. Faraò) interpretate dal vivo da Ferdinando Faraò alla batteria, Giusy Lupis alla voce, Marco Mariani alla tromba, Felice Clemente al sax soprano, Paolo Profeti al sax alto, Rudi Manzoli al sax tenore, Beppe Barbera al pianoforte, Gianluca Alberti al basso elettrico." Pianist Misha Mengelberg and drummer Han Bennink have been instantly composing together for half a century in the Instant Composers Pool Orchestra, one of the world's longest-running improvisation projects. The ten-piece ensemble that they co-founded draws on the jaunty swing of Blue Note-era musicians such as Herbie Nichols and Thelonious Monk within avant-garde parameters: the pieces often have no pre-ordained structure, and the players can inject 'viruses', or themes known by the group, at any point in proceedings. The music veers from the arthouse to the circus, with a sense of surprise never far away.

Nel 1990 Keith Tippett e Andy Sheppard pubblicarono 66 Shades of Lipstick, album di studio dedicato ai Blue Notes e prodotto da Robert Fripp. Delle sessioni di registrazione, effettuate dal 9 all'11 aprile, riferì Tippett: "Andy and I imposed one rule upon ourselves before entering the studio. That rule being that no musical preparation was to be made individually or collectively. The music had to be carved like sculpture from the air. After three days the sculpture was completed".
