Nel numero di aprile 2008 della rivista The Wire Philip Clark introduce alle 'storie maravigliose' di Henry Cow a trent'anni dal loro ultimo concerto (fu in Piazza del Duomo a Milano, il 25 luglio 1978). Per un racconto in prima persona di uno dei protagonisti, il sito di Chris Cutler offre quello appena di poco successivo allo scioglimento del gruppo, con un'aggiornata premessa e alcune precisazioni.

Inizia domani una nuova, rara serie di concerti in Europa del gruppo statunitense Thinking Plague, guidato dal chitarrista Mike Johnson, incentrata sulla sua partecipazione al festival Gouveia Art Rock 2008, ai primi di aprile, in Portogallo. Oltre a date in Francia, Germania e Svizzera è stata finalmente confermata anche un'apparizione a Milano, il 3 aprile presso il Legend 54 Club. Il gruppo, in attività da quasi venticinque anni e titolare di splendidi album rintracciabili su ReR e Cuneiform, si presenta in formazione parzialmente diversa da quella vista nel 2000, quando suonò in Italia per la prima volta in tre concerti coordinati dal Circ.a.

Thinking Plague's avantgarde music, basically all of which written by guitarist Mike Johnson, is often labeled as Rock-in-Opposition. Based in Denver, USA, the band writes powerful music that is highly structured and rich in rhythmic complexity and its range of sound. This complex and challenging music is played by the band's highly experienced performers, all of whom have partaken in a number of musically related projects, such as 5UUs, Hamster Theater, Toupidek Limonade, Present, U-totem, Ahvak, Blast, Science Group etc, as well as in jazz and classical music projects, as in the case of the band's pianist Stevan Tickmayer.

Esce in questi giorni la ristampa di A Flat Man, l'album più recente di Ivor Cutler al momento della sua scomparsa, avvenuta nel marzo 2006. Lo pubblica l'etichetta Hoorgi House Records, istituita lo scorso anno dal figlio di Cutler, Jeremy, per curare la raccolta, la diffusione e la reperibilità dei materiali prodotti in vita e lasciati dall'impareggiabile scrittore e musicista di Glasgow. Dalle note di copertina:
"A Flat Man stands out musically in that it has more improvisation than other recordings. Ivor could regard improvisation as an indulgence except where it was genuinely inspired. Thankfully, he was not as strict with himself on A Flat Man as he was on previous records. It is a delight when he allows himself to wander - the wilfully naïve track 'Your Smell' has some exquisite organ playing; a pity the piece is so short. It's profound melancholy compelled me to include it in my choice of music for the Memorial event organised for Ivor in July 2006. The tracks 'Fish', and 'British Museum' have more of this sombre delicate extemporization."

E' uscita MBW, nuova produzione editoriale - la quinta - frutto della collaborazione tra Robert Wyatt e il pittore e fotografo Jean-Michel Marchetti, stavolta a nome di Alfreda Benge e dedicata ai testi da lei scritti per gli album di Wyatt Dondestan, Shleep e Cuckooland. Si tratta del primo lavoro prodotto dalla casa francese Éditions Æncrages, specializzata in squisite pubblicazioni artigianali a tiratura limitatissima, dopo il disastroso incendio che a maggio dello scorso anno ne ha distrutto magazzino e attrezzature. John Kelman recensisce su All About Jazz alcuni album dei primi anni settanta della tedesca MPS, divenuti nel tempo autentiche rarità nell'originale formato in vinile e oggi riprodotti su cd dall'etichetta Promising Music. Tra i primi titoli ripubblicati spicca Sugar Cane's Got the Blues, (oltre al leader Don "Sugar Cane" Harris, scomparso nel 1999, erano Volker Kreigel, Terje Rypdal, Wolfgang Dauner, Neville Whitehead e Robert Wyatt), con estratti dalle esibizioni al festival Berliner Jazztage del novembre 1971.

Brainville is a Canterbury scene supergroup based around Hugh Hopper (bass) and Daevid Allen (guitar) — both formerly in Soft Machine. The band started as a quartet with Pip Pyle (drums) and Mark Kramer (keyboards, producer), touring the US and UK in 1998. They released a 1999 album called The Children's Crusade. Reduced to a trio, Brainville: Live in the UK, released as by "Daevid Allen with Hugh Hopper and Pip Pyle", came out in 2004. The band is now operating as Brainville 3, with Allen, Hopper and Chris Cutler.

Le pubblicazioni Tellus su rivista e audiocassetta - importante veicolo per le musiche e le arti d'avanguardia newyorkesi fino ai primi anni novanta - sono fuori circolazione da molto tempo, oggetto quasi soltanto da collezionisti; molti materiali audio sono stati via via recuperati nell'archivio UbuWeb, ma storia e catalogazione si consultano più organicamente nell'ottimo blog Continuo. Harvestworks, che ha preso origine dallo stesso team che ha prodotto Tellus, è tuttora in attività con programmi a sostegno di numerose iniziative artistiche.

Japan Society celebra i trent'anni di attività musicale a New York di Ikue Mori con due giorni di concerti il 21 e 22 marzo prossimi. David Garland l'ha intervistata per il suo programma radiofonico Spinning on Air domenica scorsa. Auguri Ikue!
Drummer/composer/laptop wizard Ikue Mori moved to New York in 1977 and has since launched a multi-faceted career as a musician. After forming seminal no-wave band DNA with Arto Lindsay, Mori used drum machines to create her own highly sensitive signature style of improvisation and experimental music; she received the Distinctive Award for Prix Ars Electronica Digital Music in 1999.
Mori's activities in the realm of music and media are wide-ranging and diverse, including performing in several bands and collaborating with international artists. She displays her versatile and virtuosic range over two evenings at Japan Society.
March 21: Mori takes the stage with Bhima Swarga comprised of Mori, Matt Welch and Gamelan Dharma Swara gamelan ensemble and accompanied by video animation also by Mori, followed by a world premiere collaboration between Mori and extreme vocal artist Makigami Koichi.
March 22: Mori's acclaimed solo over silent films by Maya Deren, as presented at London's Tate Modern, makes its U.S. debut. Next, Mori performs with two of her main collaborations: Phantom Orchard with harpist Zeena Parkins and guest percussionist Cyro Baptista; and the electro-acoustic trio Mephista with Sylvie Courvoisier (piano) and Susie Ibarra (percussion).

Il concerto del prossimo 29 marzo a Mestre di Phil Miller vedrà la partecipazione, oltre che del bassista e chitarrista Fred Baker, come annunciato, anche del sassofonista Simon Picard.
Phil Miller is one of England's most original jazz composers. His distinctive, intricate compositions are more usually heard using the voices of his 5 or 6 piece band In Cahoots. The repertoire for the duo has been adapted and arranged to take advantage of the virtuoso playing of Fred Baker, one of Europe's leading exponents of the bass and an outstanding guitarist. A variety of guitars and styles are employed during the act and the music ranges from the simplicity of the acoustic guitar to the many possibilities that state-of-the-art sound processing and synthesis have made available to the modern-day guitarist.

Soft Machine dal vivo a Parigi il 2 marzo 1970, nella formazione a cinque con Wyatt, Ratledge, Hopper, Dean e Dobson: le riprese del concerto sono ora un dvd per Voiceprint, con il titolo Alive in Paris 1970. Per dirla con Mike King, che ha contribuito a restaurare le tracce audio originali: "Be forewarned - there is a tremendous wealth to feast our eyes and ears into. All you have to do is get a bottle of red and turn it up! A true, and overdue, gift from Voiceprint!"
At long last the Soft Machine DVD featuring a live performance captured by French Television in 1970 is now available to purchase. The concert was filmed in March 1970 at the Theatre de la Musique in Paris France and features the lineup of Robert Wyatt - drums, vocals Hugh Hopper - bass Mike Ratledge - Lowrey organ & Hohner pianet Elton Dean - alto sax & saxello Lyn Dobson - soprano sax, flute, voice & harmonica. The set list is certainly one to get long time admirers of this most unique of British bands who are the acknowledged leaders of the 'Canterbury Sound'. This release really is one for the fans of Soft Machine who are universally considered to be the premier group of the Canterbury Scene. Available for the first time ever on DVD - never released on before even on VHS.

Da qualche giorno è pubblicato ufficialmente da ZigZag/Harmonia Mundi l'album Greaves Verlaine, frutto del fine lavoro compositivo di John Greaves condotto negli ultimi due anni sulle poesie di Paul Verlaine. Alla realizzazione dell'album partecipano tra gli altri Jeanne Added, Scott Taylor, Karen Mantler e Dominique Pifarély, oltre ai fedelissimi di Roxongs Jef Morin e Mathieu Rabaté.
Così lo presenta Pascal Bussy:
"Dans son parcours unique de bassiste, de chanteur, mais aussi de pianiste et d’auteur-compositeur, ce nouveau disque à la pochette rouge sang constitue un jalon fondamental. À travers lui, John Greaves annexe à sa palette déjà riche la couleur de la poésie. À juste titre, il décrit Verlaine comme une suite de chansons contemporaines, chansons qu'il situe sans hésiter dans le «zeitgeist» qui flotte autour de nous, cet air du temps qui sait parfois nous souffler une inspiration insolite. L’enregistrement a eu lieu un an plus tard, en compagnie de plusieurs complices musiciens : Jef Morin à la guitare et à la basse, Matthieu Rabaté à la batterie et aux percussions, Laurent Valéro à l’alto, à la flûte et au bandonéon, Scott Taylor à la trompette, au tuba et à l’accordéon. Dans le rôle des enlumineurs, il faut citer Jeanne Added qui chante sur quatre titres, Fat Lovsky qui jongle avec l’ukulélé, la scie et le thérémine, et Karen Mantler à l’harmonica. Quant à Greaves, il a peaufiné sa voix de… non-chanteur, et il n’a joué de la basse que sur un seul morceau, se consacrant au piano, au Fender Rhodes, et bien sûr aux arrangements. Le résultat, bougrement cohérent, se compose de onze pièces qui sont chacune une miniature. Avec son timbre de baryton, John Greaves nous fait pénétrer dans un monde où les héros sont le rêve, la suggestion, l’érotisme, les vapeurs d’absinthe, et... les vers de Verlaine. Au cœur d’une production où les bases instrumentales sont le socle d’une liberté absolue, son interprétation, à la fois surréaliste et esthétique, invente en quelque sorte un nouveau style, celui du «lied pop contemporain»... Musicien de son temps, chanteur singulier et attachant, John Greaves porte en lui les plus belles utopies. Mélodiste raffiné et habile négociateur de prises de risques musicales, il brise les étiquettes et nous rend l’avant-garde abordable. Délicieusement anachronique, son Verlaine est un disque hors du temps, et par conséquent fondamental."

Il celebre quartetto sassofonistico Rova festeggia trent'anni di attività concertistica - il debutto dal vivo avvenne il 4 febbraio 1978 presso il Mills College, ad Oakland - con un nuovo tour europeo che in Italia toccherà Forlì, Roma e Padova dall'8 al 10 marzo prossimi e che per alcune date in Francia e Paesi Bassi avrà il rinforzo di due batteristi d'eccezione, Michael Vatcher e Tony Buck.
