Pronto il nuovo album di Charles Hayward One Big Atom, registrato in solitudine qualche mese fa negli spazi di una biblioteca londinese del primo Novecento, la Deptford Central Library, oggi sede della cooperativa artistica Lewisham Arthouse. Lo pubblica l'etichetta Continuity Records, la stessa che quattro anni fa documentò il debutto di Clear Frame, il quartetto di Hayward con Lol Coxhill, Hugh Hopper, Orphy Robinson, con ospite Robert Wyatt.

Un nuovo titolo si aggiunge alla discografia di Bob Downes, New York Suite, frutto di registrazioni effettuate a Londra nel 1979 - con aggiunte e piccoli ritocchi compiuti quest'anno - nell'intento di cogliere aspetti e stati d'animo suscitati da un recente viaggio nella Grande Mela. In quintetto con il flautista e sassofonista inglese c'erano per l'occasione Brian Godding, Paul Rutherford, Paul Bridge e Denis Smith. Così commenta Bruce Lee Gallanter, di Downtown Music Gallery: "In many ways, this disc is a long lost gem of late seventies British jazz/rock at its best with no cliches or obvious direction involved. Each piece does a great job of evoking a certain apprehensive or sleazy vibe that was very much a part of what NYC was and sometimes still is about. Sometimes Mr. Downes has an odd sense of humor which is something you really need to deal with the unexpected things that occur in our fair (unfair?) city. And I should know since I deal with it almost every day".

Si intitola Sam's Enchanted Evening, e vede in scena il solo Randy e il pianista Joshua Raoul Brody - ma l'idea iniziale era quella di un'orchestra di quaranta elementi - uniti in un racconto musicale che tratta di denaro, amore, famiglia e guerra sullo sfondo delle vicende traumatiche di un amico d'infanzia ricordate attraverso Moon River, Walk On By, Born To Be Wild, Mac The Knife e Paint It Black e molti altri classici. The impossible-to-pin-down Residents present yet another facet to their long career as innovators in pop music, performance art, video, and new media: a stage play. Originally conceived for 40-piece orchestra, this workshop production features the Residents' singer Randy, accompanied by long-time Marsh stalwart Joshua Raoul Brody, relating in story and song the life of Randy's childhood friend, Sam. This will be a rare opportunity to see a Residents production up-close, intimate, and stripped to the barest of production elements -- the first all-acoustic Residents show!

A remarkable and distinctive vocalist, Dagmar Krause is recognised as a major interpreter of the German song tradition. With the release of her 80s albums Supply & Demand and Tank Battles she earned the acclaim of critics around the world. She is considered to be a leading exponent of the songs by Bertholt Brecht, Kurt Weill and Hanns Eisler. A magnetic performer, possessing a ferocious intensity and passion, Krause is returning to this repertoire for the first time in several years. In the mid-Sixties, Scottish guitarist Bert Jansch began blending influences to create a unique, expressive technique on the acoustic guitar. Jansch died a few weeks ago, on Oct. 5th, but his influence and example live on, and can be heard in the work of many guitarists who explore the potential of the acoustic guitar. Host David Garland presents some of Jansch's solo work, his work with the band Pentangle, and new music by the young Irish guitarist Cian Nugent, and Philadelphia songwriter Meg Baird.
Pressoché pronto per ReR Megacorp il nuovo album di Bob Drake, il suo settimo, dal titolo Bob's Drive-In. Quattordici canzoni prima costruite in studio dal solo Drake, la maggior parte delle quali poi eseguite e registrate dal vivo in quartetto con David Kerman, David Campbell e Kavus Torabi. Il cd ne accoglie entrambe le versioni: un esempio, Recreational Guide to the Solar System, è su Soundcloud.
Scrive Chris Cutler: "A set of twisty, forty-ideas-a-minute, niftily arranged, irredeemably eccentric, but strangely brilliant songs that skip blithely across genre borders - from Nashville through the Miskatonic by way of the Beach Boys... even the production values range across the history of recording, sometimes switching inside a single song; so it's a high-information ride - but still engagingly listenable. So far so good: another crafted, dense, idiosyncratic studio album. Now comes the twist. Finished with his versions, Bob now sends the raw songs - melody and chords only - to Dave Kerman (ds), David Campbell (bs, vc) and Kavus Torabi (guit, vc) and, a few months later, they all assemble at the Crumbling Tomes studio to work the songs up for a performance. Bob is in the band but the band is not being taught his interpretations and arrangements; it has to find its own. At the end of the rehearsal they give a show to an invited audience which is recorded, as it is. So now we have a second great album - quite different from Bob's own. On the CD, both versions sit side-by-side, each very different, but still very closely linked to the other. Fun to listen to as well as being a study, if you are so inclined. That's experimental".

Christian Vander dedica un album al suo principale ispiratore e mentore: John Coltrane, l’homme suprême. Scrive: "Le 17 juillet 1967 le temps s’est arrêté… A l’âge de 40 ans le grand saxophoniste John Coltrane nous a quitté. J’ai eu la chance de découvrir très jeune ce musicien exceptionnel, la beauté , la spiritualité, la force et aussi la fragilité de ses notes. L’expression de ce son envoûtant qui me parlait comme une voix. Dès ce moment il est devenu mon pain quotidien. Indispensable. Nul ne peut ignorer aujourd’hui l’immensité de son œuvre visionnaire. Elle résonne encore sur toutes les musiques d’aujourd’hui et certainement de demain. Ce disque a été enregistré jour après jour, du 17 Juillet, date de son départ, au 21 Juillet, jour de ses funérailles. Chaque jour, une offrande, un don musical, poétique, pour lui, réalisé en temps réel. Le 21 à minuit, le disque était terminé."

Era in programma tra pochi giorni, ma è slittata a febbraio 2012 la proiezione sul Canale 4 della BBC del film Playing Against Time che vede protagonista Barbara Thompson nella sua tenace lotta alla malattia idiopatica di Parkinson: "This is a 75 min. 'musical-medico' documentary about Barbara's fight to keep performing, while suffering from her ever deteriorating Parkinson's condition. It's directed by Mike Dibb, who was responsible for the original film about B&J, 'Jazz, Rock & Marriage' back in '79 and the subsequent award winning Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett & Astor Piazzolla films. Originally scheduled for November 2011, the BBC have decided to show this film during a 'jazz weekend' planned for transmission on BBC 4 sometime in February 2012.The film has already had several screenings in London and all those present, Parkinson sufferers, healthcare professionals, musicians and other interested parties have been both moved and lavish in their praise of the information it imparts and the overall message of hope that it brings regarding the future treatment of all debilitating conditions affecting the brain. The film is underscored by Barbara's music throughout."

Un appuntamento ormai storico per gli appassionati di espressioni musicali che non trovano risalto nelle trasmissioni mainstream, e per chi non ha paura di mischiare linguaggi diversi: musiche medioevali e avanguardie elettroniche, free jazz e musiche per ambiente, danze etniche e partiture contemporanee, improvvisazione e composizione, avant rock e canzone, silenzio e rumore. Battiti trasmette domani sera, a partire dalla mezzanotte, la versione audio del progetto The Table of Earth, presentato al Ravenna Festival nel giugno dello scorso anno. Ne sono titolari David Moss (voce e tavolo sensibile) e Damiano Meacci (progetto sonoro e sistemi interattivi), membro del collettivo Tempo Reale. La performance si svolge attorno a un grande tavolo di lavoro dove trovano posto oggetti, strumenti, sensori e microfoni, attraverso i quali i musicisti coinvolti danno vita a una storia sonora immaginaria ispirata ai temi dello sviluppo sostenibile, dell'ambiente e dell'ecologia.

Si tiene domani sera al Kings Place il debutto londinese di Say Hi to the Rivers and the Mountains, sorta di racconto teatrale che Jonathan Coe ha scritto basandosi sulle musiche e le canzoni di Sean O'Hagan e The High Llamas. In scena gli attori Henry Goodman, Peter Cartwright e Vivienne Avramoffe con gli High Llamas al completo: "Say Hi to the Rivers and the Mountains tells the story of a young, working class poet called Bobby, who grows up on a brutalist 1960s housing estate and unwittingly falls in love with Susan, the daughter of the architect who designed it. Their thwarted relationship, stretching over several decades and including Susan’s unhappy marriage to another architect, Jack, spans the entire history of the estate from design to demolition".
Nella prima parte della serata Coe dialoga con O'Hagan e parla con Louis Philippe anche a proposito del rapporto tra musica e parola nella sua produzione letteraria, citando quale precursore di Say Hi il racconto breve 9th and 13th - a suo tempo sfociato in un album Tricatel - e quindi proponendone la lettura integrale, accompagnato al pianoforte dal fido Danny Manners.

La musica improvvisata britannica è protagonista assoluta del festival Just Not Cricket!, dal 6 all'8 ottobre a Berlino presso l'HBC di Karl-Liebknecht Strasse. Curatore del programma è il regista Antoine Prum, che tra gli ospiti ha voluto Steve Beresford, Tony Bevan, Gail Brand, Lol Coxhill, Rhodri Davies, John Edwards, Dominic Lash, Phil Minton, Eddie Prévost, Orphy Robinson, Mark Sanders, Alex Ward e Trevor Watts. Nei giorni del festival inizierà la lavorazione di un lungometraggio dedicato alla scena storica e a quella attuale dell'improvvisazione in Gran Bretagna, con riprese dei concerti e conversazioni con i musicisti raccolte da Stewart Lee.
Just Not Cricket! brings together the creme de la creme of British free improvised music for a three-day event in the centre of Berlin. Surveying four generations of musicians – from 1960s pioneers such as Lol Coxhill, Eddie Prevost and Trevor Watts to emerging artists like Shabaka Hutchings, Matthew Bourne and Tom Arthurs – it bears witness to the exceptional liveliness of a scene which despite consistent lack of public support has not only managed to survive, but has continually brought forth new generations of exciting and original artists. Just Not Cricket! is curated by Antoine Prum in collaboration with British saxophonist Tony Bevan and Helma Schleif, long-time coordinator of the Total Music Meetings in Berlin. The concerts also mark the beginning of a documentary film on the history, past and present, of the British free improvised music scene. Beautiful deluxe reissue on heavy vinyl with 3 colour silkscreened tip-on sleeves of this seminal Central European free jazz blow-out from 1968, only Brotzmann’s second album as leader and still one of the founding documents of European improvisation. A parallel to John Coltrane’s epochal Ascension, Machine Gun combines ferociously aggressive ensemble playing that mimic the sounds of artillery with some incredible break-out soloing from Evan Parker, Fred Van Hove, Willem Breuker and Brotzmann. In between the walls of sheet metal there are occasional big band vamps that function as transports to earlier big band traditions as the group simultaneously honour and raze jazz tradition. The line-up is phenomenal, with the horns of Parker, Breuker and Brotzmann going up against two drummers – Han Bennink and Sven Johansson – two bassists – Peter Kowald and Buschi Niebergall – and pianist Fred Van Hove. Still one of the greatest free jazz sides ever recorded and central to any collection of free jazz.
