We're thrilled to issue the first release on Cafe Oto's in-house label – OtoRoku. Available in a deluxe vinyl edition and a high quality download '...The Worse The Better' is a recording of the stunning first set performed by the trio of Peter Brötzmann, Steve Noble and John Edwards at Cafe Oto in January 2010 during Brötzmann's first residency at the venue. It was also the first time this trio had played together. The concert was recorded at Cafe Oto by Shane Browne, and mastered by Andrea Lubich at Dubplates & Mastering, Berlin. The vinyl edition comes with two colour silkscreened artwork by Peter Brötzmann printed on acid-free archival card stock and the vinyl (pressed on 180g virgin vinyl at Record Industry, The Netherlands) is housed in a two colour 300gsm Oto-Roku stock inner sleeve.

Torna in circolazione, per la prima volta in vinile, l'album Danger in Paradise realizzato da Steve Beresford e David Toop con sigla General Strike, prodotto con David Cunningham tra il 1979 e il 1982 ai tempi della comune ventura nei Flying Lizards. In origine uscì su cassetta (Touch, 1984), in versione differente da quella poi diffusa in cd (Piano, 1995), e che tempo fa recuperò integralmente Continuo: "Steve Beresford and David Toop were frequent collaborators during the 1970s, either on the Obscure label or on Toop’s own Quartz label, with such releases as Steve Beresford’s cassette Three Pullovers in 1975; Beresford, Eastley, Burwell & Toop Whirled Music, in 1979; or Alterations (incl. Steve Beresford) Up Your Sleeve LP, in 1980. A classically-trained piano player, Beresford got involved with the British improvisation scene in the 1970s, especially with the Company group and festival (many records on Incus). In the early 1980s, Toop and Beresford were members of David Cunningham’s band the Flying Lizards, whose 1984 LP Top Ten on Statik, was entirely made of covers. As General Strike, the duo crafted elaborated miniatures from dub-like bass-lines, exotic keyboards and toy instruments, throwing in many references to dub, film music, Ryuichi Sakamoto’s neo-classicism and Sun Ra (on three covers, where Lol Coxhill contributes saxophone)."

Compositeur, improvisateur, peintre, sculpteur y compris de certains de ses propres instruments, fondateur ou co-fondateur de groupes comme Perception, Zao, Neffesh-Music ou Yog, il a également été membre de Magma en 1971 et 1972. Persuadé que la recherche permanente d’innovation est nécessaire à l’évolution du langage musical, mais qu’elle n’a de sens que si elle s’inscrit dans un cheminement personnel, il a multiplié les expériences, les formations et les enregistrements. Interrogé sur ses influences, il a coutume de dire: "Mon grand-père est Bela Bartok et mon père est John Coltrane".

Room40 inaugura le proprie pubblicazioni del 2012 con Distant Songs of Madmen, titolo shepardiano per un album di Mike Cooper tratto da un suo concerto in solo dell'anno scorso: lo si può ottenere presso il sito dell'etichetta in download gratuito, quale omaggio al chitarrista nell'anno del suo settantesimo compleanno.
Scrive Cooper: "This is a recording of a live concert recorded in Palermo/Sicily in June 2011. It preceded a set by my avant blues trio Truth In The Abstract Blues invited to Palermo by Lelio Giannetto to play a concert with Eugene Chadbourne and then, the following evening, our own set. Lelio asked me if I would play an 'acoustic folk set'. This was as near as I could get fulfilling his request. Some arrangements of some of my favourite songs and some original songs with extended improvised intermezzi. The choice of songs is, as always, with a view to being entertaining, poetic, political and provocative [...] The instrumental interludes are all free improvisations, in the manner of all 'living' folk traditions, as are the backing for the songs for the most part. All my electronic parts are constructed as I play from live sampling of my acoustic guitar. Nothing pre-pepared or pre-recorded. I find most 'folk' singers, folk clubs and festivals are incredibly conservative these days and my wish is that a niche might be found in there for some forward musical movement and thinking to bring itself into the 21st century and that this cd might be a small contribution toward that end."

Salutato il 2011 con un brindisi di addio alla 'mitica' Gail Colson, suo braccio destro fin dagli inizi di carriera, Peter Hammill inaugura il 2012 ripensando il progetto Pno, Gtr, Vox espandendolo a box di ben sette cd - Pno, Gtr, Vox Box - finemente autoprodotto in elegante edizione a tiratura limitata: scelta un filino autoindulgente, che farà tuttavia felici duemila suoi fan esponenti della 'touch & feel generation'. Scrive Hammill: "Over the last decades it’s been my feeling that there should always be a CD release availabe which gives a picture of what’s been the main drive in live performance in the preceding period. Successively, we’ve had Room Temperature, Typical and Veracious. Currently occupying the slot – and likely to do so for the foreseeable future – is, of course, Pno, Gtr, Vox, released last September. As you’ll know, this represents a version of the guitar only, piano only shows with which I began my residence in Tokyo in 2010, with performances taken from the Japanese shows and also from the UK shows in the same year. A double CD is, I think, a decent artefact to leave out there as a (semi-) permanent exemplar of Performance. But while compiling the discs from all the available material it came to me that a specific, bigger, thing could also come out of the various shows. Hence, as the first Fie! release of 2012, we have Pno, Gtr, Vox Box: a seven cd box set of live songs from the same sources."

Torna in circolazione a trent'anni dalla sua prima pubblicazione uno degli album di Richard Thompson più particolari della sua discografia, interamente strumentale e composto quasi per intero da brani della tradizione: Strict Tempo!, ristampato poche settimane fa da Omnivore Recordings in una speciale edizione commemorativa.

For over 40 years, Richard Thompson has been the guitarists’ guitarist, the songwriters’ songwriter, and a consummate artist. As a founder of the legendary British folk-rock group Fairport Convention, through the ’70s releases with his then-wife, Linda Thompson, to his highly successful solo career and work as a session player for other artists, Thompson is amassing an archive of recordings and compositions nearly unequaled in modern music history. His solo career can be traced to 1972’s Henry The Human Fly, after which he went on to record a string of critically acclaimed albums with Linda Thompson. It wasn’t until 1981 that Thompson released another solo album. Not surprisingly, due to his gifts as an instrumentalist, Strict Tempo! was an instrumental album that showcased his extraordinary talents, with Thompson playing most of the instruments himself, accompanied only by former Fairport bandmate Dave Mattacks on drums/percussion.
Strict Tempo! was originally released in 1981 on Thompson’s own imprint, Elixir, and later reissued by the Hannibal, label but has been out of print for some time. The year 2011 marks the 30th Anniversary of this dexterous collection of traditional jigs and reels - with an original Thompson composition and a Duke Ellington cover thrown in for good measure. Omnivore Recordings is proud to celebrate the reissue of this recording by releasing it both digitally and on CD. The first run of the CD is packaged in a special “greeting card” style sleeve and features new notes on each song by Thompson.

Martin Davidson raccoglie nell'album The Sun per la sua etichetta Emanem alcuni lavori rari o inediti di Steve Lacy del periodo 1967-1973, infiammati dalla protesta contro la guerra in Vietnam. C'è anche il controverso brano in quattro parti The Woe, qui nell'unica registrazione completa esistente, quella della sua ultima esecuzione alla vigilia della firma del trattato di pace. Scriveva Lacy: "Conceived in the horrors of the Vietnam War, it is a melodrama in four parts for quintet, two cassettes of war noises (air & ground) and voice. (The cassettes were played in the studio.) This piece was the principal music we performed during the last two years of the USA's involvement in Vietnam. This was the last time we played it. It was recorded (the night before the peace treaty was signed) in its entirety, and broadcast in Switzerland. I have no idea what the reaction was, if any. The Woe is dedicated to Ho Chi Minh and all the people of Vietnam".

Il concerto della London Jazz Composers Orchestra tenuto il 21 maggio 2008 allo Schaffhauser Jazzfestival, ripreso da Jürg e Marianne Rufer, è ora un dvd per la Intakt Records. Un po' del Rock in Opposition Festival di Cap'Découverte si trasferisce per una sera nei pressi di Lione, spiegando alto il vessillo della scorsa edizione: Univers Zéro + Présent + Aranis = Once Upon a Time in Belgium. Ad aprire le cerimonie, con il concerto in solo per pianoforte e voce che l'anno scorso non poté presentare al festival, sarà Christian Vander. Il 3 febbraio 2012 a Les Abattoirs, 18 route de l'Isle d'Abeau, Bourgoin Jallieu.

Les Abattoirs, intrépide et originaux n’ont pas peur d’aller explorer les contreforts de la musique actuelle. Du progressif baroque, du rock de chambre… Ca vous parle ? C’est au festival Rock In Opposition que l’on déniche ce genre de chose: improbable, unique et lumineuses! Avec en première partie de soirée le batteur charismatique du groupe Magma au piano, la suite ne peut être qu’exceptionnelle. Tim Hodgkinson (1949, Gran Bretagna) laureato in antropologia a Cambridge, è co-fondatore nel 1968 del gruppo radicale (musicalmente e politicamente) Henry Cow. Hodgkinson ha perseguito un cammino creativo instancabilmente critico e realmente sperimentale. Istintivamente anti-istituzionale, la sua attività musicale personale trova l'universalità attraverso un approccio che privilegia l'improvvisazione e la ricerca etnomusicologica. Attraverso l'improvvisazione ottiene nuovi modelli di instabilità e di trasformazione timbrica, nonché un senso di resistenza alle abitudini stilistiche e tecniche. Dagli anni '90, in seguito allo studio in loco della tradizione musicale e spirituale siberiana, il focus dei suoi lavori si è spostato dall'enfasi combinatoria e processuale, all'indagine fenomenologica dell'evento acustico. Ha pubblicato articoli sulla musica improvvisata, concreta, su etnomusicologia e sciamanismo, e sui problemi estetici legati all'impatto delle nuove tecnologie sulla composizione musicale contemporanea.
