Al festival Unlimited di Wels, nel corso dell'edizione del 2009 da lei stessa curata, Ikue Mori lo aveva presentato dal vivo con l'ausilio di Mark Nauseef, Makigami Koichi e per l'occasione Kazuhisa Uchihashi; in una versione registrata in studio qualche mese dopo, il suo lavoro di rilettura elettronica di alcune storie Kibyoshi - ce n'è un'intera collezione online, presso Tokyo University - diventa ora un dvd per l'etichetta Tzadik.

Kibyoshi (“yellow covers”) were popular picture-books produced in the middle of the Edo Period (1600-1860). They combined woodblock printed scenes with satirical text and dialogue. The text moves through the image like sound through space. With a distinctive look and layout, the illustration filled most of each page with the remaining space being used for the description of scenes and dialog between characters. These stories would create the most preposterous views of art, culture, religion and all aspects of people's daily lives. The woodblock printed illustrations and text of Kibyoshi pointed its satire at the faults and warts of contemporary society with a sharp focus on gossip, literature, political affairs and current events. Truth and fact were reversed, inverted and twisted severely creating its own reality in which decadent, promiscuous and indulgent behaviors were frequent targets for parody, ridicule and folly.

Una rara intervista a Maggie Thomas, con riferimenti al suo lavoro con Henry Cow, Art Bears, News from Babel ma soprattutto al suo ruolo nella realizzazione del 'famigerato' concerto dei Gong nel monastero di Montserrat il 30 giugno 1973, si legge in inglese, catalano e castigliano in La web sense nom. Il dvd con una ventina di minuti tratti da quel concerto - Montserrat 1973 and Other Stories, del 2006 - lo si trova per poche sterline anche attraverso PlanetGong.
Ricorda Daevid Allen: "Maggie Thomas it was, with her radical politics & musical soul, who connected us with Brother Francis of the legendary monastery of Montserrat. A rock band had never played in a Spanish church before, but this was the church that had hidden fleeing Basque 'terrorists' & other political refugees from Franco's Guardia Civile. It was also remarkable for its Black Virgin, a pre-christian 'Madonna' with ancient pagan roots. Maggie had explained Gong's esoteric spirituality to the monks, so when Brother Francis requested that we play a Gong gig at Montserrat it seemed to me a perfect combination".

Battiti trasmette stasera, dalla mezzanotte, il concerto che l'anno scorso tennero a Venezia per Biennale Musica 2010 Evan Parker, Barry Guy, Paul Lovens, Walter Prati e i due Furt Richard Barrett e Paul Obermayer. "Questa formazione di musicisti - scrive Parker - permette di estendere le relazioni costruite durante il lavoro su Set for Lynn Margulis, commissionato da Musiktage Donaueschingen nel 2003 e registrato per la Psi record. La combinazione fra suoni strumentali dal vivo ed elaborazione in tempo reale attraverso il live electronics è sempre stata al centro del mio approccio all’improvvisazione fin dai tempi della Music Improvisation Company e del duo con Paul Lytton. In questo gruppo ho riunito musicisti che conoscono molto bene il lavoro l'uno dell’altro. Le mie esperienze musicali con Barry Guy e il percussionista Paul Lovens sono una pietra miliare della mia vita musicale. I rapporti più recenti con Walter Prati, Richard Barrett e Paul Obermayer durano ormai da un po’ di anni. Lavorare insieme in formazioni diverse, tra cui il mio ElectroAcustic Ensemble e Forch di Richard Barrett, fa sì che si crei una capacità di intesa immediata che sta alla base della migliore musica improvvisata".

Un breve video da poco disponibile sul rinnovato sito web di Charles Hayward anticipa l'uscita tra qualche settimana di un nuovo album per il quartetto About Group, messo in piedi dal batterista assieme a John Coxon, Pat Thomas e Alexis Taylor un paio d'anni fa. L'album si chiamerà Start and Complete, uscirà per Domino Records, e il singolo che fa da apripista è una versione del brano di Harvey Averne You’re No Good tesa a dar risposta alla rilettura che ne diede nel 1967 Terry Riley.

You’re No Good is a re-versioning of Terry Riley’s landmark 1967 track, on which the minimalist composer took Harvey Averne’s latin-tinged soul track, You’re No Good, and turned it into a free flowing piece of tape loop improvisation. Running two copies of the track alongside one another, Riley weaved between the tapes, dropping out and slowing down the song to create what may well have been the world’s first ever remix. Playing a live version of You’re No Good in the studio, About Group take the same approach as Riley but in real-time. Cutting accross the basic structure of the track to firstly deconstruct it down to its raw parts before building up to create a loose kind of pop improv. The result is an eleven minute space jam that combines Riley’s experimentation, with the street-level funkiness of the original Harvey Averne recording.”

Con cinque concerti danzerecci in Olanda e Belgio ha debuttato dal vivo il quartetto Vril (Chris Cutler, Bob Drake, Alan Jenkins e Lukas Simonis), annunciando entro breve la pubblicazione di un dvd con quindici film realizzati da altrettanti autori sulle musiche di Effigies In Cork e The Fatal Duckpond.

Vril was originally a studio project, instigated by Drake, Simonis & Cutler. After making their first album of instrumental guitar rock (inspired by 60ties surf/instrumental bands like the Shadows & the Ventures, but not with the vintage touch to it that a lot of 'surf' bands have nowadays) they asked English surrealist writer Frank Key to come up with the meaning for all that. And Frank did. He invented a story & the names of the songs. Then Vril made another album, two years later. And Frank did it again. Both albums were recorded and mixed at Bob's studio in the south of France. For the second album they were helped by the swiss musician Pierre Omer on guitar. So now there were two albums but until now no public performances whatsoever. Then - after reading the sleevenotes about the Ulm award - Lukas thought it might be a good idea to really ask people to make films to the music (not in a videoclip kinda way and not the other way round). So now we've asked 15 film-makers to come up with a film that belongs to a Vril song, the idea being that there will be a Vril dvd with films & music.

Si tiene stasera il primo concerto in memoria dello scomparso Tony Levin, nel pub di Birmingham dov'era in calendario una sua esibizione in trio con Paul Dunmall e Nick Jurd. Lo rimpiazzeranno il figlio Miles, anch'egli batterista, e Mark Sanders, altro batterista. Un più esteso omaggio da parte di amici e colleghi è in preparazione per i prossimi mesi.

The Jazz Club Session at the Rainbow on Wednesday 23rd February originally booked with Tony Levin will now feature both his son Miles Levin and Mark Sanders on drums playing with Paul Dunmall on saxophone and Nick Jurd on double bass. The Nick Jurd Quartet will start the concert with an opening short set. This concert with Tony Levin’s son, Miles, and close associates Paul Dunmall and Mark Sanders and the Nick Jurd Quartet, students from the Jazz Department at Birmingham Conservatoire, will act as a very fitting tribute to Tony Levin. The session will start at 9pm and ticket income will be donated to Blue Chairs: Shropshire Blood Trust Fund. A memorial concert for Tony where many of his friends and colleagues will play is planned for later in the year.

Instant Replay - un doppio lp uscito nel 1982, oggi assai raro - è uno dei tanti lavori di Lol Coxhill che Jean Rochard intende ripubblicare in compact disc a partire dal mese prossimo. Uno speciale sulle edizioni Nato e Chabada è andato in onda qualche sera fa per Tapage nocturne (Radio France), primo di una mini-serie dedicata a etichette e produzioni alternative in Francia: la puntata è disponibile negli archivi web della radio per un altro paio di settimane.

La statunitense Rhino ha prodotto nella propria serie Handmade una riedizione dell'album di debutto di Tim Buckley, unendo alle versioni mono e stereo dei brani originali un intero secondo cd di registrazioni inedite realizzate da Buckley tra il 1965 e il 1966 con il gruppo The Bohemians e con l'amico e co-autore Larry Beckett. Quest'ultimo ha preso parte poche sere fa a una speciale puntata di SongCircle, per l'emittente radiofonica KBOO di Portland, rievocando fatti e vicende della collaborazione artistica con Buckley e rivelando tra l'altro quali fossero i dieci brani della loro produzione che entrambi preferivano in assoluto: al primo posto, Song to the Siren (non quella di Starsailor, bensì la versione folky presentata in coda a un episodio della serie televisiva The Monkees, nel 1968). In omaggio al batterista Tony Levin, scomparso pochi giorni fa, il programma radiofonico Jazz on 3 della BBC ritrasmette in coda alla puntata di questa sera una parte del concerto - The Wise Sage - che Mujician tenne al centro The Sage di Gateshead l'8 novembre 2007. Con Levin nel 'magico' quartetto sono, com'è noto, Paul Dunmall, Paul Rogers e Keith Tippett.

Uno speciale volume, curato dal fotografo norvegese Geir Egil Bergjord, racconta per immagini la straordinaria casa dei suoni - a Parigi, in Rue de Toul - dove da quarant'anni vive e lavora il compositore Pierre Henry: lo pubblica Gilka Forlag/Fage Editions, in un'edizione limitata a cinquecento copie che include anche un cd con quattro composizioni inedite.

Pierre Henry is widely acknowledged as a pioneer of musique concrète, creating some of the genre's earliest known compositions in cooperation with Pierre Schaeffer at the Club d'Essai studio at France's national Radio and TV facilities, and creating an immense, definitive body of experimental electronic music with special emphasis on spatialisation during his illustrious lifetime. This book largely comprises photographs of his vintage equipment, unique instruments, stacks (and stacks) of tapes, artwork and his famous house/studio, together with notes and a short biography by Maurice Fleuret. His four unreleased compositions 'Capriccio', 'Phrases de quatuor', 'Miroirs du temps' and 'Envol' were all created between 2000 and 2010, including a score for choreography, a sound poem, and a tribute to Olivier Messiaen.

Ricorda Garland: "My eclectic WNYC-FM radio show Spinning On Air has been on the air since 1987, and sometime back in 1992 I broadcast some of the wonderful film music of John Barry. To my surprise I received a letter (back in those pre-email days) from John Barry's wife. It turned out that the Barrys were living on Long Island and had listened to the program. I was thrilled to invite John Barry onto Spinning On Air so we could listen to a lot of his music and talk about it in depth. The result was two hour-long shows which aired in December of 1992 and January of 1993. We cover his early fascination with film, his love for creating dramatic music, his pop group The John Barry Seven, his innovative use of orchestration and the recording process, and much more - including his story about who really composed the famous James Bond theme. John Barry was a wonderful, generous guest who had insightful, entertaining things to say about his creative work. In the world of film scoring, his music was unique and innovative, and helped shape the movie-going experiences of generations."

Foto, immagini, opere grafiche e pittoriche, documenti inediti, carteggi, scritti appunti e scarabocchi di Syd Barrett sono in una raccolta curata da Russell Beecher e Will Shutes, largamente anticipata e ormai pronta per le stampe in due lussuose versioni. L'uscita di Barrett precede di qualche settimana l'apertura a Londra dell'esposizione Syd Barrett: Art and Letters, presso l'Idea Generation Gallery dal 18 marzo al 10 aprile prossimi.

Barrett is a premium quality, large format book, produced using the finest materials. It is full of unseen and rare images of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd. It collects and catalogues for the first time artworks and photographs by Syd himself. The book has been made in conjunction with the Barrett family and access to the family art and photograph archive, and their recollections have combined to show a new picture of Syd the creative, revealing a man who was a dedicated, practising artist throughout his life.
The book splits into three sections: 1) Syd’s life in photographs – from growing up through to working and performing with Pink Floyd and his life as a solo artist. 2) Unseen and unpublished illustrated letters sent to Libby Gausden-Chisman and Jenny Spires between 1962-1965, as Syd was finding himself as a painter and a musician. 3) All of Syd’s existing work as a visual artist from 1962 until his death.

John Russell è a Bologna dall'11 al 13 febbraio per un seminario teorico-pratico di improvvisazione musicale presso la Scuola Popolare di Musica 'Ivan Illich'. Dal programma: "Il seminario è diretto agli aspetti teorici e pratici della libera improvvisazione, ed è rivolto a musicisti di ogni livello e preparazione. Saranno analizzate e messe in opera le modalità per gruppo e per strumento solista, sviluppando materiali utili alla composizione estemporanea ed elaborando strategie performative in modo efficace ed essenziale. John Russell terrà inoltre una lezione-concerto di improvvisazione per sola chitarra aperta a tutti gli associati, che potranno inoltre assistere alla performance collettiva che conclude il seminario, nella quale saranno messe in opera le tematiche affrontate."

Rattrista non poco la notizia della scomparsa pochi giorni fa del batterista Tony Levin, settantun anni appena compiuti, autentico maestro dello strumento e protagonista di molte importanti stagioni del jazz britannico. Ne ricordano il talento e l'animo gentile amici allievi e colleghi in Birmingham Jazz, All About Jazz e Facebook mentre The London Drum Jazz Café riporta un nota della moglie, Chris. Tony Levin, the internationally respected free jazz drummer, has died aged 71 on 3 February. He recently undertook a British tour to celebrate his 70th birthday with a trio featuring pianist Aki Takase and bassist John Edwards and with his old friends from the seminal quartet Muijcian, Paul Dunmall, Keith Tippett and Paul Rogers.
Born on 30 January 1940 in Much Wenlock, Shropshire Levin was a widely respected jazz drummer playing at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club in the 1960s with artists including Joe Harriott, Al Cohn, Harry "Sweets" Edison, Zoot Sims, and Toots Thielemans. His first major break came when he joined Tubby Hayes' Quartet (1965-9). He worked with numerous groups and artists, including the Alan Skidmore quintet (1969), Humphrey Lyttelton band (1969), John Taylor Trio & Sextet (1970s), Ian Carr's Nucleus (1970s), Stan Sulzmann quartet, Gordon Beck's Gyroscope, duo with John Surman (1976), European Jazz Ensemble, Third Eye (1979), Rob van den Broeck (1982), Philip Catherine's trio and quartet (1990s), Sophia Domancich Trio (with Paul Rogers, double bass; 1991-2000), Philippe Aerts trio and quartet (2000s). He also played on an ongoing basis with bass player Ali Haurand in many different groups.
From 1980, Levin worked extensively with saxophonist Paul Dunmall, including as a member of the Quartet Mujician, with Paul Rogers (double bass) and Keith Tippett (piano). In 1994, Levin released his solo album Spiritual Empathy, again with Dunmall on saxophones. In 2006 he played a trio gig with Dunmall and Rogers featuring Ellery Eskelin, Ray Anderson, Tony Malaby as guests at John Zorn's The Stone in NYC. He later recorded with Dunmall with his son Miles Levin on drums.
Levin ran his own monthly club in Birmingham, and often performed duets with Paul Dunmall and guest musicians as well as producing records for his label Rare Music. He will be sadly missed.

Quando uscì nel 1978, quattro anni dopo la sua realizzazione, il gruppo - The Residents - se n'era dimenticato, e fu per decisione altrui. Oggi Not Available torna alla luce sia in cd sia in vinile, in una versione di qualche minuto più estesa di quella pubblicata all'epoca. Precede di un paio di mesi la ristampa in vinile anche del primo album, Meet The Residents. Di entrambi si occupa la statunitense MVD / See of Sound.

Not Available was not meant to be released. It was an attempt to take N. Senada's 'Theory of Obscurity' to its logical conclusion. Senada maintained that an artist does his or her best work in isolation, free from the influence of an audience. If the artist is modifying his or her ideas to suit the tastes of the audience the work is being corrupted. This album was not to be released until the band themselves had forgotten completely about its existence, so that there would be no potential audience to influence its development. The idea worked well - the music in Not Available, a mini-opera made up of four "acts" with an epilogue, is excellent and very distinctive. The eventual publication of Not Available came about as the result of a problem with the band. In 1978, The Residents were working on Eskimo, a much-touted major release. However, after a disagreement with The Cryptic Corporation, the band disappeared to England with the Eskimo master tapes. Needing something to release, the Cryptics pulled "some old tapes" off the shelves and released them as Not Available, complete with ads in the UK music press announcing "Now It Can Be Sold." The Residents weren't bothered much by this deviation from their plan, however, since the 1978 decision by someone else to release the album couldn't affect the philosophical conditions under which it was recorded in 1974.

L'anno scorso curò la ristampa di Another Fine Tune You’ve Got Me Into, ora Esoteric Recordings provvede a rendere nuovamente disponibile anche il primo omonimo album del gruppo Gilgamesh, uscito per l'etichetta Caroline nel 1975.

Esoteric Recordings are pleased to announce a new official re-mastered release of the classic 1975 self- titled debut album by Gilgamesh. These Canterbury stylists were formed in 1972 with the core of the band built around Alan Gowen on keyboards and Mike Travis on drums. At various times the line-up included former Caravan and Hatfield & the North member Richard Sinclair, Mont Campbell (formerly of Egg) and Neil Murray. The group’s debut album was recorded for Virgin’s Caroline label in 1975 and featured a line-up of Alan Gowen (keyboards), Phil Lee (guitar), Jeff Clyne (bass) and Mike Travis (drums), with guest Amanda Parsons (vocals). Unavailable on cd for over ten years, Gilgamesh is a classic of the Canterbury style and is sure to be a much sought after release by all aficionados of the genre.
