Miles Mellough di Birds With Broken Wings compone un ritratto di Sean O'Hagan e The High Llamas scandagliandone la discografia e raccogliendo le osservazioni di alcuni collaboratori di AllMusic. Il gruppo intanto promette di ritornare sulle scene prima della fine del 2012: "We have been pursuing other projects for most of the year. Sean has delivered a soundtrack with Tim Gane for Marc Fitoussi's new movie and collaborated with Rio's Domenico Lancellotti on a new record. Tutto esaurito martedì scorso al londinese Cafe Oto per una serata dedicata a John Cage, con la partecipazione di Stewart Lee, Tania Chen e Steve Beresford per l'esecuzione di Indeterminacy e di Alan Tomlinson per Solo for Sliding Trombone. ‘Indeterminacy’ was a 1959 double LP on the Folkways label by John Cage and David Tudor. Cage read ninety of his stories, each one, whether long or short, lasting one minute. Unheard by Cage, Tudor simultaneously played the piano and other things in another room. One day, pianists Tania Chen and Steve Beresford were listening to this record and decided that they would like to do their own version. They hit on Stewart Lee immediately as the first choice to read the stories. He is an excellent stand-up comedian and is very interested in experimental music. The trio’s version is usually forty minutes. The players are in the same room but do their best to not hear Stewart’s reading. They play music on and in a piano and use other small sound sources.

È iniziata ieri la serie di concerti di addio che il Willem Breuker Kollektief ha deciso di intraprendere in Canada e Stati Uniti per ricordare il suo fondatore, scomparso due anni fa. Un cd antologico con interpretazioni di musiche di Breuker e Sweelinck è stato pubblicato per l'occasione. Attualmente fanno parte del longevo ensemble Hermine Deurloo, Frans Vermeerssen, Maarten van Norden, Andy Altenfelder, Sjors Pancras, Andy Bruce, Bernard Hunnekink, Henk de Jong, Arjen Gorter e Rob Verdurmen.
The final USA/Canada tour of the Kollektief takes place between September 25 and October 6, 2012; we'll be performing in Rochester, Montreal, Chicago, Ottawa, Philadelphia, New York and Pittsburgh... In a final panorama of the work of its late leader, the Willem Breuker Kollektief presents Breuker the composer, giving an overview by performing representative pieces written in each period of his life, from 1965 on. These compositions are placed in the historical context of the years in which they were written. The program includes pieces never before played by the WBK, some predating its inception in 1974. During his 45 years of activity on stages all around the world, Willem Breuker (1944-2010) has been the instigator of formative listening experiences for generations of curious audiences worldwide, and thus influenced the development of music in many ways - as a powerful and irreverent performer and improviser, but also as a composer of orchestral, chamber and solo works and of music for movies and the theatre. For 35 years he was part of the Willem Breuker Kollektief, ten musicians-improvisers who became his main musical outlet and with whom he took his music to all continents. With most of its members still present after 30+ years, the Kollektief now pays a final homage to its instigator, applying its musical experience to a broad overview of works by Willem Breuker the composer, written in various eras and including material not performed before.

Edgard Varèse è in questi giorni oggetto di attenzione presso la Radio 4 olandese: ogni sera, fino a venerdì 21 settembre, Jan Rot ne presenta le opere più celebri in Componist van de week, in diretta a partire dalle ore 19.30 e successivamente negli archivi podcast del programma.
Edgard Varèse (1883-1965) sloeg in de eerste helft van de vorige eeuw muzikale wegen in die niemand daarvoor had bewandeld en werd geconfronteerd met onbegrip en afwijzing. Nu is zijn pionierswerk en grote invloed op elektronische en hedendaagse muziek volledig geaccepteerd en wordt nog steeds bewonderd. Vandaag de eerste van vijf afleveringen over Edgard Varèse (samenstelling Jan Rot).

Sorpresa! Nell'anno dei festeggiamenti a John Cage Doron Gura ha voluto testare quanto silenzio e quanto suono d'ambiente ci siano nella versione digitale del famigerato 4'33. Su Spotify, per esempio...
A few years ago when Spotify came out my first impulse was to do a few quick searches to see how comprehensive their library was. One of my first searches was for 4'33 and while I was pleased to see it was there I was surprised to hear how noisy it was. It was a first glimpse into the alternate musical universe of Spotify where classic 60s albums have release dates of 2006 and Straight Outta Compton can play with "clean" lyrics you never knew existed. John Cage's most famous work has always been about the context in which it's listened to: the sounds of the hall or an audience shifting in their seats and coughing. A "room tone" for lack of a better term. The same is true when listening to 4'33 on Spotify. For reasons unknown - and unlike on iTunes or Amazon - the work throws Spotify's audio encoder for a loop. In a sense 4'33 gives a physical form to something that's always been invisible, allowing us to hear for the first time the sounds of Spotify's audio encoder. And when playing the three different movements of 4'33 as separate songs the experience can also be interrupted by ads, which extends the listening time to over 5 minutes.
It's gratifying to see 4'33 work so well on Spotify. It gives it a room tone.

Ultima is Scandinavia’s largest contemporary music festival, and since 1991 it has been a key arena for contemporary music and related art forms. The festival became a designated “knutepunkt” (cultural hub) in 2006 and is supported by the Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs and Oslo City Council. Ultima is a foundation with 18 members, all of them professional cultural institutions or organisations. The festival takes place during September and is staged at venues all around Oslo. Throughout its twenty-year history, all kinds of locations have served as Ultima concert venues. Events are staged both in large, established venues such as the Norwegian National Opera & Ballet, Oslo Concert Hall and the University of Oslo’s Great Hall as well as in small clubs, shop premises, industrial premises, museums, schools and outdoors. Since 1980 the creative collective known as Negativland have been collaboratively creating collage works in fine art, music, CDs, video, radio, and live performance using appropriated sounds, objects, images, and text. They have been sued twice for copyright infringement, fought back, and their work is now referenced and taught in many college courses in the US and has been written about in over 150 books (including "No Logo" by Naomi Klein). Since those two lawsuits, Negativland have been aggressively and publicly involved in advocating significant reforms of our nations copyright laws, with recent visits to Capitol Hill to speak to the staff of various Senators and Congressmen. Our Favorite Things is Negativland's first retrospective exhibit in Los Angeles, and is a comprehensive survey of both current and older visual art works that have also been exhibited in New York, Minneapolis, Seattle, London, Houston, and Art Basel. The members of Negativland live and work in California, Washington, North Carolina, and Massachusetts, so this opening reception with a live performance is a true rarity not to be missed!

Coincide con il suo sessantesimo compleanno - pochi giorni fa, il 17 agosto - l'uscita di un suo nuovo libro di testi e riflessioni estetiche sul teatro: Heiner Goebbels, Ästhetik der Abwesenheit (Theater der Zeit, 2012).
Der international renommierte und vielfach ausgezeichnete Komponist und Theatermacher Heiner Goebbels ist ein Grenzgänger zwischen den Künsten. Seine Werke, so heißt es in der Begründung der Jury zur Verleihung des Kunstpreises Rheinland-Pfalz 2010, "sprengen sowohl den tradierten Rahmen der Konzertmusik als auch den des herkömmlichen Theaters. Er setzt Raum und Licht, Wort und Bewegung ebenso selbstverständlich und virtuos ein wie Instrumente und Stimmen, erfundenes oder gefundenes Material, um seine musiktheatralischen Konzepte zu realisieren." Heiner Goebbels hat seine künstlerische Arbeit und die zeitgenössische Theaterpraxis immer auch theoretisch reflektiert. Theater ist für ihn ein komplexes Wechselspiel zwischen der Polyphonie von Klang, Licht, Raum und der Wahrnehmung des Zuschauers. An die Stelle von Repräsentation tritt das Spiel mit der Abwesenheit - von Figur, dramatischer Handlung und des Schauspielers im Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit. Es ist diese Abwesenheit, die der Imagination des Zuschauers einen Spielraum eröffnet und eine ästhetische Erfahrung ermöglicht. Ästhetik der Abwesenheit versammelt anlässlich des 60. Geburtstages von Heiner Goebbels am 17. August 2012 die wichtigsten Texte zum Theater in einem Band, zusammen mit einem vollständigen Werkverzeichnis.

I sessant'anni li ha compiuti l'anno scorso, ma a Jon Rose la festa di compleanno il Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts di Northbridge (Australia) l'ha fatta ieri, dedicandogli un programma tutto su misura: On a String-Jon Rose Was 60.
On a String celebrates Jon Rose's 60th birthday last year and is both dedicated to and inspired by him. This concert is tied together by the idea of the string, the thread, the line - a crucial part of Rose's innovative new music practice for many years. Guest artists, guitarists Ant Gray and Bill Darby, as well as Melbourne ensemble Golden Fur will feature on the night as well as several world premiere's including Jone Rose's The Auctioneer Says and a tribute to American alt-rockers Low.
For over 35 years, Rose has been at the sharp end of new, improvised, and experimental music and media. A polymath, he is at much at home creating large environmental multi-media works as he is playing the violin on a concert stage. Central to this practice has been 'The Relative Violin' project, a unique output, rich in content, realising almost everything on, with, and about the violin and string music in general. He has appeared on over 60 albums, and worked with artists such as Kronos Quartet, Derek Bailey, John Cage and John Zorn.

In un video su Vimeo Robert Wyatt parla del suo contributo al progetto di Jean Pierre Muller 7 x 7th Street, in esposizione al Summerhall di Edinburgo fino al 27 settembre.
Belgian neo-pop artist, Jean Pierre Muller’s new show “7 x 7th Street” opens at Summerhall. Legendary musicians Robert Wyatt, Terry Riley, Nile Rodgers, Archie Shepp, Sean O’Hagan, Mulatu Astatke and Kassin join with Muller to create a stunning visual and audio mix that combines layers of their diverse history collaged with new and original audio compositions. Somewhere between the two spheres of truth and storytelling lives an environment full of energy that is home to seven of Muller’s mystical shrines will be displayed outside in the street.

Magma e Orchestre National de Jazz con il programma "Around Robert Wyatt" hanno condiviso il palcoscenico un paio di sere fa a Parigi, ospiti della rassegna Jazz à la Villette. Alcuni musicisti della sezione fiati dell'ONJ hanno perfino dato man forte a Vander e soci per il brano conclusivo della serata, Maahnt.
