Riprendendo ed estendendo l'esperienza K-Space, Tim Hodgkinson e Ken Hyder hanno recentemente stretto alleanza con Robert ("Lu") Edmonds fondando con lui il trio Raz3, rinnovando l'attenzione alle pratiche dell'improvvisazione libera e insieme ispirandosi a musiche di disparate culture e provenienze (soprattutto asiatiche). Edmonds ha fatto parte in passato di Damned, Shriekback, 3 Mustaphas 3 e Mekons (con quest'ultimi fa tuttora concerti), ha suonato tra gli altri con Public Image Ltd., Billy Bragg e Lol Coxhill, suona diversi strumenti a corda e a fiato ed è anche costruttore di numerosi 'oggetti sonori'.

Davvero un grandissimo onore per Dylan Howe - figlio del chitarrista Steve Howe - avere ospite Robert Wyatt in occasione del concerto tenuto dal suo quintetto a Lincoln, nel Lincolnshire, lo scorso 22 settembre. Wyatt si è unito al gruppo per cantare Round Midnight, di Thelonious Monk. Come si sa, Wyatt non saliva su un palcoscenico per cantare da molti molti anni. Così spiega il fatto lui stesso: "It's the first time I'd sung live in 25 years! I just felt it. If I don't have time to think about it, then I can just sneak up on myself and do it, I suppose! It was great fun, I was even thinking of sitting in on the last number too." Un evento a sorpresa, destinato a suo modo a rimanere nella storia, e di cui non c'era ovviamente traccia nelle pubblicità del concerto (ad esempio in http://tinyurl.com/ytvld2).

Cinque titoli - si può dire tutti imperdibili - sono disponibili ora (Pam & Gary Windo, Kevin Ayers and the Whole World nella formazione in quartetto con Wyatt nel 1970 ad Hyde Park, G.F. Fitz-Gerald & Lol Coxhill, Ken Hyder's Talisker e Ray Russell), e altri tre di altrettanto rilievo (Mike Osborne Quartet, Soft Heap, Steve Miller Trio con ospite Elton Dean) sono già annunciati per il 2008.

Oggi è morto Mike Osborne, all'età di sessantasei anni, e a poca distanza da quella di Paul Rutherford la sua scomparsa segna un'altra grave perdita per il jazz europeo, nonostante da tempo il sassofonista non fosse più in attività. Dà il triste annuncio Hazel Miller, responsabile e fondatrice con il marito Harry dell'etichetta Ogun: "With sadness in our hearts, we have to tell you that Mike died this morning after a long battle with cancer. Although he has not been around for many years his original and exciting music is still as relevant today, influencing many generations. Adieu to another dear friend!"

Osborne ha lasciato il proprio indelebile segno in alcune delle stagioni più belle del jazz britannico, nel corso degli anni sessanta e fino a metà anni settanta, lavorando a lungo con Mike Westbrook e con Chris McGregor, con Stan Tracey, Michael Gibbs e John Surman, con Harry Miller e Mike Cooper tra gli altri.

Il numero di ottobre della rivista inglese The Wire dedica la copertina a Robert Wyatt, con articolo e brani di intervista - a lui e alla compagna Alfreda Benge - firmati da David Toop. Il titolo del pezzo - Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, riflessivo ed emozionante - riprende un passaggio in cui Wyatt cita gli elementi per lui essenziali nella natura e nell'evoluzione della musica, in stretto rapporto alle attività umane: "I think Charles Mingus said that if music loses its roots in song and dance it loses all importance or value. I certainly feel that. If music hasn't got song and dance in it, even with a search, it's decorative, but it's deeply trivial. I'm a Darwinist. Song and dance, they're so biologically wired in to what humans do. People have been dancing on a Saturday night for a long time. But there is a Sunday morning, when you have to listen to church music. That's why they invented Saturday and Sunday".

Nel programma di Stuart Maconie Freak Zone di domenica scorsa, su BBC 6 Music, sono andate in onda due belle interviste a Neil Innes (soprattutto a proposito di una montante, si dice, Rutlesmania) e a Kevin Ayers in occasione del suo nuovo album, The Unfairground. Inoltre, nella sezione University Of The Strange, si sono sentiti alcuni dei 27 brani della deliziosa raccolta Songs the Bonzo Dog Band Taught Us uscita qualche mese fa, assieme alle nuove edizioni cd degli album del gruppo, allo scopo di documentare le origini di canzoni poi divenute amatissime nelle versioni date dai Nostri.

Phil Miller e Hugh Hopper si sono incontrati lo scorso 29 agosto ad Amsterdam per registrare una serie di brani in duo, per lo più improvvisazioni (ma anche versioni di Miniluv e Calyx); alcuni sono stati poi trasmessi l'8 settembre all'interno del programma De Wissel, per l'olandese Radio 6, assieme a un'estesa intervista e a numerosi estratti dalla discografia, ufficiale e non, di Wilde Flowers, Soft Machine, Matching Mole, Hatfield and the North, In Cahoots e Caveman Hughscore. Radio3 Suite trasmette domenica 16 settembre, con inizio alle ore 20.30, il concerto che l'ensemble Zeitkratzer ha dato all'Aula Magna dell'Università La Sapienza di Roma lo scorso 16 gennaio. In programma c'è anche la quarta parte di Metal Machine Music, trascritta da Luca Venitucci e Reinhold Friedl, omessa nella versione del cd/dvd pubblicato in questi giorni da Asphodel. Curioso notare che delle quattro esecuzioni - integrali o parziali - che a tutt'oggi l'ensemble ha dato del famigerato brano di Lou Reed, tre si sono tenute in Italia; la quarta, a Berlino nel 2002, è quella scelta per il cd.

A Lodi dal 14 al 28 settembre 2007 si tiene l'undicesima edizione della rassegna ContemporaneaMente, fortemente dedicata all'improvvisazione e alla ricerca nella musica e nella danza. Pronto il debutto discografico per The Village Band, sestetto di musicisti del Devon istruito e guidato da Mike Westbrook. L'album si intitola Waxeywork Show e ripropone il felice schema dei numerosi concerti tenuti dal pimpante ensemble fiatistico negli ultimi due anni, alcuni in contesti ufficiali - come il London Jazz Festival dello scorso anno - e altri assai meno: a una parte originale - quella che intitola il lavoro, scritta da Mike e Kate Westbrook - segue in serrata sequenza, dal titolo All THAT Jazz, la rilettura di super-classici di Jelly Roll Morton, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Bessie Smith e Tadd Dameron tra gli altri.

Internationally acclaimed composer/performers Mike and Kate Westbrook, based in the West Country, are joined by four leading Devonian musicians to form the Village Band.
‘THE WAXEYWORK SHOW’ is a new original piece for voice and acoustic brass by Mike Westbrook specially created for the group, featuring lyrics and vocals by Kate Westbrook. In ‘all THAT jazz’, the Band performs Mike Westbrook’s arrangements of Classic Jazz Instrumentals, Songs, Blues and Rags. The programme includes Scott Joplin, Duke Ellington, Jelly Roll Morton, Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Bessie Smith and many more.
The Village Band made its debut in early 2006 and appeared in a number of West Country Festivals, arts centres and jazz clubs. The band was featured at the London Jazz Festival with several performances including a 'live' broadcast of THE WAXEYWORK SHOW from the Pizza Express Jazz Club on BBC's Jazz on 3.

Il giorno 8 ottobre, data ufficiale dell'uscita dell'atteso nuovo lavoro, Wyatt firmerà copie dell'album - disponibile anche in doppio vinile - in un negozio musicale presso casa, a Louth:

Robert Wyatt will be signing copies of his new album 'Comicopera' at Off the Beaten Tracks in Aswell Street, Louth on Monday, October 8. The eagerly anticipated album is released world-wide, also on Monday and Robert, who lives in Louth, kindly agreed to visit the shop during a break from promoting the album.
As well as meeting Robert, fans of the rock legend will be able to get their hands on a special edition vinyl version of the album at the signing. The LP is a double heavyweight gatefold deluxe with one act a side, and an exclusive poem by Robert Wyatt etched on Side D. There will also be assorted Robert Wyatt goodies at the signing and all the album's artwork has been designed by Robert's wife Alfie Benge.
